Hawkee, I was wondering what happened to being able to click usernames and viewing their profile in the forum?

I can click on profiles that have commented snippets and profiles that have started threads, but when I actually go onto the thread and read it I am unable to click on their profile?

Cheiron, yes I'm sorry about that! I've been investigating the issue and have employed some measures to make sure if it happens again the server will automatically reboot. That way we can avoid any prolonged outages. Then hopefully we can get to the bottom of the crashes to ensure they don't happen at all anymore.

just would like to say thank you for getting the site back up Hawkee. all i was getting yesterday was a blank white screen with phpBB critical error messages

ran a whole battery of tests using Sam Spade to confirm it wasnt just me and got a load of friends across the globe to try and they all got the same reply as me. the phpBB error with different lines on refreshes.

There's no malicious intent, it doesn't harm your computer or anything, just i'd rather not bend the rules. the script itself isn't a hack, but what it overall does, is considered a crack of the program.

well, i would say it would as

a) its promoting hacking. For, If you post it as educational, what is stopping others from learning from your script, and creating another script, passing it on, then hacking the said user's mIRC/Computer
b) What makes your script different from the other hack scripts?

anyways, send it to me, i want to take a look at it :P

Cheiron, you can use the forum search page here to search by username:

If you check the radio at the bottom to display results as posts you'll get fairly accurate results.

as a thought or would it be too complex .. on the forum could it be done so you can search by either user name or your name for past/present posts to save having to trawl through a hundred plus pages ?

Cheiron, Thanks for catching that. Somebody actually misplaced a snippet in the Wordpress section and I moved it leaving the section empty. It shouldn't have appeared in the menu after that. I fixed the error message and made sure no empty platforms show up in the menu.

i mean - if i upload a 2000px width picure, it would be compressed to 500px or whatever it is .. i think - unless the server just produces a smaller image for a page? i dont know!

Anyways - one of thos cool ajax zoom features would be awesome :D

Can you make the image uploader not compress the image size - but the webpage compress it on load.

If i need to zoom in on an image for more detailing i can't really see some on here they're too small for large screenshots. if they were un compressed viewing the raw image *normally* i can zoom in on it :/

It'll always load the Facebook API regardless of whether you use it or not because of the way the technology works, but it shouldn't be hanging like this. I'm going to see if Facebook has any answers.

I've been researching this problem and haven't been able to come up with much. Are you using any sort of Ad-blocking software? I found something that mentioned whitelisting the domain, but I'm not sure if that's related to this issue.

Its a possibility, that Privoxy may be blocking it, I dont believe it does tho, it should instantly stop the connection, not hold onto it, if it is indeed blocked. Also, if this helps, I do not use the facebook addon.

Also it seems to have stopped for now, but it was happening a lot a day ago, and earlier this morning.

Ok, it just happened again. Heres what Firefox said was going on:

"Transferring data from static.ak.connect.facebook.com..."

So its not being blocked, or data wouldnt be being transfered.

I've updated the snippet rules to be a little more clear about using other people's code. Hopefully everybody can agree that these rules are fair and respectable:

- Snippet needs to be tested and functional.
- Introduction must describe what the snippet does and how it is used.
- At least 25% of the code must be written by you.
- If you modified somebody else's snippet you must include a URL to the original.
- You may not post an updated snippet separately, you need to edit your first post.

I like the new friends thing. except 2 things, (sorry to moan) there is no logic in having last activity if the order is not by latest to last. secondly "a snippet" doesn't really say much, maybe "script xxx v1.0 by jonesy44" etc.

Looks good, reduces clutter most-definitely, in my opinion, anyway :)

What about grouping the categories for the day? ie: comments group with comments, likes group with likes, etc. So, that way, you have 1 image, and then within it you've got a list of all the comments/posts within that category?

jonesy44, The Comments section and the Latest Discussions will still show every comment as they always have. The new homepage will focus more on what's getting the most attention. I'm thinking more along the lines of Digg, Friendfeed and Facebook.

Zmodem, I think it's important to focus on items that have the attention of multiple users. I'm making an adjustment now so no single user can comment on something and bring it to the front page. Otherwise it just lends itself to clutter and abuse.

How about instead of focusing on user comments on content, we focus on content being commented by users? That way, it eliminates most confusion, as well as you can add the bulk of users commenting on 1 single product/snippet/etc, rather than showing users who've commented on products.

What sort of updates are you most interested in, just the new posts? One thing I'm considering is excluding the comments made by a single person. I may only show new comments if 2-3 people have participated in the discussion on that day.

I've implemented the new homepage. It no longer shows the recently liked images and snippets as these weren't updating quickly enough. It now focuses on all of the activities on the site including new snippets, reviews, comments and likes. I've also removed the "Posts" option from the header as the homepage now acts as the latest posts section. Let me know what you think.

We've got Facebook Connect support! Now you can tie your Facebook account to your Hawkee account by clicking the "Connect with Facebook" button above. Just be sure to login to your Hawkee account *first* otherwise you'll accidentally tie your Facebook to a new Hawkee account.

By connecting your account you will be able to import your About Me section from Facebook as well as your profile picture, location and Interests. In the future we'll allow you to find your Facebook friends who are also here on Hawkee. You'll also be able to share your Hawkee comments and posts to your Facebook activity feed.

We're also doing a soft beta release of our new Systems section. You can build a computer or app system using components on the site or from elsewhere.

This will allow you to find your Facebook friends who are also on Hawkee. It will also allow Facebook users to begin posting to Hawkee immediately without registering for a Hawkee account via email. This score is determined by a variety of variables such as score, # of reviews, # of comments, age of product, # of clicks, # of stores, etc. It'll hopefully help offer a better sort so you can find the best apps and products right away.

Just a hint Cheiron: most people do their best to check as many scripts as possible, but a title such as "some flood protection" doesn't really get my juices flowing -.- not that any other sciript does, but yahno.. you get my metaphor ay?

Try a more interesting title and i'm sure it'll gain more attention!

no-one has bothered to comment on it yet that is why F*U*R*B*Y it has been there for a few days and the only ones active is myself and PunkTuReD as we work through it. my point is, that it is a unique code that deserved some proper attention away from all the annoying comments that come from far too many users on the site these days. Hawkee , Lindrian and Mountaindew are probably the most experienced and decent coders/people on this site that i have come to know with the exception of RusselB :) so far. and i felt it worthy of their eye

just out of interest.. i have a snippet i would like to point out for special interest in its uniqueness from a friend of mine on this site , PunkTuReD, Hawkee and feel that it is worthy of a special review please.
i have been working on getting a protection script set for mirc but based on an IRCd's protection module. the script is still on a beta version but it is a good working version and is simply like nothing i have ever seen. could i trouble you for some of your time to have a look at it and comment / review please Hawkee.. the code is on page http://www.hawkee.com/snippet/5649/

Hey, quick suggestion on the configuration for building customer 'systems': how about an option to choose which product/product-image can be used as the default for the system when it's listed in the systems' list? That would be nice. That way, for instance, instead of my audio system showing a surge-protector as the product advertisement, I'd rather select the Z5500 sound system. Just a thought :)

Awesome! It works now. I'm sorry to keep on providing new issues, but I figure that it would only help to make things look better, here's another: When I see the product list under just /systems/, the descriptions, if they carry them, contain there carriage-returns (ie: returns/line breaks). However, if I click on the product, any configuration with line breaks is just one continuous paragraph. For instance, view the office blizzard description first at the /systems/ page, notice the line breaks on the description, then click on the the system and view the next page, where the line breaks are removed.

Still not working for me. I've selected a name for the system, then chose 'Computers' from the drop-down list and also wrote up a short description. Then, on the next page, I typed in a few different things to search for, ie: intel core 2 duo cpu, midtower atx, crucial memory module, etc; however, when I click to add anything to the list, nothing is added to the list. Strange :)

Furby, This should work pretty well as a way to combine PHP snippets. I haven't added snippet support quite yet though.

We've got a new feature we're beta testing. I'd love for some beta testers to give it a run. The feature will allow you to build a computer system, post your iphone system, build a software system, etc. The idea is to create a list of items that work together. I've compiled a list of my favorite iPod Touch games here:

http://www.hawkee.com/systems/1/

To build a system you can use the system building tool here:

http://www.hawkee.com/systems/post

Please give it a go and let me know if you have any issues. You can post a component from anywhere online or you can simply search Hawkee for components to add.

I cleaned up the app listing a bit today. I'm showing the date added, genre and a bit of the description plus I changed the free apps to "Get It Now" instead of "Buy It Now". The Newest app sort is now being updated constantly throughout the day so you'll be able to see new apps the instant they're added to the app store.

The Script system is going to change completely in the coming months. We'll have much more prominent links, a script search, multiple script reviews, recently liked scripts and all the platforms. The new link to post a script will be in your profile bar probably beside "snippets" or "images".

Thanks guys, I fixed the snippet updates. It wasn't taking into account the exact time of the update so it wasn't sorted properly. The Recently Liked Snippets update when enough people like a snippet. Just 1 "like it" won't trigger it as to avoid a single individual from controlling what shows up on the front page.

foreach ($array as $number) { $numb = $numb + $number; $a++; }
echo "Scores: ".$scores."<br>Total: ".$numb."<br>Amount: ".$a."<br>";
echo "Average: ".number_format($numb/$a,0);

and now heres the function

Code:

function average($numbers) {

hey man, was wondering if you could help me with a problem

in my db i have a table called, scores, it has 3 fields, them being, 'snippet_id','scores','voters'

then, when people visit the snippet, it gets the data based on snippet_id, and in scores, i have '1 6 7 10 5 3 2 4'

how can i add them all up, and then divide it, thus fore getting the average

You know your PHP email script?

I have a problem...

Why is it that none of my browsers will show the page?

I use RapidWeaver, i have pasted it into the html code.

But Firefox prompts me to download the PHP file, safari just displays the code as text.

Am i doing something wrong? =(

Please help!

-Rory

Thanks for your comments on my Social network ramblings. I like to keep in touch with lots of people I know but they're all on different networks. I want to be able to connect to them all.

Thank you, but most of the changes have taken place on the Price Comparison. Most notably you can now view comments within any tag or category.
