After flying 4" quads for a long time, I wanted to take a step further and build a large 8" quad. Since I increasingly visit the Alps, I need a quad that can cover more ground. My 4" drone goes far, but it takes a lot of time and is quite susceptible to wind.
In Nick's 8" design from eyeflydesigns.com, I saw a good basis for achieving long flight times. 10" was also a possibility, but 10" costs more and only shows its full potential with more payload. My idea was to forgo an action camera.
I'm very impressed with the image quality of the Avata 2 and therefore want to skip the GoPro. Once the DJI O4 Air Unit is on the market, it will be the main camera for cinematic shots. Moreover, I mainly fly for myself. I'd rather leave the 200 grams and 400 euros at home. Until then, the O3 will serve as a placeholder. This gives me room for slightly lighter motors and larger batteries. I assume the O4 AU will have similar dimensions to the O3.
The frame weighs 121 grams (154 with TPU). The complete quad weighs 450 grams, about 250 grams less than known 7" drones.
I fly self-built 21700 6s1p (Molicel P42A 4200mAh) and 6s2p (Samsung 50s 10,000mAh) Li-Ion packs.
The power consumption is incredibly low. 8-9A when hovering, 14A when cruising at 75 km/h, slightly higher with 6s2p.!

AirbladeUAV has done it again and this time they've brought long range to the 5" class! Based on the popular Transformer Mini, the new Transformer 5" Ultralight adopts a lot of the same design philosophies with larger props and more payload capacity. It can fly upwards of 20 minutes on a 4 cell Li-Ion battery pack and in ideal conditions it's got a range of over 4 to 5 miles. In this guide I'll walk..
Read moreWith the release of the DJI FPV Drone cinematic FPV has become a lot more accessible, but you certainly don't want to crash a $750 drone! The QAV-CINE Freybott is a compact, lightweight cinematic FPV drone that can take a hit and keep going. It's a lot safer to fly indoors and around people. With a naked GoPro or the SMO 4k you can capture some great stabilized footage. In this guide I'll show you..
