https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:4761754TBS just release another iteration of the Source One frame and I want to try this version because of the huge weight reduction. The previous version (V3) weighed 140.5g and new frame (V4) is 41g lighter, with a weight of 99.5g. But for my build, I will further reduce the weight with shorter standoffs and Titanium screws. All but 4 screws were swiched to Ti. The only screws I did not switch were the ones that held down the arms because it is stronger than Titanuim. With those modifications, I was able to get the frame down to 88.8g.

My only concern about this frame are the 4mm arms, but only time will tell if they are strong enough for a 5” freestyle quad. Overall, this quad was very easy to build because there is a lot of space to worth with on this frame. I also did not like hard edges on the carbon fiber, so I soften them up by runing a file over it.

I had a bit of an issue with the 4in1 ESC. It never occured to me until today that not all ESC's have the positive and negative on the same side. For example, The T Motors F55 ESC has the positive on the right and the negative on the left. But the iFlight ESC that I am using is the opposite. The XT60 antenna mount that I 3D printed had the positive and negative on the opposite sides. I was just being picky, and did not want my wires to cross, so I remixed the XT60 mount. I was not able to do a simple mirror to the 3D file because that would put the antenna on the wrong side, and it would not reach. Instead, I had the flip the way the plug fit in the mount.

So far, I like the Gemfan 51477 props because I get a lot less propwash in comparison to the Gemfan 51499. I was planning to take a quick trip to the mountains and wanted something with a little more thrust to compensate the thinner air. But down at sea level elevation, I am getting a bit more props wash than I like with the GF 51499. I have not flown much in higher elevations so I am not sure what would be a good prop to use.

UPDATE - Feb 09, 2021 - 6mm Arms!!!!

As I suspected, the 4mm arms is not strong enough. I technically did not break the arm, nor did it fail. Maybe it was just a defective arm that was delaminating? Regardless the issue may be, I just replaced all the old 4mm arms with 6mm ones. Why 6mm and not 5mm or 5.5mm? The simple answer is the screw size. I will simply swap out the existing 8mm screws with 10mm for the arms and bottom plate. Then use 8mm motors screws and 30mm screws for the flight stack. If I would us a different size arms like 5mm, I would need to cut the screws or find m3 screws that are 7mm, 9mm, and 29mm long. Odd ball size like that is a bit more difficult to find. Plus, I already had the other size screws in hand.

The weight difference for each arm is about 5 grams. You need to also need to factor in the weight of the longer screws too. And if you have TPU printed arm guard, do not forget it will be thicker too. After switching to 6mm thick arms I only gained 21g, so I am happy with the results.

Hi, what brand and color name of filament is that? Looks very nice

wrong17   Apr 25, 2022

I bought this filament on amazon, it is made by Yoyi and the color is violet.

All is TPU? Or would you recommend PLA for the Gopro and Antenna housing?

wrong17   Aug 01, 2023

Yes, it is all in printed with TPU.If you print the antenna housing in PLA, I think it will break in your first crash.

hey! i was hoping you could advise the size of standoffs you used? I'm guessing 20mm? looks beautiful!

wrong17   Apr 09, 2021

thanks! I used 20mm standoff for this build.

Rathernew   Apr 18, 2021

Awesome, i'm thinking about using some of your ideas, any chance you have the print link for the caddx nebula mount? Thanks for getting back to me!

wrong17   Apr 18, 2021

I am not too sure what mount you are looking for? The mount for the Nebula Pro camera mount in the front? I am pretty sure that all the 3D printed parts you need can be found in kit I created in thingiverse: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:4740371

Let me know if you do not see what you need in that link I just gave you.

Very nice!
Love the thought and attention to detail.
I'm going to be building mine up in a few weeks, once all parts arrive.
So far, I've only been able to chamfer the frame and print a few accessories (actually printed the same arm end protectors).
The antenna/XT60 mount is awesome! I didn't see that last time I searched Thingiverse. Any issues with the antenna popping out that side slot in a crash?
I just finished remixing a GoPro Hero 5 mount to fit this frame, but your's looks a litter beefier.
Could you link to the .STL for yours?
How have you found the durability so far with the 4mm arms?

Here are the 6mm arms that was custom cut from CNC Madness

jeffcd   Feb 09, 2021

Nice! Very strange how the arm delaminated like that. You skipped right over 5mm and went for the 6! They look real beefy!
I just ordered a couple spare TBS Source Micro bottom plates & a top plate for my sons quad from CNC Madness. I have a couple of spare 4mm arms for the Source One v4, so hopefully I'm good for a while, but if they start causing me problems I think I'll be following your lead. Thanks for the update!

wrong17   Feb 09, 2021

I went with the 6mm arms because it was easier to match the screws that I already have.

Very clean build and prints!!! :) Love the Cap cover also.
Can't wait to use this frme on my coming builds!
Where did you get the arm end protectors?

wrong17   Jan 25, 2021

Thanks! I got the arm end protectors here: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:4720949
I look forward to seeing your build!

AirbladeUAV has done it again and this time they've brought long range to the 5" class! Based on the popular Transformer Mini, the new Transformer 5" Ultralight adopts a lot of the same design philosophies with larger props and more payload capacity. It can fly upwards of 20 minutes on a 4 cell Li-Ion battery pack and in ideal conditions it's got a range of over 4 to 5 miles. In this guide I'll walk..

With the release of the DJI FPV Drone cinematic FPV has become a lot more accessible, but you certainly don't want to crash a $750 drone! The QAV-CINE Freybott is a compact, lightweight cinematic FPV drone that can take a hit and keep going. It's a lot safer to fly indoors and around people. With a naked GoPro or the SMO 4k you can capture some great stabilized footage. In this guide I'll show you..
