of my pro photographer friends are really crazy about Leica lens. Then I went through the reviews (that is very important) and finally I decided to take the risk (coz at that time also I was not sure about its performance).

Now after using it regularly, I thought taking the risk was worth and the camera is worth the price. I am listing few features those impressed me most.

1.The iA mode is superb, u can't make a mistake even if u wan't to.

2.18x zoom is great. Even at full zoom, there is no distortion and focus remains accurate.

3.It has a true manual mode. Unlike other cameras, here u can adjust all the settings in full throttle like ISO, Shutter speed, F-Stop.

4.Unlike many other cameras, it has live Histogram function. U don't need to be a pro to understand it correctly. Just follow the rule (In general, the more pixels that are toward the right of the histogram, the righter (or lighter) the photo will be. The corollary is that the more pixels there are toward the left of the istogram, the darker the photo will be. There is no "perfect" histogram, because creative photographers take creative photos, which have all kinds of unlikely looking histograms.). You can always check the histogram later but soon u will cherish the usefulness of getting it live.

5.It has Leica lens. It produces some super colors and finest details.

6.ISO ranges from 100 to 3200. Although it is always recommended to use lower ISO to minimize noise but hey, u may need it once suddenly.

7.Shutter speed ranges from very fast to very slow (as slow as 60 sec). Although longer shutter speeds (1/60th or 1/30th) are more likely to be blurred than shorter shutter speeds (1/250th or 1/400th), but longer shutter speed is required in low light condition with lower ISO. I would recommend u to use a Tripod in that case (a basic tripod is less than $20).

8.F-stop ranges from f/2.6 to f/8. Larger aperture numbered (f/8.0 or f/11.0) result in more depth-of-field than smaller aperture numbers (f/2.8 or f/4.0). The higher the f-stop number, the smaller the opening and greater the depth of field. So here, f/8.0=to maximize depth-of-field

9.Here u have Aaperture priority mode and Shutter priority mode. These modes are automatic--meaning, for example, that the aperture priority mode automatically sets the shutter speed based upon the aperture setting -- you have to first select an appropriate aperture setting! The same thing applies to the shutter priority mode.You set the shutter speed to be what you want and then the camera sets the aperture to get the right exposure.

10.There are lots of scene modes like party, fireworks, pets, baby (this particular has some cool features) and lots more. But I prefer Manual mode like for fireworks (f/8.0, ISO 100, Shutter speed 4-5sec). I have uploaded the firework pics and I am happy with the deliveries.

11.There is also programmable custom modes where u can save any of urs favorite settings for future use.

12.The video quality is great. It was my least expectation to get HD video from a still camera. Camera jurk is minimum with `Mode 2' stabilization. U can get great video even if holding it with hands. The good thing is that u can also use the optical zoom in videos. What else one can ask from a primarily still camera.

There are also few down things like in iA mode it produces high sharpness after removing the noise which may be unacceptable to someone. During video recording, if u zoom in or zoom out too quickly, auto focus takes time that causes some blur in the video. Moreover u can't get RAW format in iA mode. In bright sunlight, the LCD as usual gets little dim (that's when the Histogram is useful). In low light in iA mode, some noise is visible without flash.

Although there are few drawbacks but those are not at all serious compared to the great features it has. Performance is superb and value of price is also great. I would definitely recommend this camera to those who are mainly concerned about quality and performance.

Olympus EVOLT 10.0-Megapixel Digital SLR Camera

The small light circle also makes the Olympus view finder smaller and darker. If you peer through, say, a budget Nikon, the view is noticeably larger and brighter.

However, the E520 has image stabilization in the body, rather than the lenses. Lens stabilization is slightly better - it also works while you are framing up the shot - but obviously you pay for it in every lens. Many Canon/Nikon lenses do not have IS.

Neither the E520 nor the kit lenses are weather sealed. Be careful in the rain or at the beach. Fortunately, the Olympus self-cleaning sensor is probably the best one out there. I have not had to clean my sensor yet.

You will need an extra battery. The focusing in low light gets slow or fails completely as the battery runs down. I have a Duracell spare - it has been fine.

If you are into HDR (and you WILL be), the E-520 offers only +-1 EV brackets. You will have to use a tripod and fiddle with exposure between each shot for other brackets.

I recommend making a "lens plan" to decide whether to get the body only, or a 1 or 2 lens kit.

Olympus is respected for the quality of the kit lenses. These lens (the 14-42 and 40-150) are extremely compact, with good image quality. They primarily give up speed, but they are well within the speed range of other brand's kit lenses. If you buy the kit lenses, you will look jealously at the 14-54, and the 12-60 "walking around" lenses - these are highly regarded but much more expensive. Except for the extra speed, most consumers will not notice the difference on a 5x4 print with these lenses over the kit lenses. With larger prints, or with low light, the more expensive glass is worth having.

Overall, Olympus lenses are highly regarded, even by people who are not fans of the format. Expect to pay $200 to $600 for "Standard" grade, $600 to $1200 for "High Grade", and $1200 to $2000 for "Super High Grade" lenses. Olympus also offers a few obligatory $5000 monsters - these are well into purely-theoretical for an average user like myself.

I added the 9-18 and 70-300 lenses to my 2 kit lenses, for roughly an extra $1000. This gives me coverage from 9 through 300. These are all Olympus "Standard" quality lenses, good image quality, but not weather sealed, and a bit slow.

It is fair to say that the four-thirds system is a bit of a pariah in the camera world. There are a few pro's shooting with it, but you should be aware that Canon has over 60% of the market, and Nikon something like 15%. If you search B&H, you will find pages and pages of Canon lenses, but only 2 pages of Olympus. Many photographers will pointedly sniff at your 4:3 ratio pictures, instead of their "classic" 3:2 ratio. However, 4:3 is a better crop if you often print out 8x10 pictures instead of the small 5x3 or 6x4, and Walmart and many other developers offer a 5x4 size.

I wish there were more lenses to choose from - yet I would still buy the ones I already bought. I wish the noise performance were better - but I have never really lost a shot because of it, and may add an E-30 body to my bag soon. I'm satisfied with the 4/3 format, and very happy with my camera.

another digicam without an EVF or a regular viewfinder. Too many times I've been stuck where I can't see what I'm taking.

5) 10mp. This isn't super important, but it helps when you want to get some shots that came out blurry at 10mp but look fine whene scaled down, so you can still get a nice 8 x 10 out of it. Having said that, I shoot at 3mp or under most times, for regular family and fun shots. Anything serious or artsy, go the full 10, perhaps.

6) HD video with ZOOM capability!!! Very few cameras allow zooming. The quality is excellent even in normal indoor lighting.

7) Great LCD. Big and hi-res.

And more. Like great controls; SMALL camera and very lightweight. Fits in a fanny pack. Comes with a lens hood, for sunny outdoor shots. Lecia lens!! Fantastic. Quick and responsive. USes SDHC cards. Great battery life.

Truly, this is a no-brainer. And for around $300, it's just plain AMAZING.

I look forward to learning more about what this camera can do from a camera geek friend of mine who is anxious to see it after sending them some shots I took. Great camera for a hobby photographer !

Compared to the last model, Canon also changed to a different battery, which is a little larger capacity I think. The old battery was pretty great, and I like that it had been the same for several models. Over time I'd built up a good collection of spares, but now I have to start over for the new battery size.

So...IMHO, buy the older model, you'll be happier. I mean, really this is for snapshots, right? There's no *real* reason you need 10MP to print postcards or even 8x10, it just gives you a bit more flexibility to crop or zoom, but 8MP is *juuust fine*. Personally, I'm switching back to my EX-S880 I think.

In general, what I like about Casio's cameras is:

* Great scene modes. The "Best Shot" feature has a huge variety of really cool scene modes, including "white board" mode. I have used many of these, such as portrait, backlit, landscape, landscape with portrait, night scene, white board, ...it goes on. Really useful.

* Well-organized UI for features, although maybe it's just easy for me because I've used these cameras for so long.

* Fantastic video capability. This camera takes great movies, and I use that feature all the time. I wish you could zoom in and out while capturing though.

* Beautiful big LCDs. However, I feel that on the EX-S10, the camera really can't make the best use of the LCD. Almost every picture I take on the S10 *looks* blurry and soft in review on the LCD, but when I put it on the laptop, it is usually great. I can only conclude that the scaling algorithm they're using to shrink a 10MP image down to that tiny number of pixels in an LCD (uh, .077MP) doesn't work so well for maintaining some sort of sharp image. This sounds like a nit-pick, but in reality it really freaks me out and makes me not feel very confident about the images I'm capturing.

* Beautiful, sturdy build. I can't tell you how many times I've dropped my Casios over time. Maybe that sounds bad, but the point is that I've never broken one. Okay, I did crack the screen on my EX-S770, but I think something heavy was placed on it, not a drop. Usually I put some of that plastic scratch film on the screen and forego a case, because with a case it would be too bulky to put in my pocket and too awkward to whip out quickly for some snaps... which would defeat the purpose. Sure, my cameras get a bit scratched, but not much. The case is a beautiful paint color and it's metal, so it takes the abuse really well.

Here's what I don't like...

Stupid proprietary USB connector. I've always hated the fact that the only way to get data off the camera without pulling the card is to use Casio's proprietary dock... there's not even a cable you can plug into the connector. I really wish they would switch to the now-available "micro-usb" which is smaller than the more common mini-B, but standard. When I buy these cameras, I never bother to take the docks or the software out of the box, I really don't like installing custom buggy photo software that puts stuff all over your computer. So, I always pull the card to download my images.

Disappointing low-light performance. As I mentioned already, the low light performance on this particular model is not as good as it should be. The camera is always slowing down the shutter to very long delays and complaining that there's not enough light.

Anti-shake is very grainy. Sure, you get the shot when you might not otherwise, but the image will likely be grainy and have lots of digital noise (pixels that are off-color from what they should be, like green, red, and blue specks floating around).

God help me, at one point I am pretty sure that I sacrificed a live chicken. All the while, I had my older Olympus taking shots in the sames settings on AUTO. The older camera took great shots. I must stress, I took well over 200 test shots with each camera. The 1050SW was returned for a new camera from a different brand...which is taking great photos out of the box with no time spent on the manual yet.

Maybe it's me. I hope it's just me. Bottom line: if you're like me and want a "point and shoot", this may not be the camera for you. An advanced user might have a better go of it...but 10.1MP and a sexy design won't be of much help if you can't easily take a photo.

reason for me buying this camera, looks good but it runs at a data rate that is just a little too fast for my 2.4-gh Pentium IV desktop - the video skips and freezes. It runs fine on my newer dual-core laptop. Looks like I'll have to do some upgrading on hardware and software (for video editing).

Olympus EVOLT 10.0-Megapixel Digital SLR Camera

I take my cameras hiking and the added features of the e520 were not ones I considered deal breakers. However, it was the price of the 2 lens package that tipped me over the edge to buy the e510 as opposed to the e520.

While these are both very good, sturdy cameras there are some annoyances they share.
1. Both apparently have trouble focusing in low light. But, my experience says it has to be pretty dark for this to be a real problem.
2. I was aware of the low light focus problem when I bought the camera and figured one can always switch to manual focus. But, the focus ring on the lens requires a lot of movement making straight manual focus less useful than I had hoped it would be. Fortunately, Olympus includes a mode where you can auto-focus and then touch up manually.
3. Live view works but, compared to point and shoot cameras, is clunky and will never replace using the viewfinder, not that I want to. (I suspect this is true of all DSLR's with the possible exception of Sony and the cheapest camera they have with a Live View equivalent, the A300, costs more.) Live View is perhaps best reserved for macro shots.
4. I'm not sure if this is true of the e520, but on the e510 Live View seems to drain the battery at a very rapid rate. I'd be surprised if I could get 60 Live View pictures from a battery charge. (I've never seen this mentioned in reviews and would be curious if anyone else has had this experience.) However, I do believe the claim of about 500 shots without Live View.

I started photography using a 4 x 5 Speed Graflex (yes I know this dates me), graduated to a Canon film rangefinder, and Nikon film SLRs all the while doing my own darkroom work in B&W. I enjoyed the manual aspects of these early cameras I used and with my digital point and shoots cameras missed easy manual adjustments. I bought this camera so that it would be easier for me to be creative, that is, adjust ISO, f-stop, shutter speed, white balance, etc. And, compared to my Panasonic FZ5, the e510 is much easier to adjust, but still not as easy as my film cameras (not that I would give up digital photography or the digital darkroom). Magazine articles have noted that the menu system is complicated. I don't find this to be true, but then I'm used to Windows. In fact, I find most everything is easily accessible and, at most, just a few clicks away.

As noted above, image quality is excellent. I have yet to try RAW because the SHQ JPEG's with minimal compression (1:2.7) are reputed to be as good as RAW. But, as with all cameras with high mp sensors, be prepared for large files; these SHQ images are 6 - 7 mb. Of course, if you want the image quality advantage of a DSLR large file size is inevitable.

All in all I am happy with the e510. It is a good sturdy camera that produces excellent images. The lenses are lightweight and well matched to the camera. However, with advances in sensor design, I suspect that in the near future superzoom cameras such as the Panasonic FZ28 will provide image quality similar to today's DSLR without the price, bulk, or necessity to carry an extra lens. For folks who don't want to fuss with a camera or extra lenses but want a large range of lens focal lengths, superzooms might already be a better choice than a DSLR.

the outer feel. The buttons gets a cheap feel compared to the other competitors like Nikon P80, Sony H50 and the Canons. But if you just care for quality photos and ignore the aesthetic aspects this camera is definitely a best buy.

Although I am not an expert in cameras or its technicalities, but photography is my hobby and I found this camera just the right thing to choose off the lot.

Olympus EVOLT 10.0-Megapixel Digital SLR Camera

only used it for 2 days. A few of the things I've noticed as of my 3rd day with the camera are: This camera feels good in my hand. The grip is shaped just right to get a good hand hold and not be hitting buttons with my thumb. It feels a lot more like a pro-grade SLR than a consumer grade (at least to me). The mode and setting dials are conveniently located. The LCD is good. The menus, while there are a LOT of them, are pretty easy to understand once you play with the camera a while. They are bright and easy to read. I like them better than the Canon XSi. You might forget exactly where a sub-menu is if you don't use the camera for a while, but I suspect the average shooter won't be adjusting every little setting just to take pics. My guess is that most people will shoot jpegs and do some EV adjustments, etc. Plus, there are short cut buttons on the camera that can control the ISO, single vs. continuous shooting, etc. The overlay grid is kind of cool, mostly to play with if you have much experience. It has a square green box that shows you where it took the settings readings. As there are 3 focus points, when it focuses, small red dots light up to show you where the focus is. Basically I found this to be very helpful. In lower light, fast action or lots of differently spaced areas in a shot, it's easy to have the camera get your subject a bit out of focus. I haven't used the face recognition or auto-gradation (shadow adjustment technology) yet. Some of the articles say that a lot of the features are for a transition to a higher grade camera from a PAS. I disagree with that. While some are cutesy, they would help most anybody, especially in rush situations where you don't have to analyze things and make a quick decision. And, not everybody wants to scrutinize every situation and become super photographer. Mom or grandma might want a camera to photograph the kids at football games, or take fireworks pics with on July 4th, etc. Settings that have automatically compensated for variables (at least to some extent) can and do come in handy. I've used them in the past. The day my camera arrived, I did photograph a girls' basketball game at the school where I teach and I was pleased with the results. People complain the viewfinder is too small. It is a bit small compared to Canon, but it's still plenty big. I read where the shape of the 4/3rds sensor causes that perception, as compared to traditional viewfinders/sensors which are rectangular. The read out is a tad small, but the major info at the top such as f-stop and shutter speed is readable. Those are the important ones. The small clutter of information at the bottom is more of a learn what's where and just acknowledge it's set. Once you've set them in the control panel menu, do you really need to squint to read them and remind yourself they are there? Just hit the info button for the LCD and that will be displayed...a lot bigger. I used the view finder and 1600 ISO. It performed as expected, although I did have to adjust the controls at first as the girls were too dark...sort of shadowy looking. The adjustment cleared the pic up fine. Looking at the pics on my TV and computer, they are well exposed and very sharp, with vivid colors even on natural. The camera LCD flashes on areas with blown highlights, but in a gym, that's to be expected. Most any picture will have high and low key areas. The histograms will prove handy. People complained the LCD focus is too slow. For stability and a sense of feel for the composure and camera, I used the viewfinder A/F. Putting my elbows against my chest and the camera against my face is something I've done for many years. holding a camera out in front of me is just not natural, nor is it good for low speed shots. Plus, it looks sort of hokey...like my elderly mother holding up a PAS and saying "smile..." Basically, it performed top notch. Most of the time, I didn't even pre-focus and it caught the action. The LCD did take a bit longer, but in my opinion, LCD is for landscapes, wildlife, family group shots, sneaky shooting, etc. The camera does come with a little piece that slides over the viewfinder slots to block light from the sensor when using the LCD. I put it in one of the card pockets of my LowePro camera strap, so it would be handy and I wouldn't lose it. I have both the 14-42mm and the 70-150mm lenses and while the depth of field isn't as shallow as I'd like it, and the bokeh isn't comparable to top-end lenses, you wouldn't expect them to be. Other than the f-stops are not as low as I'd prefer, they are great lenses. I wish they would blur the background better, but different focal lengths can help the aperture out to some degree. The 300mm zoom is on my Christmas list. The 3-pack of lenses would give a person 28-600mm zoom equivalent. For a hobbyist or even a paid shooter, I would be hard-pressed to think of a situation where you would be wanting more. I haven't mentioned a lot of the technical details. You can get information overload on many sites if you want that. If you want to ask me questions, please do so. I'd be pleased to hear other folks' thoughts. I'm experimenting a bit more every day to learn it. I am very pleased with it. In my opinion, you cannot go wrong with this camera, especially considering the quality of the pictures, the features, and the price. I added a Gary Fong puff diffuser for the on board flash. the photos themselves, the right settings can really improve quality, but they take some time to get to know. I found that Auto doesn't always work that well. It's just not that smart.

I found this camera to be great for the beach, but preferred my slr for the forest and nature photography.

The more i get to konw the camera, the more i like it. I appreciate the durability, but will use my Nikon d40 for faster, sharper images when i really want good ones. This camera is good for on the go and small enough to be kept in a purse or in the water.
