I had researched this video card on other websites looking for a PCI video card. I have an older intel motherboard and wanted to stay with Nvidia products. Other websites showed this to be a PCI card. One of the pictures on Amazon's site shows a box saying PCI Express. This picture is not for this video card as this card is PCI, not PCI Express. I had contacted PNY after ordering this to confirm, they don't make the GeForce 8400GS in a PCI Express card. The other picture of the video card itself doesn't depict this video card either but the written info. about the video card is correct.
The video card itself is easy to install, works without any problems. If you have an older motherboard that doesn't support PCI Express this is the video card for you.

I was having a hard time with my intergrated graphic card in my system playing games. After installing the Pny Verto GeForce 8500 GT Card everything is running great on my system. I love it. And you cant find a better price than Overstock.com.

I purchased this video card to replace an ATI video card from the last generation of cards. it miles ahead of it. With 1GB of ram it flies on all online games I play including Guildwars, WOW, WAR, and DDO. It runs Crysis and Halo 3 at a very playable framerate at maximum graphics settings running at 1280X840 resolution. I highly recommend it if your looking to get great graphics at a reasonable price.

Be careful! Why? Well... you may not be able to play older games with this card haha.
Really though, I was playing Painkiller Black Edition and upgraded to this card (from two 2600 crossfired cards) and now I can't play the game because all the monsters are wicked fast lol.
Other things to know:
The card is hot hot hot. I thought that was just the x2 version with two gpu's but the single version seems to run at about the same temp - around 70c wow!
The card is huge in length. I have a mid tower (brand new Cooler Master 690 No P/s) and it fit with very little room to spare. If your case is on the smallish side you may want to take measurements and look at what power connections, ide or sata connections, or power cables might be in the way.
This card requires two power connections.
You really will need good air flow in your case or water cooling with this card. The ambient temps in my case (according to Everest Ultimate) runs around 32c. My old case ran about 10 degrees hotter

First off, here are my specs: Dell Inspiron 531 with an AMD 64 X2 4400+ @ 2.4ghz, 3gb ram, and a 250gb hd.
Trust me, I spent countless hours researching which video card was best for me. I wanted to run a good amount of new games without worrying about not meeting the system requirements. If you've read reviews online of the 8800GT/9800GT you'll notice that it's THE midrange card for the performance minded user. I can tell you that this is definitely the case. With my old card (XFX 8600GT XXX overclocked to 620mhz) I was able to score 5329 in 3DMARK06 and run a pretty good amount of games like F.E.A.R. and Call of Duty 4 at medium to medium-high settings with good FPS. With this 9800GT I was able to score an 8368 in 3DMARK06 and run Call of Duty 4, Medal of Honor Airborne, and other games like this at maximum settings (with AA) and get great framerates. Crysis will even run well at medium settings. You'll definitely notice how much better the 9800GT performs. If you want to kick

If you're reading this, I'll assume you already know about the 4850 and that it effortlessly dominates almost any game or application you throw at it. What you may not know is that this particular model has a very obviously different fan and heatsink. The bad news? It is MASSIVE. It effectively makes the 4850 a 2-slot card, so if you don't have the room, stick with another model. The good news? The 4850 and 4870s are notorious for having heat "issues" (not real problems, but somewhat worrisome) with the stock fan/heatsink. This monster completely eliminates the problem without having to use the "fan-fix" or use an application like RivaTuner to control the fan yourself. It idles at 56 degrees and at full load the highest I've seen it get to is 74. These are very acceptable numbers, especially when you consider the stock model's temps of roughly 80 degrees idle and over 90 at full load.
Due in part to the fan/heatsink, this card seems to overclock with little complaint. I run mine at 710mhz

This nice little graphics card won't overtax your PSU and will give you just about everything you need if you're a mid-level gamer and sometime video editor like me. I upgraded from my on-board graphics (6150) to this. After installing the card, I could use higher video settings on WOW and still notice an increase on my avg. frame rate from 20 (on-board graphics) to 60 (8600GT).
Some say that it runs hot, but I haven't noticed it doing so thus far. The included manual has a lot of pages, but isn't actually very useful. Does not have dual DVI, but rather one DVI and one VGA in addition to the S-video interface.

Do not even think about getting this card. This card delivers such a heat that can burn a piece of paper if it's near the Graphics card, I never noticed such a heat degree in all the other cards. I got 80c temp on Idle and 87c on load and when I play Crysis this thing crushes down it starts with dots then noise then a black screen. I don't recommend this piece of junk and I'm gonna return it.
Thank you ATI and AMD for the "HEAT"

I've thrown everything in Valve's Orange Box at this, including HL2: Lost Coast with High Dynamic Range lighting, and it worked perfectly.
In addition to gaming, it renders text and movies great, and displays colors and shadows far more accurately than my onboard Intel chipset. Couldn't ask for more.

This card is amazing. Of course I went from a 7300GS to this, so there really isn't a comparison when going from a low end card. One warning to potential buyers. Make sure you have adequate cooling for this card. You will see through numerous reviews that this card runs very hot. Mine actually elevated my Case temperature high enough to set off CPU overheating alerts. I had to revamp my case cooling to accomodate this card. After that though, everything works flawlessly. Just makesure you have a case with ample cooling capablilty. Grid Racing looks amazing!!!

This card plays all my games at max settings with out any lag or issues, stays quiet (will have to listen carefully with the A/C on to notice that fan's noise at 100% power.
It also runs pretty cool (idle 45 load 55).
Games tested.
Command and Conquer 3 (flawless)
Supreme commander (a bajillion units fighting and it stills run perfectly)
Empire Earth 3 (Working great at max settings too)
Final fantasy IX (over 100 characters at the same spot with out any animation/chat filters and not even a stutter)
This card is just great, its not even overclocked and its butchering all the games I own.
A giant step from my 5500FX.

Great card, especially for the price! I didn't expect the 3D game performance to be this good. Image quality via DVI on my old Eizo 18" 1280x1024 LCD is great. Everything looks pleasing to the eye and causes no strain.
XP Pro SP3 rig (forceware 175.xx) paired with ASUS M2N-MX SE, AMD Athlon 64 LE-1600 2.2GHz 45W CPU and 1GB Mushkin DDR2 800 in an In Win IW-Z589T.AQ350BL Black Steel MicroATX Case with (very good) 350W Power Supply this little video card idles 40C, is always silent, and plays HL2 games on high/2xAA/1280x1024 avg 40fps. Image quality is very good, game is playable, and it's all good.
GPU temp gets around 70C under heavy load like Furmark+OCCT/Prime95 (CPU max 40C stock cooling).
The whole rig cost me $350 for the hardware... a great backup computer to my major ($$$) gaming PC...
Also, winamp runs Milkdrop visualizer in desktop and fullscreen modes without a glitch... looks awesome

This card is just awesome for the price. It's super fast. It's ridiculously cheap. It runs cool. It doesn't require a lot of power. (I'm running it on a Dell with the stock 305 watt PSU) What else can you ask for? If you're looking for a graphics upgrade, and don't want to spend a fortune, then this card is a winner.

After reading the reviews I went out yesterday and picked up this card.
I have spent about 10 hours of pretty hard use and it has not glitched yet.
NOTE: the box does come with adapters to go from 2 4 pin to 1 6 pin power plugs, of course your powersupply still needs to be up to the task. I have a 550 watt supply but it only had 1 6 pin plug, so I was concerned I would have to "rig" something. I am running a Nvidia motherboard 2 gig ram, Q6700 processor overclocked to 3.2 ghz and 3 seagate 750 gig and 1 500 gig internal hard drives and have not had a issue. I have a systemax built system (BTW - not counting extra hard drives total out of pocket for system was ~ 1000.00 - before this card - that included the 8600).
I originally had a Nvidia 8600 - upgraded to a new 9800 - took that back and exchanged it for this. It has handled everything I have thrown at it - f.e.a.r. - crysis (High - running dx9), halflife 2 and several highdef movies.
For the money (heck, forget the money even)

At the 200 dollar price point, your choices right now (August 2008) are basically the HD4850, and the 9800GTX (or 9800GTX+). Both cards are excellent values for the price, but ultimately I went with the 4850 for two reasons. The first reason is that the 4850 is single slot (compared to the 9800GTX being two slot, and a bit longer I believe). The second is that the 4850 doesn't use as much power as the 9800GTX (and I'm using it with a 430watt Antec power supply, which is lower than the recommended 450watt for the 4850.)
The reason I give the 4850 4 stars and not 5, is that ATI has released this card (and let it sit for a month now) with drivers that do not work. What I mean by this, is that the drivers don't properly tell the fan on the card that it needs to spin, when the temperature of the GPU core gets to a certain temperature. The result of this is that the card will idle at 90 celcius, and go over 100 celcius at load (which is not good, trust me). The problem applies to all 4850's

I bought this card because it's better than the original 9800 gtx
pros
-better fan speed at 100% takes the card as low as 39 c in an ambient of 40 c yeap i live in the caribean. the old one i had a 8800 gts at full fan speed it only came down to 54 c, you cant compare such a great cooling system. measurements made at iddle not load.
-better clock and overclock speed
-takes hot air out of the case
-i can play crysis with no flags, before i had an 8800 gts only gave me 26fps now 45 fps at 1280 x 1024
-for the price is very good
cons
-long card 11 inches it touches the rear end of my hard disks.
other thoughts, i was goin to buy the 4850 form ati but it's fan dosent take out hot air, also the card is way hot, even at iddle it's 77 c with full fan speed.
i will keep on updating the review
new stuff before in 3dmark 2006 was 10,850 marks
now 16,700, very good score, i have a quad core also.

I have 2 of these cards. I used so far for over 4 months without a glitch. Installed in a snap and worked on Crossfire config flawlessy. When I got them they were the top-notch ATI cards. Today are on the second step after 4800 series. At this price (I spent way more than this 4 months ago) are great cards for their performances. I would suggest this card to any gamer with lower budget. In my opinion video quality is higher than Nvidia. Nvidia can be sometimes more performing, but I like to trade a bit of speed for higher quality and this card does his job pretty well.

I upgraded to this card from a crossfire configuration of two HD3870s. I intend to eventually get another HD4870 and run them in crossfire, but I'm waiting for the drivers to mature a little bit so that scaling is improved.
This card rocks. I get 40-50 frames playing Crysis on "high" settings with no AI or AF. In Mass Effect, I get 60+ frames, with everything set to max. Every game, same deal, this card gets awesome frame rates.
This card does tend to run hot, but that is easily fixed by tweaking a profile in Catalyst Control Center. I run the fan at 35% and the card in idle is around 48C and 75-80C under load.
The advantages of this card over the 4850 are that it has faster GDDR5 memory (the 4850 has GDR3 that operates at a lower frequency). This comes into play on higher end games. It might not be worth the price difference if you're just a casual gamer, but if you're serious about wanting the best price/performance that is out there, the 4870 is a winner.
I bought a Sapphire

Looking to play some of those newer games with very good frame rates? This card is definitely it. What you get: Pretty much everything in the pictures presented, s-video cable, dvi to hdmi; vga, crossfire connectors, y connectors for those that do not have 2 pci-e connections (you will need them) and video connection (for what I'm not exactly sure). Comes packaged nice and neat and simple instructions on how to install (pretty much drop in the card and install the pcie connections thats it). It also comes with a cd w/ catalyst ati controls so you can overclock (doesn't have crossfire?). Installation on my motherboard require a little bit of moving things. If you have a Dell Inspiron 530 this card will fit, but will be a little tight on the bottom due to the sata connector being under back end of the card. It really isn't a big problem, but just be VERY careful. Also I had to upgrade my psu to 500w as this card will take a significant amount of juice to run. The recommendation is 550 but

From the description "Dual DVI / S-video" you would think this card has two DVI outputs and one S-video output. No, it has one DVI, one VGA and one S-video output. Although the documentation inside the box shows two DVI outputs, the card itself does not.
