and looked better overall. I tried messing with some settings but couldn't get it looking as good as my 40" did. (note: I have my picture mode set to 'dynamic', and it truly does dynamically seem to adapt to video games or TV or whatever I'm watching)

This TV is so great that it makes DVDs look better and standard definition video looks great! Sometimes I have to get really close to the TV to convince myself that it really isn't HD. Of course, when you put on something that's true HD (like 1080i or 1080p), it puts everything else to shame. In other words, you can tell the difference between standard def and high def, and yet the former is still better than you may expect. I feel like the main difference from far away between the two is how much more vibrant and real the colors are in HD as opposed to SD, but when you get up close you can tell that the SD content is just grainier and more fuzzy around the edges, and you see more artifacts. From a distance of like 7 feet though, you can't tell the artifacts are there. Of course, this is all somewhat dependent on your cable/satellite provider.

I have a PS3 so I can attest to how incredible games like Metal Gear Solid 4 and Rock Band look AND sound! MGS4 will have you thinking that they're real people and the gorgeous environments really shine on these TV. The otherwise mundane backgrounds in Rock Band look really real on this TV. I watched some Seinfeld episodes from DVD on my brother's TV (he has a 46" series 7) and it's like a totally new show! I also have a couple of Blu-ray movies (Kill Bill 1 & 2), which output 1080p with PCM 5.1 sound, and it seriously felt like when I first saw the movies in the theater. Obviously, the screen isn't as big, but the experience with the picture quality and the sound made me forget that I was even watching it in my living room at times. I really flipped for how perfect the colors were, which proves how great Blu-ray is and how well this TV can handle it. (note: I have my PS3 connected via HDMI, which is really the only way to go)

I do have a couple of gripes though. The whole dlna thing does not work for me at all. I have Vista Home Edition and whenever I try playing video on the TV using their crappy software from my computer, it always errors out (it doesn't crash the TV, just that application). The remote is not the best. The button layout doesn't always make the most sense, and the clickwheel is terrible. Fortunately, it is a clickwheel so you don't have to spin it around, which is really painful. The remote feels kind of cheap, but at least it has a backlight.

As you can see though, those are pretty minor things. The Info Link feature is pretty neat and lets me see what the weather is every morning so I can dress appropriately. The TV looks very stylish, and I don't even see the "touch of color" around the edge (though the picture refracts a bit around the edges). It has a TON of options if you really want to tweak it to your liking, but it's not always easy navigating through these menus.

Overall, this TV is ridiculously high quality. It was my first real TV purchase ever and I'm so glad I made it. It was a lot of money for me to give up, but I reasoned that it was better going with quality than a cheaper TV that I'd have to replace a couple of years later. This TV will last me a long time (after all, not everything is in 1080p now, so even if they end up with something better later I don't think it'll be very popular until after this TV has outlived its usefulness). I work hard so it's really nice to come home and relax and know that no matter what I watch on this TV that it's going to look great and I'll be treating myself. I know it's just a TV, but after a hard day it's still a nice perk.

* Sony's TV menu system is really good. I find it very easy to navigate to the feature I want to change. If you're use to the Sony PS3 or PSP, it's the same thing. Also, Sony gives you a free connection to an interactive TV Guide station. Very nice to navigate and read but it's only available if you watch the TV through cable without the company's cable box attached.
* Really good remote. It's long and slim and feels very good in your hand. Nice button distinctions. I'm sad that I don't use it more because my cable company has it's own huge, gray monster that I must use in order to navigate their cable box.
* The various external connections are plentiful and easy to reach. With 4 HDMI connections, you won't be needing more anytime soon. I've got a cable box, VCR player, DVD player, Stereo receiver, and a game system plugged into the TV and still, I've got many more connections.
* HDTV cable programs in 1080i looks great on this set (BTW, you can't get 1080p through the cable company). I haven't fiddled with the custom color settings because the standard one is perfect for viewing TV. A press on the remote "picture" button offers you "cinema" and "Vivid" (great for game machines) settings as well as a custom setting option. The standard 480i picture is acceptable on this TV. I have the TV set to wide-zoom any 480i picture which fills the 16:9 screen but cuts off a little on the top and bottom of the picture. You can set the TV to put it into the 4:3 shape if you must but my wife said "we paid for 42 inches and I want to see everything in 42 inches." Wife wins.
* The sound is very good on this TV. It was one of the top (3) reasons we bought this TV. We don't have any fancy Dolby 5.1 or 7.1 setup. And we watch plenty of "regular" TV that really doesn't need the additional speakers. The sound is crisp and clear coming from the small front facing speakers. Other TV's (won't mention brands) have back mounted speakers that either fire backwards or downwards. You can't get quality sound that way no matter what the manufacturer tells you.

Cons:
* We wish it had an earphone jack. Like me, you can optionally port the sound (either digital optical or RCA jacks) to a receiver and use the receiver's headphone jack when needed.

And that's it. I honestly can't think of another con for this TV. I won't count it being a 60 instead of 120hz TV because that's not what I bought and I don't think it matters that much and I do watch plenty of sports.

It's early in the life of this TV but I'm impressed so far. I did buy an additional 4 year warranty so I'm covered. This technology is too new and complicated not to get an additional warranty unless you're a penny-foolish gambler or wealthy.

But a camera panning a scene has the TV "jumping." This was the reason I'd been leaning toward plasma. I'd suggest watching a program like NYPD Blue, Law & Order, one of those scenes in ER where someone's being rolled through the hospital, or something similar to make sure you're satisfied.

* This is either a problem with my cable operator/component jacks or the TV, but I still can't figure out how to get closed captioning to appear. It's not critical for me -- it's a convenience feature. But my neighbors are deaf, so depending on the purchaser, I'd check into this before comitting.

* All that said, the picture is very nice in other cases. TW Cable has a dedicated Mad Men HD channel (sadly, AMC is not usually in HD) and it's just gorgeous. Food TV however reveals the colors are a bit too colorful though: celerey isn't that green; lemons aren't that yellow. But until I work out how to adjust the color settigs, I'm fine with TV looking a bit more vibrant.

I believe the motion problem is probably the nature of the beast: LCD isn't fast enough yet. But with that limitation in mind, I think the 650 is fine LCD.

was the clencher in my decision to spend a thousand plus dollars over the Net. I'm glad I did. My cost savings over any local source (Best Buy, Sears, etc.) exceeded $250. My total cost with an HDMI cable was around $1140.

Just as promised in all the reviews, the LN40A550 was quick and simple to set up. The picture is razor sharp, and the colors are true to life. There is little or no need to make color or contrast corrections from channel to channel. Some of the reviewers had bashed the A550's sound system. I find it to be okay, but, if sound quality had been a very high priority, I heard sweeter sounds from a comparable (and pricier) Sony unit.

I can't find enough superlatives to describe my satisfaction with Amazon.com on this purchase. I paid no shipping or handling costs, and the TV was delivered to my living room in three days after my on-line order. The delivery was made by a well-groomed, articulate employee of a respected shipping firm. That employee unboxed and unwrapped the TV and even offered to haul away the box and shipping materials. I should have availed myself of that offer because Samsung currently is offering one year of in-home service on this model.

My wife and I have satisfactorily dealt with Amazon.com many times on little items. We have never been disappointed with their service. We are extremely pleased with this recent major purchase. I vouch that anyone who buys the Samsung LN40A550 from Amazon.com can look forward to an experience that is "all good."

I personally like the slight variance in color. It gives a certain uniqueness with this specific design element that makes it stand out. The glossy screen is another thing that some people are not a fan of. But, once again I like the appearance of it and after having viewed other TV's with the same contrast ratio and brightness, the glossy screen does seem to give the picture quality an edge. The colors seemed to appear more vibrant as well as the blacks seeming more black. However, I would not recommend putting this in a room that light is going to shine directly on it because there will be some screen glare. So, just be aware of that.

All of the higher end LCD's have it now and it does definitely make a difference. It really does smooth out the image but it looks like something you have never seen before. It gives it an almost exactly true to life image. Some people refer to it as almost 3D. It is very good for watching sports. But, I'm not a huge fan of it for regular television or movies (I keep it set to low for these). This is once again one of those things that I would recommend trying in the store to see how you feel about.

The one thing on this TV that many people say is lacking is the speakers, and while I do agree they are not audiophile quality, they sound like any other TV speakers. If this is a big deal to you, I would check out the LN40A750 as it has a built in subwoofer to enhance sound quality. But, if you really want truly good sound, you must dish out the money for a home entertainment system with nice speakers. Simple as that.

Sony's on-line & e-mail help were not very helpful so I'm going to have to spend some time on the phone with their support line - hopefully that will prove more helpful and I can get access to my music as well.

I have not experienced the "sparkling" effect mentioned by another reviewer - hopefully that's a limited issue that will not crop up after further burn-in.

Overall the set looks great - the S-Video connection from my non-HD DirecTV receiver looks better than on another smaller HDTV set I have (Insignia - BestBuy's house brand). Interesting the Insignia seemed to do a bit better in pulling in the off-air signal than the Sony (with weaker signals - we live quite a ways away from any transmitters) until I went and purchaed a new antenna signal amplifer (I think the one I had had gone, or was starting to go, bad) but now I get great HDTV picture off the air and when connected to a Sony upconverting DVD player my existing CDs look great.

UPDATE: After no help from Sony Support, I have finally determined / realize that Music/MP3s are not supported over DLNA. To Sony's credit, the manual does not claim music support of MP3 - only refers to photos - but the fact that you can play music from USB seems to be it a bit ambigious - perhaps I just wanted this to funciton like the Samsung 7 series that allows music streaming as well as the RSS feeds and more - oh well.... at least I have pics working - still keeping it at 4 stars due to the poor level of Sony's support in helping me clearly realize this basic fact (after using Chat, e-mail and phone support).

UPDATE 2: Having issues getting the "built-in" TV Guide to let me select channels I want displayed and keep those without it hiding ones I select or adding ones I don't want - once again a couple of rounds with Sony support has not provide much support.... granted these features are the "extras" and don't affect the TV viewing quality - which is excellent - just frustrating things when you purchase something with this bit of a premium against the similar class competitors....

access most of my media files on my computer *from* the TV! Brilliant! Worth the extra money, by not having to pause it from my computer in another room. (Note on this, you can't rewind and fast-forward computer files after it gets past a certain file size. That means if you are watching a movie and accidentally press stop instead of pause, it's best to watch the rest on a computer. Samsung needs to work on this for future TVs).

- 1GB BUILT-IN "ENTERTAINMENT" CONTENT
This is essentially pointless-especially the games. I wish I could format it and do other things with that space, but it doesn't hurt the purchase. I'll just access it when I want to learn how to make a Salmon Sandwich.

- VIDEO QUALITY
After calibration, HD inputs from a digital antenna and Blu-Ray look stunning. Digital air signals come through flawlessly with the same antenna I've been using for a couple of years. As for the viewing angle, I wouldn't say it's 178 degrees though. As long as you're not sitting on the floor to the side or something, you should be fine. The 50,000:1 Dynamic contrast as you know is not the real contrast ratio. That's like the "digital zoom" feature on a camera, totally a sham. However the contrast is just fine with that feature off. Blacks are deep, whites are light. Beautiful.

- LIGHTWEIGHT
I have the 40" version which I can lift myself! (It also fits my TV stand perfectly. I would've opted for the 46", but that would require buying bigger everythings, and because of living in New York, you have to make most efficient use of space).

- THINNESS
It's thin. Which is good and bad. Thin looks great, but now I can't put my center speaker of my surround sound system on top of the TV because it's just too thin and not a flat surface to sit on top. I've had to put it in front of the TV, which is fine. Again, this is not a flaw of the TV itself, I just have to adapt.

- 120hz AUTO MOTION RUBBISH
2 words, total rubbish, or utterly pointless. Sure the example they give you says it can "intelligently calculate a middle image" between 2 images (using a ball from point A to point B as a simple example), but I don't know how *any* TV could *ever* predict motion between 2 complicated set of frames. It looks stupid, it looks unnatural for movies, and I have no idea why this is even on here or a selling point for this TV. If anything, this made me *not* want to get the TV, but thankfully, you can turn this "feature" off. Hurray! Likewise DNIe and the "video enhancement modes" are rubbish for regular people that don't know how to adjust picture quality. Sorry regular people. I turned all these to "off".

- BACKLIGHT
The other "complaint" is the function of backlight. I like that in the menu you can adjust backlight levels manually, but then, they give you an energy saving option that sort of counter-acts that. It makes you wonder if lowering the backlight and turning off power-saving is the same as turning up the backlight and setting power-saving to maximum. Who knows.

- SOUND
It's fine. The built in woofer is a plus. The speakers are loud, I never have it above 20 (out of 100). Not so sure on the TruSurround XT, still seems gimmicky to me, but it doesn't hurt it. Depending on the content, it does sound better with it on. I usually don't care about TV speakers since I have a surround sound system I use instead.

- THE REMOTE
It looks cool. I'm a bit iffy on the scroll wheel. it doesn't really work well if you swirl it around, it's best you just press in the direction you want. The back-lit buttons are a major plus!


I believe I have addressed most things, and most of the things I had concerns with before I bought it. All in all, I'm not really complaining, I like the TV a lot! I don't want to say I love it because it's a material object. I'm glad that Samsung gives you the option of turning most of their features off, and being able to customize a lot. The thing that would make it super perfect would be to add an RGB LED backlight, but that would cost an extra $1000 of course. Oh, and if you live in New York, buy it somewhere else online where they don't charge you that extra 8% for tax. :-)
