I love This TV. The picture just blows me away. The colors are crisp and so accurate. You can see all the detail....hairs out of place on the news anchor people, zits, the flaws that make them finally look like real people. The set is beautiful to look at even when it's turned off. We have it mounted on a stand with a post and bracket that we purchased at Walmart. There are windows across the wall opposite the TV and when the Florida sun shines in during the mornings we have to close the shades as there is some glare. I thought this might be an issue since this model doesn't have the matte screen like the Sony does. But after comparing pictures at the local stores I was sold on the Samsung because the picture is just so much more crystal clear. And it looks great at every angle. It's the best!!!!

source (via HDMI). The only time it will output 5.1 digital (or higher) is from an off-air coax connection. Lame eh? This hasn't hurt me because I can just hook them directly to my sound system, but I was hoping for a smaller cable mess.

Best picture quality hands down. It is very close to plasma TVs so don't get a plasma; they are heavy, dim, and have possible issues of fading (needs recharging) and screen-burn. Most Blurays (and other widescreen movies) don't come to you in a full 16:9 frame, which means there will be letterbox bars. This can damage a plasma screen, but you can leave an LCD on all day.

all range from horrible to slightly less horrible. I have optimum HD dual channel DVR box, which works great hooked up to my 6 year old Sony CRT TV. (HD channels look better on my old sony as well).

2)image blur with fast moving objects on the screen is VERY VISIBLE, and much worse than on my brothers 4 year old LG set. Don't believe the fast 5 ms image refresh. perhaps they get it under lab conditions, but in the real world, almost any fast moving image creates a visible blur. Forget about watching most sports or action movies. While thee blur is faint, it is almost always visible, and once you see it you will keep seeing it. It drives my wife and I nuts. Our first experience watching a movie was the Golden compass on blue ray (though HDMI). The scene where the little girl is riding a bear across the nice blue sky backgroung has approximately 1 cm of faint blur trailing behind her. The large fight scene towards the end of the movie was totally unwatchable due to all the trails. In fact, both from a blu ray source and on many channels, when the actors face moves slightly on the screen or when they talk, a faint blur tends to appear over the entire part of the face that moved.

3) Sound is pretty bad, but if you have a surround sound setup it shouldn't matter.

4) Not really a television problem, but more of a problem with the retailer. I purchased the set through Amazon from 6Avenue electronics, and when I called them to ask for a return, I was denied, saying they NEVER ACCEPT ANY RETURNS ON TVS LARGER THAN 32 INCHES. They referred me to a line buried in their 30 day return policy which stated that it does not apply to large telivisions. They said that once I bought it an accepted delivery it was my problem, and I would have to resolve any issues with the manufacturer. So beware when ordering from them. I guess customer service means nothing and I will never buy from them again. I am now stuck with a television which does not perform to the promised specifications and which I can not return. When I called Samsung, they offered to send a technician to my house, and said they will set me up with a local repair shop. They also said they don't think there is anything wrong with my set. It has been 3 days and no repair tech contacted me yet.

In conclusion, I would not recommend buying this television if you plan on watching sports or action movies on it, or if you don't have a surround sound system. And I especially would not recommend buying anything from 6th Avenue electronics. What a rip off....

Helpful note about Amazon.com: Up to one month after the purchase date, Amazon.com allows for price matching of the current price. The price of this TV dropped over $100 within one month of the purchase. A simple call to Amazon's customer service and I was reimbursed the difference.

I also ordered a Sanus VMPL50B tilt bracket (also from Amazon) to mount the display over my fireplace.
I placed the ordered on a Thursday and the product was delivered the following Thursday. Not bad!

The display was delivered by a shipping company called CEVA Logistics. Two persons carried the large box to the second floor of my condo where my living room is and unpacked the television so that I could make sure that it was in good condition, which was the case.


Installation:

I didn't use the stand provided with the television. Instead, I mounted the display on the wall over my fireplace using a Sanus bracket.
Initially, I was going to use the Sanus VMPL50B but, because of the position of the studs behind the wall, I decided to exchange it for a longer, adjustable one. I picked a Sanus VMPL3B which is basically the same, with the difference that the plate is 10 inches longer, when fully extended.
This way, I was able to mount the bracket using 4 studs instead of just 2 studs if I had gone with the VMPL50B. It gives me a peace of mind and I know that I am not going to find my plasma television broken into pieces anytime soon.
The installation was fairly easy and took about one hour total. My wife helped me carrying the display and securing it on the wall bracket since it is pretty heavy (approximately 80lbs).
The display sits only 2.5 inches from the wall but it was actually hard to tilt because of the HDMI connectors in the back. The problem is that the panel in the back where all the connectors go is not recessed enough. I just wish there was an extra 1/2 inch of space.
What I did is that I purchased a couple of HDMI "right-angle" adapters (from an excellent Internet store called MonoPrice). This way, the HDMI cables run along the back of the plasma set and it is way easier to tilt the display.


Operation and Picture Quality:

I am truly impressed by the TH-50PZ85U. Not only it performs well but it looks great on the wall.
The only connectors I have are HMDI. I have one HDMI cable running from my digital cable box (Time Warner - Scientific Atlanta) to the TV and one HDMI cable coming from my SONY DVP-NS3100ES DVD player (up-converting DVD player, not Blu-Ray).
HD channels are simply outstanding, even in Standard mode. It is such a pleasure for the eyes to watch anything. I surprised myself at watching a full hour of an animal documentary on Discovery HD, even though I have never been a fan of animal TV show.
The level of details is amazing.
Standard cable looks very good too but obviously not as good as HD. My only concern is that currently I only have 22 HD channels (and 3 or 4 of those don't even have regular programming). Time Warner can't beat satellite in my area but I am not ready to switch yet. There are some reports that new HD channels will be added soon so I just need to be patient.


The remote control is easy to use and it can also operate other devices such as a cable box, a DVD player and more. With my configuration, this is pretty much the only remote I use now.

I like the fact that there are some extra video inputs (including HDMI) located on the side of the display. I use them to plug my video camera.
Several settings for the sound can be adjusted as well (balance, treble, bass and some other effects I am not really familiar with yet). Overall, the sound is excellent but when watching a DVD movie, I use my home theater system (I have a 5.1 speaker system with a SONY STR-DA3100ES receiver).
The great thing about HDMI is that it only takes one cable for both video and audio signals. I can always use the TV speakers while playing a DVD or watching a cable program. When I switch to the receiver, all I have to do is mute the sound from the TV.


Note on "break-in" period:

I know there are many forums talking about the 100-hour "break-in" period. There is no mention of it anywhere in the user's manual. So I went on the Panasonic website and I found some info. Basically, for the first 100 hours of operation, it is advised to watch television in Full Mode or Zoom Mode only (to avoid black bars on the side) and to avoid prolonged period of time of static image or channel logo.
Since I had read many threads dealing with playing a "Break-in" DVD, I called Panasonic Technical Support direclty. The person told me that it was not necessary as long as the above rules were followed for the first 100 hours of usage and that it wouldn't make any difference in the end.
SO I watched different shows in Full format mode as well as DVDs. Whenever I would watch a channel with a logo on the bottom-right corner for over 30 minutes, I would use the "Anti-Static Retention" feature for a few minutes (accessible with the remote in the Main Menu). What it does is that it displays a scrolling white bar over a black background.


Bottom Line:

The TH-50PZ85U is an incredible set for the price. I have been reading reviews and comparing with other existings sets (including LCD sets) for the past 6 months almost and I think that, for this size, this is the best option in terms of price and quality.
Panasonic is a reputable manufacturer and no one can go wrong with this display.

Pioneer KURO 60" Class 1080p Flat-Panel Plasma HDTV

to go to the TV first and only send audio to the AV Receiver if I choose to use its 5.1/7.1 sound. Otherwise I like to use the TV's speaker. The issue is I don't want to wake everyone up with the loud sounds if I want to watch something and the family is sleeping. The 6020FD makes this a little easier as the optical output produces audio for everything except "protected" content (whatever that means). I haven't found any on my Blue Ray disks (via PS3). However I wish there were more HDMI ports on the back so I could hook all my (current and future) devices up directly.

Hopefully with the Ethernet port there will be a firmware update so I can access the display from my Apple Macs and maybe the new Amazon media store.

Pioneer has built a nice tuner. However the TV guide is now gone. Unfortunately the tuner is kind of a waste given that there is no point in buying this set unless you'll have HD content from your cable or satellite provider.

So far, I'm very happy.

Now I just have to find a universal remote to control the 6020, Comcast STB/DVR, Mitsubishi DVD player and PS3 (and next an Apple TV).

P.S. The Onkyo SR606 AV Receiver works great with this set.

I dont really notice a difference. I havent heard the sound from the 650 series, but I cant imagine that there is that much difference.

So overall I am pleased with the purchase because all of my requirements were met, but all the 'bells and whistles' came up short. I probably would have been just as happy with 650 series, but amazon had such a great price (low price, free shipping, no tax) on this one I cant really complain. If you are looking to save a few bucks get the 650. I am crossing my fingers that there will be in the near future a firmware update which will resolve the DLNA and RSS feed issues. If this becomes the case I will REALLY be pleased with the TV.

The one thing I really prefer over the 650 is the touch of color on the 750 goes around the entire tv, whereas the 650 only has it on the top and bottom. This is purely aesthetic reason and it can only be seen in a well lit room.

On a side note, CEVA delivered the TV 6 days earlier than the expected arrival date. The TV was ordered on thursday and it was in my house by the next week friday (6 days). I live in california and the TV originated from the east coast.

was so dark and the colors so perfect that it looked like he was sitting across the room talking to us. A friend was with me and his reaction was "Super Bowl at your place!"

No one can deny the black levels and contrast on this TV, and that's what makes watching it so great. If it's completely dark in the room, you can still tell that it's on, but when you've got a widescreen movie on and there are black bars on the top and bottom of the screen, you can barely make out where the screen stops and the bezel begins. Colors benefit from the depth and it creates a 3D image, and you don't miss anything because everything is so clear. This screen makes me want to watch all my Blu-rays over again because you really haven't watched high definition until you've watched it on a Pioneer.

For anyone who is feeling gun-shy, just pull the trigger and don't look back. You will surely be satisfied!!

system, but it's really not that hard to do manually. It records HD signals as SD (standard definition). Of course, to record in HD will require much bigger hard drives.

The listing of programs ("Titles") that you have recorded are clearly shown and easy to navigate to. But it is best to put a rudimentary title on the TV programs right after you record them. Otherwise all you have is the date, time, and channel of the recording. You have to add titles by a clunky texting method, requiring multiple presses of numbers 1-9.

Playback
I use an HDMI cable between this unit and my TV. Playback from the hard disk is a joy. Access is immediate. The unit remembers where you left off watching last time on each program individually. You can manoever around the recordings with an (adjustable) 30-second skip forward/backward button, or with an adjustable-speed fast forward/rewind, or with a chapter-jump ("next") which uses the (optional) 10-minute auto-chapters that are inserted.
Playback from DVD is fine, but loading a DVD is slow (perhaps because it can handle so many different DVD formats).

Aspect Ratio
Fiddling with aspect ratio (4:3 vs. 16:9) is a hassle that we will be dealing with for years. This unit, unfortunately, records digital programs as 4:3, even when they are transmitted as 16:9. Translation: when displayed on a 16:9 widescreen TV, you get black borders at top and bottom AND at the sides. This is satisfactorily fixed by zooming the picture on playback. I found it best to zoom from my Sony TV, as the zoom on this Philips is limited and clunky. You have to cancel the zoom the next time you watch a 4:3 program, however, and you can't see the Philips' "information" display when in zoom mode.

User-friendliness
Most functions are well thought out and the software is good. But you will have to read the manual.
The remote control has the buttons needed, but several important ones are badly laid out. The STOP button is tiny.
Since it's a multifunctional device, you have to tell it what component you want to use. If you have been watching a TV show recorded on HDD, then insert a DVD, if you just press "play", it will resume playback of the HDD unless you press "DVD" first. It's not smart enough to realize you want the DVD now.
The 122-page instruction book is detailed. It is fairly well written. Mine is very well-thumbed and dogeared. To get the most out of this complex unit, you will need to read it carefully.

Editing
For copying from old VHS tapes or home DVD's, I find it best to record first onto the HDD. Then use "deleting a scene" to remove unwanted sections. The software for this is pretty user-friendly. Then transfer the cleaned-up version to DVD. You can in theory record directly to DVD from VHS, and delete unwanted sections on the DVD directly, using "Hiding Chapters" but this is clunky (first you have to define the section as a chapter), and these deletions, and added chapter headings, were ignored when played back on another unit.

Downsides
It can't record HD programs.
It's slow to load a DVD.
The remote buttons are poorly laid out.
Widescreen format shows must be zoomed on playback to fill a 16:9 TV screen.
Titling tracks is tedious.
DVD edits may be ignored in other DVD players.

Summary
This is a really fine and extremely versatile unit, at a bargain price. It is a leapfrog into the digital age. Finally here is a device with the versatility to fully supplant S-VHS VCR's.
The next step will be when this kind of device is upgraded to record HDTV on its hard disk AND to record Blu-Ray DVD's. Don't hold your breath.

-Picture: I have limited knowledge about what is considered "good" but the picture is amazing to me. No screen door effect, the colors are perfect and no issue with blurring.

-Delivery: The white glove service is great I was scheduled for a delivery 2 weeks after purchase. I received it a short 4 days later. My TV was shipped out of PA and I live in MA.

Cons:
-The aspect ratio of the TV for normal SDTV defaults to 16:9, which leaves large blank borders and doesn't use the full screen of the TV. Although you can use the wide fit option under the settings when switching between HDTV and SDTV you have to change back and forth between "wide fit" and the native 16:9. Also when the TV auto adjusts between interlace and progressive you get a green screen for a second that frankly freaked me out the first time it happened.

-I haven't found any others yet with maybe the exception of the lack of 120hz option known as "future proofing". My take on the 120hz thing is its not developed enough to be worth the price difference. Almost every TV including the Samsung's that I have looked at with that feature on had issues with blurring the picture, more specifically during sports games. Many posts state to just turn the 120hz feature off. Leaving them with a xx" TV at 60hz i.e. my TV.

Summary:
Overall I highly recommend this TV for the reasons above and because it is a consumer reports best buy in its class 40-46" TV's. The Anti-Glare is huge for me because I watch it in the living room and have five windows that give us daytime light. The delivery service Amazon uses is efficient and will remove the packaging should you want them to. We held onto our packaging to make sure its the TV we wanted and just threw it away the other day. Finally there is more than enough support for this TV both from Samsung in the form of Customer Service and it's Firmware updates via free USB flash-drive and the AVSForums. Combine all the above with Amazons 30day return/price protection policy and it's win/win.

cable and video card were the same ones that worked fine with the Acer, so those components could be ruled out as causes.

I even used the menu to rename the port to "PC" in the hopes that would automatically modify the port configuration as it does with the 52", but that didn't help either.

Now here's the really strange part: When used as an HDTV (plugged into Comcast cable) the images simply cannot be better. Even without any adjustments the black levels and color saturation is as perfect as anything I have ever seen. When used as an HDTV this set will not disappoint anyone - no matter how "picky" they are. At least this performance shows there may be some hope in someday finding some hidden method to improve its performance when used as a monitor.


There were four other disappointments prospective purchasers should be aware of:

1) I had already downloaded and read the User Guide from the Samsung website a couple of weeks before anyone began selling this model. Upon unpacking the set I noticed the remote control did not match what was listed in the manual - it was a completely different shape and was missing 7 buttons. This seemed strange because some of those missing functions were very useful. I borrowed the remote from my 52" Samsung which was equipped with those buttons (and many more as well). That remote was able to control everything, including the functions that were missing on the supplied remote! I called Samsung support and found that they have recently updated their online user guide and downgraded the supplied remote to the one I received. While you can still access the missing functions by navigating through their menu system, it makes using the remote a frustrating experience. This is a relatively minor complaint since I can use my other remote or buy an expensive third-party remote to get those functions back.

2) Perhaps a bigger disappointment with this unit is its total lack of VESA wall mounting holes. There is no way to wall mount this set unless you use one of those old fashioned shelves they've used for years for CRT sets. This is a pity because the 1080p performance of this set is unequalled by any other HDTV in its' size or cost range. Even if you don't need it as a PC monitor at all, it can be completely justified for purchase solely for its HDTV performance.... but this function almost REQUIRES a capability to be wall mounted, which cannot easily be done wth this set.

3) The speakers on this monitor are average for a typical HDTV - in other words - pretty poor. My first inclination was to connect a simple set of 2.1 computer speakers because even the inexpensive ones provide a huge audio improvement. It is difficult to justify a full-blown receiver and 5.1 or 7.1 sound system for a TV this small. Unfortunately, the only audio out connection on the back is an optical Toslink connector which no computer speaker system I know of is equipped with. I can't even find an adapter to convert the Toslink to any analog type of connector.

I was successful in connecting to the audio-in jack on my computer's sound card via the earphone plug located on the side of the monitor, but it looks pretty cheap to have the wire stick out like that. That appearance is not compatible with one of my main reasons for selecting this item: it's beautiful appearance. Even with a right-angle jack adapter the cable remains visible and the monitor's side door covering the connections must remain open.

4) The biggest disappointment is the lack of "picture-in-picture" (PIP) capability. What could be a more natural use for this set than to be able to use it as a computer monitor while having the nightly news running in a window? The remote shown in the original manual has a button for PIP, even though the manual stated PIP is not available. The remote actually provided does not have a PIP button. I've used my other remote (which does have a PIP button) to confirm, and the set just states "function not available". I feel this is a major design flaw for a set of this type.


Now for the good news:

I really like the crystalline (clear plastic) bezel design and the TOC which matches my 52" Samsung. Just as with the larger TV, the red TOC is actually so subtle that it appears black unless directly illuminated by bright sunlight, when it still appears more of a very dark reddish-brown. The 52" set has a design feature which allows subtle screen illuminations to be reflected off the outer edges of the bezel (dubbed as the "halo effect"). I like that feature and am a bit dissapointed this set has not yet exhibited this effect. (If it does, it must be even more subtle than on its bigger brother).

The on/off button on the bezel is not really a button at all. It's an invisible sensor that activates when you touch a certain spot - just as it does with the 52". Unlike its' larger brother the other contol functions for channel and volume are physical buttons hidden behind the right edge of the bezel. The power indicator light is very cool - instead of a small point of light, it is a faint red glow of a sizeable portion of the corner of the frame - perhaps a 2" crescent region.

I was greatly surprised (and pleased) to discover that after allowing the set to automatically locate and program cable channels that it found perhaps several hundred of them. It picked up lots of HDTV stations without the need for a set-top-box. The best surprise is that it shows standard definition (SD) broadcasts nearly as clearly as the HDTV broadcasts. I have to hit the "Info" key to verify the resolution of many channels because they all look so good. The SD display even surpasses the very good performance from its' 52" big brother! SD stations that are of nearly unwatchable quality on my other HDTVs look great on the T260HD, perhaps even better than they did on my old SD televisions (which I no longer have for comparisons).

Performance on HD material is quite good, but not quite as good as that of the larger Samsung.

SUMMARY:
I cannot recommend this unit for use as a computer monitor. If I ever discover a solution for its poor performance I'll edit that info into this review later.

The display performance as an HDTV is much better than it's performance as a computer monitor, but still not quite as good as I had expected.

No PIP functionality greatly reduces this set's usefulness.

cost. There are many other fine 24" monitors - including Samsungs - that use a different type panel which have more restictive viewing angles and can save you $200 or more. These other monitors will look great when you sit in front of them - they just do not look very good if you are looking from above or from their sides. Evaluate whether you need these wide viewing angles because you are certainly paying for them.

Another Plus: This Samsung offers multiple inputs - far more than is normal. Beyond just a VGA (analog) and a DVI (digital) input - which are the only two possible connections needed to hook up any computor ---- this monitor also offers a multitude of audio/visual connections. For example: I've connected two computors to this monitor plus a Sony Playstation 3. This model of Samsung even offers an HDMI input (the new standard for high definition TV connections) which I'm using for the Playstation. My Playstation connected perfectly over the HDMI input at 1080p and since this monitor allowed me to select 16:9 scaling - I had a perfect picture. If I've lost anyone: the bottom line is this monitor will accomodate any playstation, dvd player or xbox 360 perfectly in addition to a computer. However you are paying dearly for these features and you can get a monitor considerably cheaper if you don't need these extra inputs. In my case - they were a "must have".

Other comments: For a Playstation or XBox you'll need to add speakers. This monitor has an audio out jack (and even a jack to provide +12 volt power to the speakers) but no speakers. Any cheap computor speakers will work. It is shame speakers are not built-in.

Hype: This is certainly a fine display but I have to wonder at some of the other reviews which seem to suggest almost a magical quality to the display. I see a fine display but no better than my 19" (which was highly rated) or my 22" (also top rated). My 19" cost me $200 and my 22" $300. In another review, the writer says he is seeing new colors on this display he had never seen before. I don't. My only conclusion is we upgraded from very different monitors. I see nothing different from my previous monitors but they were of high quality.

Bottom Line: This is just about the most expensive 24" monitor you can find. It is an excellent monitor. Buy it if you need multiple inputs with audio/visual support or you need a very wide viewing angle. Otherwise I believe you can get as good a display for considerably less.

Buzzing (see another reviewer's comments): My monitor is quiet and it seems virtually everyone else who owns this monitor says the same thing.

No issues so far, but I haven't had it more than a month yet. Also, the TV was purchased at a store and not online, though it is cheaper on Amazon.

My advice is to check it out at a store first. It is prefect for me but of course people have different opinions. Usually after I make a big purchase there's a moment of regret or guilt. With this TV, I still feel I made a quality investment and increased my quality of life. There are a lot of variables to buying a TV today so do your research. I would recommend this TV to anyone.
