HP Pavilion tx2510us 12.1" Touch-screen Entertainment Laptop
I personally don't have a problem with Windows Vista and thus can't default the computer as did the previous poster. In fact, I find Windows Vista networking so easy that its a joy to work with compared to that of XP. How hard can it get, I turned this computer on clicked network and there were my other laptop and my desktop all ready to go. Installing a network printer was also a no brainer; I selected network printer, Vista found the two networked printers and installed them both. Everything I want this computer to do it does well and fast. Other models in this line are supposed to run hot but so far this doesn't run that much hotter than any of my other computers. I'd recommend it to anyone that is looking for a small laptop/notebook type computer. I'd also recommend Windows Vista.

ASUS Eee PC 20G (8.9" Screen, 900 MHz Intel Mobile CPU, 1 GB RAM, 20 GB Solid State Drive, Linux Preloaded) Galaxy Black
I can understand why one of the reviewers was disappointed with his Asus eee 900. I got mine at Best Buy for $449.00 and a trimmed down version of Windows XP Home was pre-installed. It cannot handle Vista or a full version of XP and especially XP Pro. I also won't be adding MS Office products. If I need to work on something like that I will use the pre-installed Star Office or Works and save it in the appropriate format. For my needs, surfing the net at starbucks, etc. it will work great. I was also able to install VZAccess Manager and connect to Verizon Broadband with my USB720 modem. It has 3 USB Ports which is great, more than I expected. The speakers work great. Sound better than my Gateway Solo laptop. I used my iPod to transfer files like VZAccess Manager exe to the Asus. I'm on the road and forgot to bring a USB Stick. Also it comes with a nice padded sleeve although the small power supply/cord will not fit in that. A ZDNet review says the battery will last 3+ hours

Microsoft Zune 80GB MP3 Player - Red
I bought it because I dropped my Zen W hard, really hard and broke it and the prices on Zens at that time had doubled. I wanted a player that was compatible with Napster because I love Napster, but there were none in the comparable price range with Zune. When I found out that Zune has it's own subscription service which in theory was just like Napster, I bit.

But it's so unintuitive, slow, regulated, allows me so little choice about how I sort my music, I just bought another Zen. Even though I'll have to redo all my playlists for the second time in just a few months, it's WELL worth it to be rid of the Zune. In the long run, it will save me time and frustration.

The sad truth about this product is that it is typical of the lazy, let's put the least effort into that we can and they'll buy it anyway mentality that Microsoft has had for years. When Word and Excel first came out, they were revolutionary, but aside from some minor cosmetic stuff, despite many expensive upgrades, they

Apple Mac mini 1.83GHz
This weekend I picked up a Mac Mini (with the above mentioned specs..) after doing tons of research and truly looking at my overall needs. Originally my thought was to pick up a Macbook but after focusing on my needs and seeking a cheaper alternative to jumping into the MAC arena I decided to go this route. After being a PC user for many many years the thought of learning a new operating system seemed rather intimidating but having friends who have made the jump made the task seemed a bit less daunting..

I spent many hours perusing You Tube for Mac reviews...everything from Macbook AIR..to PRO..to Macbook and eventually MINI. There's a lot of good informative stuff out there!! Also reading the reviews on this site and many other online reviews I felt I was armed with enough knowledge to finally visit an APPLE store and ask some intelligent questions. Fortunately I ran into 2 young sales guys who knew their product well and tried to be as objective as possible about the product they

ASUS Eee PC 20G (8.9" Screen, 900 MHz Intel Mobile CPU, 1 GB RAM, 20 GB Solid State Drive, Linux Preloaded) Galaxy Black
Even though my Dell 600m is supposed to be "lightweight" at 5 pounds, taking it anywhere was a pain. With other items along, that bag became a real presence and a burden. So it often didn't travel with me.

Not so this little guy. It even comes along on an evening out. I have actually had to check my bag to be sure it is there.

I returned my first 900 20G because the 'E' key was not as responsive and needed a stronger tap. Many errors resulted. Even then I hated sending it back because I was so enjoying it. Quick and easy replacement process with DataViz.

The pros: Portability #1. Also that Linux is so clean and pure. I had never used Linux and was a little worried about adapting to it (I am, er, older), but it is straight forward. I love that it powers down in about 3 or 4 seconds, whereas the 600m takes forever. Similarly it powers up much faster than the 600m. Happy to live without all the 'bloatware' and virus risks. Screen is bright, large enough for my needs. Excellent Internet

Sony 5.0MP Handycam High-Definition Camcorder with 60GB Hard Drive - Silver
Two months ago, I sprang for this much pricier camcorder than I normally would have because we were celebrating my husband's 50th birthday with our first vacation to Europe in 25 years. With the larger hard drive on this camera, it meant I didn't have to drag my laptop along for transferring the video.

In the middle of the trip, I tried to replay the video I had just taken, and I got a screen that read, "HDD format error." Nothing had happened to the camera -- I didn't drop it, there were no extremes of temperature, nothing knocked it. Mistakenly thinking that Sony was a stand-up company and would take care of this, I put the camera away for the rest of the trip and called Sony when I got home.

The news was not good. Sony reports that its warranty covers repairing the camera "to factory standards" but will not even attempt to recover the video.

Instead, Sony's customer relations recommended I try a third party hard drive recovery service. If all of the video is recovered, I will pay

Philips DVDR3576H/37 160GB Hard Drive ATSC DVD Player and Recorder
This excellent unit is truly powerful and capable. It's a real bargain. It combines 3 different functions in one slim package, any one of which alone would have cost more than its sub-$300 price not so long ago: a 160 GB hard disk recorder, an ATSC digital tuner (and an analog NTSC tuner too), and a DVD recorder. Additionally, it breaks the DVD + / - format war by its ability to record on both.

This unit is one of the surprisingly few hard disk-plus-DVD recorder devices available today that has a digital tuner. It eliminates the high cost of monthly charges for a TIVO. No monthly charges at all!

It can do two things at once, allowing playback from either DVD or HDD programs while recording to HDD. It has a fan but it's quiet, and turns off about a minute after turning the unit off.

Recording TV programs
I use a roof antenna, and receive both analog and digital TV signals. Programming to record TV shows is very similar to programming a VCR manually. There is no automatic programming

Western Digital My Book Essential 1TB External USB 2.0 Hard Drive
I bought this hard drive for my XPS 1530, and it has been nothing but problems. 1/2 the time my computer won't find the device, and if it does it loses connectivity with it. I tried the tech support, but they offered no help. The usb won't even work with the drive. I'm sure they're better drives out there. Take the time and find them. You'll be glad you did.

Western Digital My Book Home 1TB External FireWire/USB 2.0/eSATA Hard Drive
I was supposed to buy the other Western Digital 1 TB but accidentally bought this one and it happened just like the others said. Plug it in light comes on but nothing else happens and tried it on multiple computers. I tried it about 100 times determined to get my money's worth and through out all those tries it showed up on the computer exactly 1 time. Convinced that it had started working I dragged a couple files into it (like a minuscule 200 mb... I'm no fool!) and left it alone for like a day and lo and behold the next day the power light was off for some odd reason (computer was still on) and it went back to being dead. I'm upset...This is the type of stuff I'm talking about....don't make no sense. Oh well it's going back to the store where I bought it...cuz that one that I have is Gobbage. Maybe I'll try a 500 gig even though I don't think that's enough.

Western Digital My Book Essential 1TB External USB 2.0 Hard Drive
I just want to write and let the world know what kind of company this is. I have owned 3 Western digital (WD) hard drives. All 3 have not lasted longer then 2 years, the most recent has only lasted 1 yr.. 4 months. But the kicker of this situation is the external hard drive WD make have a warranty of 1 year. but the internal Hard drives that are inside the units have a 3-5 year warranty. So I called WD because the hard drive inside the case went bad. So this is how the call went.
The phone rang, and I got contacted to someone over sea's and could barely speak english. I told him my problem and he said sorry it's out of warranty and there is nothing he could do. So i said the hard drive inside the unit has a 3 year warranty. he said well you bought the external hard drive so you only get a 1 year warranty. I was going no where with him so I asked to speak to a manager.
Mind you it's bad enough I lost all my info, but now I couldn't get a replacement. so the manager comes on

HP Pavilion dv6870us Notebook-Turion 64 TL-64 Gold 15.4
Strengths:
Screen = Large Widescreen 15.4 in; Battery life = Long; Remote control for watching movies; Smart touch-sensitive multimedia controls; Good speakers; Dual audio outputs; Bluetooth and infrared connectivity; Multi-card reader; PRICE = REALLY LOW $600 after $185 rebate at Office Depot!

Weaknesses:
HDD = Small 160 GB; OS = Occupies too much memory Win Vista; USB Ports = 3; Win Vista does not come on a reloadable CD/DVD; No webcam.

After surveying more than 10 medium-sized compact laptops, I have come to the conclusion that this is the best available at this time (June 2008) in its class.
Sony's were a definite No-No because of their cost factor. Gateway, Acer and ASUS were on the other side of the cost spectrum which worried me! I have used 3 DELL laptops till now (and they have all been pretty good), so I wanted to try something else. Toshiba and HP were left to fight it out!

My minimum requirements were:
1. At least 250 GB HDD.
2. At least 2 GB of RAM.
3. At least 15.4 inch

Smart Buy 2133 VIA C7-M ULV 1.2GHz Mini-Note
With all of the coverage about poor Windows Vista performance on conventional (aka more powerful) hardware, it is surprising the anyone would think that an ultra-portable form-factor could run it successfully.

Other ultra-portables from ASUS and others are shipping with far leaner and more stable operating systems like Windows XP or Linux.

I love this form factor, but we're a long way from ever seeing Vista run well on any of the units in this class.

ASUS Eee PC 12G (8.9" Screen, 900 MHz Intel Mobile CPU, 1 GB RAM, 12 GB Solid State Drive, XP Home) Galaxy Black
I wanted this cute PC so badly. The first one I ordered had a loud hum so I had to return it. The second one could not be connected to wireless internet. Customer service at Asus was perfectly nice but not very helpful. Had to return 2 of these. What a disappointment. In this case-- two strikes and they're out!

HP Pavilion Tx2120us Entertainment Notebook PC
HP Pavilion TX2120US 12.1" Laptop (AMD Turion 64 X 2 Dual Core TL-64 Processor, 4 GB RAM, 250 GB Hard Drive, DVD Drive, Vista Premium)

First the negative.

1. Because the HP Pavillion TX2120US comes pre-installed with Windows Vista Home Premium 64 bit operating system this has limited this hardwares ability to run some of the best Tablet PC software out there, such as Education Pak, Ink Desktop 2.0 etc... which are all Microsoft Products. I hope in the near future that Microsoft updates their software to run on their new 64 bit system.

2. Stylus: It's not that the stylus is super cheap but there are other stylus' out there that are definitely higher quality. ;)

3. Sound: Sound isn't horrible but it definitely doesn't deserve to get a "Great" rating either. Fact is anybody buying this tablet should know that the fingerpring reader, the screen, several buttons, the mic, the camera, and the sound all come from the screen which pivots on a very small joint. Which by the way is not cheap

Western Digital My Book Home 1TB External FireWire/USB 2.0/eSATA Hard Drive
This drive automatically spins down when not being used, and there is no way to disable this feature. Unfortunately on my computer under Windows, this means that the drive disappears in "My Computer" and the Disk Management tools if I don't use the drive for extended periods of time. The only way to get the computer to recognize the drive again is to power cycle the drive manually by pushing the power button on the back, it will not automatically "wake up" when I try to use the drive.

Western Digital's only recommendation was that I switch to a slower USB/Firewire connection, as their "button manager" software can keep the drive alive. This feature is not supported on the faster eSATA connection, however. (If that's the case, why did I pay more for an eSATA-capable drive?) At least the company did do an RMA exchange of my drive, just in case it was a problem with the drive or other components, but the replacement had the same issue too. This seems to be a "feature".

Their tech support

Sony 4.0MP Handycam High-Definition Camcorder with 2.7" Widescreen LCD - Silver
I recently bought the TG1 and Sanyo HD1010 and posted a comparison clip on Vimeo.com

Overall, I found the image stabilization to be very good, but the video had muted colors and looked less detailed than that from the Sanyo.

Here are some things I really liked about the camera:
-built in lens cap
-slightly smaller size than Sanyo HD1010
-high quality metal body (titanium)
-matching case (extra cost)
-5.1 audio recording
-memory card plays directly on PS3

Here are thing I didn't like:
-Memory sticks are very expensive compared to SD cards, I found around 4x the cost
-The battery life is rather short, only around 45 minutes (vs 120 min).
-AVCHD are difficult to edit, can not be easily uploaded to Vimeo or Youtube without first editing on the computer. Sanyo's MP4 files can be uploaded directly.
-No in camera editing ability, can not even join or cut parts of clips
-Not able to record at 1080p
-No external mic or headphone jack
-Touchscreen has small buttons
-The menu structure is confusing
-No

Panasonic Digital Camcorder with 60GB Hard Drive and 2.7" Widescreen LCD Monitor - Black/Silver
This was great for our recent vacation. The size is so convenient. We were also interested in automatic adjustment for the sun and it performed wonderfully. We have only used it for a short period but so far it is what we wanted.

JVC Everio Digital Camcorder w/30GB Hard Drive and 2.7" Widescreen Color LCD Monitor - Ruby Red
We purchased this camcorder to take video's of our two little babies to send to family and save for ourselves. It is a great buy! It is so easy to use and small and compact. The picture quality is excellent! The blue color is nice. I would definately recommend to anyone who wants a camcorder for family stuff! So easy with not having to use the discs. Just plug it into your computer and off load like a digital camera.

ASUS Eee PC 20G (8.9" Screen, 900 MHz Intel Mobile CPU, 1 GB RAM, 20 GB Solid State Drive, Linux Preloaded) Galaxy Black
The asus eee is light has enough power for the OS that comes with it. It lacks the required flexibility for hardcore users. There are several online resources to successfully install windows xp or ubuntu.

The hardware is really good in the sense that you get a lot considering the price.

The keyboard is for small sized hands. ofcourse after using it for quite some time, i eventually got used to the size of the keyboard.

HP dv9830us Notebook Computer - Intel Core 2 Duo T5550(1.83GHz) 17.0 4GB Memory 320GB HDD Blu-ray Disc / Super Multi NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GS
After months of research, I bought this computer when the price seemed right ($700), mostly based on its good reviews, because it seemed to incorporate all the features I needed for a semi-replacement to my aging desktop.

I have had several laptops and this rates lowest, despite its sleek look and large screen.

I had hoped the unit would double as a DVD viewer at times, the main reason I went with the 17" screen. However, the sound set at highest volume is not loud enough to be heard from more than about 4 feet away, and even then, the audio quality if poor.

The DVD tray vibrates alarmingly when started and takes a lo-o-o-ong time to load.

The weight does not seem an obstacle in the beginning. That is, until you pack your padded computer bag -- vital especially with such a large screen surface -- with the hefty charger, much less a spare battery. This puts the total weight at about 10 lbs., which should keep your chiropractor busy if you choose to carry it on your shoulder. (Even
