This is a solid laptop with great performance. I too was disappointed with the very dim display when running on battery until I figured out that Dell has set it that way in the system BIOS to persumably extend the battery charge. If you hit the F2 key while the laptop boots up you can enter the Setup and correct this. I moved it from a default setting of 3 to 6 and the display dims only slightly now on battery.
Be careful not to change other settings while in setup unless you know what you're doing. You could cause major problems.

I am pretty amazed at the fact that no one seems to really look at the computer's components before evaluating it. They make a huge difference, both in performance and in price. Even Consumer Reports, which rates the m1330 as a best buy, compares this with a Sony VAIO ultralight that has much better components. Not surprisingly the Sony comes out with a higher score. I think if they were evenly matched this model would blow the Sony VAIO away.
The price for the Dell m1330 advertised here is way high. I got a much better version of the m1330 at Best Buy (x1330 - they use the x instead of the m as part of their own inventory system) in early November for $950. It is going for $1099 now but even at that it is still a good deal.
Here is the comparison of Amazon's version and the BB version side - by side
Intel Core Duo T5750 - BB is T8100
2GB RAM - BB is 4GB which is what is needed to run Vista
160 GB HDD - BB is 320 GB HDD, or twice the storage capacity.
WiFi-g 801.11 - Has this

Though I loved my previous laptop and used it with no complaints since November 2003, I feel like I was a caterpillar and now I'm a butterfly, using my new Toshiba L305D-S5581! Well, okay, I did have a complaint about how long it took my old PC to boot up and shut down, and was thrilled with my new Toshiba's faster accomplishments of those routine operations. I had expected slower instead of faster, due to VISTA and the additional programs which would be on the new laptop. I had XP on my old laptop. I like both versions of MS Windows OS, and can see the advantages of each, but VISTA is definitely the butterfly.
Even though many reviews have made what appear to have been valid complaints about products with the specifications this Toshiba (and other brands) has, I have not had any of those difficulties, and indeed have felt like wings have replaced my previously grounded slow motion.

I purchased this laptop primarily based on the processor/RAM and hard drive specifications. The interface is simple, looks sleek and is not cluttered with too many keys. The screen size and resolution are good. So far the machine seems to deliver as expected.
It is definitely on the heavier side and so handling requires some effort. Amazon advertised the laptop as having a built in webcam, but that is not true. L305-S5902 model does not come with a webcam. There are other laptops in the L305 series that do have that feature but not this one. I am not sure why the webcam was misleadingly advertised especially when this is the only laptop in the L305 series that Amazon is currently offering.
For the price and performance from a reputed company, this is a good purchase.

It's a strong name with a big reputation. I chose to buy a Sony laptop because everything I have ever owned with "Sony" written on it has been solid. This laptop computer is no different. It was easy to setup, connected to my network seamlessley and is a real joy to use everyday. With the exception of having to muddle through the transition to using Windows Vista and especally it's out of the box quirks... which I am over now. I can report that I am now among the those with portability and can slide into the red velvet half booth at starbucks to sip and surf with the other hip urbanites.

I recently bought the 160GB drive and I was disappointed that the instructions in the box were almost not there. It came with a sync software but there was no details on how to use it and when to use it, etc. The product was pretty handy and can fit in a Jeans pocket. It is not very loud. It feels a little flimsy in the hand. For the price, I think it was a good purchase.

So much can be say about Sony's VAIO, but one thing is for sure: it's the perfect companion for working, studying or even for just have some fun on-the-road. I've bought this unit 2 weeks ago, and I couldn't be happier. Its runs smoothly with the 2 Gbytes RAM, the display is bright and clear, the keyboard is very comfortable (the keys are very well spaced), it comes with 4 USB ports (more than enough!) and with a 160-Gbytes hard drive (not too big, but considering it's a laptop you shouldn't keep all your data on it). The design is very stylish (I bought the night-blue model; I'm a blue-freak!). It's elegant and (perhaps the most important thing to consider) it is totally affordable. Honestly, I just can't believe I've got a VAIO for less than 700$!
Windows Vista runs quiet and quickly in this VAIO. Although many people find it annoying, I don't fell offended for all the software trials that come with it. And it takes only about 5 minutes (10 minutes top) to uninstall all of this software.

This is a nice starter computer, but beware, Dell screens are so dim they cannot be read easily in bright light environments. If you want to sit outside and read your e-mail, DO NOT BUY a Dell laptop. I wish I had known this before I bought the Dell XPS 1330, and I would have bought a Sony instead.

There's a poster in our school's "College and Career Center" that reads: "College is not a prize to be won, but a match to be made." I suppose the same goes for computing. The best laptop is not a super-expensive toy to feature, but--again--a match between the user and the product. In this case, the M1330 fit almost perfectly.
When I began my quest for a laptop, I wasn't in the market for some bank-busting dream system that ran at twenty petaflops a second. What I needed was a reasonably sized, reasonably priced machine that could still beat out my old computer: a Dell Dimension 3000 that had begun to show signs of age. After a day or two of searching, I chose this little computer called the Dell M1330: a fast, adjustable machine that featured everything I needed for a decent price.
I'm happy to report that this machine surpassed all of my expectations.
Where I do I start? The cosmetics side, perhaps. I ordered this Dell with a $150 LED screen; it bumped up the price tag, but for a good

I had this for a couple of months and it seemed to be working fine. Then, for some reason, it stopped being a USB2 device. It reverted to 1.1. That means that copying got *SLOW*! My USB ports are all definitely 2.0, and I have all the latest drivers. Other USB2 devices - thumb drives, external HD's and DVD's, etc - all run at USB2 speeds on the same ports. But, whenever I inserted this drive, I got "This device will run faster if you use a high-speed port ...". I tried three separate computers, and got the same result on all of them. I tried ports on the motherboard and on a PCI card. No change.
Tech support was no help. They suggested that I did not have the right drivers, or that the ports were not really 2.0. But I tried other devices, and they worked fine as 2.0. I tried the drive on multiple computers, and it just did not get seen as 2.0.
So, I returned it. Shame. Seems like a nice design, and including the forked cable is a nice touch. If other folks' drives are working,

I decided that it was time for me to back up all of my files and began searching for the perfect external hard drive. I did some research and concluded that this one was the right one for me. I'll admit that one thing that drew me to the SimpleTech hard drive was the color--in bubblegum pink, it matches my Sony laptop.
The previous reviewer is correct; it has a 232 GB capacity. But this is more than enough space for me. I was able to quickly and easily back up my files without having to plug the drive into an external power source. I didn't use the included software...I just dragged my files into the drive.
The drive is much smaller than I expected and extremely portable. I think it's the perfect choice for me.

After reading lots of good reviews for the Dell XPS M1330 (e.g., cnet and pcmag websites among others), I purchased two of them, one for my wife, one for me. The configuration of our laptops is a bit different than the one on this page, and I urge you to custom-configure yours at dell's website rather than buying a pre-configured one (unless you're in too much of a hurry to wait an extra week to get it custom-built to your specs).
We both love the laptops. First, I'll list all the good things, then a few negatives about the laptop, then some negatives about dealing with Dell.
We both got the optional LED display (extra $150). Compared to the standard LCD display, the LED display is brighter, more energy efficient (meaning longer battery life), and makes the computer a couple tenths of an inch thinner and a couple ounces lighter. The LED display is noticeably nicer than the LCD display (which isn't bad, but is certainly not better than the average glossy laptop display). The only

I loved my M1210 and used it for 18 months but recently got an M1330 and I like it even better, except for a few things.
I did like the 12-inch size and weight of the former, but the 1330 is brighter and the keyboard is a little larger, making for improved useability.
BTW, the specs are almost equal: 2.2 GHz processor and 2 Gb. RAM; with NVidia video card.
So the speed is pretty much equal also.
I put 4 Gb RAM into both, and the performance difference is negligible. Don't waste your money: 2 Gb is plenty.
The 9-cell battery of the 1330 is bulky and ugly, compared to the 9-cell of the M1210.
by the way, about batteries: that 9-cell from my M1210 is just about shot, even though the laptop was hardly ever run from only this battery. When using the 1210 mobile, I used the 6-cell almost exclusively; only using the 9-cell when the laptop was running on AC power. Why would that wear out a battery?
The 6-cell from the M1210 is still fine, having been used about 5 hours a week for 18 months.

I've owned many laptops and do computer support for my office, so after going though Sony, HP, and Compaq, I tried my first Dell laptop a couple of years ago - the Lattitude D820 which was a fast, durable, and dependable machine. My only complaint with that computer was its weight - over 6 pounds when you hauled it with the power supply. I was impressed with the fact that in contrast to my other laptops, the battery seemed to last forever and did not lose charging capacity over time. When I went to upgrade, I chose the M1330, sacrificing some screen area (15.4 vs 13.1) and resolution for a more portable package. The design on the 1330 is fantastic! The screen is brilliant and thin with bright LED backlighting. The resolution is perfect for the screen size, the brushed almunium and painted surfaces are crisp and clean. The XPS comes with dedicated and competent Dell support - I had a simple question which was quickly addressed by the support staff at Dell. Other cool features include

All I was looking for was a drive to supplement the minimal storage space on my Toshiba laptop. This worked perfect. I got it on sale at Circuit City for $119, which was a steal. I use it mostly to store MP4 files to load on my iPod Classic. Works great and can play movie files from it through my laptop no problem. Can't speak to the back up software that's included, haven't used it. Only negative thing I can say about it is that the cord has a pigtail USB connector if you need it for extra power, if you have low voltage USB ports. I don't so it just kind of gets in the way. Also, you have to make sure you have the primary USB plugged in to connect the drive, if you plug in only the pigtail, it won't load the drive to your computer. I marked mine so I wouldn't mistake it. That minor thing is really the only thing I can think of negative to say, and it wouldn't be negative if I had low voltage ports and needed it. Overall, I highly recommend it.

I'm confused, most reviewers are slamming this laptop for only having 1GB of RAM when it's clearly stated that it comes with 2GB. Wasup with that? Also they're complaining about it only having 2 USB plugs and not having a multi-format memory card slot. WHAAA! Spend another 10 or 20 bucks for a hub and a peripheral card reader. DON'T WHINE CUZ YOU CAN'T READ THE DESCRIPTION BEFORE YOU BUY... DUH!

I bought a XPS M1330 with a 4 yr service contract. This was my 5th Dell system. I spent three weeks with XPS support trying to get it fixed. I called at least 1 time every day and as many as 3 times a day. Every call lasted over an hour. I talked to XPS Tech Support and customer support. I have over 5 support numbers and yet every time I called I had to start over. They do not retain any information. They told me they would ship me a new part and I should return the bad one. The part they sent me did not work either. Then they sent me a UPS pickup order for the two original bad parts that did not work and the replacement part. I sent them back and got confirmation that Dell did receive the three shipments.
Yesterday I got a bill from Dell and I was shocked to find out that none of the parts I returned were credited on my bill. AND, they even charged me $98.95 for the warranty returned parts. I called billing and was on the phone with them for over an hour before they agreed

First, if you're looking for a laptop with all the bells and whistles, this version of Toshiba's Satellite isn't it. Still, it's a great unit. The screen is amazing. Crystal clear and sharp. Not overly glossy to the point where you can see who's standing behind you. Movies look amazing on it.
You can get by with the 1 gig of ram it comes with, but be prepared for it to be a little sluggish. Still perfectly usable, but if you really want to take advantage of the nature of dual core (i.e. multi-tasking) then you'll want 2 gig. I put 2GB of Kingston, (2 x 1GB) 200-Pin DDR2 667 (PC2 5300), in the system and it has run flawless.
Very nice touch-pad on this unit and the left-right buttons under the touch pad are just right - not too mushy to cause an accidental click and not to stiff that they are annoying. Keyboard is laid out nicely with the "delete" key in the top right corner. Just the way I like it. Movies played perfectly and I was able to burn CD's right out of the box. Vista has a very

I bought this device a month ago to backup my Dell Dimension 4550 and Dell Dimension 4600 systems. Each system recognized this portable hard drive immediately and performed without any problems. As a side note, I only need to use one USB pig-tail on the Y-connector to provide adequate power to the device.
