As always a solid toshiba product. Ignore what the other guy says, you can run XP on this machine, but you will lose some of the features, as with any other Vista based machine.
Value for money, this is a great buy..

It's a strong name with a big reputation. I chose to buy a Sony laptop because everything I have ever owned with "Sony" written on it has been solid. This laptop computer is no different. It was easy to setup, connected to my network seamlessley and is a real joy to use everyday. With the exception of having to muddle through the transition to using Windows Vista and especally it's out of the box quirks... which I am over now. I can report that I am now among the those with portability and can slide into the red velvet half booth at starbucks to sip and surf with the other hip urbanites.

This is a good laptop but don't expect it to brake any speed records. It'g good for general every day use, and light game play. It uses the Pentium 4 Dual Core which is a older technology. The laptop comes with lots of trialware/bloatware. I took mine to OfficeDepot and had them remove the junk and put a year copy of McAfee on my system. If you are buying it for your kid for school this is a good one but they will not really be able to play high end games.

17" screen its big and bright
almost a full size keyboard with keypad
it's quiet - I have other laptops and the fan can get quite noisy
battery life is good I have gotten around 3 hours that is with my screen dim and not using the CD/DVD drive. watching a movie I got a little over a hour.
light - some of my 15.4" laptop is much heavier then this one
160 Gb Hard Drive - more then enough for the average user
Dislikes:
sound the built in speakers are under powered and the volume is low
no HDMI or other HD outputs on it
built in

deceptive advertising/specifications
It was my misfortune to buy one of these lemons. Toshiba does not mention in their ads or specs that it is
built to only run vista. Installing any other operating system will void the warranty. They also don't mention that there is no actual vista disk included, only rescue disks to reinstall vista and the other crapware preinstalled on the hard drive. Over the course of more than two hours, their customer disservice department provided only excuses, evasions an misdirection. At one point, rather than provide information, they transferred my call microsoft. I will never again buy any Toshiba product - Toshiba cannot be trusted.

This is my first laptop after using desktops for years. I did my research and was hesitant to purchase one without any reviews about it. My husband is a Toshiba fan and has had many laptops and gave this one a thumbs up. I believe he is on the money.
Pros:
- 17" screen - great if you're going back and forth from laptop to desktop or other larger montitor; very crisp, colorful, high quality screen.
- full size number keypad on right. As a business owner who does all her own office work, the keypad is something I couldn't live without when using as a laptop; however if connecting to a full size keyboard when not mobile, may not be an issue for you
- efficient, quick machine; looks good too; feels high quality, not cheap like some.
- One year free Toshiba tech support with purchase
Cons:
-size may be an issue for the constantly mobile person. Also, it weighs a little more than smaller laptops - about 10 lbs. total.
-not for the gamer - not enough RAM and storage for serious gamers;

So much can be say about Sony's VAIO, but one thing is for sure: it's the perfect companion for working, studying or even for just have some fun on-the-road. I've bought this unit 2 weeks ago, and I couldn't be happier. Its runs smoothly with the 2 Gbytes RAM, the display is bright and clear, the keyboard is very comfortable (the keys are very well spaced), it comes with 4 USB ports (more than enough!) and with a 160-Gbytes hard drive (not too big, but considering it's a laptop you shouldn't keep all your data on it). The design is very stylish (I bought the night-blue model; I'm a blue-freak!). It's elegant and (perhaps the most important thing to consider) it is totally affordable. Honestly, I just can't believe I've got a VAIO for less than 700$!
Windows Vista runs quiet and quickly in this VAIO. Although many people find it annoying, I don't fell offended for all the software trials that come with it. And it takes only about 5 minutes (10 minutes top) to uninstall all of this software.
