So Far So Good!

Although i've only had this up and running for a few days, it is exactly what i was looking for. The price was perfect, and the 320 gigs were more than my desktop initially came with (200). Using it is a breeze, just basic drag and drop for transfers or save as for new files. Really quite a breeze. I can't say how it'll hold up long term, but so far so good!

Just plug it in

The only thing I needed was the install info from Western Digital that showed me the jumper settings for slave or master.Be sure to use the ones from your old drive as this one didn't have them. I installed the drive and easily installed the operateing system.It really fit my need to get a older PC up and running without spending a fortune on a bigger drive I didn't need.

Product as advertised, delivered on time

I bought this to replace a bad drive in a Buffalo RAID device. I identified which drive was bad, removed the bad one, installed the new drive, and waited for the box to copy information to the new drive. Completely painless.

WD400BB Internal Hard Drive (Refurbished)

I bought 3 of these drives for 3 different computers. They all work just fine though one of them has very loud motor noise / whine. All of them had various dents and dings like someone tossed them in a box, droped them , etc. This did not happen in shipping as they were padded and packed very well. In my opinion these were working pulls from machines that were stripped for disposal or they were from machines being upgraded to larger drives. They aren't pretty so if you are looking for pristine product you'll be disappointed. If you are shopping price and just want a drive that works and gets the job done I think these are an excellent value.

Noisy

Best I can say is it was easy to install, Very noisy like my old one just before it failed. Kept getting the occasional blue screen with check hard ware notification. $10.00 plus to return, might as well not bother.You get what you pay for. . .

Good and Bad

While this drive is great if you want to add a spare drive to your system for backups, etc., you have to remember one thing - if this drive is plugged in and turned on when you press the power button, your system won't boot. I've tried it on four different computers (different manufacturers, BIOS, etc.) and none of them will POST successfully if this drive is connected and on. If you want to use it as a system drive, look elsewhere.

¡mejor imposible!

OEM Pack: no cables, no manual, no software, solo el disco duro en su caja... ¿y que? ...no necesito cables porque mi motherboard trajo de sobra, no necesito manual porque cualquiera puede instalarlo, no necesito software ¿para que? ¡500GB por 75us$ es un ragalo! ¿que si hace ruido? solo se puede oir el ruido a las 5am cuando todo esta muy muy tranquilo, por lo demas el ruido es imperceptible.

Western Digital 640GB Caviar SATA Hard Drive

I build computers as a hobby. Why pay for someone else to build one (one size fits does not fit all) when building your own is not too difficult and you can build with quality parts tailored to your own specific needs. Case in point, the WD 640GB HDD. Large hard drive prices are economical right now. Generally speaking, the larger the drive, the less the cost per gigabyte (GB). At Amazon's prices the WD 640GB drive was about $10 bucks more than the WD Caviar 16 320 GB drive with the same cache. Western Digital has recently color coded their drives: Black (high performance), Blue (mainstream) and Green (no brainer: ecologically friendly-for a hard drive). Where does marketing get these ideas? The Caviar 16 640GB falls into the Blue category. It is amazingly fast and quiet, thanks to its 16 MB cache and 3 Gb/s transfer rate. The technology is interesting in that WD utilized two 320GB platters which gives this drive an edge as compared to say 750 GB drives with similar cache size.  more

Unexpected Results...

I didn't expect this fan to make such a significant difference inside of my Thermaltake Armor case. I had a Zalman 9700 cpu fan and it already kept the CPU temperature cooled. However, my motherboard temperature constantly was at 40-45C idle and creeping higher as load increases. It made me uncomfortable so I had to try a case fan hoping for some kind of help to keep the temperature from rising too fast. I've bought this hard drive fan instead since it fits perfectly into my case and I had enough free slots in front. I also reallocated 1 hard drive to this cage. The results was unexpected. Instantly I experience a drop of 10 degrees celsius and temperature don't rise as fast for my motherboard readings. Below are some results I've gotten:

Temperatures when idle; with their before and after numbers separated with a "/".
CPU: 24-31C / 20-24C
Motherboard: 40-45C / 30-35C

Good Hardrive Poor Support

I purchased this hard drive because mine was failing. I was surprised that the drive came in plastic bag no instructions no installation disk, which is required to transfer data from old drive.

WD Caviar 40 - fast drive, great WD support

My only problem with this drive came when I tried to register it and found it was listed at WD's web site as one sold with a new PC, information that wasn't in the listing.

It's a great drive, fast response, and I installed it myself with zero difficulty, thanks to the copious information available through WD's web site (no paperwork came with the drive).

Value is not that great, since it wasn't new-in-box, and since much bigger drives can be had for not much more money, but this was exactly what I needed for my older PC, at an OK price.

Cool, Quiet and Reliable!

The biggest killer of hard drives is heat. If there is no air flow around the drive, the drive risks certain failure. That said, I have 2 of these running 24/7 in a home-theater PC in a raid-0 array. They are fast and quiet. They have been running continuously for over a year, and no hiccups. 160GB is small by today's standards, but the beauty of this design is that the drive is spinning just one single platter. If you were to go to the 320 GB or larger drive, then you will have multiple platters spinning inside the enclosure, resulting in higher heat and noise.

Replaced 3 in a year. .

I had 3 die in the span of one calendar year. As a teacher, all I do is internet, word processing, Powerpoints and download a little music here & there. Yes, the hard drives were replaced by WD under warranty, but I spent $500 in PC repairs & data recovery in 2007. WD sends you a reconditioned hard drive and not a new one. I will never buy WD again and their QC department should be ashamed of themselves. I recommend Seagate.

Super back-up

I bought this product to back up my hard drive before having to reformat it. The product works flawlessly and is a great value. I will probably buy another one for my other computers.

the only thing i dont like is that overstock.com would not ship to a fpo ap address so i had to send the item home and have my parents send it out here which took about double the time to recieve

WD 500GB Caviar

I got this in desperation when I needed a disc drive for my G5.
It has been months.
Not a hiccup.
It is very fast. Noticeably faster than the stock 160.
And it is very quiet.
It has increased my system speed and gives lots of room for expansion.
I am impressed.

It's a lifesaver

This is a very good external Hard Drive for the money. It is fast and for the most part it is trouble free. The only "problem" I have had is that every so often it does not show up in "my computer." When that happens I just turn the power switch off and then back on and this forces windows to "see it" and it shows back up in "my computer." I have had to reformat my internal hard drives once since I got this external drive. It was a lifesaver because I had backed up all of my pictures and important files on the simpletech. I just used "Drag and Drop" to do my backups and restore also. Very Good external drive. Highly recommended.

Problems setting up as Boot Drive - don't expect any help

Drive seems to work well mechanically, after I bought ($5) another new SATA cable. The problem was that the WD software was not able to create a new boot drive either in Windows or DOS. I was able to copy a boot onto an older small EIDE drive, but not onto this SATA. (?)

Western digital support was absolutely no help - they blamed the problem on Dells software and recommended that I purchase third party software to clone.
Plan on another up to $50 on software to be able to use this drive.

Good External Hard Drive

I needed an external hard drive as my pathetic 80 gig hard drive I'd been using for the past 3 years was bursting at it's seams. So After looking around I saw this model on sale at Best Buy for $95.99, couldn't go wrong there, since it was 320 GIGS, it was a steel. Racing home, I pulled it out of the box, and lets get some things out of the way right now:

1. It has an on/off switch (yeah!)
2. The USB cable is really short. (About 2-3 feet)
3. It has a separate plug for the power supply. (Less drain on your USB).

After straining with the short USB cord, I found a good setup on my desktop. Plugged it into the USB port, and plugged the power cord into the wall. Turned it on, and BAM! 320 Gigs added to the computer. No hassle. It is quiet, and very fast.

I've only run into one small nuisance, it occasionally goes into sleep mode when not being used, and it takes about 6 seconds to start working again when waking up, so lets say it goes to sleep, and then you go to your computer, click on  more

No Problems, Fast Drive

Drive arrived quickly, as usual, and I have had no problems. I have pretty much had this system drive running 24/7 since I received it about a month ago, and have not experienced a single hiccup or problem.

I use it as my single system drive in my new home-built. Drive is fast, quiet and trouble free.
