I purchased this hard drive because mine was failing. I was surprised that the drive came in plastic bag no instructions no installation disk, which is required to transfer data from old drive.

The biggest killer of hard drives is heat. If there is no air flow around the drive, the drive risks certain failure. That said, I have 2 of these running 24/7 in a home-theater PC in a raid-0 array. They are fast and quiet. They have been running continuously for over a year, and no hiccups. 160GB is small by today's standards, but the beauty of this design is that the drive is spinning just one single platter. If you were to go to the 320 GB or larger drive, then you will have multiple platters spinning inside the enclosure, resulting in higher heat and noise.

I had 3 die in the span of one calendar year. As a teacher, all I do is internet, word processing, Powerpoints and download a little music here & there. Yes, the hard drives were replaced by WD under warranty, but I spent $500 in PC repairs & data recovery in 2007. WD sends you a reconditioned hard drive and not a new one. I will never buy WD again and their QC department should be ashamed of themselves. I recommend Seagate.

I bought a WD drive and it failed after 12 months of light use. WD folks told me it must've been something I did. I was backed up, but lost a lot of irreplaceable baby pictures. They wouldn't do anything, as it was after a year. Buy a Hitachi hard drive, these are total junk and could cause you the same heartache they caused me.

The product description says, " Data Lifeguard Tools is a set of software utilities that work in conjunction with the embedded Data Lifeguard features to make hard drive installation, drive management diagnostics, and repair simple and worry-free." However, the drive arrived in a plain box with xeroxed instructions and without any software. The instruction pages were jumbled in the wrong order, with some pages upside down. The OEM box was nowhere to be seen. What makes this "caviar" is left to your imaginaton. It should be labelled the "catfish" edition. Needless to say, I am returning it.

I have an aging win2k pro machine that has the C: drive on an 8 G partitian. The Sims did the computer in - we are constantly struggling with disk space. So, I bought this beauty and downloaded a wonderful utility called Casper (not the demo version, downloads.com). 2 hours after I opened the box, I had the computer booted off the new drive, using an exact copy of the old, but onto 30 G partitions. It went without a hitch! We didn't lose a single application or license key. If I'd known it was so easy, I would have done this a year ago.

The new drive is faster and quieter than the old, and I really like the 3 year warranty. Note that this is a bare drive in a box - not even any extra screws.
