I have been the proud owner of the Panasonic TH-50PZ85U plasma TV set for about a month.
This is my first flat-panel television and I switched from a 27 inch CRT Sony Trinitron.
Pricing, Ordering and Delivery:
I had been monitoring the price of this set ever since it got released earlier this year.
I had many opportunities to look at the set with my own eyes at Best Buy and other retailers but the price from most of these retailers was a little high, when considering that I would need to add sales tax as well as shipping (I found out that the box with the television would never fit in my car!).
So, when I saw the attractive price - with no sales tax - on Amazon, I jumped on it. Also, the free "while glove" delivery was a big plus as I had read too many horror stories about people getting a damaged or broken television and spending way to much time and energy to finally get a replacement.
The price on Amazon was several hundred dollars less than most local retailers.
Ordering was easy.

Set was delivered quickly by Amazon and unpacked, but delivery man could not help lift it up on TV stand (liability problems). After my son helped me lift set to TV - not really all that heavy - the set worked perfectly and the picture with all input sources was beautiful. I used PC Mag web hints on setting up controls for best picture, though I did not thoroughly calibrate it. Screen format options are excellent - help prevent any burn in (though set has built in pixel burn protection, anyway).
Only minor complaint is that this screen shows more room reflections than my previous Samsung DLP rear projector, but I am extremely satisfied with this purchase overall.

I could not be more satisfied with this television. Last year I bought a 42" Vizio LCD for gaming because it was the only 42" I could find under $1000. However, after upgrading my home theater audio with a new receiver/speakers and buying a PS3 to watch Blu-ray movies, I really discovered what a sour piece of hardware my screen was. When you've spent the cash for a new player and bought a bunch of your favorite movies in Blu-ray format, the last thing you want to see is unnatural looking skin tones, lack of detail in dark and bright scenes, and awful video processing and motion blur!
I got fed up and decided to do my homework this time and prepare to spend what it takes to get a true quality display. I read several critical reviews and message boards which directed my attention to the Kuro line of Pioneer plasmas. I finally got a chance to see one at a local A/V store and absolutely fell in love. They had SportsCenter on in HD, doing an interview with Coach K from Duke, and the black backdrop

Picture quality is superb on this plasma TV. The black level is, well, really black... It may not be as good as the Pioneer Kuro series (though I personally can't really see much difference), but definitely better than the Panasonic PZ85U series.
I would highly recommend this TV especially at the price that Amazon is selling at!

This review is coming from somebody who has owned every top-of-the line plasma/lcd HD TV in the past 6 years, including the LED backlit $14,000 Sony Qualia 005. I have owned the PDP-5020fd for exactly 1 week now, and I am in video heaven. I haven't done any major calibrations yet (want to wait at least 100hrs before doing that), but the out-of-the-box video quality is unbelievable. The black levels undoubtedly set a new bench mark, without sacrificing on overall picture quality in terms of contrast, brightness and color fidelity which are all outstanding. I thought my Qualia 005 was amazing, but this Pioneer is something else. I also compared the Pioneer against the latest Panasonic offerings, but there is just no competition. Worth every extra penny if you are a videophile - especially if you like watching movies in a pitch dark environment. You have to strain your eyes to see the black bars on the top and bottom of the screen - something that has always, always bugged my eyes all these

I just plugged it in an hour ago - amazing. I'm upgrading from a 3-year-old 720p NEC 50" plasma. What a difference. My source is Dish HD via HDMI, and PS3. I bought it without even seeing one in person, and I was not disappointed. I haven't tweaked it one bit, just went through the different picture modes. I started with the Herbie Hancock special I had from DISH - black grand piano and white sheet music - the details in the black were as good as I've seen ever, (over 30 years as TV producer/director). The whites got a bit blown out in Dynamic Mode, but switching to Game mode looked incredible. I can't wait to fiddle with it tomorrow. Other impressions:
* No burn in that I can see - freezing on menu for a couple of minutes - nothing...
* Very minimal screen reflections
* With room light on - it truly is black when there is no picture on.
* In a blacked-out room you can see that it's on, (but I haven't tweaked it yet)
* I sat 4 feet away from BlueRay Ratatouille and thought

Very happy customer. Briefly here are my comments:
PROS:
A) Good Price on Amazon
B) Great quality set
C) THX is great quality
D) Very usable set. Controls and menus very well laid out
E) Remote control is best thought out i ever used
F) Sound is very good on this set too
G) Image viewer is good.
H) On screen sound change only lasts 1 second. Just right amount of time of a visual cue.
I) Surround bezel is very classy
J) Set doesn't get too hot (it has fans - but mine never kicks in yet)
K) Colors are very good. Blu Ray is amazing
L) Amazon shipped to me in Carolinas in 4 days. Setup was ok. Set was perfect.
Cons:
A) Light reflection of glass is very strong. Set is great in dark room, but does pick up reflections very easy. You'll find yourself moving lamps around and keeping shades down more that you used to.
B) Most expensive TV i ever bought. But it maybe 3 times bigger that i ever bought before (i love it)

I have had the TH-50PZ85U for several days at this writing. I purchased it based on seeing a live unit, and because of favorable reviews here and on the AudioVisual forum. It is connected to an Onkyo TX-SR606 receiver which also came from Amazon, all with HDMI cables. I have a new Sony DVP-NS77H DVD player, and the upconversion thru the system is outstanding. I see no need for BlueRay until it gets much less expensive. I previously had a Toshiba rear projection HD that only lasted 6 years, so this is my first experience with Plasma. I am completely satisfied. The 50PZ85U does put out some heat, but I had read about this. Setup was okay, I am fairly technical, but I had to read the documentation carefully several times. The forums mention a 100 hr "breakin" time, but I see no mention of this in the Owners Manual. I am treating it carefully in any event. The picture settings published in the forum were right on the mark for my eye, although the out of the box picture wasn't too bad. I purchased

Just got my 5020 last week and this is the best TV that I have seen. I did a lot of research at high end stores and the side by side comparisons with the older 5010 model vs. any other tv (lcd or plasma) wasn't even close. I was looking at the newest Samsung plasmas and LCD's (Toc) but the black levels on the Pioneer really made a big difference. I even asked my 10 year old son to pick the tv with the best picture and he chose the Pioneer. I really wanted to buy the Samsung LCD (Toc) but couldn't get myself to do it knowing the Pioneer's picture was better. I think I would have regretted it later.
The 5020 is thinner than the 5010 and has the newest HDMI 1.3a inputs. I hooked this TV to a brand new Onkyo 606 which is HDMI 1.3a compliant, Time Warner DVR, and a PS3. All I needed was 3 HDMI cables for the entire system.
This TV has the best black levels i have seen which makes the colors really pop and gives more depth to the picture. The TV makes the high def content more 3 dimensional.

I always wanted a HDTV, and I decided on this model by reading the reviews from other people who have purchased it. I could not believe that plasma TVs are a lot less than LCDs especially that I can get a 42" for less than a $1000 compared to a 32" LCD for the same price.
I ordered this TV on Friday 6/20/08, and it shipped on 6/23/08 to Ceva Logistics in Reno. Amazon said it would be delivered by 7/2/08, but on Ceva's website, using the tracking number, they said it would be here on 6/27/08. I waited patiently for the phone call from Ceva, and someone called me that Thursday evening with a delivery window from 8 am to 12 pm. I was very excited that I would be getting my TV to play with on the following day. The delivery guys came to my apartment at 8:20 am, opened the box for me, and placed the TV on my entertainment center. I hooked up the coax cable from my cable box, and I was blown away by the color and the size of the screen. The delivery guys from Ceva were great for being

Panasonic Viera TH-50PZ800U 50-Inch 1080p Plasma HDTV
June 28, 2008
Owned for 45 days
PICTURE QUALITY
I can not say anything negative about the picture quality... it's a ten for today's technology.
SOUND
I dealt with a Panasonic rep when I made a deal on the 800U and he indicated that the sound was superior to the PH-50PX60U I already had... yeah, it's a tad better but not by much. My 14 year old Sony KV-27HFR tuber still blows them away in sound. But I guess most people don't use their flat panel TV for sound like I do... this ones in the bedroom and I don't have an audio system hooked up to it.
BEAUTY
The cabinet is nice... much nicer than I expected. It's got that sheet of glass front rather than several inches of bezel protruding around the glass that most flat panel TVs have nowadays. There is maybe a 1/4 inch low-profile black bezel around the glass front... very new looking. There is still a 3-inch bezel surrounding the picture tube (if that's what they still call them) - but

After scouting for a LCD for about 3 months and wating july 4 sales i settled on to this TV. We went to almost every store to decide the LCD. Zeroed on Samsung 42A550 1080i, thats when we saw this TV. We played this TV along side the other TV's. Absolute winner for the price. LCD appears to be bright and crisp due the environment in stores, this one has more natural colors and superb contrast. we went to FRY's where there was a little lobby kinda place which matched our room lighting. We have a wide (about 5feet) window 2ft beside the TV unit I always thought LCD is best. The store guys were good enough to move the TV and play it for us. Hooked up a Samsung DVD player with HDMI , Lo the LCD was like a flourescent tube light, this one was like a real world window with pleasing colors, I took with me two ICE AGE 2 DVD, We played this DVD in all 3 models we Zeroed on Samsung A550 and 650 and there very little difference, having seen so many models and reading scores of review about different

I'm not a TV expert. I bought this TV because it has many good reviews and I am
very happy with this purchase so far.
I only want to emphasize that my purchase from Amazon has been very pleasant.
My delivery was slightly faster than estimated. It was part of the deal that they
delivered and set up the TV, let you examine the TV, made sure the TV work
before they left. If you noticed something wrong with the TV, you could refuse the
shipment.
Amazon is also very good with post price match policy. I noticed that this TV had
a lower price within 30 days of my purchase, so I let the customer service know
and they gave me the refund of the difference with no hassle. I don't know
any other online retailers who do this !.

Look, I have had a lot of HDTV's and like other reviewers I veered away from the plasmas because of Burn-In concerns and the like. I have had this TV for about a month and have enjoyed nothing but pleasure from it. The blacks are some of the deepest I have ever witnessed on a TV. I think this TV could truly give the Pioneer Kuro a run for it's money. I looked at the Panny's too and I was unimpressed when I saw the 650 next to it.
If you are in the market for a TV that will be a centerpiece of your AV room and display a picture worthy of the HD signal with which you will power it then look no further. This TV is spectacular.

This TV is wonderful. The picture quality is out of this world. The color is super clear and bright. Buy this TV if you want top-end quality for not a top end price

I had a few reservations like others who have reviewed this product, but after having it in my home for a week, I am completely sold on this remarkable TV. All inputs for this television are in the set top box that broadcasts the video signal, the only cord you need to attach to the television is the power cord. The picture is stunning in HD and almost as great with digital and analog broadcasts. There are enough user settings built-in to satisfy demanding videophiles and still easy enough to use for your average technophobe. Works like a champ with all my other A/V equipment, too. I can't see any degradation in the picture due to the wireless connection. In comparing televisions in retail outlets this Samsung had a better picture than almost any other set available right now. My reservations about getting something so advanced have been completely laid to rest. This is the way television was meant to be. It cost a little more than what I planned to spend when I started looking,

I was one of the folks who jumped on the "pre-order" sale back in early spring, before Panny was actually shipping product. I had narrowly missed the amazing Panasonic Plasma/Blu-Ray deal a few weeks earlier, so I was determined not to miss out. As soon as I saw the price I jumped.
First things first: as many others have reported it was not until late May before Amazon received units from Panasonic. Nonethless, I am happy to report that after "confirming" my order and agreeing to the slight delay, I was surprised in early June with a shipping notice. My unit arrived within a week - well ahead of estimated schedule.
The delivery itself was fantastic. A very pleasant young lady called me one evening to schedule delivery. I picked the day I wanted and she told me it would arrive between 10 and 2. They called me about 30 minutes out and arrived right in the middle of their delivery window at about noon. After a quick check for damage I was assembling the pedestal stand. I can't recommend

UPDATE: (@~250 hours) Just in case you don't jump to Samsung to -confirm- the specs, Amazon is incorrectly listing this set as having 1365x768 resolution. Only the 50" model has -1360- (not 1365) resolution. I looked originally because of the VGA-DSub connector that the Panny didn't have, as well as believing (and Not checking) the resolution specs to serve that PC. Be sure to check the 50" reviews as well, the sets are nearly identical, and the 50" received Best Value and Best Sound from CR HDTV showdown. -end update-
This is copied from my comments on AVSForum, addressing user issues that have been identified with the Samsung 450 plasmas (ota=Over the Air broadcasts):
I am ~45, somewhat farsighted but uncorrected, ear destroyed by engineering audio for a few years and general love of metallica.
Expanding on the title - I was pretty sure there would be a loss in PQ, going with a set so much cheaper than the panasonic (80u), I am happy to report the opposite is true - I like it better.

I could not be happier with my TV and the total buying experience from Amazon. It is rare when I get a chance to say, "Everything worked perfectly"! The TV arrived 3 days earlier than the original delivery date. I received a call from CEVA to schedule the delivery for the next day and they showed up right on time. The picture and colors on the TV are fantastic and the sound is great when run through a surround system

We purchased this TV and received it last week on 6/11/2008. After calibrating it and getting all my systems hooked up to it, it is just beautiful and flawless. It looks amazing too! I use it for my PS3 (Blu-ray too!), Xbox, Wii, N64, and Dreamcast. It does an amazing job making everything look great. I had two struggles getting this TV:
1. Burn in fear - But after much research I have found there isnt much to be afraid of with this TV. It comes with anti burn in technology and from everything I have read this is a non issue with the newer TV's and can be totally avoided with care (in other words just dont have 20 hour marathons of Metal Gear).
2. 1080p vs. 720p - I really struggled with this debate. I did a lot of reading, talking with friends, and checking with experts. Long story short...it really doesnt make much of a difference. It makes a tiny difference but that is only on a few medias and even once it is on all media's it really wont make that much of a difference. It
