I'd like to give this 4.5 stars...I can't give 5, and 4 is too low, but amazon only limits this to whole stars, so 4 it is.
Got this item at a steal of a price from a local retailer who was desperate for business. That aside, I had done plenty of research prior to purchasing and after a week, I can say I have no "buyer's remorse" for jumping on a TV at a great price. We've been looking to upgrade our old 27" zenith tube and the choice has been between this set and the 50" Panasonic PZ85U. Finally getting the opportunity to see these side by side in the store was where I made my final decision. I thought the Samsung looked a little more natural than the Panasonic as I come from a photography background. The Panasonic just looks a little too warm for my taste next to this set. Now...I'm sure neither one of the sets were calibrated at the store, and honestly, I don't think anyone can go wrong with either of these TVs...both produce an exceptional picture, but I liked the A650 over the

For those that, like me, want to hook up a PC to this TV, note that while it has a DB15 input, you can only use that for 1024x768 output - which is a 5:4 screen ratio, so on the widescreen, everything gets flattened a little bit, and while the TV allows you some options for zooming in on, say, component input-video sources, it doesn't allow this for the DB15 input. I thought this was a bit of an oversight by Samsung since it is a 720P widescreen, so a native resolution of 1280x720 would make more sense.
However, If your video card has a DVI output you can buy a DVI-to-HDMI adapter (as cheap as $6 some places), and connect that to the TV using a plain HDMI cable. Using this method my PC (using an nVidia 7900 GS card) allowed me to output plain 720P output to the TV, that the video drivers allow output to be manipulated many ways. The best configuration was setting it to just plain "720P" output and setting the Samsung TV to "Just Scan" (as opposed to "16:9") - sounds goofy, yes, but this

We just purchased this Samsung 42" 720p HDTV today; it is our first HDTV. While I will leave the technical talk to those best suited for such commentary, I can say that we are extraordinarily pleased. After waiting a couple years to buy an HDTV, following various models and prices, we finally pounced on this product when the price dipped down to $750. For our apartment, the 42" is almost too big- it's certainly far more tv than we are accustomed to and for those jumping from CRT's to this, there will certainly be a "Wow!" moment. The picture is just great, though we are leaving the settings on low brightness/contrast for the first 100 hours as several sites recommend (though the risk of imagine burn-in seems to be quite low for these newer models). Set up was very easy. I do recommend having this shipped to you "white glove" service as the tv is 67 lbs and somewhat unwielding. I purchased a Samsung 650 Plasma and was amazed.. Understand, I didn't trust the internet purchase and was not sure if this was really the product I wanted. (LCD vs Plasma) No doubt the right decision. Process was safe with Amazon and the delivery Company was great.. The delivery company called to confirm the delivery, respectfully conversed with us, and pulled the TV out of the box, placed it on the table and showed me it was working as planned. Asked if I wanted the box or they would hold it for me. More about the the 650. Did I say WOW... I just wanted a tv I would be happy with and not regret my decision. LCD vs Plasma.. Tough decision. My co worker does this for a living and talked me out of a LCD ..Great move..Distance from the TV is 8- 18 feet. Love watching Football and Hockey. Great angle viewing and glare is not there. (I get alot of sunlight in the room) Sound is of good quality.

I have now had a month to view this TV and I must say I have no complaints. First, the delivery was flawless. The shipping company was on time, unpacked the TV, placed it on my stand and even took away the packaging. The viewing experience has to be experienced to be believed. I have an extensive DVD collection and also a smaller Blu Ray collection so I tried a good sample of both to get a feel for the quality of the display.
The Blu Ray disks are absolutely gorgeous. The Blue Planet disk showed the blue color as well as my old Sony. I always thought that Sony did the best job with color accuracy especially the blues but I must say this set matched Sony if not exceeded it.
I am very pleased with this plasma especially considering the reasonable price.

I looked for around 6 months for a new HDTV to replace a Sony XBR1 40" I've had for several years. After spending way to much time reading CNETs reviews, I settled upon this TV.
The performance is excellent. It certainly has better image quality than my Sony LCD, both when watching movies (due to the excellent contrast), and when watching fast moving basketball, in which my sony LCD would occasionally have motion artifacts. I think much of the LCD motion artifact thing has gone away with high end LCDs these days.
If you are a video nut that wants to change every aspect of the settings, you need to get the elite model, which is basically the same TV, but with all the settings opened up. You only get basic settings with this model. However, it has a mode that I personally like called "Optimum", where the TVs sensors detect what type of picture is being displayed along with the ambient room conditions and adjust accordingly. Pros: Good picture, lots of inputs. Works well with my PC (DVI to HDMI cable). Cons: Gets a little hot. Menu kinda sucks. When you turn on the TV it doesn't go to the active input. You have to scroll with the remote everytime. Sound is ok, but i never expect too much from TV speakers. For the price this is a better choice than a Panasonic, imo. I've had it for 3 months now. Amazon white glove delivery was great.

Ive had this tv for a couple of weeks now and I am extremly satisfied. The color is amazing, and the blacks are deep and rich. And for the price you wont find anything comparable. I did a lot of research before this purchase and everything I read pointed me towards this tv. CNET.com is a great site to do your research on. If your concerned about the red tint on the border of the tv, dont be. It doesnt light up or anything (I thought it did) and it is hardly noticeable. Dont let that sway you one way or another.
The price on amazon is, as usual one of the cheapest around. There was one other site that was less expensive but I never dealt with that web site before and shipping was extra. I have had ours since July of this year, I have a bunch of kids & was leary of the track record of some of these other manufacturers, in regards to warranty assistance SHOULD the need arrive!
I tried (I repaeat TRIED!!) to contact several manufacturer's that were in the running for my consideration, in regards to their warranties, WHO, WHERE HOW...etc would I send/take my humongous plasma to?
I am VERY rural (in the hills of TN!) MOST of them required I SHIP it to them!Do you know how big those boxes are that they come in? & the logistics of repacking it.........NOPE! "It aint a-happenin'!"
Anyhow.... after MUCH deliberation & research I went with Panasonic (as their warranty is into your home should you need a repair, WOW!! :-)
I bought this an older model with GREAT comsumer reviews,& a good value as the newermodels come out the price continues to fall! I have been EXTREMELY pleased, & nothings happened so far to need any warranty work! The TV is crisp & clear, plays beautiful

I purchased the Samsung PN42A450 42in Plasma a couple of months ago. I couldn't be happier. Did a lot of reseach and looked at the reviews on Amazon. Has an excellent picture, easy to adjust and makes watching HD a completely new experience. Went with the 720p vs the 1080 and can't tell the difference. I am not a real technical person so the reviews with all the details helped. I would recommend shopping in the stores to see the picture first then when you have made your decision compare the stores and on line.

This TV has been very good so far. I hooked it up to my surround sound and other than the sometimes annoying backwards feel of the remote nothing has been less than excellent. The picture is great and the TV is so good that it even almost completely unscrambles the channels on my cable that I would otherwise have to pay for. All in all, great TV for the price at the time that I bought it (sept. '08).

I went in shopping for a 58in Panasonic or 60in Pioneer plasma with a $3000-4000 budget that I'd keep for at least five years like our last tv. While comparing how the picture quality in person looked, the price of this 50in Panasonic TH-50PX80U caught my eye at $1300. Sure it's 720p, but we're at least another year or two out for content in 1080p to be more available especially via cable. I already had a bunch of non blue-ray dvd's and I simply didn't value the improvement that blue-ray dvd's offer to either buy or even rent them. Yes, the blacks looked better on the Pioneer, but only when you're comparing side by side.
I almost still went for the newest 58in Panasonic just because the exterior design is a lot slicker with it's large continuous flat surface. However, when Amazon randomly dropped the price to just below $1000 with free shipping, I couldn't resist. Combined with the $250 in Amazon certificates I already had, I got an awesome 50in Panasonic plasma for $750.

This is my 3rd flat panel tv, and by far the best in terms of picture clarity and features.
I have no complaints. The picture is vivid, crisp, and satisfying.
There are plenty of hdmi, component, and other inputs so no worries there. And they all work, unlike my westinghouse unit. The unit was easy to assemble (4 screws to the base) the online menus are easy to use, and the price here at amazon was better than at any store. Free delivery and no sales tax were a bonus.
I don't use blueray discs so 720p is fine. The $400 premium for 1080p wasn't worth it to me.
Hint: Use a premium credit card that doubles the warranty from 1 year to 2. Panasonic warranty service is in-home or mail in, your choice.

I agree with the other positive comments. I really like the 45.2 width. No other 50" TV can fit into a space that narrow. Price, picture, controls, lack of sports motion blur, light weight, energy savings, deep blacks, etc. are all as good as it gets. I am not worried about the bulb blowing after warranty. I've seen them online for $120 delivered and changing them is explained in the manual. A slight minus is that it apparently doesn't play PAL DVD discs native. You will have to get a DVD player that does the PAL to NTSC conversion. More seriously, if you need to view the TV with your head above or below the screen or more than 45 degrees off center, you should not buy this or any other DLP model. Also, it is not wall mountable.

I teach film and wanted something that would enhance my viewing experience without overwhelming my medium sized, 14 wide by 20 living area. This TV is perfect and the sound, unlike some of the smaller Samsungs, is very good. While not the theatrical surround sound experience, the down facing speakers work well and produce realistic tones whether you are listening to voice or music. They also allow for a clean appearance which is further enhanced by the touch of red screen. If you are not the techie type and cringe at hooking up one more wire or don't want to lay out another $500 on sound, you should be quite happy with this set just the way it is.
My couch is about 12 feet from the screen, while the arm chairs go as close as 6. I find this distance just about perfect for watching the 50 inch screen. I've even had a few friends comment that they almost felt dizzy watching large, fast moving, objects on the screen. If you are wondering how big to go, I personally don't think paying $$$

I considered not getting a plasma since the great room we have has plenty of ambient light; however, it has not been a distracting prolem for us and the TV is bright enough to compensate. Samsung did a good job with the new filter bright technology. If we were watching a dark movie during the day, it would probably be a more noticeable issue, but not a deal breaker for us. One thing to consider is that our TV does not have a window directly opposite from it, but rather the windows are to the side. I got the TV because I did not want any issue at all while watching sports and I am completely satisfied. I have not had any problems with getting the picture adjusted and used the suggested settings on the Buyer's Plasma Guide website. Don't be intimidated to buy from Amazon, they are a fantastic online retailer.

I recently returned this tv. The picture is absolutely stunning, but the tv loses signal with the wireless base unit once every hour or so. I had the samsung tech come and work on the base unit. He replaced some part in it, but even that did not solve the problem. A great tv if it works, but unfortunately mine did not.

I bought this TV about two weeks ago... I was originally looking for a Sony LCD Bravia 40" 1080HD (W300 Series) or the Samsung PN50A550 (50" Plasma 1080p/i resolution).
I went to a local store and saw this TV lying between the models described above - I thought it was a 1080 TV... image quality was about the same. It has better color and sharpness than the Sony LCD, and as in all TVs, it has a slight advantage over the bigger Samsung Plasma despite its 720p versus 1080p so called "disadvantage".
Then came the issue of pricing and looks... this one is a looker and for around $900 bucks it is a steal. Something told me to buy it and so I did.

Next day I took it to a friends house who has digital cable and lord behold - Digital Cable is 720P so there is no real use for a 1080 Tuner - Image quality was great.

After doing countless hours of research on the best TVs, LCD or Plasma, Pioneer or Panasonic, I came to the conclusion that Pioneer Plasmas are the best. And then after reading countless reviews on how amazing this TV is I finally decided to get one. It was definitely a hefty price tag, but from what I read, it was well worth it. After watching a couple blu-ray movies from my PS3 and playing Oblivion it simply did not meet my expectations. Granted my expectations were extremely high after reading the reviews. I had upgraded from a 42" LG LCD and the difference was just not worth the price tag. It is definitely better. I love this TV but I guess i was just setting my expectations too high. I guess I simply wanted the images to pop out of the TV. And I don't know, maybe I'm doing something wrong. Maybe my settings are wrong, or the calibration, but it's just not what I thought it was gonne be. If you have the $3k-$4k to drop on a TV, by all means, drop it on this one. But if you

We researched HDTV options before choosing Panasonic. This model offers superb quality and lots of great features. You can read about them elsewhere. I'll make only two observations:
- I originally planned to purchase from a local Best Buy. The customer service there was awful, so I came over to Amazon. Amazon's price, selection, delivery and set up were all wonderful. I will never consider Best Buy again.
- Amazon also had (by far) the best deal on HDMI cables. I purchased Monster cables from Amazon for $49 that Best Buy (shamelessly) retails for $139.
Bottom line: the TV is great, and so is Amazon!
