Canon PowerShot 8.0-Megapixel Digital Camera - Black

this camera because of the shutter and aperture priority settings; I like to make my own settings on occasion. Most of the compact digitals out there now no longer allow that. But it still has enough presets for those who don't want to fiddle...full auto, easy, program, portrait, landscape, night snapshot, kids & pets, indoor, sunset, and video. Since I haven't taken any video with it yet, I can't comment on that feature. The view screen doesn't have as many pixels as some of the other compact digitals. So if you compare what you see on the view screen with those having more pixels, it won't be as sharp and clear. But don't think that will take away from the actual finished photo...it doesn't. The view screen image on most digitals is very hard or next to impossible to see in bright sunlight. That's why this camera is great. It has a viewfinder; something else one doesn't see much any more. It may seem a bit old-fashioned, but when the sun is at your back and you're trying to frame your subject, and the view screen becomes useless, you'll be very glad you have a viewfinder. All in all, a great little camera; well worth the money. I absolutely recommend this camera. I've heard a rumor that Canon has discontinued this model, so get one while you still can.

using raw files more transparent under the Windows umbrella. Simply put, the operating system does the format transcoding rather than the application. So much for scratching your head wondering about application support. This is a sweet bonus for amateur photographers trying to go the extra distance in achieving quality photographs. For NEF format and Nikon Capture junkies (Raw Processing Software) no worries. With all the dollars sunk into Capture software Nikon is not going to abandon NEF format anytime soon. Not as long as it remains a bankable money cow at least.

Of note, the P6000 utilizes a 1/1.7-inch 13.5-megapixel CCD that supports sensitivities up to ISO 3200 at full resolution. A 4x 28-112mm optically stabilized lens does an all around sweet job. The well lit, wide view 2.7-inch LCD is standard. Taking a page from its family of DSLRs Nikon incorporates the Picture Control settings feature. Manual and semi PASM shooting modes remain the same.

The onboard GPS worked well with no hiccups and is a sweet addition for allowing the user to immediately id shooting locations. Unlike the slow, sluggish feel in between shots that I encountered with the Coolpix P5100, the P6000 operated smoothly in transition. As with all new digital cameras it comes down to memory card speed and quality batteries. I highly recommend SDHC cards and rechargeable batteries.

Overall, I remain quite impressed with the P6000 and would recommend it to point and shoot users that want a little more without going into the DSLR realm.

Finally, the auto white balance is right on... I am so used to doing an auto WB fix first thing in the software... didn't have to with any of the shots I took!!! I am going on a kayaking vacation soon and can't wait to use this gem of a camera!

Canon EOS 50D 15-Megapixel Digital SLR with 18-200IS Lens Kit

all you want, but the end result is a 7.5 megapixel image (or even less) - what kind of progress is that?

2. Gigantic RAW files. If you shoot JPEGs, don't bother. I shoot RAW almost exclusively and with 50D the RAW files are on average 20-30MB. They will fill up an average size hard drive in no time. A typical photo shoot, say a soccer game, will require 2-3 standard capacity DVDs to archive. Of course, now there is sRAW support, but even though picture size is halved, the files themselves are not much smaller. And then again, you paid for 15MP camera, right? If Canon intended to use full 15MP for, umm, "landscape photography", then you will probably be better off by carrying one of those 14MP point-and-shoots for such occasions. And don't think that upgrading your hard drive and buying a drum of DVDs will set you up... RAW files now take 2-3 times longer to process (at least in Canon's DPP), so a whole new computer might be in order. It woudn't be an issue, if the image quality were superior, but it is in fact worse.

3. Little to no improvement in auto-focus performance. Again, if you mostly shoot buildings and trees and posing brides amd grooms, never mind. Even birds are palatable. For action/sports photography, wiggly children, difficult scenes with complex foreground-background mix, the results will be no better than with any prior Canon, which is to say you'll be lucky if your keeper rate is above 50% (or if you don't mind an occasional blur, after all, with 15MP one can downsample that much more :))

4. No improvement in metering system and still no proper implementation of Auto ISO selection. It's 2008, but you are still getting the same (read: unreliable) functionality as back in 2000. Enough said.

To conclude: I wouldn't be harping too much - after all, as I mentioned there is no perfect DSLR bodies, and eventually one learns to live with their limitations - but the turn Canon took with 50D is just deplorable. There is simply no use case for 15MP cropped sensor DSLR. I could already print near poster size prints from XSi files. For web publishing, you really need 6-8MP tops. The areas that needed improvement remain the same as they were years ago. In the meantime the competition keeps marching forward. All you get with 50D is a nicer LCD and more megapixels that you will ever need or be able to handle. Put the megapixel count aside, and quite simply, 50D is lagging behind much of the competition. If you do not have a large investment in Canon lenses, you will really be better off looking elsewhere.

rate practically gave me video of the waves crashing into the shore when you view the photos in rapid succession. This camera was a lot of fun...it makes you want to do more because it can.

Feel free to check out some of my photos in the customer images page. I do not have the technical knowledge or skills of some of the other reviewers which seems to be an advantage to me. This seems like it will be a great camera to continue to develop my skills with.

I have been very pleased with my purchase and I am confident anyone else would be too.

is as particular about a clean LCD display as I am, it might not be an annoyance. Perhaps Canon could consider moving the LCD display to the right side vs the left in later models.

Another significant upgrade is the better image quality versus my former 10D. The images are now taken at 15.5 mega pixels versus the 6.3 of my former 10D. This alone made my purchase a worthwhile upgrade from the 10D.

I have also noticed a noticeable difference with the 50D to capture a bit sharper images in low or available light situations. While the difference I have noticed is not always a sure thing in every situation, it is noticeable enough that it can often mean the difference between a "keeper" and a deletion. Fuzzy images in low light was a major issue with my former 10D. The sensors in the 50D appear to have been improved markedly.

While the Canon EOS 50D can certainly over-kill for a novice or a point-and-shoot photographer, it does meet all of the quality standards and versatility requirements that I require as an advanced photographer. Whether used fully automatic or manually, this camera has all the technology I need to keep it from becoming a technical drag on my creativity. I consider myself an artist with a camera, not a technician. So, once I learn most of the camera's features, I make the camera work for me, not against me. That's everything a Twenty-First Century digital camera should be. And, the Canon EOS 10D certainly is.

While the Canon EOS 50D is not a radical upgrade over more recent Canon digital SLRs, it is for my former 10D. Therefore, I am delighted with my new 50D and would readily recommend it as a quality new or replacement digital camera for any serious photographer.

Canon Powershot 14.7-Megapixel Digital Camera - Black

and control of flash output for sync-sun shooting are all easily at hand. There are even two custom settings that allow you to pre-program the features you'll need for special applications. I use one which sets the shutter speed at shutter priority at 1/1000 sec. and the focus pre-set at infinity for air to ground photography. I use a the second custom setting with the shutter priority set at 1/100 sec for taking photos that include the spinning propeller. High shutter speeds freeze the prop making it look as if the engine has stopped. I programmed it so it also kicks in the neutral density filter and again the focus set at infinity.

Frankly, the results from the G10 are so good, that if I didn't have such a large investment in another brand of Digital SLR lenses, I would switch to Canon SLR's because of the G10. It's always the lenses, not the bodies that keep you with a particular brand of camera.

I could go on and on telling you how wonderful the G10 is and how much it's like a digital Leica, but I think you already get the idea. Just go buy one!

keep upgrading for more features. The quality keeps going up and the price keeps going down. Gotta love it. This camera has a very sturdy, solid feel and looks like a real camera. It sips batteries. I've had it for over a week and have used it a lot just getting accustomed to the multitude of features and I'm still on the Panasonic Alkaline batteries that came with it! I have a fresly charged set of Energizer NIMH batteries ready to go when the original ones wear down. I may have to recharge the NIMH batteries before that happens though. The manual settings are perfectly easy to set up and produce stellar results. Each time I use it and I use it daily, I find more to love about it. As far as the previously mentioned ease of use goes, one might think that it's easy for me since I've been using Digital cameras for several years now and have become seasoned. Well, the Lady I gave my S700 to is not a seasoned Digital camera user. It's her first one. The S700 in some ways has more steps involved than the S1000 to accomplish the same thing. She took to the S700 like a Duck to water with very little coaching from me. The S1000 with more features is even easier to use! I highly recommend the Fuji S1000 for a newbie as well as a seasoned Digital camera user. You'll get professional results with your first click of the shutter. Oh yeah, those of you with Pets! You know how even with the red eye feature on most cameras, your Dog or Cat has the glow in the eyes. With the Fuji S1000, my Puppies eyes are the natural soft, warm Brown she has. Try THAT with another camera! The software is extremely easy to load.

With all my enthusiasm, there has to be at least one down side right? yeah, there is but a very minor one. The manual that comes with it is basically just an out line to get you up and running. The detailed manual is on the software. Nobody likes running to the computer to pull up the manual when you wanna do something a little more than point and shoot. Do what I did. Go put and buy a folder, some plastic sleeves, make sure you have paper and enough black ink in your printer and print out the detailed manual. When I say detailed, I really mean detailed. The manual is a whopping 164 pages! You can save paper if your printer can do two sided pages. It's worth it.

Just go out and buy the darn thing. You won't be sorry.

outside the iso's matter. Shooting above 800 iso w/o a flash, you will start to see some noise. WIth flash, obviously that is eliminated. Now i know for the pros, flash is always a huge reluctance, but ahhhh with this camera you can turn down the flash to use it as a fill light or increase it for a more dramatic affect. You can shoot in black & white, sepia, and blue (can't remember the technical term), plus you can change the saturation on these as well, and or the contrast. I love the wide angle, and was even surprised by the digital zoom! Most digital zooms are worthless, but this looks pretty good and is useful. The light sensor is great for reading available lighting and you have the option of changing your white balance and even customizing one of the WB settings. For a little camera you have lots of control with how YOU want your photo to look like. I am absolutely impressed!

used to remember your favorite custom settings for tricky conditions and can be a real time saver.

The Higher ISO settings (3200,6400) can come in pretty handy for taking pictures in low light without a flash, despite the noise - I prefer using the noise reduction features with the high ISO despite of the loss of detail that comes with it. Excellent camera!
