This little PC is super light easy to transport. The keyboard takes a little getting used to for touch typing, but once you get the hang of it it's not too bad.
The preloaded Linux OS comes with enough to perform all of the basic necessary tasks including browsing the web with feature rich content including Flash animation. It also has all of the standard Linux utilities to enable whatever level of customization that is desired within the hard disk size constraints. The default desktop is easy to navigate as well even for a computer novice.
The wireless works great, I average about 650' (with non-metallic obstructions) from the wireless source with a decent connection. It picked up the nearby networks just fine and connected easily.
For the price this is definitely a great little PC for kids or even people that are really on the go and don't want the hassle of larger lap tops.

I bought this item for a specifc purpose and within hours of getting it I knew it was a great choice. A have to admit a friend who earns a living as a computer professional helped me decide. Right after I received it and took it to the place he, I, and other friends visit a lot he had to checked it out. Well, he ordered one right there and 3 others took down all the info and thought they would also order it. And let me tell you their purposes were different from mine. So it's a shame Amazon doesn't have a referral program for maybe some gift cards. This item is really nice. Just what I need to write short stories. My regular laptop, which I rarely use, is too heavy and bulky. The keyboard takes some getting use to but what new electronics don't. Bought the Kindle book reader same time and it's hard to put one down to pick up the other. Am not that smart about hardware. All I know is if it does what I want it's good. Software-wise I do lots of 3d graphics with many commercial programs.

I bought my son a 2G surf so he would be able to enjoy games, internet and computers. After playing with his a few times, loving the Linux OS and not wanting to take my very expencive Macbook Pro on the road during business trips, I decided to get a 4G Eee PC. It's a very awesome little laptop. Nowhere near a Macbook/Macbook Pro but the perfect non-expencive laptop for road/business trips. Fully upgradable, internet access anyway-anytime, fun games, Firefox browser, it has an instant card reader built it which is awesome, webcam and all you need for work on the go. Even though you can load Windows XP on the Eee Pc if you wish, there is no need because the Xsolaris Linux OS that comes pre-loaded on the Eee Pc is a dream come true. Plus for work you have the power and freedom of Open Office. What more do you need, a fast little laptop, compact & lightweight, has all the features of a full size laptop, FireFox browser, Pidgin Messenger, Open Office & Linux OS at your fingertips (No useless

I rate this highly simply because it fullfilled my original requirement for a very compact, lightweight, wi-fi computer. Specifically for travelling with a vacation trailer. It also has a very sturdy case. I have no needs of a business or corporate commuter, so the installed programs and memory are fine. I use can use thumb drives and now digital cameras have 4 gig memory cards. I love the way it searches for existing wi-fi signals and it saves the ones you have used. I did hook it up to my desktop moniter at home for trial purposes, and worked just fine. It seems to process quickly; I did not install Windows XP. Lack of an internal drive is a trade off but Targus Brand has some USB port powered models.Asus Eee PC 4G Surf (7" Screen, 800 MHz Intel Celeron Processor, 512 MB RAM, 4 GB Hard Drive, Linux Preloaded) Pure White

I've never been a fan of Linux because it is so difficult to install new programs. You don't have the ease of the way it's done in OSX or Windows. I'm a Mac person, and I have a Macbook Pro and a Powerbook G4 (12" cutie). I got the EEE to stash in my office case to use in a pinch, when I wanted to connect "anywhere". I've only had it a few days but I can tell you two very important facts. One, the Linux version installed on it is super and gives you a program for just about anything you would need. After all, this is not intended to replace your main computer. Two, I typed up a document in Open Office and I went to print it and amazingly the EEE had already detected and immediately printed to my home network printer, a Canon IP5200R. With my Macs (and my brother's HP) we had to hook up the printer with a cable to set it up first. The EEE simply knew it was there. I was aghast with delightful amazement.
If you bought the EEE for what it was intended- as a second or third laptop that can,

This is a review of the Eee PC 4G, black with Linux.
I am very happy with this computer! It is small, but the screen is very nice despite my concern regarding the 800x480 resolution. The size is just fine, and I have little hands, so they fit the keyboard without a problem. It has just what I need - word processing and web access! Not at all my main computer, but one that I can carry with me and write where ever I am. I highly recommend!!
I also purchased 1 Gig of memory to replace the 512 that comes with the machine - I got the Crucial 1 GB DDR2-667 Sodimm. Installation was easy (I did it before turning on the machine for the first time) and was recognized without a problem. I saw no reason to get the 2 Gig that Amazon offers with this computer after I learned I would have to do some significant Linux coding to reconfigure the Linux kernel to allow for reconization of the entire 2 Gig. It works just fine with a Gig!
Start up is about 20 seconds, and shut down is about 10

I've been using the 4G Black eee PC for about a month now. Initially, I had a lot of concerns about the size of the monitor and the keyboard, but I'm glad to say that all of these concerns have been relieved! If you have large hands, please don't get this laptop; the keys are small, but for average sized hands, you will probably get used to the size rather quickly. Furthermore, the keyboard has a nice amount of spring to it.
I've been very pleased with this purchase. The laptop is extremely small and is about the size of a thick planner. Bootup takes only a few seconds. Furthermore, the eee is extremely functional. I haven't had any problems or felt any limitations with web-browsing, using openoffice programs, running email client, using Skype; there are a good set of programs already on the machine, but with the eee forums available, you can pretty much install whatever you may need. One feature that I've been particularly taking advantage of is the ability to resize the windows

I bought my Asus Eee with the 4GB memory and webcam, because I was concerned about the 2GB models because their memory can't be upgraded. Well using this model for a week now I can tell you if you are going to use this for web surfing and intend to keep the existing Linux software, get the 2gb model and save yourself a $100 bucks. The built in FireFox browser works on every website, the pages load fast, and I set it to automatically connect to my wireless network when I turn on the laptop. As for me, I love this machine and the existing Linux software works ok, but I will be loading XP on it. I miss my Windows!! Asus gives exact directions in their manual to do this and the XP drivers are on the Asus Eee website. Some interesting points:
1.Pressing F9 when starting the machine will set the machine to factory default. Comes in handy if you use a password and lose it!
2. SM Player works ok but jitters slightly when playing AVI files. You may not notice this, but I do and it bugs me. You

I was looking for ultraportability and high quality. I got it. if you only really use your laptop for checking email, surfing, IM'ing and short documents, then you don't need an expensive machine. Don't let Linux frighten you off. I love it, and will never go back to Windows.

I LOVE-LOVE-LOVE this tough little computer. It handles everything that the larger computers can handle. Although my computer contains 4GB (some have 2GB and 8GM), I have my 8 GB or 16GB digital card available to insert, if necessary. I can also move information to a jump drive by utilizing one of the three ports built in, and then save my 8GB or 16GB digital SD cards for larger volumes. The Eee PC 4GB can also handle "portable ports," allowing access to 4-6 additional ports! The Eee PC also has access to virus protection. Another great feature of the Eee PC computer is that it displays a full screen with readable Micrsoft Works font. Still, another wonderful feature of this computer is that it is compatible with the two other computers and the printers in my house, and I can access and send emails and attachments from "my documents." The Eee PC is easy to use when taking notes at meetings, fitting on one's lap without overheating. The great battery life (2-3 hours) allows plenty of time

I read all the reviews on this computer and all were very accurate. I loaded XP with some hiccups, but only from my mistake. The directions to load XP are very clear and very well done. The only problem i have had is that MS Office does not like to work from time to time. I recommend purchasing the 2GB memory upgrade, i will be purchasing it soon. Battery life is okay. It last just long enough to get through an hour and a half class with some internet browsing and MS Word use. I would recommend this to anyone who is looking for a good computer for note taking and web surfing.

This little machine is great! This PC is NOT a replacment for a full sized laptop and it wasn't designed to be so. I needed an ultra portable device that I could connect to the internet quickly, create documents and view and copy images from my camera. A PDA is just to small and limited to do this. I have a Palm TX and the screen is way to small for internet usage.
This is a perfect device that fits right in between a PDA and a laptop. Computers are mostly used for internet access, email and creating documents. The Eee PC was designed just for this purpose and it excels at it! I can run home and boot this little guy and be on the internet in 30 seconds. Check my email and be back off in less then 2 minutes. My time is just to valuable to waste for a larger machine to boot.
I have been using computers for 25 years and as they say "use the right tool for the job". I have 2 kids in college who love this thing and are buying one to take notes in class. The keyboard is great for the size.

This is a great little computer, fast, easy to use, and best of all, small enough to use in contexts where one wouldn't want to schlepp something larger. The Linix operating system is almost invisible under a good Windows-like graphical user interface that's easy to use, and the provided software handles most standard tasks well and with Windows/Office compatibility (and in most cases faster). The small keyboard takes getting used to, but does work. There's a good support network out there; I easily found and installed an application that turns off the rather noisy fan.

This computer really meets my needs! I needed something that was easy to travel with, that I could take notes on, and have a place to dump my audio and picture files. It doesn't do everything, but it does a lot! Because this little PC fit inside my pocketbook, that's all I had to take on the plane (instead of taking a carry-on bag with CDs and other entertainment). All my music easily fit on the computer with plenty of room to spare. It was so nice to be able to just whip out the computer from my bag and check email at the airport while waiting. It's really cute too and makes a great conversation piece. It made my day when geeks gathered round ooo'ing and ah'ing over my new gadget!
On the downside, the keyboard needs to be addressed. It's not so much the size of the keys, but the touch. I'm a decent typist and I found it hard to build up to a rhythm because of the keys. The touch isn't sensitive enough.

This computer is fantastic. I was worried about the Linux OS, and I was going to wait until the Windows OS came out. I'm glad I didn't - the Linux isn't a problem at all. The computer has no problem reading my Word files, or converting them back to Word. And the set-up was really easy. I even had the wireless Internet working in about ten minutes. I like this little light computer as much as my old Fujitsu lifebook (also around 2 pounds), but this Asus was about one fifth of the price!

I purchased this computer primarily for use while travelling, either abroad or to conventions and the like. After reading some reviews, I opted for the EeePC 4G Surf (no camera or mic), as I don't do Skype. However, I could add that later, if I change my patterns in use of the computer. I find it easy to use and have beefed up the desktop and other features after reading two (and I'm on my third) books and looking at web pages of users with their recommendations. The keyboard is definitely small, but I find I can type at a reasonable speed with three fingers on each hand. Connecting to the internet, via DSL or wireless, was quite simple, and I intend to use it primarily for e-mail, some word processing, and a few spreadsheets now and again. So, it fits my needs nicely. If it were my only computer, I would be a bit frustrated with the limited view afforded by the screen, but it scrolls nicely and is more than adequate for e-mail and the other uses I've already mentioned. I did get

Absolutely love this little laptop. Wish I'd got the 8Gb though. Linux preloaded will hopefully move people toward open-source software once they see it's not so "alien" and "scary." I may be loading a different distro (of linux, of course) in the future, but for now, this is perfect for my needs: communicating while away from home.

love it,it's a wonderful little laptop. just keep your temper on a moderate level, this machine will be your best companion. remember the original VW Bug or today Scion, small, functional, nothing fancy but get you from point a to point b fast, most of your basic stuff done with all basic applications build in. i don't even need to download anything else.
Linux is simple, easy and fast. machine boots within 15 seconds, try that with windows.
pro:
wifi is very responsive and fast.
ultra light weight, you won't feel it.
ALL your basic needs are build in.
reads all your audio/video files through USB or SD.
worth every penny.
con:
just maybe, it needs a larger screen (9" ?)
must get a wireless mini mouse.
keyboard and touchpad are mediocre.
battery life is low.
This laptop could be a 'one man one pc' program.

I got the blue one. It is a really cute small computer. The keyboard takes some time to get used too but it still works. YOU SHOULD BE AWARE THAT NOT ALL PRINTERS WORK WITH THIS KIND OF COMPUTER. And you cannot print directly from an internet page. It has an AMAZING paint program! The cursor is really big compared to the screen. It comes with Powerpoint, Excel, and word (but no times new romans) It weighs two pounds and it gets pretty good internet connection. It DOES NOT have a place to put CDs, just to let you know. It seems to me that this computer is designed for a little kid but I don't really mind. It has a penguin theme. I haven't really had a problem with this computer except that the "l" key sticks some times. The recharger cord even comes with some Velcro to keep the wire wrapped up. How thoughtful! I highly recommend this computer. Actually a couple of days after I received it, I sent a picture of it to my sister and the bought one in pink the next day. I've shown it to all my

I was skeptical at first that this product would meet the expectations I had from reading a review about it in my local newspaper. However, I couldn't be more satisfied with it's power, versatility, compatibility, and portability. It's a real hot number in a small package.
