the camera, it's dissapointing that a product that purports to be made in Japan has such a low-end feel to it.

3. Will not store still photos to the HDD!! What is that about? I don't understand why Canon not only forces you to use a serperate storage media for stills, but also chose the 'mini SD' format (halfway between standard SD and micro SD), which is arguably the rarest of card formats around. Even sony's proprietary 'memory sticks' are easier to find. The only way I could get a 'mini SD' card for my HG10 was to buy an adapter that accepts a 'micro SD' card.

Aside from these few complaints, this is a great camera and I have enjoyed using it to record hours of precious memories with nary a glitch in performance. Good battery life and brilliant picture quality in either HD mode. Considering it rivals some cameras in the $1000 range for performance and features, this is an excellent value. The OIS is possibly the best feature, and it quells the jitters from hand-held shooting even at the lense's longest focal lenth.

with performance that should last indefinitely for the kids -- particularly if you use Open Office (a great FREE alternative to MS Office).

So if you want an economical system for the kids that will allow them to play today's memory/CPU intensive games AND be able to do dual duty as a "real system" capable of running office and home productivity suites, check out the Acer Extensa or even the Aspire systems. In the long run, it will be cheaper since you won't be looking at having to upgrade in a year as the needs of the kids and your family changes.

(Con) The joystick button -- used to navigate, select a function, rotate photos, etc. -- is so tiny and overly sensitive that I find myself constantly choosing the wrong function with it. Just as a side note, I'm a female with relatively small hands. I imagine it would be much worse for a man with larger hands. (Pro/Work-Around) You can choose to use the remote control instead on the onboard joystick.

(Con) The operating system does not have built-in move or copy functions. To perform these operations, you have to cut/copy the item and then paste it in the new location. This is a slow and painful process! Also, the operating system does not have a built-in function for creating a new folder. (Pro/Work-Around) You can connect the Picture Porter to a desktop or laptop computer (via the supplied USB cable). The computer will see the Picture Porter as a removable hard drive. You can then use Windows Explorer to perform file and folder management functions, defrag the built in disk, etc.

(Con) When viewing "portrait mode" photos, the picture porter DOES NOT automatically rotate the picture for you. (Workaround) You can use the joystick or remote control to rotate the picture manually.


Screen/Speakers:

(Pro) The screen resolution and image quality are very good ... even when zooming in on a photo.

(Con) The screen is smaller than I expected. The specs say 3.6"; but mind you, that is the diagonal screen measurement. The actual screen is just under 3" wide. Unless you have the eyesight of a hawk, the screen is really too small for watching videos/movies.

(Con) The sound quality from the tiny built in speaker's is awful. For decent sound, you have to use the earphones (included) or external speaker (not included).

(Con) The earphones act as an antenna for the radio; so you can't listen to the radio without using them.

Other Comments:

Aside from the ability to download directly from a memory card, and the massive storage capacity, most (if not all) of the features of this unit are available on a much smaller and less expensive MP3 player. There is no way I would it carry this unit with me on a daily basis ... e.g. as my "brag book" for showing off pictures of my grandkids, or to listen to my MP3 music files. It's just too bulky for that! And, as I mentioned earlier, the screen is really too small to be a serious video/movie viewer.

All things considered, if I had it to do over again, I'd buy the 40Gb model instead of the 80Gb. I bought the 80Gb model in anticipation of using it as my photo "brag book" and music player; but as I mentioned above, it's really too bulky for that.

is great for certain special situations.

I note that many have complained about shooting in low-light conditions causing excessive graininess in the results, but I have not observed this yet, shooting indoors with what I consider quite low light. The camera also seems to handle large light differentials quite easily: I had my wife take some shots of me while bowling (a feat in itself, as she is definitely not a camera person, so being able to do this is testimony to its ease of use). Bowling alleys have quite bright lighting on the alley itself, while the area behind the alleys is usually very dimly lit. The resulting videos that swing between both the dark/light areas and those taken from dark to light and vice versa show no flaring/glare marks or loss of focus. And the videos had more than enough resolution for me to be able to discern some mistakes I was making in my approach and ball delivery, which is very good as the critical items in bowling happen very quickly and in a very small area (wrist and fingers).

I was very pleased with the camera's close in focusing capability, finding it possible to film a beetle crawling on my rose bushes from just a couple of inches away. The 10x telephoto not only works well, it remains quite steady with the auto stabilizer on. Still picture resolution is more than adequate for anything except high-detail professional portraits, and compares well with shots taken with my 5 megapixel still camera.

I was a little unhappy with the audio quality using the built in microphone, as it seemed a little muffled and indistinct for any sounds more than about 5 feet away, while close sounds (i.e., me talking while filming) could be overly loud.

Battery life is a definite problem. The advertised approximate 1 hour on the provided battery is perhaps a little optimistic, and for any extended day trip where you expect to use the camera throughout the day I'd recommend carrying at least one and preferably two spare batteries.

Transferring videos from the camera to my computer was quite easy, and did not seem to take an excessively long time for the given file sizes, but I was not happy with the provided Corel software requiring an online registration to use it at all. Are they really so concerned about piracy that this step is necessary? The functionality of this software is ok, though it probably won't win prizes, but it does provide enough features to do most of commonly required editing and archiving tasks.

For a camera costing this much, I wish that they had included three very vital accessories: a miniSD card for still photos, a miniHDMI-HDMI cable, and a carrying strap. The cable is almost unfindable in stores, you'll need to order it on-line, but once you have it and hook up the camera to an HD TV, the results are truly amazing, looking like the demo shots you often see on the HDTV's in-store displays.

Overall, this is an excellent camcorder, with great ease-of-use and video results that are outstanding. It makes earlier technology camcorders seem positively ancient.

MobileMe Family Pack

on my ipod touch (or iphone) and my home computer in another country is updated.

As an added benefit I really like how everything flows together. I realize that I can publish my pictures on another site but I like how iPhoto integrates into my online gallery. I realize that I can publish videos to any site but I like how iMovie integrates to my gallery.

Some have said that all of these features in mobile me can be found in other places. Most of the online features are available but they are not integrated, they are unreliable, and who wants all of the advertisements? I had been using these work arounds prior to .mac and now mobileme... it is worth the $112 or so that mobileme family pack costs to not have to deal with the other services.

After using the service for a few weeks, I upgraded to the family plan so that my wife could use it as well. She loves it.

One of the things that swayed me to purchase the PS3 was the fact it was a Blue ray player too. i am a big movie guy, i like watching movies and all that. i watched 300 on it and it don't not disappoint at all, it was redicilous thats how good it was. i mean that alone is worth buying the PS3. So in conclusion i believe anybody whos a gamer don't matter if your just a casual or hard core gamer, a movie buff like me should get this console. Basically u getting three things out of it ... Blue ray player ... game console.. Internet. what else can you ask for. If you don't have one...... get one its worth it!!!

My brother has a Blu-ray drive built into his Dell tower system with enough ram to make a pixar film and Windows Vista still gives you lazy playback and tons of studder which drives me up the wall. With the PS3 upscaling of my old DVD library, it is a complete system that in my opinion outguns anything out there. Way too many positives including reliability to not give the PS3 the edge over anything gaming or otherwise. So do yourself a favor, get a Sony XBR series LCD TV with a PS3 and don't look back or at anything else out there. You won't regret it.

No, it's not going to produce a cinematic epic (you'd need at least a $40,000 broadcast quality unit to do that with) but it'll not only captur your life's moments but it can be utilized to produce a pretty cool low-budget film if you're so inclined, heck I've produced some comedy videos with footage from this thing in part and was very pleased.

My only real MAJOR grip is the battery, I just wish it could last more than one hour! Are there batteries compatible with this unit that will go 2, maybe 3 hours? At least they were kind enough to include a charger/power supply.

Looking for a good place to start camcordering, this is a good one!

I had laying around on my ps3. I finally finished ffvii 11 years later.

When the price of the ps3 was originally announced I remember how put off I was, but now that I actually own one I'm consistently amazed by what this machine is capable of and how much of a bargain it really is.
