I wanted to get a camera that was closer to a DLSR in quality and features, but that wasn't bulky. I wanted to get a camera that I could not only use casually at home and around town, but also on vacation where I tend to take a greater variety of camera shots. The TZ5 checked all the boxes and then some!
Other reviews compare it to the Canon sd870is and other cameras so I won't go into that here. Here's how I see it:
Pros:
- The lens and 10x optical zoom. Simply fantastic. I know, you may think you don't need the zoom. And I agree, for the most part, you probably don't. I'm certainly no professional photographer, but I thought about it, and those occassions when I do need more than your standard 3-4x zoom actually comes up more often than I would have thought - whether video taping an at bat for a baseball game or taking a close up photo from a moderate distance. And since I bought it, I have wound up using the zoom far more than I would have expected. Particularly in the 5-8x

I am a mountain biker and wanted the new Edge 605 mainly to give me net ascent totals. For all I paid for it, I was so shocked it does not have this feature. None of Garmin's marketing was specific enough for me to know this. I had to go through the manual in detail before I realized it. What a disappointment!

Back before digital cameras, I had a 35mm and a bunch of lenses. I have the 55mm that came with the camera, a 35mm wide angle and a 150mm telephoto. Later on, I got a 28mm to 60mm wide angle zoom and a few years after that, I got a 135mm to 230mm telephoto zoom. I had a whole bag full os lenses. It took a while to get anything on film because it took minutes to ponder the shot, get all the hardware assembled and take it. Then, that was pretty much state of the art in amature photography...
During the digital age, I had a few Sony Mavika cameras that were horrible cameras, but had a long zoom lense on them. They were big and heavy and shot 1.3mp to 2.0mp shots. I then got a little Cannon that was a great little pocket camera but only had a 3X zoom and didn't do it. I then got a Kodak that had a 10X zoom, but it didn't have anything close to a wide angle. I still have most of that hardware and all of it put together cannot hold a candle to this new Panasonic TZ5K.

I think that Canon may have created its own monster with the G series cameras. Far too many people think that they are going to get DSLR performance from what is essentially a point and shoot camera.
Sorry, but there is no free lunch. You can build a camera to high standards. You can have it save in RAW. You can do all sorts of things to improve it. The bottom line is that the G9 is a small-sensor camera and suffers the same fate as every other camera with a small sensor.
Given current technology, nobody can make a small sensor perform like a larger one. Going much beyond native ISO is going to substantially lower image quality by introducing digital "noise". That's just the way that it is and neither Canon nor anyone else has solved the problem. In fact, it may not even have a solution.
That said, the G9 may just be the best small-sensor, high-end p&s on the market. Granted, it doesn't have much competition, but Canon has itself a winner. You'll hear gripes from older G series owners

purchased this to replace my same camera that was stolen in a restaurant. Great quality camera, and a great price at overstock. Would recommend getting a larger memory card too, as the one included only allows about 14 pictures before it is full. Overstock shipped it the same day, and I received it that night! Wow!

I bought this camera before going on a European Cruise (I'm American).
Pros:
1. Camera films great standard video (640 by 480).
2. Camera pictures are good under all lighting conditions and are 10 MP.
3. Camera does TIME-LAPSE video, taking a picture every 1 or 2 seconds (you choose) to film scenes over a long time. I used it to video a home renovation project. It was a lot of fun to look at afterwards.
4. Camera can sense which way you're holding the camera and shifts the image on the screen just like the iPhone does! Great during playback of video and still shots to always fill up the whole screen.
5. Camera has a lot of interesting special effects, like color swap, black and white with only one color developed (ex: black and white landscape with blue sky showing as blue).
6. Very small and easy to put in your pocket. It was great for my trip. I left my bulky 10MP SLR and Mini-DV camcorder at home, why lug that stuff around when this camera takes awesome pictures and video!

I'm Dustin Diaz, a Web Developer and Photographer at Google. This is me talking about my D300. I have opinions and I talk about them here. Overall this is an excellent camera and would highly recommend this camera. If anyone has a question or comment, feel free to comment on the video. Cheers.

A friend received the same item for a gift and recommended it highly. Even though the screen is black and white, it's classy and the streaming music allows you to listen and surf at the same time.

I owned both the Canon Rebel XTi and 40D with 24-70 F2.8 L and 70-200 F4 IS L and just used them as a casual amateur photographer. I was very happy with the images they produced. I was even strongly considering the 5D when along came the D300 w/ 18-200 VR lens. We all know Canon and Nikon regularly leapfrog each other. But I seriously believe 2008 is Nikon's year. I compared the image results from the 40D and D300 and the latter just trumped the 40D hands-down on every aspect. It was close to film quality. Colors were more vivid, ergonomics are MUCH better, a rockin' LCD screen, dust and weather sealing, 51 AF points, 100% viewfinder coverage, vital controls like flash exposure compensation are not buried in the menu, ISO 1600 images with little decrement in quality, etc. Taking photographs is lots of fun with this bad boy. Another big reason for the switch was the 18-200 VR lens. Instead of changing lenses and risking dust to get in the sensor, I just leave this lens on and it

I've been using the D300 for slightly over a month now and so far I haven't been disappointed in any way with how it's performed. At the beginning I wasn't getting pictures as sharp as I would have liked them but that was mostly my fault and since then I've refined my technique and I don't think I've ever seen sharper results. The camera is fast and paired with a faster CF card you can just keep shooting and never run out of buffer space shooting in raw.
If you're coming from an older camera like the D70s like I did, some of the new features may take some getting used to, the biggest change was the focus points. They did away with Closest Subject, the Dynamic Area focus is now quite complex with options for 9/21/51/51 point 3d area tracking options and the third option is "Big White Rectangle Mode" Ken Rockwell refers to it as such and since I can't remember it's actual name, I'll just refer to it that way. The Nikon D300 is everything the advertising claims and more. I own a D200 and as such a person you wouldn't think I would need to upgrade to a 300, however, I needed a second camera and thought what the hey...lets get the newer one. And, it makes the d200 seem like a kids toy. The options are even better laid out, the reaction time is faster, and the quality of the image is unreal. This camrea is all Nikon claims it is and more.

I've been a long time photog. Back in the 80s I got into 35mm cameras with a Canon AE1 and A1. I then purchased a Rebel 35mm and used it for many years (still have it). A couple of years ago I purchased a digital Rebel XT which was soon uprgaded to an XTi. Both camera's were awesome and I never had a single problem with either of them. As most upgrades go though, each newer model provided new useful things which made the newer camera that-much better than the old one.
I'm not going to write all the "the camera does this and not that" type things that everyone else has already written. You can go the Canon's website for all the specs. I am however going to say that I have purchased many things from Amazon over the years and never had a single problem. I decided to go to my local camera store for this purchase though; only because I wanted to handle the camera and play with it for a while before making a decsion.
I was torn between upgrading to the XSi or 40d. I had heard many

I wanted a small camera for still photos and video and my research pointed to this camera (Lumix TZ5). I am not disappointed after using it for a month. I had been very satisfied with my tiny Canon Elph cameras over the years, but wanted something that would give me 16:9 wide screen capability and better quality video. I find I am using video more and more and really enjoy making short DVDs (using Apple iMovie) after a trip or event. I incorporate still pictures and video (movies) in the DVDs.
As an example, I recently attended a music concert featuring (among others) my grandson. The performance was in a poorly lit auditorium, so the low light capabilities were tested. My son was also shooting video using his Sony Handycam (several years old, mini-DV), so I had an opportunity to compare. I was very pleased with the video quality (shooting in hi-def) and my camera clearly outperformed his. One feature I really appreciated was the ability to view the video on the camera's display and take

It's difficult to find much wrong with this camera. Sure I would prefer a better quality and faster lens, but for the price of this body/lens combination, the lens was basically free. The picture quality is excellent by any standard. I have a degree in commercial photography, and have purchased 7 digital cameras in the last 2 ½ years. I study them quite thoroughly, and this camera seems difficult to beat, until you are well over the $3000 mark. Ok, it does have a plastic body. But this is also a plus. The camera is quite small and very light weight. You will not be disappointed.

I am sending in my second Digital Elph for repairs and i am expecting a similar outcome as the first. The lens on these cameras frequently malfunction, making them virtually worthless. The first time the lens malfunctioned, Canon claimed it was something I did and therefore, was not covered by the warranty. Believing them and loving the camera, I purchased a second one just five months after purchasing the first. Not even eight months later, the second camera did essentially the same thing, flashing "Lens Error" just moments after I successfully used the camera. I called Canon for the second time and gave a similar explanation as written here. They gave me zero sympathy or concern. After doing some research, it appears Canon has received numerous complaints on the Digital Elph lens as it frequently malfunctions. The kicker is is that they will only fix it if there is no damage by dust, dirt, sand, or normal wear and tear. You guessed it, very few repaired under warranty. Despite numerous

I like this camera a lot. Good speed and image quality for the value. After seeing the Canon A580 I think I may have purchased that one, but I was looking for something very user friendly for my wife, so this works fine. The one feature that I find oddly cool is the "Panorama Assist", which helps to create good panoramic images. Basically, after you take the first picture, it keeps part of the picture on the screen while you look live at your target which allows you to line up the next shot...Really cool, and a smart feature. (it may have been around for a while, but I'm a Canon user) :)
My only issue is with the terrible software included. There is no editing software included....who does that?? It includes a panorama maker and a transfer software, and quicktime...because that's supposed to be helpful or something....
The "Nikon Transfer" software...first, its ugly...looks like something a teen developer made. No style to it, but it doesn't do anything worthwhile besides a bridge

Excellent choice for any land based travel. Contains roads as well as topo, including trails which is a big help for unmaintained trails or for wandering off the marked trail. No more searching the web for sunrise ,sunset ,and moon phases for your future trip date; just use the short cut key and then rock & roll the wheel. The large screen can be seen through a screen proctor in direct sunlight with ease. The compass functions even when your not moving!! 3D image could help anyone traverse the Grand Canyon. This is my second portable GPS and by far the best, a little heavier than most and a shorter battery life than others, but I wont set foot on or off trail without it.

You'll see mixed reviews on the quality of the photos, but I find the quality outstanding for a compact camera, or for any camera for that matter. The photos that you'll see are all taken in the easy mode, which is called "IA" for Intelligent Auto, and they were all taken without flash - even the one inside the screened porch.
What I love most about this camera is it's ability to keep the subject in focus, even when the subject and/or the photographer is moving! I shot a butterfly fluttering around, with the zoom (in IA mode) and it came out perfectly in focus. The photo of the horse & buggy was also taken effortlessly in IA mode with the zoom. I did a lot of research on cameras, and I am glad I purchased this one. It's very simple, works great, even though it's not a video camera it does a great job. Just know that when taking a video, that when you try to zoom in or out the picture loses focus and sometimes dosen't recover very fast or at all. Plan on keeping it in one position, hey after all it's not a video camera. The view finder is awesome, great detail and supper clear. I didn't think the 10x zoom was all that necessary, but I was wrong, I use it a lot, more then I thought, works great. For a point and shoot camera I would put it up to just about anything. Battery life is great never had a problem plenty of power. I got the blue one, and it's nice. Won't need a new camera for a while this should do the job for quite some time. Five stars,

I upgraded to the D300 from the D80 about a month ago. I have been an advanced amature and avid Nikon user for many years. The D300, simply put, is not only the best camera I have ever owned, it is the best value.
The D300, of course, includes many improvements from previous digital Nikon SLRs which it shares with the D3. Some of these improvements are incremental, others are much more useful for people who really care about their photography. These include the new processing system for exposure, the new 51 point AF system, and especially the greater flexibilty in the D300 for modifying color saturation and gamma values. This allows much more flexibility for creativity than for previous Nikons I have owned before. For example, setting the color saturation for vivid with a plus 2 or 3 value allows me to take photographs with much deeper color on the D80 or the D200. In addtion, the gamma control allows manipulation of overall tint without the need for having to purchase a range of color
