I bought this drive to separate my data from my bootable O/S drive, so I could use Windows 7 to create an image of my O/S. The install took all of 5 minutes. I did have to purchase the data cable separately, and a conversion power cable as my machine was out of the SATA power cables.
This drive is really, really fast. Moving my data files over (about 30GB) took minutes, compared to copying them to a USB drive or DVD which was a pain.
My machine performance and boot up seems faster now too. I did move my paging file to this second drive, and I think having the data on a different drive helps with the O/S performance too.

The Good - Compared to the hard drive's I've purchased in the past, I would highly recommend this one. Besides the amount of additional space it provides, it expeditiously serves its purpose.
The Bad - If you're tech saavy, the initial setup is a piece of cake. DO NOT LOSE THE INSTALLATION DISK!!! Unlike my Seagate drives (simple plug and play) if you hot swap between computers, you'll need the disk to install the drivers and other nonsense that makes it run smooth.
The Ugly - If you have no clue what RAID is, find a smaller hard drive.

Put hard drive in an External Maxtor II one touch case to replace bad drive. When I start the drive it sounds like its about to die. But after about 3 minutes it becomes quite. After the startup is complete the drive only makes expected noise of being wrote to.

I converted over to Windows 7 and thought this would be a great time to get a new hard drive and might as well make it big. I plan on working with video a lot more this coming year and this is a great way to start.

Just used it to transfer all my files from my laptop to my desktop. Worked good for that. It has a backup file and all of that, but I didnt really need it. Good price too.

I've always had Maxtor drives in the past and have never had any problems with them. They just don't die. I've still got an old 20 GB Maxtor from 2001. That said, this is my first WD drive and I'm really happy with it. The price is good, lots of storage, and it seems to be pretty quick. I'll have a better idea in a couple weeks once my new system is done; right now it's running off of a Promise SATA PCI card. If you're looking for a good 1 TB drive, I see no reason to not get this one.

One of the primary reasons I bought this drive was for the 5 year warranty. I want a reliable drive for backups. However, when I registered the drive online, it showed the warranty running out in three years. I tried to resolve the issue via email to no avail--even after sending in proof of the purchase. I called customer support and they said it must just have a 3 yr warranty. I pointed them to their web site where it stated 5 yrs. The warranty info in the box also said 5 yrs. They told me to email proof of purchase in again to another email address. I did that and still no update to the warranty period. I've read about other people having the same experience. So if you are buying the drive for the 5 yr warranty, you may not be getting what you expect.

I have to say that this is my first 1TB HDD and it works great so for. I bought it in 2008 on black out friday for $160.Its tranfers files slow with usb 2.0 but with firewire or esata its alot faster about half the speed that's for sure. Can not use all 1000GB cause about 30GB is used up already for the software to run it.I put movies, songs, video clips, pics, and ect. its a little slow after filling it up but works fine and need to by another one in a couple of weeks when the next black out friday hits that's for sure.

I switched from Seagate drives to WD some time ago and have no regrets. This drive runs cooler than I expected and is rather fast for its size. I formated it (quick format) with a outboard dock in about 2 min and installed it with no problems. I did run a complete scan before installing my backups, that took a couple hours. No errors or bad sectors.
All drives can fail no matter who makes them. This is my 5th WD and I am very happy with them.

Read the 5 pages of support issues on this drive in Seagate's forums or the 30+ pages in Apple's forums (and note: this isn't an issue exclusive to Apple systems)... or read the reviews at Newegg... this drive has MAJOR reliability issues. Don't believe all these 5 star reviews from people who reviewed the drive the day they installed it. It will run great when you first put it in. But 15-60 days in you will start hearing clunking noises. Your system will start freezing for a second or two here or there. The drive's load cycle count will start to skyrocket (to the point that even under "normal" use the drive will fail within a year by Seagate's own numbers). If you're really unlucky, the drive will suddenly die. Don't play russian roulette with your data. Don't fall for this drive's relatively low price or nice specs. The most important spec in a hard drive is reliability. This one sucks.

I have had this backup hard drive since July '09, and have not experienced any problems with it. I have an iMac and it took very little effort to set it up, and start backing up my computer with a third party backup app. that I use. The first backup took about 2 - 3 hours, and the succeeding backups since then take about 20 - 30 minutes. I have about 500 GB of data that I back up with this unit on a regular basis. The only minor problem that I have found is that the on/off switch is located in the back of the hard drive, and would be much better if located in the front. Otherwise, no other complaints.

This drive is fast and includes the legendary Western Digital warranty and support. It does not include an redundant Molex power connector so the WD "Secure Connect" SATA cables can NOT be used with this model. You have to use the SATA specific power connector. I was led to believe that all new WD drives were going to include the Molex connector, but this one may be new old stock as it is not present.

My 500 Gig dell factory Seagate drive running VISTA crashed after 1 year. I purchased this 1tb drive, installed Windows 7 and was up and running in under 1 hour from start to finish, The drive is quiet and fast and a very good value for the money

At the current price, you are gambling that you will get a working product. If you don't like taking a risk, I would advise you look for another printer. This printer has not printed more than 1 or 2 pages without failing. Paper jams on EVERY use. Sure, this is likely one bad item out of many, but now I need to decide whether I want to spend my time wresting with the return policy and/or manufacturer. This may go in the trash today. UPDATE 11/09/2009: Brother warranty service very quick. They are sending replacement plus a pre-paid air bill for sending back the old printer. Update will be provided if/when a working printer is received.

After some annoying experiences with DOA Seagate drives I spent a little more for Western Digital. Happy I did. This is an excellent drive. Set up flawlessly as I clean installed Windows 7. Recommended

I wish I had seen compugeek review before ordering. I just spent an hour with Western Digital Technical Support confirming the same thing. The unit in the box is not labeled as shown on external box. The unit does not have the FreeFall technology. My Western Digital Support case # is 110709-70709-6814926.

Everything is good. I am using it through a USB and these are my only complaints. I usually don't shutdown my computer, but rather have it sleep/standby, and the disks don't turn off, but keep spinning. I don't mind, other than wondering if that will lessen its life. The auto backup is good, it just takes a lot of time and resources to do. I'd rather just drag and drop the files I really want to save. Occasionally the disks inside start to vibrate and make noise, so I've just had to hold it for a second and it goes back to silent. Other than that, this has been great! I like how it is going to last me a long time and is very upgradable with all the different connection options in back. Great so far!

BIG home project - convert 150 VHS tapes to DVD. This was quickly filling up my hard drive on the computer, so I needed a lot of backup space. When attempting to copy MY VIDEOS folder (~350GB) over to the external hard drive it would freeze up. It never successfully copied over the first file. The .AVI files were quite large (up to 30GB). Returned it ASAP to get my money back.
Smaller, office type files (.DOC, .XLS, etc.) copied beautifully, just not the reallly large ones. So, while I say that I wouldn't recommend this to a friend, it would only be true for someone trying to do what I did.
