Western Digital My Book Studio II - 2 TB (2 x 1 TB) USB 2.0/FireWire 400/FireWire 800/eSATA Desktop External Hard Drive WDH2Q20000N

The Good - Compared to the hard drive's I've purchased in the past, I would highly recommend this one. Besides the amount of additional space it provides, it expeditiously serves its purpose.

The Bad - If you're tech saavy, the initial setup is a piece of cake. DO NOT LOSE THE INSTALLATION DISK!!! Unlike my Seagate drives (simple plug and play) if you hot swap between computers, you'll need the disk to install the drivers and other nonsense that makes it run smooth.

The Ugly - If you have no clue what RAID is, find a smaller hard drive.

I have to say that this is my first 1TB HDD and it works great so for. I bought it in 2008 on black out friday for $160.Its tranfers files slow with usb 2.0 but with firewire or esata its alot faster about half the speed that's for sure. Can not use all 1000GB cause about 30GB is used up already for the software to run it.I put movies, songs, video clips, pics, and ect. its a little slow after filling it up but works fine and need to by another one in a couple of weeks when the next black out friday hits that's for sure.

Brother HL-5340D High Speed Laser Printer with Duplex

At the current price, you are gambling that you will get a working product. If you don't like taking a risk, I would advise you look for another printer. This printer has not printed more than 1 or 2 pages without failing. Paper jams on EVERY use. Sure, this is likely one bad item out of many, but now I need to decide whether I want to spend my time wresting with the return policy and/or manufacturer. This may go in the trash today. UPDATE 11/09/2009: Brother warranty service very quick. They are sending replacement plus a pre-paid air bill for sending back the old printer. Update will be provided if/when a working printer is received.

LaCie 2 TB D2 Quadra Hard Disk eSATA/FireWire800/FireWire400/USB 2.0 External Hard Drive 301500U

Everything is good. I am using it through a USB and these are my only complaints. I usually don't shutdown my computer, but rather have it sleep/standby, and the disks don't turn off, but keep spinning. I don't mind, other than wondering if that will lessen its life. The auto backup is good, it just takes a lot of time and resources to do. I'd rather just drag and drop the files I really want to save. Occasionally the disks inside start to vibrate and make noise, so I've just had to hold it for a second and it goes back to silent. Other than that, this has been great! I like how it is going to last me a long time and is very upgradable with all the different connection options in back. Great so far!

BIG home project - convert 150 VHS tapes to DVD. This was quickly filling up my hard drive on the computer, so I needed a lot of backup space. When attempting to copy MY VIDEOS folder (~350GB) over to the external hard drive it would freeze up. It never successfully copied over the first file. The .AVI files were quite large (up to 30GB). Returned it ASAP to get my money back.

Smaller, office type files (.DOC, .XLS, etc.) copied beautifully, just not the reallly large ones. So, while I say that I wouldn't recommend this to a friend, it would only be true for someone trying to do what I did.

This is my 6th LaCie drive. The other five still work after multiple years of constant use. The only thing that has gone wrong with them has been the power adapters. LaCie has always replaced them at no charge to me. Great customer service by the way.

When I got this drive I was impressed with the size, the ease of installation, and the speed. As I used it, however, I found that many of the files I "backed up" were "corrupt" when I tried to open them on my other computer. The biggest issue happened yesterday, however -- the drive got pulled off the table onto a storage box (a drop of about 15 inches). The drive is now dead. Now granted, a drive shouldn't have to withstand a drop -- but it's still disappointing.

The drive is fantastic. There was a little snag in getting the drive letter to show in my computer but reading the Windows help fixed it in 2 minutes flat. Other than that it was plug and play.

I had two serious failures with this hard drive that led me to return it to Amazon. 1. It had repeated write failures, causing error warnings and termination of write/copy functions. 2. The drive continuously self-ejected from my computer. I'm not sure if these failures are fundamental design flaws or the problems of a single unit, but I highly recommend not wasting your time with this hard drive.

Please read to the end for resolution. The fax itself is just what I wanted. What I didn't want was to stop set-up to drive to Walmart at dark thirty to gat a USB cord that was supposed to be with my package to complete set-up. So I didn't spend $61.80 total. I spent another $21.65. When I logged into Amazon for their packaging review (I bought machine from Amazon) they indicated I had no recent orders. Therefore, I couldn't quickly ask for help. I found an Amazon customer service number online and called. Rep. Belinda, in just over a minute, apologized and promised to refund my credit card. I looked the next morning and it has been credited plus 35 cents (rounded off by rep) This was amazing service for a disgruntled, crabby customer. Good job and kudos to Amazon. And I'm back to doing my stuff with my new fax/copier/scanner/printer.

It doesn't look very pretty but it works. Been looking for a convenient way of doing backups. With TB of data we're beyond DVD backups being practical any more. This just works. You plug in the drives, plug the usb into the PC (Windows or Linux). I've been using it with a Sheevaplug ARM PC and running mediatomb from it. The base is solid and stable. Enough said.

Seagate FreeAgent Go 250GB USB 2.0 Portable Hard Drive - Sky Blue

Just found (after I purchased the drive) that there's a 640gb drive available from Amazon but it's not available in the pull down menu. It's a separate product. Seagate also makes a 750gb, 880gb and 1tb version (not available on Amazon yet). Now I have to return the 500gb and order the 640gb. Guess I'll have to pay the return fee, although I hope not.

I just want to add onto what other people have written about this product. I timed a 1.12GB transfer on my Macbook pro and it copied the data in 36 SECONDS!!! That's really great speed for USB 2.0. Very happy with this product. Also to get the original software off the drive just had to use disk utilities and re-partition it. worked too easy.

Started making loud grinding noises within 3 months of purchase. Dead within 4 months of purchase.

Thankfully, it was only used for weekly backups, and I didn't loose any data.

For a drive that wasn't used that hard, I was hoping for better.

This drive has so far been flawless. I didn't particularly want to throw my old drive out since I had just outgrew it. I simply took my old drive stuck in in the extra slot. Set the unit to recognize both drives as one and reformatted so the would work with My Mac. So I have a 1.5 TB drive that works great.

I bought a few of these external hard drives a few months ago. The transfer rate is very quick. They do not over heat, they stay very cool. They are heavy and sturdy and have ample amount of storage space. I would highly recommend these hard drives. They DO have the most important on/off switch which a lot of hard drives don't these days. They are pre-formatted to NTSF, so they are PC friendly right out of the box. They also feature "one touch copying" but I have not tried that yet. A great buy at a great price.

Western Digital 500GB My Book Essential USB 2.0 External Hard Drive

First some context.....15 years ago when I worked at MCI, MCI spent >$150m to set up a data center with 1TB of online storage to support customer invoicing. Today, I have a 1TB hard drive that cost $120 sitting on my desk and I'm pissed about the difficulty of setting it up. So, I know I'm sniveling....but here are my faults with this drive. 1. It comes formatted as FAT32 not NTFS. That means it cannot store individual files >4GB unless you reformat the drive. Given that WD positions this as a video storage device, and as 4GB is about 30 minutes of standard definition video, why the hell didn't they ship it in NTFS format so you can put large videos on it? 2. WD has extensive help on their website for reformatting their drives to NTFS. Apparently this problem is not new to them. Hint to WD...if you have all this help for folks to convert to NTFS....start shipping them in NTFS and save us all a bunch of trouble. 3. Among WD's instructions are special instructions for Vista users...unfortunately,
