Sony Multiformat DVD-R/-RW/+R/+R DL/+RW Recorder/VCR Combo with HD Upconversion
I have both recorders and I saw the difference. The Sony: You cannot record movies from movie channels like HBO ect. In the Panasonic yes you can. The record quality is better in the Panasonic. As a costumer that has both I recommend the Panasonic - DVD-R/-RW/+R/+RW/RAM Recorder/VCR Combo with Digital tuner than Sony.. My favorite brand is Sony but I was disappointed with this.

Bad quality in recording in 3H (LP), 4H (EP), 6H (SLP), 8H (SEP)recording modes and cannot record movies from movie channels (Copy protected movie). Well now you know. The right choice right now is Panasonic.

Sony RDR-GX360 DVD Recorder
Also purchased in August 2008 via a different retailer, but the problem of FREEZING while watching a DVD must be a design FLAW since it did the same thing on my player. Unfortunately, I did not save my receipt and am stuck with this in-operable DVD player. Shame really, usually you can rely on "Sony" but not this time. Buyer Beware.

Sony Multiformat DVD-R/-RW/+R/+R DL/+RW Recorder/VCR Combo with HD Upconversion
I replaced an older Sony DVD Player VCR combo with this unit. I received it on 11/11/08, and have recorded one DVD using the 150 minute setting from a VHS tape, and it worked well. I was hoping to transfer all my VHS tapes to DVD, but this unit will not record from a copyright protected VHS tape. I can't blame Sony for this. I recorded a DVD+RW from the digital TV tuner, and this worked really well. I then tried recording to a VHS tape using SP mode from the digital TV tuner, and the picture was the best I had ever viewed from a VHS tape. The unit was not difficult for me to setup. The quick guide was all I needed. I used the owner's manual for the feature details. I would have liked the display to be a little brighter. Also, I could have used one more set of A/V outputs. Even though I am not using the HDMI connection, I still have a very sharp and clear picture on my Sony HD rear projection TV. This unit has a 1080i resolution which is fine for me, because my Sony HD rear projection TV

Sony VAIO VGN-NR330E/S Laptop (Refurbished)-Sony VAIO VGN-NR330E/S Notebook
Although I purchased a refurbished laptop, it arrived in mint condition. My first surprise was the weight. It is quite heavy for such a slim computer. It functions like new. I am exceptionally pleased with the touch pad which requires a little pressure to move the cursor. On other touch pads I have to chase the cursor around the screen because the pads are too sensitive. I would not want to lug it around campus along with an arm load of books; however, it makes a great business computer when carried in a shoulder bag. Because of the weight, I wouldn't recommend it for those who need to balance it in your lap such as on a flight or train. These are the only downsides I have found. I am blissfully content with it.

Sony Multiformat DVD-R/-RW/+R/+R DL/+RW Recorder/VCR Combo with HD Upconversion
We do not have cable in our area. Use UHF antena only. Tuner OK, not as good as my older Sony Monitor/TV. Great there are 4 inputs!!! Front and back.

Too small buttons for Mens fingers. Very poor button VERY SLOW action on remote. Not the latest in picture size choices for our large monitor.

Our town is small. All 4 channels are same digital and analog. I found could not delete ALL the analog channels completely. I had to leave the lowest and highest analog channels for the channel select button to search correctly. You always have to click past the analog channels. Should be a way to specify ANALOG and Digital or DIGITAL only. Can't ADD Digital Channels with out doing a scan. Some of us gotta move the antena to a different alignment to get the other farther out channels. Should be able to program in the correct Digital station numbers to use. Some digital channels are only active during the day.

No station info and schedule buttons!!!!!! A very desirable buttons. So desirable that

Sony Multiformat DVD-R/-RW/+R/+R DL/+RW Recorder/VCR Combo with HD Upconversion
We actually ordered this device not just to copy old VHS tapes to DVD but to actually copy DVDs to VHS tape. I make DVDs of vacations and family gatherings. The older members of the family do not have DVD players so I wanted to make VHS copies of these DVDs. The device works great and we are very happy with the selection and price performance.

Sony Multiformat DVD-R/-RW/+R/+R DL/+RW Recorder/VCR Combo with HD Upconversion
Without a doubt, this is one of the best DVD/VCR recorders I have come across. I have had absolutely no problems with it, both recording and playback. I received it from the shipper as scheduled, on time, and in perfect condition. Easily set up, the unit worked as depicted in the instruction booklet. Another SONY great!

Sony Multiformat DVD-R/-RW/+R/+R DL/+RW Recorder/VCR Combo with HD Upconversion
I purchased the Sony RDR-VXD655 VHS/DVD recorder combo. I am very pleased with it in general, but I wasn't too happy with the discovery that 4:3, the soon-to-be-obsolete standard screen ratio for DVD and VHS videos, videos images are a bit squished on my high-definition television. There are no settings to correct the screen aspect ratio. The Sony wants to fill a 16:9 ratio screen, no matter the format. I don't expect any other manufacturer's HDMI DVD players correct for aspect ratio, so hook up your old 480i DVD and/or VHS player to any extra inputs at the back of your TVs if you want to see an unsquished picture. Wide screen movies, however, look great.

The RDR-VXD655 records digital over-the-air broadcasts on VHS; however, don't expect the VHS recording, pre-recorded movies or your own recordings, to look as good as DVD. I still haven't tried recording anything in DVD yet.

A cool feature of the Sony is it ability to play 5.1 channel sound when it is hooked up to a receiver. I have

Sony Multiformat DVD-R/-RW/+R/+R DL/+RW Recorder/VCR Combo with HD Upconversion
I bought this recorder to record programs while I'm not home. Isn't that why everyone buys them? It won't let me record cable programs to a dvd. I get a message saying that I am not allowed to record copyrighted material, but it lets me record the same program to the built in VHS recorder, which is NOT in high definition. So I spent all this money on high-def cable and the best SONY tv, and I have to watch grainy video for anything I can't be home to see at broadcast time. Buy some other brand folks. Now I see on-line that not all brands do this.

Sony RDR-GX360 DVD Recorder
I bought this in June thinking it would be perfect for recording and playback. I struck out on both counts. The biggest glitch is when ANY pre-recorded (store bought) DVD gets to the point of "dual layer" transition-the player freezes and wont move. Now, a lot of DVD players pause/freeze momentarily at this point, but this thing just sticks. Im sending it back for repairs. Stay tuned.
The recorded discs seem to play only on some DVD players-which is par for the course with home-made DVDs. BUYER BEWARE!

Sony Multiformat DVD-R/-RW/+R/+R DL/+RW Recorder/VCR Combo with HD Upconversion
I bought this Sony mainly for dubbing VHS archival material onto bullet-proof DVD's. For the most part, I am pleased.

Hook-up and set-up are about as time-consuming as any other electronics toy, but it sure helps if you are reasonably familiar with back-side TV connections and cable paraphenalia. The sketches in the instruction manual did not match my unit. Channel-seeking was speedy and trouble-free, less than twenty seconds.

As for the main reason I got this unit: it helps to use SONY blank DVD's; generic blanks frequently hung the recorder. My computer had no problem with such generics; they recorded just fine.

I do have one complaint, due to my advancing age and declining visual acuity. The remote is silk-screened white on black, in very tiny letters. Getting familiar with control functions took a while. Back-lighting of strategically-placed button functions and better ergonomics would really help in getting fumble fingers properly oriented.

There are limited special effects

Sony Multiformat DVD-R/-RW/+R/+R DL/+RW Recorder/VCR Combo with HD Upconversion
I have now been trying for 24 hours to produce my first VHS tape to DVD transfer. I was FINALLY able to get the transfer to work (Sony's instructions are less than complete) and then completed the tedious task of typing in each chapter title using the point-and-select process using the remote and then after FINALIZING per Sony's instructions so that the DVD would play on other players discovered that it would NOT play on either my other Sony player or my other Toshiba player making the entire process a complete waste of time and money! It should NOT be this difficult to perform this simple task!

Sony Multiformat DVD-R/-RW/+R/+R DL/+RW Recorder/VCR Combo with HD Upconversion
I have owned this product for 24 hours and cannot get it to properly record from a Cable settop box. My first attempt resulted in 10 seconds of video and a couple hours of audio. Discussed with Sony support but no resolution. Next two attempt using the timer resulted in 25 minutes of recorded audio and video, then the recorder powered off and failed to complete the program as specified. Have not been able to contact customer support since then.

Sony RDR-GX355 DVD Recorder
I've had this DVD player/recorder for 7 months now and I haven't encountered any of the problems that others here have. The one I ordered was new, not refurbished, so that may have helped.

It's easy to set up and easy to use, a big improvement over the Panasonic DVD player/recorder I brought this to replace. I use mine mainly to play DVDs and to transfer old VCR tapes to DVD so the built-in copy protection hasn't been an issue for me. If you want to record programs off broadcast or cable that have an anti-copy signal or download similarly protected shows off a Tivo be warned: this recorder won't work for you.

But if, like me, you're looking for a solid, good quality DVD player that will help you get rid of alot of old VCR tapes you have laying around, this is a decently priced option.

Sony Multiformat DVD-R/-RW/+R/+R DL/+RW Recorder/VCR Combo with HD Upconversion
This product is a solid and reliable DVD recorder. There is no instability as there is with some other DVD recorders; It's a great workhorse. If you want to record television to watch later, or to dub all your old vhs tapes onto DVD, this is a great choice. However, the editing totally, royally sucks. I have another DVD recorder from Toshiba that I can edit stuff on in 1/10 the time it takes on the Sony; However, it doesn't have Sony's stability. It doesn't always record what I ask it to record, it freezes up and so on, but the editing is a breeze. If you want to save one of those TV shows on that DVD, cutting out the commercials...be prepared to spend a long time editing with the Sony. I don't know what Sony is up to with their editing. Another family member has another Sony DVD recorder that is a couple of years older than the one I just bought, and the editing is much easier on the older model. It also doesn't limit the title length the way this unit does. I'm actually baffled

Sylvania DVD Recorder/ VCR Combo with Digital Tuner-Sylvania DVD Recorder & VCR Combo w/ Digital Tuner
We've had two of these recorders in a row. First one lasted seven months, second one lasted ten months. With both, we started getting DVD disc error messages "Cannot record on this disc." Of course, we got the message AFTER "recording" a program, so: a) we wasted our time, b} we lost the recording. We record a lot, and probably ran 300 discs through the last one. On both machines, this started out as an occasional problem, and then kicked into high gear, where nothing could be recorded on DVD. VHS works fine (who cares?) They were both DVD brand finicky--working only with Maxell discs. Now, no brand works. Smartest thing we did was to invest an extra twenty bucks for an extended warranty (this at a Fred Meyer store.) We keep all our machines meticulously clean and run a cleaning disc once a week. The extended warranty is essentially a side bet that you believe the machine WILL die. It's a good idea and well worth the investment, because: a) the machine WILL break, and b) you can bet on

Sony Open Box RDR-VX555 DVD/VHS Player Recorder Combo
We purchased this product for about $200. All we wanted was something to convert our home videos to DVD's. We didn't want or need anything fancy, had no interest in recording TV to DVD - we don't watch much TV anyway, and all of our commercial VHS Tapes were converted to DVD a long time ago.

It was about a month old when the disc drawer wouldn't close. We sent it back for $12.00 and got it back about 2 weeks later. We tried it out and it seemed to work fine. Our project to convert our VHS library was put on hold due to other priorities.

Now, here we are - I've burned 5 - FIVE - DVD's and now it won't take another recordable DVD. I put a commercial DVD in, and it says disc error - DVD cannot be played nor recorded.

I'm in for a fight with Sony.

Sony Multiformat DVD-R/-RW/+R/+R DL/+RW Recorder/VCR Combo with HD Upconversion
I researched DVD/VCR combos for weeks. My husband wanted a new DVD player for our new digital TV and I wanted something to record our TV shows that could be watched on our other TVs - hence, the VCR. The QAM/digital tuner is also important because we often record when watching another program. We first purchased a Magnavox but just watching a DVD was torture. This Sony was a great improvement in viewing but disappointing in one major aspect: the tuner preset. We have cable without a set top box of any kind so the hookup is simple. However, each time the lengthy auto preset was initiated, the Sony would only add about half of the digital channels available. You cannot manually add channels to the lineup, only delete. The auto preset takes at least 40 minutes for the digital channels (even though I only have 11 available) so it is pretty frustrating when you get a different batch of channels each time. Then, when I decided to record a digital channel (the only one that the unit consistently
