The Fuji has the lowest noise level at high ISO BUT images become overly smoothed with less sharpness than either the SD880 or the LX-3. The SD880 retains more sharpness than the Fuji as ISO is cranked up to 800 and 1600, but did have more noise. ISO 400 noise is low with the SD880 and images are usable at ISO 800. ISO 1600 should be reserved for low-light emergencies where flash is verboten and if prints are kept 6" x 4" or smaller.

Another low-light advantage of the SD880 (at least for nearly stationary scenes) is the optical IS. This really works and allows lower ISO values to be used with longer shutter speeds. My wife often blurred shots on the SD450 due to camera motion. The IS has helped a lot to reduce this.

So, although the SD880 is not equal to a 3 pound Canon 5D in a small 5 oz package, it does provide unexpectedly good image quality and low noise for a tiny camera, one that can always be with you, just when you need it.

to a text description for each mode. I miss having the scenes on the dial and to be able to see the images as they appear while going through each scene. The feel and the construction of the camera is excellent. If Olympus can just work on their user interface and the auto intelligent mode, this camera can rock. Sometimes when you have to take a quick shot, you want to rely on the auto mode.

it's OK, but not super snappy. It hunts a lot and I find myself using manual focus in somewhat dim indoor light. This is not surprising, given the lens maximum aperture of f/6.3 at telephoto and 3.5 at wide angle.

The small max aperture also dims the viewfinder substantially, again, not so bad outdoors but indoors, it's like you're wearing sunglasses.

The Neutral:
Like all lenses on a 35mm sensor, there is light fall off on the corners. It is pretty well controlled, and disappears by f/8. But, it is helped by the fact that its maximum aperture is small, so that helps mitigate light falloff.

Overall:
If you are looking for a capable walk around lens that won't break the budget or your back, this is the lens to buy, period. Probably not suitable for APS-C sensor cameras (it becomes a 42-450 then), but on a 35mm sensor camera, this lens is a gem. If you have a APS-C sensor, consider the Tamrom 18-250 VC lens. It is every bit as good as this lens is.

I use it with the 24-105 L lens, which costs almost as much as the camera is worth it.
This decisions is tricky - it's very solid, I recommend it. But if I were a first time DSLR buyer right now looking at mid-range cameras, Canon has no advantage over Nikon. The D90 is terrific and cheaper, the D300 and D700 are amazing. Why did I switch to Canon? Simply because I like their lenses better on the high end. The Nikon 80-400 is slow as a dog, although sharp. I would much rather have the Canon 100-400 L. Nikon's high end lenses seem to be a little more expensive, and frankly, there are fewer out there so they are harder to find, new or used.

Canon 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 Telephoto Zoom Lens for Select Canon Cameras

to be a very useful hiking/travel/walkabout lens. This is my first experience with a Canon lens that does not use USM, and the micro-motor is slightly slower and noisier than USM... but not knowing what to expect, I was expecting even slower focusing and, in most situations, I found its focus speed totally adequate - still very quick and without any back-and-forth hunting in lower lighting. But my main gripe about this lens is that Canon did not use USM (who knows what kind of marketing decisions went into this, much as I wondered why the 40D had a 3.0-inch LCD but kept the same 230,000 pixels as the 2.5-inch LCD on the 30D - one of my main gripes with the 40D). For the price, Canon should have included USM with full-time manual focusing. But I did notice that the price has dropped by more than 60 dollars since I bought the lens less than three weeks ago.

The use of a zoom lock switch to prevent lens creep is a very welcome addition that I always wished that their 17-85mm lens also had. The lens does not rotate during focusing, so circular polarizer filters stay in place.

Unlike Canon's USM lenses, the micro-motor focus design of this lens does not allow you to override the autofocus mechanism until you first flip the AF/MF switch on the lens. Furthermore, while the 17-85mm lens lets you use both the focus ring and zoom ring when the lens hood is inverted on the lens, on the 18-200mm lens, since the focus ring is now placed at the very front of the lens (and in front of the much-wider zoom ring), when its Canon EW78D Lens Hood for EF 28-200mm f/3.5-5.6 Canon SLR Lens (not included with the lens) is inverted, the lens hood's "petals" block most of the zoom ring and I have to use my middle finger and thumb to reach in between the hood petals to rotate the focus ring when the hood is screwed on in its inverted position. I would have much preferred that Canon retain the same focus-ring-closer-to-camera-body design that they used on the 17-85mm. But since I mainly use manual focus on my two 65mm and 100mm macro lenses, this is not that big of a deal for me.

At both 18mm and 200mm wide open, the image corners can be a little on the soft side, but when stopped down between f/5.6 and f/11, the image is sharp from edge to edge. But even Canon's 28-300mm L glass, which is also f/3.5-5.6, has its share of design compromises and sharpness issues in a superzoom lens design. So I think that any lens encompassing this sort of zoom range will be tripping over the physical limitations of what can be achieved when compared with a lens with a smaller zoom range. A 18-200mm lens at a fixed f/2.8 with USM and L-grade glass and weather sealing in a lens that weighs less than 3 pounds would be wonderful, and I would gladly pay a lot more for it as single-lens travel/walkabout lens solution, but that product still only exists in my dreams right now.

This 18-200mm lens will now make my 17-85mm lens the least-used lens that I have, so I may eventually end up selling the 17-85mm lens.

Face detection works great, and I really like the TV - self-timer - Face detection combo: I hook the camera to the TV, put the self-timer on Face detection mode, press the shutter, and nonchalantly walk to the spot of my choice before turning to face the camera. The camera reads my face and multiple shots of me are made.

This camera takes BEAUTIFUL indoor photos -- with a flash, that is. (The Fuji F30 had been able to take all sorts of great indoor photos without flash.) The Canon engineers have done a great job with post-processing to get such nice even lighting on indoor photos, especially with such a tiny flash.

I take photos with i-Contrast off. In the playback mode, I can apply the i-Contrast as I choose. And speaking of i-Contrast, I find that the SD880 tries too hard to second guess what photos I want, and the photos tend to turn out a bit flat. The photos all improve tremendously when I use Picasa or Photoshop to deepen the shadows. This is especially true with indoor photos.

The video mode is not so useful. There is no optical zoom with video. The camera fakes a video zoom by doing a digital zoom. Of course, if the video is already only 640x480, doing a digital zoom will get you horrendous resolution. So just pretend that there is no video zoom. The microphone on the camera is bad.

The handling of the camera is very good, and it is a beautiful looking gem. And I hope that its being "Made in Japan" will at least buy me more years than my two terrific but unfaithful Fuji F30's. Now if Canon were to come up with a 28mm F2.8 camera that had the same CCD-sensor philosophy and the manual controls as the F30 (fewer Megapixels for superb noise control), I would really PAY for that camera, bad economy or no.
