I was going to keep this post as short as possible, just as a warning to future buyers, but I could not keep it short as I really had to describe my experience. I am not saying this will happen to you, but this is what happened to me. Use it to make your decision. This is not a review, just my experience with the product and the manufacturer's technical support. Aside from wireless, it also has 4 wired ethernet ports. Ports 2,3,4 stopped working after 9 months of use in a house that was continuously air conditioned/heated at a constant temperature between 70-80 degrees. Wireless and port 1 still work just fine. The firmware was upgraded twice with no change in this condition and the modem was factory reset again with no change. After doing some research online, I have discovered other users reporting the same problem. I contacted Netgear technical support and the first tech did confirm this was a know issue, but that I would receive another call from their engineering department to put me through some troubleshooting steps to make sure that it indeed not working. I was promised they would call within a few hours. Two days later I called their tech support line back after receiving no calls from them and had the second tech confirm that they had my correct phone number and email, but nonetheless they never called. OK so far. I am not upset yet, so I say how do we go from here. The second tech proceeds to take me though the troubleshooting steps by asking me to connect a laptop to the modem. My primary computers are desktops and are very far from the router so if I didnt have a laptop I would be out of luck. Support would stop there and I would have to pay to get their premium gearhead support to proceed!!! How great is that? In case you are wondering why am I complaining about the wired connection if I am not plugging in a computer, I have other devices such as a NAS, media player, VOIP device and others that do not have a browser or any other means of access the router and the whole point of buying this thing was to use them. Anyway, I am deviating from the point. Luckily enough I had an old laptop to use, which I did. To keep things short I ran all the steps the tech put me through and proved that the ports were not working. You would think that would prove me right, correct? WRONG!!! I was told by the tech, that I need to find a SECOND laptop to connect since there might be something wrong with the first one. I got upset, but I did not yell at him even though I was fuming. So according to his logic, it could be my laptop not working. OK, maybe in a weird universe he could be right so I asked my neighbor to lend me a laptop, which we tried and of course it didn't work. At this point he put me on hold telling me he will transfer me to the engineering department, but his supervisor got on the phone instead. He attempted to put me through the same steps the earlier guy did, and at the point I had given up and complied since it was useless to resist. Fortunately, he confirmed that it did not work quickly and told me that he believed me that the device was faulty. However he did not admit that they have a history of problems with this device. What got me upset is the fact that I have to pay shipping to exchange this device (~$17) and I am probably going to get a refurbished one as well. However I am told if the replacement exhibits the same behavior, I would get free shipping on the next one!!! What can I say? All the local computer stores stopped carrying it and only carry the newer netgear model that only stands vertically, unlike this one that doesn't have a stand and only stands horizontally. Can it be an overheating issue? Possibly as it does run hot. But this is just a guess.
