I recently got an HDTV and wanted to get a DVD player with 'upscaling capability.' This, for those who may not know, is a process that automatically converts the pixel output [picture quality] of the DVD you're watching to the pixel count of the TV that it's connected to. This means that playing a 'regular' DVD, utilizing this player and your HDTV, will approximate a HD-DVD or Blu-Ray disc's picture quality [the ubiquitous, but seldom grasped 1080p]. It will not play those formats [HD/Blu-Ray] but the difference in clarity is negligible. You will need to buy an HDMI cable, as only a standard one is included. Slightly unusual in this player is the ability to play, not just CDs and CD-RWs, but DivX files as well. This is a format common to 'ripped' movies found on the internet, so if that's your thing it's a pretty cool feature. It's also quiet, slim, and loads reasonably quick. All in all, if you don't want to drop three to six-hundred on a Blu-Ray but do want an upjump in quality, you can't beat a player under $100.
