As a student, I'm very busy and often my schedule doesn't permit me to watch my favorite shows, sports, and events during their scheduled broadcast. After spending hundreds on iTunes for my favorite shows, only to endure a multitude of DRM restrictions, such as not being able to burn the shows to DVD or Blu-Ray or watch them on my TV without the expensive Apple TV hardware which does little more than allow someone to watch iTunes-purchased content on the television, I decided to get a DVR.
I entertained two options: either leasing a DVR Digital Cable box from my cable provider or purchasing a TiVo system. The DVR system offered by my cable provider does nothing more than the basic DVR tasks: record, watch, pause, and rewind live TV. I decided to go with the TiVo system for the advanced features such as sharing content with other TiVo receivers in the home, transferring content to PC or Mac, transferring videos, photos, and music from PC or Mac to TiVo receivers, and other nifty

Having been a satified customer of Tivo almost since it's inception...I was blindsided by them when my cable company switched to digial service, doing away with all analog signals. Tivo did not notify customers and have not addressed the issues on their web page. Soooooo.....save yourselves a whole lot of headaches and hair pulling. Don't buy this unit. Also consider before you buy the upgraded models with cable card readers....because I have researched this and have found that there are lots of problems with the cable cards. You have to have your cable company install them, which you will be charged for and there is a monthly fee for the cards. When I called and cancelled my Tivo service, the rep offered me an upgrade model for $99.00.....this should have been an upfront offer to all of those, like myself who purchase the Series 2 dual tuners with the good faith that the service would always be available. Shame on Tivo!

I thought I had read everything about this model of TiVo to understand that it is a true dual tuner DVR, but it isn't one. It is a very clever if not misleading engineering feat to achieve dual-tuners on this TiVo, but the way they did it defies understanding. The TiVo digital transition pages on their web site state that as an owner of a TiVo Series 2 DT, I do not need a converter box to view ATSC digital transmissions. This is fine since I now use FiOS. The problem is that I mistakenly understood this implication that the TiVo Series 2 DT works with QAM over cable. In fact, the Series 2 DT does NOT support QAM over cable and probably requires a converter box for over-the-air ATSC as well. The problem for my needs is that my Verizon FiOS service has NO analog channels at all. The "DT" feature of the TiVo Series 2 DT implies that the second tuner can receive basic cable, but that's not true for FiOS and a growing number of digital cable subscribers. What it doesn't make totally

Runs quiet and warm (not hot)
You can turn off the "suggested recordings" could not on older models
Import videos from your PC (with use of free 3rd party software)
Does not lock up like some Cable DVRs do.
Con -
Not High Definition - (upgrade to a series 3)
Cannot use external Hard Drive with this version
This is the 2nd Tivo we have owned.
The first box we bought back in 2004-05. It was a series 1 and we loved it. Then Comcast came along with their version of DVR and we used it for a few years with lots of problems, like always freezing up.
We bought this Tivo series 2 back in Nov 08. and it has been great ever since. I did a google search and found software to move videos from the pc to the tivo and wow we really use it now. There are many uses for TIVO besides what listed on the manuals. Monthly subscription runs $12.95
If you upgrade to a Series 3 then you can add and external Hard Drive for increased storage space (more saved

This was an absolutely useless purchase. I expected the box to provide at least basic functionality like being able to view my home pictures, listen to my music and/or view my videos. None of the above. Unless you buy a subscription from Tivo (what for?) and pay monthly fees of $12.95/mo or $129 per year or $299 for 3 years or $399 for the rest of already not new, rather 4 years used box - the box is DEAD. I mean it - it's a box which cannot be used for anything... The box has very limited functionality even provided you purchased a subscription from Tivo (I did) - because today all cable providers including Verizon FIOS already moved to fully digital channels - therefore you may view only ONE channel at a time... Absolutely, absolutely useless purchase... Well, I [sorry for my stupidity] cannot figure out what the Tivo subscription for unless you can use the unit as two channel DVR? Even the programming guide today is available for almost free from many sources... Well, if Tivo offered

Amazon needs to be more honest in their description. A subscription to the TiVo service is required and the TiVo box will not work without a paid subscription to the TiVo service.

The TIVO arrived in good condition and was easly to install. However to use the device you must have Internet access for your tv and subscribe to a service with a montly fee. I was not prepared for either and have returned the device to the original shipper.

This model TiVo is out of date. It will only record Digital and Analog programs and NOT Hi Def. You must have a Multi-Channel tuner card installed in order to receive cable TV channels -- this costs $1.50/month plus a $20.00 installation charge from Comcast -- plus the monthly charge from TiVo is $12.95 (as I recall) -- this is an EXPENSIVE proposition.
I'm returning the TiVo because Comcast offers their Hi Def DVR for $9.95 for 6 moths, then $12.95 there after.
Oh did I mention that if you have Vonage or cable telephone service that you MUST buy a wireless adapter for ~$50.00?
This is not only an outdated piece of equipment, but a very expensive solution to recording TV programs/movies!

Hello All,
If you were ever planning to get a Tivo remember one thing. The customer service stinks! It is easier to have a root canal than dealing with their customer service department. Once turn on you will have to cancel your credit card to have them stop charging it.
Don't get me wrong I love the service but don't expect any help from their customer service department, plus get one of those "Prepaid" credit card to pay for the service, because if you use a real one they wont stop charging it.

After 5 days of screwing around with it trying to get it set up, pulling the enterainment center in & out 20 times, and probably 8 hours on the phone with suppport, did support finally admit that it wouldn't work with my cable company. They said it was because the cable was all digital. I thought a DVR was a Digital Video Recorder.
I would have to have them come out and run another cable for it to work properly. They said it would only record one channel at a time, not two. Then it would only record from basic cable channels 0-99 and then it wouldn't record on a different channel. So I'd have to watch what I was recording. (I might as well get out the VCR.)
If that's the case, why record it. Totally not worth wasting your time on.
So it gets a 0 as far as I'm concerned.

I live in a dorm and really want to get tivo but I'm not sure it will work in here..does anyone know if it would? Does it just plug into the tv and the wall? Is there any special instillation?

We are very satisfied with the TiVo. It was easy to set up . We also purchased from Amazon the wireless cable at your suggestion. Awesome! My oldest son suggested that I go to Amazon for the TiVo purchase . Apparantly he does a lot of business with Amazon. Kudos to you.

Tivo is really not easy to set up and the support has not been useful. I purchased the Tivo thinking it would give me more control over my viewing of televison. But after several re-initializings, I still don't have compatibility with my cable provider and it's hard to tell where the disconnect is. The tuner is bringing in different channels than my cable provider causing me to miss some of the recordings I have set up. So the Season Pass has proved to be useless so far. I don't have a lot of time to play around with it so for now, I just tolerate the situation until I can get on the phone with Tivo and Cox. It's not what I expected.

I'm so sorry that I couldn't use this product. I'm not very good on the computer end and didn't realize that this product would not work with the new "black box" and digital tuner etc. Still don't understand it completely, but the technician that came to my house to set it all up said I couldn't use it. With this new system coming upon us I feel that when things that won't work on your old TV should state that it would be obsolete after a few weeks. I'm a senior and had no idea that this would or could happen. However, the service and cooperation of all was superb. The customer from whom I dealt with was so friendly and helpful and gracious as well as Amazon themselves. No complaints!!! Just think for us who haven't the knowledge the obsolete items should be marked. Something of that importance needs to be known. I truly have no idea on how or if this product works. It was rated very high when I bought it, but for me it didn't rate at all. Thank you !!!!

I bought my Tivo Series 2 and 3 years of tivo service about 16 months ago and after 14 months, the hardware died. I called Tivo but they said it was out of warranty and I would have to pay the full price for a replacement. After replacing the Series 2, I found out that it does not support the new NetFlix Movies on demand service and once again Tivo says I will have to pay the full price to upgrade to a HD model that supports NetFlix. I was very disappointed that Tivo doesn't provide discounted upgrades to current customers. Next time, I'll just buy a media PC and use that for video recording and video on demand.

This is the third Tivo I have owned. The first one I bought 4 years ago. It is still working well enough to give to a friend. We currently have two running in our house. My wife gave me this one as a birthday present. At first I thought "our old one still works" but when I hooked this one up I saw an improvement right away. The picture clarity is much improved. I especially like the dual tuner feature and the 80 hour capacity. Lastly the ability to rewind 2 channels back a half hour on live TV is awesome. Its a present I will use everyday.

The system is easy to use and is user friendly. Best of all, you can watch everything you WANT to see and in less time! However, you have to get the HD version to be able to record anything (even non-HD channels) if you have an HD cable feed set up.

My husband was surprised when I asked for this as a gift, since he is usually the "electronics" geek, but it is one of the best inventions ever! Watch WHAT you want WHEN you want, forward, reverse, pause ( I love this feature) If you have favorites- put them on a Season Pass and it automatically records them for you. No need to figure out what channel or time they come on- it does it all for you. And it is so user friendly. I could go on and on- sometimes I think Tivo should hire me as a spokeperson. People think "oh-you guys must watch a lot of tv" but I tell them"No- we just watch what we want when it is convenient for us, we control our progrm times" It it SO worth it!!!!!

The dual-tuner TiVo is the best piece of electronics I have bought for my house in 5 years. The dual-tuner is a must, so you can record 2 shows at once or record one and watch one. The wireless adapter option is also a great feature, so I can download shows to my laptop and watch them when I'm on the road and dont need a phone jack near my TV. It allows me to work late, go out whenever and still keep up with my favorite shows on my time! Season Pass and the ability to schedule shows from online are the best features. Very user-friendly, easy setup. Highly recommend to everyone.

i was a die hard replay tv fan forever and then it broke so i went with the tivo. i was used to having the replay delete the commercials but the tivo is just as good bevcasue the best feature in my opinion is that you can fast foward at the fastest level and when you stop it goes back 30 seconds so its usually at the perfect starting point. also the transfer to your pc is the best thing ever

I love everything about Tivo. I watch a lot of TV and I have always wanted to get a Tivo, so i finally did and I am so happy. I know it sounds weird, but i don't know how I lived without a Tivo for so long. I am usually really picky about many things, but after a year and a half with my Tivo, I still have not found anything that I dont like about it. I love that I can skip commercials, I love that I can pause and fast forward my favorite shows, and most of all, I love that I can record my favorite shows so that I don't have to deal with VHS tapes anymore. Other than the basic features that every other DVR has, there are also others like Tivo Suggestions and Wishlist Searching. It was by far, the best buy I've every purchased.

This TV device, used in conjunction with an HD antenna has been a great alternative to cable for me. The two paired up can pay for themselves in a few months, depending on your cable package.
Some of my favorite features include the ability to skip commercials, season passes to shows, and, one of my personal favorites, subscribing to free, TiVo streams like The Onion, Break.com, or a large variety of other short programs.
The biggest problem we've had, however, is when it stops responding. Sometimes it will just glitch and become unresponsive. It will keep recording the show, as a second recording, but in order to get it back, you need to reset it, which can take about 15 minutes. If you do this while the show is still on, you will lose your recording.
And one more warning; when we got a TiVo I thought it meant I would be watching less TV because I could do it at my convenience, but certainly watch more now than I ever have before. But at least there are no more

I finally switched from ancient antenna to basic cable, so I decided to get a Tivo. I don't watch much television, but there are a few shows I like and figured this would work out perfectly for me and my family. Initial setup was pretty simple and I did not run into any problems until I hooked up the Tivo to my phone line. It would not connect to the server to finish the initialization process. Luckily I was able to move my router to accomodate a network connection which worked fine, however, it did take awhile. Once I got it up and running, it was great being able to schedule all my recordings and use the season pass feature. I also setup my computers with the Tivo desktop to be able to put programs on to my hard-drive for future viewing. I was pretty disappointed to find out I have to spend an additional $25 to upgrade to Tivo desktop plus to be able to convert the videos into .mp4 format. I have not yet upgraded to Tivo Desktop Plus, but probably will, just so I can convert and

Great item for those who are busy or on the go. Easy to setup, and isn't too expensive considering satellite radio costs the same. The initial setup took me about 15-20 minutes to do through broad band. The remote controls my TV, cable box and the unit itself without any problems. The tivo suggestions gives it a great advantage over a cable company's DVR unit in addition to actually owning the unit instead of paying monthly for rental charges. The suggestions become more accurate based on the number of programs you give a thumbs up or thumbs down to. The ability to rewind, pause or fast forward programs is a great thing to have considering you don't have to watch commercials anymore. I didn't give it a perfect 5 because you can't expand the memory to record more content. Though the amount it can record is generous, it won't seem that generous after you find a lot of programs you want to watch after using it!

I've used multiple DVRs provided by cable providers before, and now I've used TiVo. I've gotta say, TiVo wins, hands down. You pay more for the service, and you have to buy the box (cable companies "loan" you the box), but they make sure it's worth it. They have to, to continue to compete.
One big, BIG plus: Internet content. If you connect to the TiVo service over a broadband internet connection, you can download videos from the internet and watch them directly on your TiVo. Even better, you can transfer your recorded TV programs to your PC using TiVo Desktop.
The show rating system and viewing pattern recognition work really well. I haven't even watched anything of the sort yet, but it recorded an episode of Mysterious Journeys set in a haunted prison. That's just the sort of thing I love (it turned out to be a lame program, but I don't blame TiVo for that). It also recorded the Daily Show, making me realize that I still needed to set up a Season Pass for that show.

Without a doubt this is one of the best purchases I've ever made in my life. It was very easy to set up and that's saying something, because I have trouble with setting up electronics. But the included instructions walked me right through the set up and I was able to get this working with our Direct TV without any trouble. I cannot imagine watching TV without the ability to pause and rewind. Buy one, you won't regret your purchase!

This Tivo is amazing. I purchased it on a trial basis thinking I wouldn't like it. I never want to have cable without Tivo again. The box has 2 tuners so I can record more than one show at a time (there are caveats to this feature). Once in a blue moon it locks up and just needs reset. But this is likely due to the fact that the box can get extremely hot inside my entertainment center. When that happens I just reset the box and leave the cabinet door open for a while to allow it to cool down. Plus if you decide that you need a bigger Tivo in the future you can go online and search for a pre-loaded Tivo hard drive with a bigger capacity and install it yourself. I do wish that the Tivo service let you connect to your TV while you're on the road.

We upgraded to a dual tuner TIVO and love it! We gave our single tuner TIVO to my husband's parents, who used it until the hard drive died. *frown* But they missed their TIVO so much that they bought a dual tuner one too!
The con of "twice as many shows to watch" is one to be careful about: Before you know it, you'll have six back episodes of Prison Break sitting there waiting for you to watch.
Seriously, though ... if you're not looking at the HD TIVO, the dual tuner is your best bet!! (My husband would love the HD TIVO, but I've still got our TIVO under contract, so he's just going to have to wait until this one dies!)

No longer will you be thinking of your favorite shows being on a given day at a certain time! Television shows are not what your life should revolve around. Tivo enables you to watch what you want, when you want. Skip past commercials and watch a one hour show in 40 minutes. Pause live TV and take a phone call. See something you like? Then hit the record button and come back and watch it later and skip through the commercials. Your kids will not be flipping channels to find something to watch. They can be exposed to a lot of stuff you don't want them to see by just flipping channels. Kid Zone can also make sure they watch what is appropriate. I highly suggest you network your Tivo to you home network and Tivo can put slideshows of your photos on the TV during gatherings along with many other cool things.

I heart my Tivo! You will not ever want to go without this once you buy this. It is great to never miss my favorite shows no matter what. The power to pause, rewind and fast forward live TV is awesome. Recording two shows at once makes my Thursday nights much more enjoyable. I highly recommend for anyone!!

Fast learning curve allows for rapid setup and enjoyment. I can now watch shows that were on when I was unavailable. One of my fave features is being able to download movie rentals right to the TiVo. I use to have to setup the laptop, and mess with speakers, but now it is so simple.
It has enhanced family time, because now we TiVo and watch together when we have time. Love it.

This is my second Tivo and it's great. Functionality wise I couldn't ask for anything better. My first Tivo was a 40 hour box and of course I was thinking, "I never watch 40 hours of TV" but little did I know that was 40 hours at the lowest video quality and about 11 at the best. Tivo sent me an offer to buy this box and transfer my membership and I'm so happy I did. I've had this new box for a year or so and haven't had a single problem, then again I still have my old Tivo and I still don't have a problem with it either. I love that I can record on one Tivo and transfer a show to another.
I've played MP3's from my computer to the Tivo but to be honest I don't really care for it, the sound is fine but I don't like the way it displays the file name on the screen and I don't like how it doesn't like my directory structure, oh well, nothing's perfect.
I love when I ask my friends that have a digital box from their cable company how it compares to the Tivo. Of course they start out

Tivo is the best DVR available on the market. The interactive menus make recording and programming a snap. I never watch live TV anymore! Best purchase ever.

Since purchasing Tivo, I rarely watch live TV. Fastforwarding through commercials is easy and I never miss parts when someone starts talking, the dog needs to go out, or the phone rings because I can always pause and rewind.

Tivo has literally made my life easier. Before I had it, I never got to watch everything I wanted. Thanks to the "Season Pass" feature, I can set this console to record every episode in a season. It's so easy! The hard drive size on this system is also very large. We record lots of shows, and we never seem to run into issues with storage space. I have gotten to the point where I hate live TV because I have to sit through the commercials; we usually just fast forward them. You can set this unit up through a phone line if you have a local access number (Tivo recently took ours away with no explanation), or you can plug it into your home network. When you do, lots more features are opened, such as the ability to check the weather, purchase movie tickets, and set up recordings away from home (even right from your phone if you have Verizon Wireless). Where has Tivo been all my life!?!

No more tapes, no more of my life wasted on comercials, I choose when to watch my shows, I never miss my shows, just so much more than a DVR.
Music, movies downloads, save to my pc or mac, and a ton of stuff down the horizon.

This item is great. Bought it at my local store and had it setup within 15 minutes of getting home. Easy to use navigation screen and buttons allow for quick recording. This product hooked up very nicely with my comcast cable box and pretty much did the rest on its own.

I like the features of pausing and being able to rewind. Also enjoy the easy way to set up to record my favorite shows. I hate the fact that you can't transfer those recordings to DVD or VHS.

Once you try TiVo you'll wonder how you lived without it. I have so many shows recorded I don't know if I'll ever be able to watch them all - but it'll be fun trying!

So much better than the cablevision digital video recorder. The features are just amazing. Based on the genre of recordings you schedule the tivo actually figures out what show you might like (tivo suggestions) and actually records them for you all without having to lift a finger. The other cool features include online scheduling which allows you to schedule a recording on your Tivo from any computer with internet access. I also love being able to transfer recordings from my tivo to any computer on my wireless network and burning them to a blank DVD or watching them anywhere I take my laptop. Definately the best DVR on the market. Monthly service charge isn't to pricey especially if you pay for 2 or 3 years in advance but think they could do a little bit better on the cost of the Tivo box especially the HD Tivo box. Somewhat complicated installation, had a little trouble getting the picture clear on the basic cable channels but think it had to do with cable wires and not Tivo. Worked fine

I've had a Series 2 Tivo for a while and loved it. This Dual Tuner Series 2 is even better.
Firstly Tivo is more than a gloried VCR. The remote and onscreen menus have got to be the easiest to use (and best looking) of their kind ever created in a consumer product. That's something that is usually lacking in even the precisest home theater gear.
The Season Pass feature has to be one of the best reasons to get a Tivo. It will record an entire season of your show even if the network moves it to a new night, or makes some of the episodes longer or shorter and with this unit's dual tuners you no longer have to choose between two shows airing at the same time, record them both!
One of the biggest improvements over the previous Series 2 box is the ethernet port on the back. I won't get too technical, but I'll just say that makes it a whole lot easier to connect your Tivo to your home network, which makes the box a lot more powerful.
Some quick examples of the

This is the best thing since indoor plumbing. It's very easy to use and works great even with over-the-air broadcasts (we don't have cable or satellite). Digital broadcasts are excellent, and while analog broadcasts aren't quite as good as our analog TV tuned them in, in a year those will be a thing of the past. In addition to recording what you want, it also records random stuff it thinks you might like. And if you forget to tell it to record something before going to work, you can log onto the TiVo web site and program it from there. Additionally, you can download the TiVo recordings to a Laptop and take them with you (great for trips with the kids). We did have to reboot it twice during the first two weeks (seemed to happen when reception was bad during stormy weather), but it's worked fine ever since then. Additionally, it does take a little technical ability to set it up. But after that it's great. If your considering getting TiVo I highly recommend going for it. TV watching will never

After years of hearing about TiVo and DVRs, I finally decided to jump on the bandwagon. I needed to record the new "Lost" episodes, and had no way to do it. Since you can't just buy a plain old VCR anymore, I did some research and found TiVo to be the best fit for me, and man was I right!
Setup was very easy right out of the box. It includes adapters for cable boxes and phone lines and all that good stuff, and explains it fairly simply. 15 minutes later, I was ready to go. Within the first day it had recorded 8 shows I really enjoy watching, and I hadn't told it a thing!
The "Thumbs Up" and "Thumbs Down" buttons are amazing. If you like something, you give it the thumbs up and it remembers the show, genre, actors, anything and records similar programs. Even my girlfriend (who is by no means technically adept) has fun with TiVo. It even records Oprah for her when she can't watch it, which she thinks is the greatest thing ever!
All in all, this thing is wonderful! It has truly

I love my Tivo. It works wonderful. I love that I can transfer any program I want to my PC. It is wonderful that I can record two programs at the same time. I would definitely recommend this product.
The only con I have is actually not with the Tivo itself but the computer program they chose to work with it. Roxio is not a great program for this. When trying to edit the programs, Roxio pauses alot. That is the only con that I have. Again, I LOVE MY TIVO.

I absolutely LOVE my Tivo box. It works flawlessly for me and never ceases to amaze me. For instance, today I downloaded a movie from Amazon on a day that I did not have anything stored up to watch and could not find anything live I wanted to watch. It took a while to download but at least I had something to watch without having to leave the house to get a movie.
I went home for Christmas and was amazed by the DirecTV HD DVR but only because it could record two satellite channels at once while I watched a recorded program. Other than that it was difficult to navigate the DVR counterpart. I missed my Tivo's ease of use. I found myself saying "I miss my Tivo" under my breath.

I like DVR and TIVO. You can record movies you can't watch at a certain time. Then you can come back and watch them when you have time. Pausing TV is the best part when you need to do something more important like make a martini or feed your pets. Buy TIVO, it a time saver.

Can't say anything negative about the product. Seemless, flawless. They thought of EVERYTHING when they put this product together. Buy it and you won't be able to live without it very quickly. The ONLY issue I have lies with the directions. This product is geared towards people who have a phone line or a wireless internet network in their homes. I have neither. So the WIRED network connection was my only route. Unfortunately the instructions for that were very vague. I hade to consult the online help forum several times. BUT, once I purchased a router, which was all I really needed, and the instructions never said that, I was up and running. The instructions said to use a wired network adapter. Then later in the instructions it said that they "highly recommend that I NOT use a network adapter with this model, then... went on to list several network adapters that were compatible with this model??? All in all, a small issue. I would still recommend this product.

I bought the Series 2 dual tuner for my mother, believing the hype about how easy Tivo was to use. The hype was dead on. She's put her VCR away and no longer has to juggle tapes to watch what she wants, when she wants to. With the dual tuners, she can watch and record at the same time, or record two shows at the same time--which is pretty important since usually her favorite shows are opposite one another on different channels.
Of course, you should consider buying the series 3 HD Tivo, since the HD will be mandatory for broadcast TV early in '08. You'll still be able to use the series 2, but you'll have to buy an analog adapter. If you're using cable, check with your cable provider to see how long you have.
Tivo is a great little system. It keeps it simple, and keeps it easy.

TiVo is an incredible value. The dual tuner system allows you to record one thing and watch another or record two things at once. Anyone searching for a TiVo should definitely make the dual tuner a priority.

Tivo was the best purchase I've made in a while. It's easy to learn and best of all, it learns what you like and what you might like. I enjoy being able to catch all the shows that I decide to record, plus enjoy the Tivo's suggestions for me. It's well worth the initial investment and is so easy to use and keep up on all your favorite programs.

this is the best purchase I have made for my home A/V setup. The Tivo is so easy to use and set up that it would be worth the purchase - even without the rebate deal! The only negative is a minor one - the wireless setup requires additioanl hardware that is not included. GO NOW AND GET ONE!

We love this product! We watch a lot more TV now and we can speed through commercials. The only problem is that we were unable to set it up to record on one channel while we were watching another.

Imagine a calm bedtime for your kids - no more screaming at them to get in bed before the Survivor Finale starts. No more VCR tapes that run out of room before the end of the show.
You won't watch MORE TV - you will just watch more efficiently. No more commercials - just fast forward right through them.
So easy to use - my 4 year olds can use it - and my 65 year old parents!

The dual tuners, large storage capacity, and show schedule are great. The menu interface and remote are not - it's not easy to find a show to watch/record at random days/times but it's easy to record and watch a show once it's been found and the remote isn't comfortable to hold and button mishits are easy to make.

I have two Tivo's. My first one was a gift which I was able to get a lifetime subscription for. It was only the single tuner recorder so when the dual tuner came out I had to have it. So now I have two running, one in the bedroom and the dual tuner in the family room. It's awesome to be able to pause one channel your watching and go to another channel and watch that one, then flip back and forth and not miss a thing. I have my dual Tivo set up wireless and that gives you even more features. You can check movie times, play games, and stream pictures and video that you have on your network, plus more.

Pro: Tivo has changed the way my family watches TV. Never again will you miss your shows, ever. Unless you run out of space, but 80 hrs.. no way! Its very convenient to watch shows on your time.. We are all busy at times in our lives. This very much helps to allow us to enjoy our free time watching our fav shows. LOVE IT. Instant replay of all sports games = priceless.
Con: However, It is a bit time-consuming to set up for the less techy people. And we needed to purchase an extra accessory to connect it to the internet.
All in all, a worthwhile investment.

TiVo Series2 (allowing you to record TWO programs simultaneously and up to 80 hours of space) is a major improvement on the original TiVo. My wife and I no longer fight over which show to record! Having the 80 hours is great, especially during fall when all the new shows debut. It allows us to record and keep the first few episodes of many shows, so that we can watch and compare and decide which shows we like.
Also, having the ability to record 2 programs is great for sports. I can record a baseball or football game for 3 or 4 hours and not worry that I'm tying up the TiVo because we can still record another show on the other tuner.
Lastly, you can make use of the 2nd tuner even when not recording, as you can watch on one tuner, then pause and switch to another tuner, and when you go back to the first you haven't missed anything. (This is also great for watching sports until the commercial, then finding something else to watch for a few minutes, but not worrying about

Because of my busy schedule, and constantly changing work hours, I had given up enjoying any TV series. I just missed too many of them to keep up. Now, I can keep up with the shows I enjoy. In fact, I loved my first Tivo so much, I bought another. Even though I don't consider myself a techno-expert, it was relatively easy to set up, and I found the Tivo interface to be fairly intuitive. After hearing a friend tell me his cable company DVR woes more than once, I'm even more pleased with my Tivos. His DVR would often just delete his entire playlist, or decide not to record his favorite shows at all. And, it didn't have search functions as nice as mine did. I recommend Tivo very highly. I even converted many of my family members to Tivo users and lovers! (And got reward points for doing so--another benefit.) My only regret is that I didn't overcome my reservations sooner, and jump on the Tivo bandwagon even earlier. I highly recommend this product.

Forget the cable company's DVR. The TiVo features give you soooo much more than the cable company DVR.
The Dual tuner is great, you can record 2 shows at the same time, and still watch one of your previously recorded programs.
If you connect your TiVo to your home network, you can transfer your programs to your PC for free. You can also transfer to a portable device (iPod, etc) if you purchase the software to convert the video file.
Once you've had TiVo, you'll never go back to the cable company DVR.

I was extremely skeptical when I first started researching DVR's. "I don't watch enough TV... I will have trouble setting it up... Not easy enough to use... etc." Well, this is, hands down, the BEST DVR on the market. People have told me about other DVRs from other manufacturers, and all of the competition fails in comparison in the following categories:
1. Interface_ Tivo has the easiest to use interface out there. I have given this as a gift to people who are extremely tech-illiterate, and they love it as much as I do
2. Setup_ Just plug it in, activate your account, and start recording. No gray area.
3. PRICE_ For this price, you will not find a more competitive product
4. Look and performance_ Product looks great, and I have yet to have any problems with mine (over a year, now)
Having Tivo has not made me watch more TV, I am just able to watch what I want to watch, when I want to watch it. A++ all the way around.

This Tivo Is the sweet! I record all my favorite NCAA and NFL Football games, and all my favorite show's. Plus I down load them to my lap top so I can whatch them any time I feel like it! I also love to check out what movies are starting at the move theater here in town, or just down load one from Amazon Unbox!

Once again Tivo comes through. I Love the dual turner Tivo. I can now record 2 programs at the same time without the need for any extra hook up. Tivo has an internal splitter which allows this feature. Even though I am a multiple Tivo owner It is nice to record 2 programs simultaneously on 1 Tivo. Before I had to have them recorded on different tivos and then wait to transfer the program or watch it in another room. Awesome product ! Can't live without my Tivo!

Love the ability to pause tv and get some stuff done, then come back and finish the program on MY time, fast forwarding over commercials is great, and TiVo's recording of shows it 'thinks' I may enjoy is a treat...BUT TiVo has its glitches (just check out the message board on TiVo.com) My major gripe, recording the WRONG channel. TiVo 'thinks' it's recording what I requested, but channel never changes. A software problem obviously. I also have a wireless TiVo connector to transfer recorded shows to my laptop using TiVo Desktop (a downloadable program from TiVo.com) This is WONDERFUL, when it works. But despite these small issues, life would be a little empty without TiVO.

Tivo is probably the best item that I ever purchased. I love being able to leave the house and know that I don't have to worry about missing my shows. It is very easy to program, I use the automatic record a lot. I want Tivo in all of our rooms. The best thing about it is that you can pause and when you return to the TV you can fast forward through all of the commercials until you get caught up. I would definately recommend Tivo to everyone.

If you've not yet graduated to HD and can't stand your digital cable provider's DVR manufacturer, then buy this item with confidence. If you haven't already learned by now, TiVo provides the best possible standalone solution for your custom DVR needs. With DirecTV having ditched the TiVo software in their DVR receivers, TiVo now remains my favorite DVR platform. The aesthetics are top notch, the fluidity is quick and seamless, and the downloadable interactive additions are the closest thing we'll see to true interactive television for some time to come. Forget all the PC media center hype or MAC set top box... get this puppy and watch your TV evolve. And while you're at it, it's time to cough up for HD.

The TiVo is a great step forward over VCR. It provides convinience like
- rewind live TV
- Automatically record your shows when they are on TV
- With dual tunner, watch one show and record another
However, the only part I do not like is the fact that you have to buy the service for between USD 13 to 19 per month. The service is essentially program guide. Which I find is exessive for program guide with should be available to you from other sources like Titan TV.

This is our second TiVo and we love it! It's so simple to use that with Kid Zone our 6-yr-old can find and watch her shows. TiVo has completely changed the way we watch TV so that we can hardly stand to watch TV without it. We were heavy VCR users, (4 in our home with tapes for almost every night) and we NEVER use the VCR anymore. There is always something to watch with 80 hours of recorded television of YOUR choice or TiVo suggestions based on your viewing choices. I like being able to switch tuners between 2 live shows and not miss a thing since I can go back to watch what's in the buffer. Also, it doesn't matter if your 2 favorite shows are on different channels in the same night.
The minor changes from the 40-hr single tuner series 2 are nice. Like it automatically records in medium quality, to save drive space, unless you specify differently. With the network connection, we love being able to record something on one TV and watch it on another. The processor in the 80-hr dual tuner

I believe Tivo has revolutionized the way we watch television. I purchased this one to replace my Series2 single tuner 40 hour Tivo. One thing I would recommend is to turn off your Tivo whenever you are not using it as it tends to heat up and will overheat your hard drive causing hard drive failure. My only complaint about Tivo is turning it to 'standby' is a rather lengthy process. It would be more convenient if there were an on/off switch on the front of the Tivo or on the remote control. The dual tuner is great, allowing you to tape two shows at a time! I love my Tivo!

If you're new to TiVo, you'll love this basic, standard unit. It has everything you'll love about TiVo without the high price tag of the other models. Only 80 hours, but for our uses it was great for the second TV in the home. With other units, you can record programs and move them to another unit for viewing on a different TV.

This product was our best decision ever from best buy. We absolutely love using it already. It took us a while to get it working right, but normally the installation would be a piece of cake. We have already got it recording stuff for us every week, and basically every night. Even when there are 2 things we want to be watching, we just record one and watch the other, its so awesome. Tivo is super easy to use too. We just watched the 4 or 5 instructinoal videos that are 2 minutes long each when we first got and we are basically pros now. I would definately recommend this product to anyone!

This is what all HD DVRs should strive for.
It marries all that is great about TiVo along with HD.
I have used this for 1 year and I have nothing but praise for it.
Many Season Passes and many live recordings and never a problem.
TiVo just gets it.

I recently upgraded to the digital tuner. The tivo is the best thing ever. The dual tuner is even better because now i never miss my shows and dont have to worry about which show can I watch. With the dual tuner you can record 2 shows or watch one and record another. THe tivo makes it easy to find your favorite movies or shows. Just put it in by the catogory, ie sports and then put in the first few titles of the show. And if you have a show such as "Heroes" why not try the season pass so you never miss it agaiin, even if they change days or times the tivo will catch it for you with the season pass. Also you can try wish list and find your favorite shows or movies. And if your on the road you can tivo via internet or even by your phone. The more tivo you have the more you save. We have 2 now and love them. Makes the perfect Christmas gift. And there so simple you'll learn in no time. There practilly self taught.

Our TiVo Unit has been great, It's much nicer than the VCR that we previously used. The 80 Gig Drive has been sufficient so far for our purposes. If you Really want to keep a program, there is a method of copying a program from TiVo storage to a VCR. You can download (rent or buy) movies from Amazon directly to your TiVo Unit (assuming you have it network connected). You can connect it to the network via WiFi. And the standard things that folks love, you can pause an ongoing show anytime you want to. It's pretty easy to flip through advertisements on recorded shows.
Oh yes, the ability to search for and find shows, to select shows by Actors, Directors, Type of Show (War Movies). The ability to setup "Season Passes" to record all shows in a series (first run or all).
And you can have it play music that exists on one of your home PC's and show pictures from the same source.
You can copy via your network shows from the Tivo Unit to your computers (Laptops) and view them there.

In the first place, TiVo rocks, and I've been using the service for more than 3 years. That said, this device is easy to use and the book they give you on how to set it up shows virtually every way that is possible so you don't have to guess. TiVo is great because they are always improving and adding new features which just show up on my network-connected TiVo, no work involved. And for anyone hesitant about the monthly service fee, I pay about that much for text messaging on my cell phone, and this does way more for tv than text messaging could ever do for my cell phone.
When I added this TiVo to my home, TiVo just got better. This is our first DVR and we are already devotees. I had a bit of a problem with the connections, largely because it had to fit into a small space in our entertainment center along with our VCR/DVD player, since we still have many tapes we need to watch and want to be able to play DVDs. The poster did not mention how to connect the VCR, so I disconnected some things that should have remained connected, and then had trouble with the coaxial cables. It took about an hour, but our furniture setup was largely to blame. There should be something on the poster to warn folks with VCRs or DVD players to go right to the appendix of the printed manual and skip the poster.
Once it was hooked up, though, it was a breeze to register and set up. We are still on a learning curve, but we were blown away when on the third day we had friends over and were recording two shows at once while at the same time showing a slide show of our vacation photos from off our two computers. The TIVO functionality works as advertised and as long as you pay attention to the instructions set-up will go smoothly. Be sure to buy yourself a nice long Ethernet cable if you are planning to hook it up to your router. (Unless you are one of those people who have the router right next to the tv - then buy a short one).
Three points that ding the rating on this Series 2:
1. The Dual Tuner is joke, you need to jump through a whole series of button clicks to get it to work. Not intuitive at all - you will find yourself reading the manual a number of times in the hopes of getting it right.
2. You can't hook your DVD player up to the TIVO! This means that if you only have one set of input jacks on your TV, that you will need to either buy and S-Cable for your DVD or continuously switch the DVD & TIVO back and forth. What is upsetting, is that the TIVO has input jacks, but doesn't allow the signal from the DVD to get routed through.
3. Finally we did get some hiccups in the volume when

I used to have a DVR from my cable company, which I had to get rid of when I moved. After settling in my new town, I decided to try out the TiVo on recommendation of a friend. It's amazing and a thousand times better than the cable company's DVR.
As someone who travels a great deal, a DVR is a virtual necessity if you watch any shows regularly. But the additional features of TiVo were fantastic surprises: it automatically records shows that I might like based on ones that I already watch; it lets me record shows by specifying favourite actors, keywords, or subject matter; it also lets me reprogram the DVR remotely over the web. These are all features that my cable company couldn't touch.
The additional features, like the ability to see Yahoo! weather and traffic, access online services, and extend through the TiVo SDK are icing on the cake.
All together, I'm very very impressed and won't go back to my cable company's offering ever.

I purchased the 80 hour dual tuner device in mid-December, shipped to my US address and then brought it to Canada. I found the installation to be quick and easy but was frustrated by the limited number of wireless adapters that had been certified with the TIVO. With no CD input one had no alternative but to use a TIVO tested device and aside from the actual TIVO adapter a number of the other recommended adapters were hard to find. Fortunately I found a D-Link adapter source after searching the net. I also found TIVO support inadequate when I wanted to ask a 'warm body' about the rebate. After dialing the initial 800 # and being redirected to what I hoped would be a real person I got a message saying that I could not access from my location (Canada ???). One final point, I find that TIVO are somewhat mysterious about some of their codes. Even after searching the user forums I was unable for example to find out what a VCM code was on the 3rd account screen and why it has only been updated

We're on our second unit. Functions well, but customer service will run you ragged if it breaks. Here's a review of the unit and our experience.
Pro:
-Our TV no longer owns us... we can go to dinner without rushing back home to catch "How I Met Your Mother" or "Two and a Half Men"
-Easy to use to play, pause, rewind... also easy to find and record shows
-Easy to program to record all upcoming shows
-Holds lots of programs (I think at one time we had fifty or so shows recorded on high-quality)
-No internet connection required
-Easy set-up, even on Christmas when we bought the unit (I was very impressed)
Con:
-Our Tivo now owns us
-Not obvious way to tell how much memory has been used
-Tivo forces mail (via Tivo) as well as updates that can change features and also some ads
-Customer service will take you through a grueling 2-hour troubleshooting process if you think your unit is broken... it required several call backs where I waited on hold a very long time. I was also hung up on
