If you need points to buy games, gamer pics, themes, or movies through marketplace, you will need Microsoft points.
This card for 1600 points is $20.00 worth of points, so you save a penny!
Most people buy their points online through the marketplace, but these make great gifts for the Xbox 360 Game fan who you are not quite sure what to buy them.

I bought one of these cards while it was slightly on-sale, making it a bit cheaper than buying points directly through Microsoft.
It's just a plain, plastic card with a portion that you scratch off to reveal a long key code that you enter into your XBL account.
A word of caution though. Don't scratch it too hard because you can actually scratch off the key code lettering, which is what happened to me. Luckily, I was still able to figure out what my code was and the card didn't go to waste.
With free shipping through my Amazon Prime account, this was easy enough and I saved a tiny bit of money.

This is a must have if your xbox 360 is connected to the internet. It is used in place of money on the xbox live marketplace. Their you can buy new skins for the xbox guide, HD and standard definition movies and TV shows. Movies include Superman Returns, The Departed, Blood Diamond, and Jackass. TV shows include Star Trek, The Colbert Report and South Park.
HD TV shows are 240 points(per episode), so you can get about 6 with this card. Standard definition are 160, so you can get 10 with this card.
A new release movie in HD is 480 points, so you can get 3 on the card. New release standard definition are 320, so about 5 movies worth on the card.
Classic movies are 360 for HD and 240 for standard. So 4 and 6 movies respectively.
You can also purchase points directly through xbox live, 1000 points costs $12.50.

Yes, you're basically trading real-world currency for Microsoft currency. If you keep the exchange rate in mind as you spend the MS Points, then you'll know how much you are spending.
Many of the items you can purchase (XBL Arcade games) are worth the money, but try before you buy: all games have a trial version.

First of all, it is too late for me. I already provided MS two credit cards through my console. And like the other reviewers have said, that is absolutely not a good idea. You see, I have been using my credit cards online for many years. So far, I have not had any difficulty because I have chosen the online merchants wisely. I always purchase from the likes of Amazon, J&R, Best Buy, and JCrew. Unfortunately, our friends over at Microsoft are probably not as efficient in their handling of your account. And they do not have the same level of commitment to the purchaser as say, Amazon has. I expect for that to improve, as the Marketplace continues to evolve and develop. Once MS realizes that they do not yet have a tight hold on the video game market as they do the software market, they will give more focus to customer service.
In short, what I am saying is to use a card like this for your dealings with XBox Live. Please don't get me wrong. I enjoy visiting the Marketplace. I regularly

Please don't buy this item and make the mistake I made:
Using Xbox Live, you can get 2000 points for $25.
But if you order this item here, 1600 points is $20. That's an equal ratio, right? It's $5 for each 400 points, right? Ahh, but wait...
First, this seller charges you $2.00 sales tax. Then standard shipping is an incredible $4.00 for EACH card - In other words, if you buy 5 cards together, you're still charged $20.00 for STANDARD shipping even though they all come in the same tiny box (because they're so small)!
Either way, it comes out to $26.00 for each card with 1600 lousy points, which is $6.50 for 400 points.
I was lazy, so learned the hard way. You do the math...

In order to activate the card, you must scratch off an area on the back of the card to reveal a 25 digit code. Unfortunately, when I scratched mine off, five of the numbers came off in addition to the protective coating, thus making the card unusable. I called Microsoft's Xbox support and after about 20 minutes of going back and forth with an agent and then the "floor supervisor" on it, I was informed there simply was nothing they could do for me. As an IT professional, I found their support agents to be quite unprofessional - a sharp contrast from their enterprise support which strives for 100% "very satisfied" customers.
Quite surprised by Microsoft's inability to help, I called Amazon's customer support, explained the situation and much to my surprise, they immediately provided a replacement card and apologized profusely for the pre-Christmas issue. The replacement was provided at no cost, a return label can be printed from their site, and they even expedited the shipping for me

When you buy MS points on your XBox 360, you must put in your credit card number. This isn't too much of a problem, except for the fact that once you put it in, you can't take it off! Seriously. Once you purchase something on your XBox 360, the credit card number and info stays on there and you CAN NOT remove it. I have contacted MS aobut it and they basically tell me there's nothing they can do. So, while the MS points idea is great, the cards like these are even better. Use these cards if you have a problem with your credit card info being forever stuck on your 360.

These reviews show up on the list for all four options, the one, three, and twelve month subscriptions, as well as the marketplace points. Carefully choose the "Size" above, which is where you choose between live "gold" months and marketplace points. Amazon just put all of these different products onto the same page, calling them different sizes.
There is of course a difference between months and points, as you can spend points without a gold subscription (just use the free included "silver" subscription with every XBOX 360), and you can certainly buy gold months without having to get any extra points. So one is not required for the other. The points get you extra content downloads, and the months get you online play time.
