This GPS was a huge improvement from my old Garmin 12. It is easy to navigate around the system. I haven't used it a whole lot yet but so far I really like it. The battery life is exceptional compared to my old GPS. I don't like the fact that it seems I have to recalibrate the electronic compass every once in a while for it to give me the right direction but other than that I don't have any other complaints.

Gave this to my hubby for his birthday. He takes it everywhere and is having a ball using it. Very trustworthy and one more reason not to stop and ask directions.

Wanted to map a round-the-world trip. The GPS 60 CSx never failed to get a satellite lock to within 50 feet, from an airline window seat. Worked from a jacket pocket high enough so the antenna could see out the window, with the shade up or down. Has a real antenna, not one hidden in the case. Does not work from an aisle seat. Took one local drive to learn how to use the track recorder and Mark functions, worked well with Garmin map software. Can output NMEA code for other map software. Set the track recorder to 6 minute interval, had no overflow problems. Only drawback is that it doesn't provide GPS altitude, just barometric pressure. But that's enough to tell when the plane took off and landed. Aviation models provide altitude but are considerably more expensive. Goes through a pair of AA batteries in 15K miles of flight. The receiver doesn't interfere with aircraft navigation, confirmed by the captain of one of the flights, but some airlines have a blanket ban on electronic devices.

I bought my 60CSx about 18 months ago after rave reviews from friends who are in Iraq and Afghanistan talking about how great the 60CSx is. I can say without reservation that this is the finest piece of travel gear I have. The SirfIII chipset means quick signal aquisitions, so even when my cell phone's GPS is struggling to get a signal, I've got one and am off to the races. When out and about in a foreign country, I'll mark my tracks so I can always find my way back home. It's quick and holds signal in urban environments (Chicago's the land of highrises) and the wilderness (I used this while on day hikes in Mongolia.) The GPS itself isn't intiutive, and you really need to sit down with a manual (or rent GARMIN GPSMAP 60C; 60CS; 60CX; 60CSx DVD INSTRUCTION GUIDE from Netflix). Once you sit down with it for a good 30 minutes, you get the hang of it rather easily. I also updated my GPS with a MicroSD card to have TOPO maps on it along with Garmin's North America maps. It's not as great

I have had my 60 for a couple of years and geocache with it. I have dropped it a few times but Last night I stopped to get my mail and as I got out of my car my 60 fell off my belt to the ground and then into a storm drain. I had to leave it there all night as I was going to work. This AM I went to the storm drain and opened the cover and retrieved my 60. I turned it on and its still works great !!! . Garmin makes good stuff!!!!!!

This is the best GPS unit I've ever owned, and I've owned a few over the years starting back in 1994 with the Magellan Trailblazer. Last year I decided to step up to a mapping unit with the Magellan Triton 500. It was a piece of garbage. The compass spun around like I was in the Bermuda Triangle. That and the fact that it kept crashing and giving me the Windows screen of death. Total garbage for an instrument that is supposed to help keep you alive in the great outdoors. I went back to using a Garmin GPS III. It didn't crash but it was a bit rudimentary compared to the color mapping units. Last week I decided to invest in the Garmin 60CSx. I received it in the mail this morning and it works great! I've already downloaded free topo and street maps for my state ([...]) and installed it in the unit on the included 256 MB card via the Mac software that was free from their web site. I've also loaded about 20 geocaches via one click of a button while the unit was plugged into my MacBook

I chose this GPS for its ability to use customized maps and because it consistently received good reviews. It is my first GPS and I expected it would take time to learn how to use all of the features. Although the user manual that comes with the unit will help you get started, for me it was not sufficient. Unless you are already an expert GPS user I recommend that you get some additional books that discuss how to use one. Here are the best ones that I have found: GPS Made Easy (GPS Made Easy: Using Global Positioning Systems in the Outdoors) This book is especially useful because authors use a 60CSX to explain many GPS features, and there are many screen shots. It also presents a number of scenarios that explain how you would use the GPS in the field. Basic Essentials Using GPS, 2nd (Basic Essentials Series) This book also has some good scenarios for using the GPS in the field. GPS For Dummies (For Dummies (Computer/Tech)) Lists good places for downloading maps By far, learning

Nice looking unit, everything seems to work, GPS, compass, altimiter, but it does not come with any maps, the map page is blank. Of course you can buy them for $100 from Garmin. All the advertisements say this unit comes with a base map, don't believe it. I plan to return this for false advertising.

Pros: -Incredibly accurate on open spaces. -International Maps are easy to find for free. -Compatible with Macintosh computers. -The screen is readable in sunlight. Cons: -Does not accept Geocahing descriptions. Minimal info is shown. -Garmin Topo maps are way overpriced, over $100 each! -No satellite imagery available at all. -Extraodinarily long learning curve. No good tutorials anyhwere. -Hard to use even with a tutorial. -Lousy interface design, clearly not an Apple product. -Limited proximity alarm, 0.2 miles minimum, why? -Full of arbitrary limits on maps, tracks, waypoint, etc. Conclusion: To me the most important features are the accuracy, the battery life and the presence of a bright screen, my 60Csx performs very well in those areas. I also have a DeLorme PN-40, which has an even brighter screen and free maps but regretfully is not as accurate as the 60Csx. It is a small difference but if you are a geocacher, it matters. Warning: The newer Garming models (Oregon, etc) with

This is a great GPS. When placing a cache, the averaging capability is astounding. Have had many comments on how accurate my co-ords are. Works much better than my Megellan.

I recently had my Vista HCx stolen and needed a replacement. The 60 CSx seems to be the same, although I did notice that the new unit roamed while standing still, while the Vista didn't seem to do that. Maybe it's because i can see the screen that I'm noticing it now. Anyway, the screen is much easier to see but it doesn't get a bright as the Vista. It's like it has the same amount of available light on both units only the light is spread over a larger distance therefore not as bright on the 60CSx. I'm happy with the unit just like i was with the Vista HCx.

OK, Lets see where do I start, as for the Garmin GPSMAP 60CSX, Its an amazing specialized tool that can surely not only save the day, but get you out of so many burdens, as well by having it all inside of it simply by having added a North America NT navigator not only will it additionally act as an amazing map and relocator in finding back your tracks, but additionally will navigate you through either highways, city streets and back roads for getting anywhere in any manner you may like. It can additionally serve as a vacation saver for both domestic as well as also international whether it be Asia, or Europe it can obsolutely navigate you anywhere period, if you only simply add the additional maps and or navigational softwares for where ever you may ever need to go. You can also optionally add a larger 2 Gig memory card so that you can even keep everything on it so no matter where you may ever need to end up you shall always be properly covered. Additionally its even water resist should

I purchased this gps at suggestion of a freind.I have had an etrex for years that I never use because it never picks up signal in heavy wood cover. The 60csx never has lost signal even when I have no cell phone service. I use it hunting and riding 4-wheelers. It is alot more user freindly than the etrex also. I think this a great unit and have had zero trouble with it. Would highly reccomend.

I wanted a GPSr for hiking and geocaching. I also considered the Garmin Oregon 400T and the Delorme PN-40. The Oregon is touchscreen like my Garmin Zumo (car/motorcylce) The Delorme costs less than both. I passesd on those 2 after much research as they both have issues which need to be resolved before I'd get one. So I settled on the tried and true 60CSx and do not regret it. It is accurate, has a great visible screen and long life battery's. The main reason I didn't get the Oregon is the much reported dim screen. The Delorme has quality issues and not as easy to learn to use. The 60CSx is very easy to learn. The Zumo was my first GPSr and couldn't be easier to use, it also doesn't offer all of the functions of the 60CSx. The 60CSx comes with a very detailed user manual and it will show you all of the functions of which there are many.
I don't mind that the 60CSx is not paperless for Geocaching, being reliable, bright screen and long battery life is more important to me. I keep track of

I'm very pleased with the product. It works as advertised. I would encourage anyone looking for maps to load onto this to do a search for "gpsfiledepot". There are many excellent, free maps available as well as instructions for making your own custom maps. Maps are both Mac and Windows compatible.

Most of my review is based on receiving and using this GPSmap 60CSx this month (April 2009). I received it on time as Amazon stated. It started right out of the box and locked on to five satellites inside of my home. It locks on to as many as twelve satellites outside. It takes only a couple of minutes in most cases.
The basic map softeware loaded in the unit is mostly useless. I added TOPO U.S. 2008 to it and made it functional. I also changed the memory card to a 2GB card because I believe that I need to space. Unfortunately, the instructions for downloading individual maps were not that clear and I had to spend a very long time on Garmin's Web Page to search out how to do this. Other than this annoyance the book contains a lot of information. The map areas are not that large so I had to download many, many, maps to get from one place to another. I will probably have to add the Cities maps to this in order to get full functionality.
I traveled to the southwest to go to ZION, Bryce and

As a geo cacher, i bought this to use inside my vehicle and outside. Before i owned the Magellan Explorist 500. It worked great, did not buy new so it died. But i was looking for something just like it.

The Garmin 60CSX did NOT come with a decent base map, only had major highways, ONLY. They wanted an extra $100 for maps. The backlight had to be reset every time you turned the gps on. The images werent contrasted enough so the light had to constantly be turned on.

When we were looking for a local geo cache we came close, but could not find the immediate direction it was facing due to the compass. You have to atleast be going 5mph to use the compass. Otherwise it does not point anywhere while on foot.

This device wants you to save everything including the found caches on its internal memory. Could not figure out how to save to the Micro SD card.

For all the hype its getting just like the new Colorado, i would not recommend if you want to geo cache. I recommend the Magellian

I purchased the GPSMAP 60SCx almost 2 years ago and it has not disappointed me yet. I bought it for hiking and as a GPS on my motorcycle (with handlebar mount) and I think it handles both applications marvelously. It has traveled cross country on my bike, flown from Massachusetts to Hawaii (yes, it works in an airplane), and used for every vacation trip we have taken since the summer of 2007.

I originally purchased it with a 2gb memory chip (when memory was much more expensive) because I knew the 64mb chip would not cut it for my map use and I did not want to keep loading and unloading maps. The entire US/Canada mapset uses just about 950mb. So that gave me plenty of extra space for waypoints, tracks and routes. I don't think I ever used more than about 65% of the entire SD memory capacity.

Recently, I began to wonder what the limitation on the SD memory was and because memory is so cheap, I tried an 8Gb chip ($15). I was told that 2Gb was the limit but not so. The Card Info option

This is a 5-star product when it works. But as is described in many places on the internet, it shuts off if there is vibration. For me, this means I cannot use it while skiing, because as soon as I start doing moguls, it shuts off.

I described the problem to Garmin, and they asked me to return it to them. But then they sent the same unit back to me saying everything is normal with it.

I found a do-it-yourself repair described on the internet. You can crack open the 60CSX case and apply dielectric (conductive) grease to the electrical connection that is known to be the failure point. Sure enough, this fixed the problem (but probably voided the warranty), though now after 9 months of using the device, the problem has returned. If you buy this unit, be sure to hunt down the instructions for applying conductive grease. There are lots of helpful instructions and photos on the web.

I have owned a Garmin 60CSX for the past 3 years. It's a great GPS and well worth the money. I use it every day Geocaching and it works great. If you need cache information you should look at the Garmin Colorado or Oregon. But, when it comes to GPSs for use off road on the trail this one is the best you can get. It's easy to use (I've never read the manual), the color is great, it works well in heavy tree cover, in gorges, inside and even in aircraft at 38,000ft. It's very accurate!! I have dropped mine about 10times and you couldn't even tell. It's been submerged while kayaking a few times and it still works well. The electronic compass works really well. The road navigation works fairly good for being an outdoors GPS. It routes well and can do turn by turn navigating. If you want one for your car go and purchase one made for cars. This is a great backup or when your in someones car without anything. The USB downloads are easy to use. The updates from Garmin have been great. If you're

I bought the GPS60CSx after doing some research and based on the recommendation of a friend. Let me say that I was not disappointed. I use this GPS when I ride the mountain bike trails, as well as ATV riding. The reason that I gave it 4 stars, is the available of software for Macs. I had to go to Garmin's site and download software, as it was not included out of the box.

All in all, this is a great unit that you can track your routes and vital stats. If you like, you can upload them to sites like Google Maps and Map My Ride. Sorry that this is not too in depth, but what else can I say that the other reviewers haven't already.

This is the my third handheld gps unit and without a doubt it's the best I have used or seen on the market to date. I primarily use it for recording fishing spots and water-related waypoints. I also use it to download my many other personal POI files. I'm extremely pleased with the unit's overall performance and would highly recommend it to anyone. On the con side, to fully take advantage of the unit's extended features you must purchase additional expensive mapping software. It's fast when acquiring-refreshing, accurate and reliable and integrates nicely with related Garmin Mapsource products.

If you have lots of time to learn a fairly complex GPS unit then this one should be considered. It takes some time to navigate through the marginally user friendly features. It is not suitable as a daily driver aid because of the lengthy inputs. If you are into going places that are remote and you want to insure you can get back out then this will do the job. I have been lost , at night, on dirt roads, with no signage but the breadcrumb trailmarking feature got me out of some scary places even as the area was obscured by smoke from a to close for comfort forest fire that was nearby.

I bought it as I was traveling to Croatia and wanted a rugged, waterproof GPS.

I discovered after buying it that the maps were very expensive ($300). And Garmin does all it can to prevent open source mapping applications from accessing the internals of their devices. So I used it without a map.

It would at least help me get back to my hotel every night.

The warranty on the unit is only 1 year. This is absurdly short for a premium priced product.

The keypad failed on my unit shortly after the warranty expired. After a 25 minute wait on the phone for customer service (that's service?) the woman on the phone informed me that the cost to swap my unit for a functional gps would be $150!!!!!

That is WAY more than half the amount I payed for the the unit in the first place.

I took meticulous care of this GPS. For example, the plastic is still attached to the LCD screen to prevent scratches! Yet it failed.

I have never owned a Garmin product before and am now very dubious about their

Pros: Works well as a GPS. Comparable features to other handheld GPS's I have owned.
Cons: VERY short warranty - only 1 year. This is outrageous for a premium priced product.

OK, OK, I'm not going to talk about all the incredible features with this GPS. The last 300 or so reviews did that plenty. I am only going to talk about the last week and what I went through trying to find the "Pefect" GPS for me. I have been using a Magelleon Meridium Platnium for 6 years. It has been a wonderful GPS, but it is time to upgrade and get up to date features. Perhaps I can save someone some time and frustration. Over the past six days, I have bought and returned 4 seperate GPS units, a Magelleon 2000 Triton, a Garmin Colorado, a Bushnell Onix 400 and a Delorme PN20. The Magelleon locked-up for good after two minutes, done, kapoot. The Delorme had cool maps and aerial imagry, but the "area calculation" feature that they advertise, (and that I need for work) is not usable on the unit, in the field. It does me no good to require a laptop computer and tons of software to do something a handheld GPS should be able to do alone. Also, the buttons felt a bit cheap on the

My friend told me about the Garmin GPSMap 60CSx 2.6-Inch Mapping Handheld GPS. I have been checking many models and found that this was the easiest and the best for my latest fun activity of geocaching. My Grandsons 9 and 11 are learning at the same time I am and we are having a great time exploring new places, getting exercise, and finding hidden treasures.
The color monitor is easy to see and distance and direction formats can be understood by beginning users. A USB cord is provided to connect to the USB port on a computer. This allows downloading from the PC to the GPS. The only thing that could be considered a minus is the lack of voice sound which would be useful when traveling by vehicle.

It is a great GPS device for anyone who loves outdoor activities. I use it for hiking and biking purposes. With the right kind of maps you can use it for navigation in the cities also. It comes with only a base map. Base map is a very low resolution map. When you are buying this device you might want to consider buying a set of maps that suits your needs. Garmin makes several maps. If you are an outdoor-sy person you might want to try out TOPO maps from Garmin. They have a good TOPO maps for all of US. Also, they have higher resolution maps for national parks and some state parks. City Navigation maps that Garmin sells would be ideal for using this device in your car. It is not as good as some of those other Garmin GPS units that are designed for navigation in cities but will do the job. One of the best things about this unit is the speed with which it can catch the satellites and get a fix on your position. On a clear day, it would get a fix in a couple of seconds after you turn the device

I have had my unit for only a month and it works extremely well. It picks up 8 to 12 satellites and is accurate to about 11 feet. I have down loaded tracks and waypoints to aerial photos using some free software and they are dead on. I even get excellent results with the GPS sitting in the front seat of the car. I use it professionally to map forestry and other projects. It works great. I have not tried the navigation or other features so I can't comment on them.

The only down side is that I need to use third party software to down load tracks so that I can use them in my GIS programs. (ArcView and Manifold). Garmin should provide this with the package. It would make life easier and probably increase their sales to professionals. If you need the free software, go to the web and seach MSDNR Garmin (Minnisota Department of Natural Resources). Download the program and read the help file. It is not too complicated and works just fine.

This is a good unit. It performs great, locks quickly, almost too many features. But a real downer lies in the display of Garmin's topo map. All the ads you see both on Garmin's site, Even the operation materials shipped with, and every where else show a good contrasting yellow background, Beware that it isn't, and they know it is misrepresented and don't care. I know this as I have contacted them with a promise to get back to me in a couple of days. That was over 2 weeks ago. The back ground is a tan with brown street level roads. Really poor contrast and very difficult to see at times. Certainly leaves you in the lurch, since you can only use their maps.

Hubby is a Geo Cacher and LOVES his Christmas present. We have been looking for a while for a hand held that also does turn by turn in a car. We don't need turn by turn very often so we needed it more for Geo Caching. It is fabulous! There is a Geo Caching feature that is very user friendly. HIGHLY recommend this unit. It turns on and finds the satellites so quickly...we thought it was messing up at first!

I am a USMC grunt and have recently returned from Iraq. I brought a Garmin GPSMap 60CSx with me, and needless to say, I have put this unit through it's paces. I believe my experience may be useful to others considering purchasing a rugged, outdoor GPS unit.

First off, the 60CSx is an extremely rugged unit. I have put this unit through more than 200 combat patrols, 130+ degree weather and freezing cold temperatures. It has been dropped, submerged in water, knocked, covered in mud, and crushed against my gear innumerable times. The only evidence from all this wear and tear is that the text on the "QUIT" and "ENTR" keys have worn off, which is more from me taking it in and out of its pouch over and over than a poor design of the unit. Throughout all this abuse, it has performed extremely well. When I wento to Iraq, I brought a Magellan Explorist unit with me as well. The screen cracked on our third patrol, rendering the unit worthless. I am still using my Garmin.

The 60CSx has a fast

This was a gift for my husband ... originally torn between car GPS and this. Ended up making the right decision ... takes a bit longer to get into with loading the maps and all than a car GPS which already come pre-loaded, but after a short learning curve, he loves it and has used it for hiking, fishing AND driving. Can't ask for a more well rounded GPS. Be careful in purchase of friction mount ... they are a different size for these hand-held GPS. Great price and quick delivery!

This new model Garmin GPS has incredible reception. It picks up satellites even inside my house. Display is nice and the buttons are easy to use. Only downside is that the layers of menus are sometimes hard to find the exact feature you are looking for. Still a great unit for the price.

Earlier in the summer I made the plunge and purchased a hand held GPS unit. I researched for a couple of weeks. Using the internet of course and also asking friends who are or were familiar with units as civilians, law enforcement as well as a couple of former soldiers. Garmin was the brand that most of the guys came up with. Various units were discuss and after considerable time weighing the advantages and disadvantages of various models I made my decision. I purchased a Garmin 60csx. Once I had the unit I dove into the manual to learn the nuances of the device. GPS units are pretty amazing technology. I even delved into the different satellites that are in orbit and how they work.

Here's some advice on buying a unit. First you need to ask yourself these questions.

1. What do you want the device for? Do you only need a car unit? Do you plan to do anything off-road (hiking, camping, mountain biking, trail running) etc... Probably the most important consideration.
2. What's your

My first GPS. I waited, in part, for Macintosh support. I live in the Redwoods, and this GPS has no problem in tall, dense forests, something I was looking for in a GPS, or inside my car without an external antenna. It's also very readable in sunlight. I found this unit fairly intuitive, after reading about how technically difficult it is to learn to use a GPS. I also purchased Garmin Topo 2008. Using the Garmin map converter for Macintosh on a friend's pc, transferring the file to my Macintosh and then to the GPS was much easier than I feared. Garmin has a ways to go before their software is complete, but I'm very thankful for this meager beginning. I'm very pleased with my purchase.

I'd give the GPSMAP-60 CSX five stars for ease of use (especially after taking an REI outdoor course in its use prior to the purchase) and its capabilies. Great for Geocaching or plotting a route of where you have been---can be very useful if you want to make an accurate map, or just to return.
Probably not too useful for navigation in a moving auto. Get the on-dash versions for that job.
I'm new at GPS so I'd get another recommendation or two, but as my first experience with a hand-held, I'm very satisfied. Overstock's sales are driving everyone's prices down too--good!

I am new to GPS handhelds and so far, I haven't had a great deal of luck. Regarding functions of this unit; I haven't yet used it in the field due to problems with two separate units having dead pixels (the first unit had one at the top of the screen and the second one had one in the middle).

The build quality aside, I was quite satisfied with the features and overall function of this GPS. As mentioned, I am new to GPS handhelds and I found the 60CSx easy to navigate and to figure out the basics of its use. I was especially impressed with the speed at which it acquired a signal and the speed with which it drew its basemaps.

Overall, however, I only give this unit a 2 stars due to having 2 separate units with a screen problem. Something at this price point should have better quality control than this.

I have owned a lot of hand held GPS units in the past 15 years, starting with Trimble, Nexus, Magellan and many Garmin units. I used these for recreation but wanted to use them for search and rescue. I am a paid Captain with a fire department in Western North Carolina that does lots of searches in the Blue Ridge Mountains. Because of our steep, deep and heavily vegetated terrain, no GPS has been more than another navigation aid to confirm basic map and compass locations. (Don't get me started on how important map and compass skills are; you simply have to have them.)
That was true until I spent the $300.00 for a Garmin 60 CSx. This unit works like a charm and so far I have never lost a signal for more than two minutes when on foot. I can throw this unit in my pack or side pocket of my pants and still pull in 6-9 satellites, for that matter I receive 5-6 in my office at the fire department!
Add a 1GB memory card and the 1:100,000 topo maps from Map Source and the GPS is a great tool for

I used to have a Garmin Legend, replaced it with a Garmin Vista C and finally with this unit. It is really a great design and provides outstanding functionality. I use it for geocaching and traveling around the US on business. Strange cities are not a problem - the City Select software is quite up to date and if you install a 2GB Micro SD chip, you can load the entire US and Canada map database into the unit - No more loading grids!!! The accuracy of the handheld is frequently in the single digits which is amazing considering overhead trees and obstructions. I fully recommend this unit even for people who do not geocache (You should really try it!!!) I love the transportability as I use it in airplanes (yeah - it works great in planes) and rental cars! This is probably one of the best traveling companions a person could ask for! Get the travel accesory kit from Garmin. It contains a beanbag car mount, 12 volt power cord and the City Select mapping software. If you want GPS, this

I recently purchased this item under the impression that it is a top notch product. While it is impressive in the number of features, the signal strength is often weaker than many other reviewers have noted. Perhaps this is driven by the fact I live in Germany, however, I cannot imagine that is the case. Additionally, the software (City Navigator v.9) has given me nothing but problems (will not load properly), thus I have been unable to fully utilise this product. Customer service is nothing short of horrible with extended wait times and people who don't really seem to understand the problem. If you intend to buy this unit, I would be tempted to order the SD card already loaded with the software, despite the fact it is rumored to be a slightly scaled down version of the DVD. If you really want a GPS unit for basic use, consider a cheaper scaled down model.

I really like the Garmin gps and I would recommend it to anyone. The book is a bit thick but it does explain it every well and It has come in handy. The screen is very clear and just the right size to carry. The unit is light enough to carry all day and not be a bother.

Great product.
The big CON is the Garmin policies about their databases and their _very_ poor support. I bought a microSD City Navigator and I can't register it (the site doesn't allow it) and I can't backup it (copying the files doesn't work). The Garmin support gave me at least 10 different answers about this but no solution for the problem. If I lose the chip or it gets damaged (as happened a few months ago with another chip) I will have nothing. Also _very_ bad is the fact that you can not update any info in the card. And there are many small errors (things are constantly changing!).
- The compass and altimeter have to be calibrated to be reliable.
- The unit is not water proof and doesn't float
If you're not considering using Garmin maps/cityNavigators, it's a very good choice. If you need Garmin's maps/cityNavigators, prepare youself to be frustated with very bad support and many small errors that you can not fix.

Awesome product. Very happy with the screen size (it's larger than my buddies Etrex Vista but the overall dimensions are quite similar.) SIRF chipset kept me locked on even in the fairly dense pines of northern Arizona during last weeks camping/geocaching trip. Most times it was locked on 9 or 10 satellites. My only complaint is one I new about going in...this is a 'two handed' unit as the navigation buttons are located way at the bottom. The larger screen size more than makes up for this imo, I only mention it because I need a reason to not give it 5 stars, that to me would mean it's perfect and few things are.

Other notes: Know what you are buying! Don't be shocked that it doesn't come pre-loaded with City Navigator like most car based units. Know that you must use Garmin Topo software if you want to load (and of course view) topo maps on your gps. Know that the barometric altimeter is affected by pressure, therefore having the car windows up/down or blower running will affect

This is my third GPS receiver. The first had no maps, and the second had very limited map memory. This unit can now use the new 4GB MicroSD card. Wow! The memory card stores more than just maps. It can be setup to endlessly record all tracks while the unit is on, even after the regular track space fills up. These track files can be downloaded, viewed and edited with Map Source, and uploaded to the unit if needed as saved tracks. The memory card can also store millions of custom points of interest which function like waypoints, but must be added or deleted using Garmins free POI Loader software.

I love how quickly this thing picks up the satellites and is great in woods with heavy cover. I use it for Geocaching and the tools that are built in make it really easy to manage my caches.

I would highly recommend this GPS.

I got this GPS to replace an older GPS III+ and it has performed great so far. I have used it in a vehicle without external ant., in heavy timber and deep canyons, and in town and always had a good 3d position fix. Garmin's Topo software leaves a bit to be desired but is the only software that can add more map detail in the GPS itself. I highly recommend to anyone looking for a rugged and high performance GPS.

I use this GPS device for off and on road use. I jeep in very remote areas. The 60CSx is very accurate and aquires satellites quickly. Reception is great in mountain terrain. Tracking and routing are very accurate and handy when hiking. Its great to have it in my Jeep from home, on the trail, and then click to my belt and take a hike. Very nice. Plenty of memory for storing trips, runs, and hikes. I bought the City Navigator North America software with the unit. Awesome for planning trips. My wife loves this thing when traveling, I can't get it out of her hands. A simple sinc between software and GPS unit and I'm good to go. Finding locations/places/addresses is a little cumbersome using the GPS device, but what do you expect from a compact hand held unit? Its nice to be able to look up this information on the fly when traveling like gas stations, hotels, banks etc.. MAKE SURE TO UPGRADE THE MEMORY TO 1GIG. My handheld now has all my North America Maps, possibly excluding New York City

I have a GPSMAP 60CS by which I live or die, and now this 60CSx. Bottom line: Much better reception, and the MiniSD card lets it hold the whole US worth of road maps and several states worth of Topo maps. I believe these alone make it worth doing the upgrade. Other than that, it has about the same "look and feel" so if you can use the 60CS, you'll be fluent with the 60CSx in about 30 seconds.

A few minor gripes:
1. Mapquest is quite slow to process 2GB worth of maps. Maybe an hour just to compute the index. I guess they need to improve it to scale its performance to the new generation of Garmin GPS units.
2. Rate of climb still only has feet/minute and various metric scales. For hiking it really really needs feet/hour. Seems like this would be an easy firmware upgrade (Garmin, are you listening??)
3. You still can't tell the altimeter to use GPS altitude, rather than barometric pressure. This is inconvenient when using the GPS in a pressurized aircraft cabin, because you can't get

The 60CSx is a very sophisticated GPS that, while its looks may be intimidating to the novice, is fairly easy to learn. This due in a large part to the manual that comes with the unit. Garmin does a very good job of walking a first time user through the basics of setting up the GPS, learning basic navigation with the unit and letting you know how to change features to your liking. If you previously owned another Garmin with mapping capabilities, you will only need to adjust to where the control buttons are as the menu structure is very similar to the rest of the series. In addition to the manual, the 60CSx comes with a lanyard, a USB cable to connect the GPS to a computer and Trip and Waypoint manager, the software that enables you to pass information between your computer and the GPS.

The display screen is nicely sized for a handheld GPS. With the proper maps, more on that shortly, this will make a very good vehicle navigation aid as well as a hiking / geocaching unit. The 60CSx features

Excellent product, although somewhat pricey. I work for a startup requiring extensive travel to out of the way locations worldwide. Very easy to operate.
We have placed locations around the world on our corporate servers, so that all will access to client locations. This also will work in countries where maps are not available. The first person in the country maps out locations and routes and uploads to the server. Those that follow have an easy time downloading and making their way to the client.
Battery life is average, but as advertised.
I travel in mountainous central Washington and have always gotten a signal, even in heavy snow and rainy conditions.
This is great addition to my travel kit and I would recommend to anyone that is serious about having this capability in a small, efficient form factor.
Unit arrived in two days with standard shipping from Amazon direct.
One thing that would make this unit perfect would be a complete package including the Garmin travel kit in a bundled

I recently upgraded to the Garmin GPSmap 60CSx from the Garmin GPSmap 76s. I did quite a lot of navigating with the old unit, and found it to be an outstanding GPS unit; but like all GPS users, I tired of losing accuracy or even complete sat signal under heavy forest canopy and the like. In fact, that is the sole reason that I upgraded. The color screen is an added bonus, as it is much easier to read in harsh sunlight. I have yet to encounter a situation where I have lost sat signal with this unit. With the old unit, I couldn't get a single sat locked in when inside my home. Now I can lock on at least eight and get pinpoint accuracy, which is useful when searching for the car keys. Seriously, the sensitivity of the new chip set translates to more accurate sat geometry and in turn, better accuracy. If you live in a place without trees or canyons, you probably don't need this. If you frequently find yourself in the midst of either, this unit really is worth the money. Another nice upgrade

No matter what you are into this unit delivers. I use it for hunting, fishing and auto navigation. With its electronic compass it works extremely well in the woods, even in heavy cover. Load the lakemaster data card into it and get extremely well detailed maps of your fishing spots. Put the city navigator maps in it and get turn by turn directions with auto routing and re-routing on missed turns. Geocache friendly. There simply is not a handheld on the market with all these capabilities. Did I mention the unit locks on to satellites in extremely dense cover? I can turn this on in my house in my basement sitting 6 feet away from the window and it locks on. Truly well worth the investment. I have had mine a year now with no troubles. I have tried the others and they do not hold a candle to this unit.

I have to say that I have been quite happy with the performance of this GPS device. It does what it says it does - this is great for a hiker, or biker. I do a lot of mountain biking here in New England and I was afraid that the device would not work well under all the tree cover. But needless to say I was quite impressed with its performance. Accuracy is not great but not bad either - currently the best accuracy range has been about 18 feet. It all depends on the terrain and tree cover at the location. Even though this device was never intended for professional use it does the job for the average joe. Its rugged construction and light weight makes it a real good choice for people that love to venture out in the wilderness. Considering that this probably would be the last thing you would want to break - out in the woods! I only have a few gripes: 1. the battery life is not as long as I expected - but then again I am using the map a lot - I am suprised that Garmin did not offer a high power

I have had this unit for about two weeks. At first it tended to drift, get a bad signal and drift. I discovered something very interesting about the use of this unit. Hold this unit at a 45-90 degree angel and the reception improves greatly. Now it gets nine foot accuracy all the time, when I average a position I can get it to improve instead of jumping around. Apparently (according to my father who was an Electronic Warfare specialist) antennae can be polorized based on the expected use, some for holding level others like this one get a better reading pointed up. In the Garmin manual it actually says this. My father says you should get somewhere around 50% better accuracy then when it is missaligned. I have found this to be true. Now I get excellent fast locks and dead on bearing. Personaly I think this unit can get better then +/- 3 meters in good conditions. I have never had this unit get worse then 45 feet +/- when I could get a lock. I think most bad reviews are based the understandable

I would not trust the 60CSx while hiking!

Both of my 60CSx units were initially within Garmin's +/- 45 ft accuracy specification. After just one week of daily usage the first 60CSx lost sensitivity and could not lock on to more than 4 satellites. Position errors were typically +/- 200 ft as viewed on the Satellite page. This error would also show as erratic tracks when viewed on the Map page. Using the WAAS feature did not improve its performance. Large Trip Computer errors would build up when the unit was stationary.

The replacement 60CSx held to Garmin's +/- 45 accuracy for 7 weeks. It could decode and track 8 to 10 satellites. Suddenly, position accuracy degraded to over +/- 200 ft. This unit could lock on to 6 satellites. The WAAS feature did not improve accuracy or reduce display noise. When held in one position in my back yard for 1.26 hours in Tigard, Oregon the Trip computer showed the following drift: 1.34 miles, 23 minutes of moving time, maximum speed 7.7 mph, moving average

I bought this as a tool mainly to measure property, but my wife and I have quickly found it indispensible for travel. (1) It is very easy to use. Both I (a gadget nut) and my wife (gadget averse) found it intuitive and mastered it on our first trip. (2) If you buy the software, AND you buy a one-GB smart card for it (it comes with a small smart card), you can load detail maps of over half of North American into it AND upload found waypoints (that campsite up on the lake) back to your maps on your computer. That is plenty for most of our driving trips. (3) With the included Waypoint software and with the additional mapping software, computer synchronization is a breeze -- at least if you have Windows XP Pro. This is important because it is so easy to lay out a route with multiple waypoints using your computer. (4) It finds satellites quickly and reliably in deep woods and even in most residential buildings. (5) While it is ideal for using in hiking, biking, etc., it does make a decent automobile

Let me start by saying there is no perfect GPS. I don't care whether you go Garmin, Lowrance, or Magellan, none of them will be perfect. But the 60CSx comes close enough to make me one happy user. I use it while driving as well as for geocaching and hiking in the woods. I use City Navigator North America NT version 8 for street navigation, and it works very well. The basemap that comes with the unit is junk and you won't want to use it for driving, so the City Navigator software is a mandatory purchase if you want to use this for turn-by-turn street navigation. The 64MB MicroSD card included with the 60CSx is way too small. Spend $20 and get a 1GB card; that will hold maps of the whole USA rather than just 1 or 2 states. The unit's reception is outstanding; I've repeatedly had a sat lock in the basement of my ranch-style home. Older GPS units can't do that, but the Sirf III chip in this unit makes it possible. Locking onto the sat signal is fast and reliable with the 60CSx, and

I recently purchased the GPSMAP 60CSx through Amazon, and am completely satisfied with the unit. Just to cover a few earlier 'cons' that I read on other reviews:

(1) The customer service from Garmin was outstanding for me. The button that screws into the back of the unit was missing (as I found when I ordered the Auto Nav Kit), so I called to talk to Garmin about getting one shipped. I had someone on the phone in less than 1 minute and they immediately took care of the problem with no quesitons.

(2) Yes, the basemap that comes with the unit isn't that great. What people need to understand is that a full installation of the City Navigator maps for North America would take up about 1.5 gigs... the chip is only a 64M. If you're willing to spend the money on this unit, buy good maps and a larger microSD card. It's like buying an RV and then complaining about the fuel economy. Plus, some people may not even want those maps, and prefer the topo maps. Just buy what you want.

For the

This is a great GPS with good performance. The only reason I can't give it 5 stars is, that because of it's multiple capabilities, it is somewhat complex and might not qualify as a "user friendly" unit for some people. Anyone buying one of these should understand that until it is loaded with the proper navigation software, (About $116.00 plus tax and shipping.) it is not capable of a detailed navigation display. Since it only comes with a 64K memory chip, it will also be necessary to install a larger memory chip to accommodate the software. (I would recommend 1 GB) This will cost anywhere from 30 to 90 dollars, depending on whether you can find one on sale or not. I did have to contact Garmin on one occasion, and was impressed with their support. If you are looking for a great handheld, I would recommend it unless you want complete performance right out of the box.

This is the best gps I have found for people on the go. I use this gps when I drive and go for walks. I really like the waterproof protection it provides. Make sure you buy rechargable batteries, Gps will drain batteries in about 15-18 hours.

I bought this unit to replace my GPSMap 60CS, and use it primarily for bicycling, cross-country skiing and hiking. The 60CSx is a significant improvement over the 60CS in that it keeps a better lock on satelites in heavy cover, better battery life, and faster software. The expandable memory also allows the unit to easily store many more POI's and maps. Also, my 60CS had a problem with the batteries losing contact, which I subsequently had repaired by Garmin. So far, my 60CSx has not had that problem. I am very satisfied with this unit.

Remember to buy a 2GB microSD (NOT Ultra II) card and get the auto nav kit with it. This thing does not ship with any mounts and you need the cig lighter adapter. Has a very low volume speaker but is an excellent unit. I rate this top of the line with the only problem being the lack of a gas mileage calculator. These units should ship with a 2GB card by default and a auto nav kit by default since everyone needs one anyway. gpsinformation net forums are very useful for finding all the hidden features in this unit for example pushing the up right left down in the trip computer will bring up the debug log which is not mentioned in the manual. Other than that im very happy with the unit. also has a rebate for now which gives you some money back. all accessories are compatible with my GPS V which i owned, so i didnt need the autonav kit. the 76CSX is the exact same unit other than the larger case which floats while this doesnt.

My wife and I are just getting into geocaching and want to buy a GPS that we could use for that, plus ordinary hiking as well as in the car.

We had originally tried a Magellan GPS, but it lacked many of the features we needed and didn't have particularly good sensitivity.

The Garmin 60CSx is a very sensitive, well-engineered GPS with a well thought out interface and many accessories available.

The battery life of the 60CSx is about 20 hours. If you use the back-lighted display a lot, battery life will be shorter. Supposedly, you can get marginally better life if you disable the build-in compass.

The screen is visible in sunshine (not washed-out), but glare can be a problem if the sun is at the wrong angle.

I'm very happy with the sensitivity. When I tested the Magellan from my office window, I was unable to get a fix. I was able to receive 6 satellites with the Garmin and had pretty good signal strength. Inside my homes second floor, I'm able to get good signal strength. We had extremely

I cut my GPS teeth on an eTrex Vista (a great little handheld in its own right) for a couple of years before stepping up to the 60CSx. After five months of use, I have only positive things to say about my latest purchase. I was aware of some owners' early concerns about "wandering" and the seeming inability to enable WAAS, but figured Garmin would eventually address such firmware issues, and so decided to take the plunge. The first thing I did (the first thing any purchaser should do) was to download all of the available updates from Garmin's website, and my 60CSx performed flawlessly from the get-go. So yes, I can enable WAAS, but I don't bother to use it because for me the slight increase in accuracy isn't enough to justify the additional battery drain. Consistently getting within ten feet or less of a waypoint is good enough for me. I'm not doing cadastral surveys, after all.

I replaced the supplied 64mb micro SD with a 1 gb card and have installed selected maps from both City
