I purchased this laptop to use it a portable unit, in addition to a workstation I already have. My overall impression is that it is a great laptop at an affordable price. I just installed Ubuntu 9.10; there are some driver issues, but all key functions are working out of the box. Pros: Thin and light, although not the lightest Good screen size 14 inches > 13.3 for most portable laptops Long battery life. 6 hours on full brightness Beautiful, smooth keyboard --- feels great to type Minimalistic overall design with great beauty -- it looks better than photos, and I was pleasantly surprised when received the item. Cons: Overall, only minor complains Fans a bit loud when on full; sometimes they are on for minutes continuously Keys attract fingerprints Optical drive not modular -- not able to remove it to save weight (without taking out screws). (Note: Some driver issues with Ubuntu 9.10) If you need a portable unit for basic working, I would recommend this product.

I have had exactly the same 100% processor utilization issues as Harold McFarland. I sent an email to Acer Tech Support one week ago and have yet to receive anything other than their automated "we received your email" reply. I have spent many hours getting this laptop setup and have had to power off and restart the machine about a dozen or more times when the processor pegged out at 100% and stayed there. I finally had the last straw today and decided to take it back to Staples where I bought it a week or so ago. I did a search for "Acer 4810 100% processor" and came up with this report. I had already updated the drivers, but not the BIOS. Thanks to Harold, I downloaded the BIOS update (now 1.28) and flashed the BIOS. While the jury is still out on whether it is now fixed, I hope to have the same experience as Harold and others. It's ashame ACER support are so non-responsive and oblivious to the problem. If I have to power down one more time because of processor lock-up, it will

After a laptop that had dwindled to a 20-minute battery life, this Acer is absolutely amazing! The claim that it lasts 8 hours is pretty accurate. I typically get between 7 and 7.5 hours, typically with using the internet, word processing programs, etc. The Acer power setting automatically dims the screen when you unplug the AC adapter, to save battery life, but you can change this setting.
The laptop is extremely light, which combined with the long battery life makes it perfect for me to take to 5 hours of classes. I was concerned in the beginning because the screen feels slightly flimsy, but it is actually built very well.
Fan noise is virtually non-existent, I think I've only heard the fan for a total of 20 seconds. Even though the fan rarely turns on, the laptop stays incredibly cool to the touch, making it easy to use as a real "lap"-top.
The Crystal Eye Webcam is easy to access and use, although I've only tested it out for this

A word of caution for anyone buying an acer aspire timeline computer either the 15.6" or 14". You will not have the lockups some on here are claiming they had if you use windows xp or windows7 and you do a clean install of the OS. If you update the bios and all the drivers that will help significantly too. Remember also, a 64bit os is better then a 32bit if you have 3 gigs or more of memory.

This is the 2nd laptop I've owned. My first one was a Toshiba Satellite that had 80gb and 512mb memory--this laptop is a huge upgrade to say the least! And the price was great, too! The model number of this laptop is 4810TZ-4011 and features an Intel Pentium processor at 1.3GHz, 3gb DDR3 memory, and 320gb hard drive. I got it for $535 with free shipping and it came in exactly five days. Thanks Amazon! And the reason why I chose this laptop over the 13 inch is that it has the CD/DVD drive that I wanted. It comes with the free Windows 7 upgrade that is being promoted by several manufacturers right now. I received NO paperwork about it, but I just went on the Acer website and found the right links. They just ask for your product serial number (on the bottom of the laptop) and shipping info. Then your order is placed; very easy process. The laptop is in adark grey color and looks quite nice, actually. The build of the laptop feels very sturdy. The lid does much fingerprint smudge which

From what I have read on these timeline series, updating your Graphics Driver and LAN driver might fix the problem with the CPU usage spiking during idle. If the unit runs slow when its unplugged but it runs fine when plugged in, its probably some kind of power save utility or setting, set to slow down when unplugged to save battery life.
