I tried these out before burning them in and a 40-hour burn in was enough for me to notice a difference in the overall responsiveness. I use these to double-check my mixes and to help balance out my recordings in addition to regular studio monitors. They also work well in a slightly noisy environment when you need to monitor something.

After reading many positive reviews of this item on the Internet, my expectations were high. I have a pair of el cheapo Sony phones that came with a portable CD player and I was surprised by the quality of these very inexpensive phones. Not that they are audiophile quality by any means, but they are listenable and good for the price. So, needless to say, based upon previous experience with these Sony products, I was expecting a very good sounding set of phones. But when I heard these phones I couldn't believe it. It was like trying to listen to fingernails scatching on a blackboard. They were a little down in the lower midrange but the high's were thin, tinny and harsh sounding. They also consistently introduced distortion in the higher spectrum above 7000 to 8000 hertz. I listened to these phones with a variety of input sources. Even with the highest quality CD's played though my Denon and Keocera receivers they continued to be unlistenable. I would much rather listen to the

Not only are these headphones great to listen to,they fit nice and snug. Great sounding phones like these are hard to find at a good price. They are very comfortable and they filter out noise around you. The sound is clear and accurate. I heard sound from my music I never heard before.Thats why I give the Sony MDR-V6, A Best Buy 5 star rating.

I have a lot of headphones. And have had for many years. I have these, and love them. These are closed-ear, clinical, precise sounding cans. They are hot on your ears. They are harsh. They are good for mixing recordings because they consolidate a lot of listening experiences. When you're mixing music, you need to listen on a variety of sources, sources you expect your music to be heard on: iPod earbuds, car stereos, AM radios, Disco sound systems etc. These are great because they relentlessly show detail. If your mix sounds good on these things, it'll sound good on anything. BUT If you are looking for a comfortable, moving listening experience; check out Grado. Audiophile quality, rich and beautiful. Recordings mixed with these Sony's will sound spectacular on Grados. These are an incredible tool, but they are built for a purpose, and it's work, not pleasure.

Over 20 years ago, I had started working at Circuit City and I wanted to buy a good pair of headphones, especially since I got an employee discount of store cost. :-) I tried on all the headphones on the rack, not listening to anything; I just snapped my fingers and listened to how well each headphone muffled the sound. The Sony MDR-V6 pair did the best job. Based on that, I bought them. Imagine my shock when I listened to them and realized that they gave me better sound than my actual speakers did! Over the 20 years since then, the padding disintegrated, and in my last move, they got... um. A bit crunched. I was heartbroken, as I remember Sony replacing the V6 with a far lesser pair of V600 headphones. They had (I thought) renamed the V6 and tripled the price. Not so, apparently! I found my current pair of V6s right here on Amazon for the exact price I'd paid for them (at cost, remember) back in 1987!! If you have any desire to hear your music without distraction, if you want

HEAVY USE. I have cranked the bass. I have stepped on, sat on, dropped, and used these every day since May 9th or so. That includes being used in the rain. I have tried everything I can to find some sort of criticism about these headphones, seriously. But all I've found is the best pair of headphones I've ever owned. They continue to power on. They continue to amaze me, with how much bass they can handle. When I bought these, I did not intend them to be my everyday headphones, too big and bulky, I had in ear headphones for that. After a while, I became a serious quality snob, nothing else sounded as good.

These headphones are very comfortable and worked nicely for about 6 months.Maybe I'm hard on my headphones but I think for the price I paid ,they should last longer than 6 months.

I love Sony headphones. I've owned the MDR-V6 for 9 years, and just recently picked up the MDR-V900HD, which is only a little bit better sounding than these, but for more than twice the price. My pair of MDR-V6 is still going strong, survived years in band/live recording situations with just a few scratches, and the ear pad vinyl is starting to come off a little on the edges. Laid back, clear, clean sound, with no strange EQ bumps. Blocks sound well, built like a truck, and is reasonably comfortable (MRD-V900HD is better, ie bigger, in that regard). 5 stars.

In the late eighties, I used to buy used cd's at a place that had cd players with headphones which people could use to listen to cd's. You know: try before you buy. Well, obviously that store thought highly of these sony mdr v6 things. They had invested in a easily a hundred pair.

At that time I had some sennheisers that I'd bought with my eighteenth birthday money and thought the german cans were supposed to be "the best." (Uunt yaa, Gunter, vee can make zeez canz bettah zan non-aryans) Well, after hearing these repeatedly in that store I kept wondering why I had wasted so much money on those sennheisers. So after a year or two of putting up with the "audiophile's" choice of headgear, I finally bought some of these. That was 1990!

I have replaced the earpads since then and the headband looks a little worn, but otherwise there seems to be no reason to buy a new pair.

A couple of years ago, I got the bug to try the much-touted grados (model sr80 to be specific: Grado Prestige Series

At long last.. I finally found the headphones that I've been looking for.
It's a Sony MDR-V6 which is physicaly and sonically identical to the Sony MDR-7506.. According to some sites like headfi.org that the Sony MDR-V6 and MDR-7506 only difference is that when the 7506 gets broken or found defective by Sony.. They will be replacing it with the same 7506 model.. Unlike for the MDR-V6 if it was found defective by Sony they will just replace it with a consumer headphones MDR-V600.. The price difference is $30 which is a lot.. thats why I chose MDR-V6 instead.. Some say that MDR-V6 sounds more neutral and uncolored than the 7506. Good thing Sony decided to remanufacture the V6 since alot of people are looking for them.
Well, the search is over... am I contended with my MDR-V6 purchase?? All I can say is YES... I've been burning in the headphones yesterday from 3pm till 10pm and I haven't noticed any problems with the comfort.. I just love using it..
I added non resistant cloth so that it

PROS: Great Sound, Quality parts, decent amount of base, it will probably last me a long time
CONS: After wearing these for a long time (2+ hours), it's a bit uncomfortable to wear. I have a relatively small head, so I thought it might not feel too "tight", but the ear cushions don't completely go around the ear, and some discomfort is caused. The coiled cord needs to rest somewhere, otherwise it does seem to be slightly heavy on the left ear cup - just rest the cord on your lap. I will look into getting the velour pads that others have mentioned in the future.

OTHER: Slight discomfort aside, it's a great sounding headphone and does a great job at isolating surrounding sound. In fact, I thought it was such a good head phone, I purchased a second one for later use - in case I lose this one. My old headphones have been SONY and Panasonic, both were great, but plastic head band would crack after much use and I didn't know how much better sounding these V6s were until I tried them. If

I've been using various Sony headphones throughout my 27 years on this planet, and have always been more than happy with them, but I've always just stuck with the cheaper models. Recently, I decided to buy some new headphones. I tried out some other brands, such as Sennheiser, but in the end I decided to come home to Sony.

This is the first time I've bought a pair of headphones in this price range, and all I can say is, I wish I had spent the money on these years ago! I had no idea what I was missing! The sound is very smooth yet precise, the bass response is just right and the highs are not overly bright (like the Sennheisers I tried).

I've generally never cared for over-the-ear cans (most ones I've tried either squeezed my head or irritated my ears), but these are super comfortable. I've been wearing them all day (in fact I'm listening to them right now), and although my ears are a tiny bit sweaty after wearing them all day, they are still perfectly comfortable.

For those of you that

I am a full time musician, so listening to music is huge a part of my daily life. I do not fall into the "audiophile" category though.

I remember auditioning these in a store about 6 years ago with Sennheiser hd 497 and at the time I had the impression that the Sony MDR V6 didn't have enough definition in the high end, plus they were more expensive and went with the Sennheisers.

I always struggled with the long and very puny cord that came with the Sennheisers, and though they seemed comfy at first, I would get serious fatigue on longer sessions. Eventually the cord shorted out on me for some reason. While considering another pair, I remembered the V6, surprised to see it still existed and after reading all the positive reviews I ordered them.

These headphones are a pleasure to use. Excellent and balanced sound, throughout the dynamic range. I feel I can really get deeper into the music. The moment you wear them, its like your head is in a pillow, its so comfortable. The weightiness

Let me just start off by saying that I do not consider myself an "audiophile." I cannot give you a highly technical review of the lows, highs, and midtones that the MDR-V6's produce... I'm just a guy, obsessed with having my music sound great (whether it's coming from my computer, my iPod, or some other device). If that's you, read on.

First, allow me to explain to you why I bought these headphones... For quite some time, I have been a fan of Koss headphones. My first pair of full-size circumaural headphones were the Koss KHP21v's (do a search and you should be able to find them here on Amazon). They sounded brilliant to me at the time, and they are what got me "obsessed with having my music sound good." However, after a year or so, the cord began to fall apart (for lack of a better description), which resulted in hearing no sound at all. After that, I bought the Koss SB-45 Multimedia headset, which you can find here: Koss SB-45 Headset. As you'll notice, the SB-45's have a built in microphone.

After having my MDR-V6 headphones for six months I think I can finally give a review of them.
PRO - Flat, accurate sound from low to high that gets smoother the more I use them.

Reasonably light weight for their size.

Generally well built except for the exposed wire leading to each earpiece.

The low impedence allows me to use the V6 with my retro portable CD players (one of them only uses 1 AA battery) with good sound volume. No need at all for an amplifier.

CON - When putting the headphones on, my fingers sometimes get caught in the exposed wires leading to each can. I've learned that when one of my fingers can't let go of the headphones after putting them on, to stop and gently pull whichever finger is caught out of the wire loop lest I rip the wire out of the can.

The pleather earpads that come with the V6s tended to make my ears REALLY hot and sweaty in summer weather. I replaced them with a pair of Beyerdynamic Velour Padded Earcushions for the DT-250 from B&H Photo. Big improvement

These are awesome headphones, they are similar to the more expensive Sony MDR-7506 - the cord is extra long and they are VERY comfortable after wearing them for long periods of time.I couldn't recommend them more.

I bought these headphones based on reviews by other Amazon customers - ready to return these cans in a flash if they were not up to snuff. I'm an audiophile and want to hear music with details, with a nice coherence, with voices that sound as natural as possible, with the sounds of instruments having depth and character....you know - MUSIC!... as close as possible as it might sound if the music was being played live in front of me. I play several instruments and have been a techie setting up sound systems for orchestras at performances ( it is wonderful to be backstage listening to an orchestra from whichever perspective you choose by moving around; near the woodwinds, the brass, the percussion- so I know what instruments really sound like up close). I don't have the usual audiophile desire to hear the performance from 20th row center. I like a piano to sound just like one sounds when you are sitting at it playing it, mechanical sounds and all.

So....do these deliver? I a word -

These have to be the most amazing headphones for the price. Your mp3's and other digital music will never be the same after you have properly broken these in. As for comfort, they are soft and are pain free. I could wear them for hours. Bass response is excellent and the highs are crisp and clear. Buy these now!

I tried 3 different sets of professional headphones before settling on these --- I really really like the Bose Triports, and they're probably the most comfortable headphones I've ever worn --- but they're ridiculously flimsy and I read many reports of them breaking. These Sony MDR-V6s are old workhorses, durable, amazing sound quality, and nearly every bit as comfortable as the Bose Triports. They have a good deal of bass without being bass heavy. Very realistic sound.

They fully fit over the ear and block out a good deal of outside sound, and they fold for easy travel and storage. The coiled cord is a great touch. You don't need a headphone amp with the MDR-V6s so it's easy to listen to your iPod, etc. You don't get a gold connector (not really an issue), but you do get a 1/4" adaptor. I picked these up for $75 here on Amazon and they're every bit as good as headphones twice that price. Very highly recommended.

I first bought these to go with a Discman many years ago. I review lots of classical music CDs here at Amazon and if I listened to them all via loudspeakers it would probably drive my wife nuts. So I often use these headphones instead. Another reason I do that is that I find that the sound they deliver is a clear analog of the sound I get from high quality loudspeakers. I find I can wear them comfortably for as long as I'm listening -- and sometimes that's hours at a time -- and never have the urge, as I do with other headphones, to take them off because of physical or aural discomfort.

More recently I got an iPod -- my kids went together for my birthday and bought me the fanciest iPod available! -- and I find that these headphones are MUCH more comfortable and acoustically accurate than those darn earbuds that come with the iPod. I do notice that these headphones apparently have greater impedance than the earbuds; that is, the volume control has to be turned up a bit to get the same volume

This review is aimed at those with eyeglasses and whose ears get pinched between the eyeglass arms and the earphones. I do not like to block up my ears with ear plugs all day for health concerns. I have bought and used these:
Sony MDR-CD230
Sony MDR-V6
Sony MDR-XD200
My ears are not real fussy on quality, nearly all headphones give my ears a problem by pressing them against my eyeglass arms and this hurts, usually after 10-20 minutes of listening. My hatsize if about 7.25,
my ears are pretty normal in size, I am middle aged. All three of these headphones I own are the best I have tried on or read reviews by eyeglass wearers over past 2 years. Headphones have a left and right side - the cord typically is attached to the left side, and the ear spaces, or cups, are oriented accordingly, to that the back of the ear lobe has more space to sit in than the front of the ear lobe. The sideways pressure (how hard they clamp onto your head) also is a secondary factor in whether my ears hurt. I wear

Great headphones.....they work well with Ipod, computers, stereos...basically everything.....amazing sound....quite comfortable although sometimes a bit hot....highly recommend these....only downside is that they aren't nearly as Stylish as many other closed headphones out there, and no noise reduction.
