I tried several addresses that were to no avail. I entered simple local addresses & one result was that the street did not exist, another example was the address that I entered was 10 miles away. I do not wish to use a device for that kind of guidance.
I returned to store & bought a Garmin... no problems. =D

I LOVE this GPS and quite frankly I feel lost without it!! LOL!! I moved from NY to Houston without a clue as to how to get around. But all I did was type in the address/name of the establishment I wished to visit and the GPS guided me there via the fastest route. I also used the computerized voice so that the GPS calls out the street names for added procision. And I am especially stoked about this item because I got it on sale for about $150 and it just gets no better than that. I would recommend this item to any and everyone!!

I found this particular gps to be a difficult to use. I still am having a hard time remembering shortcuts and which buttons to push when. It doesn't explain what the icons on the screen represent, and while some are obvious, others are not. Lastly and most importantly, this gps (at least with me) is very slow to zone in on your location and determine a route when it is turned from off to on. It takes mine, on average, 3-5 minutes. That is not acceptable, but perhaps I do not use it enough to make a firm conclusion of this product. You may be better off buying the cheapest gps you can find.

We bought the GPS for a trip to Niagara Falls Canada and then coming back through the States. IT was really nice to switch between states, and find food, gas, hotels, along our route. we did notice a few rural roads, or when we searching for something by Point of Interest it couldn't find everything which is fine. I mean there were so many other features that were available that outweighed something simple like that for it to be considered a problem. I am not crazy about the Suction cup that it came with, considering the GPS fell off twice, but we are going to look at a dash mount.

The unit locks on to satelites quickly, the mapping function does what it is supposed to do, the only glitch I've encountered is some of the really rural roads need to be fine tuned. But I can live with a road that is off by 50 feet on the screen. As noted, hopefully by the later part of 2010 the Census 2010 data will be loaded into the Tom-Tom database, and of course, for a price, we can be "dead on". What is most important for me is that the latitude and longitude coordinates are accurate, because those are what I use when notifying the 'one-call" center of where we plan to dig for construction work line locates.

I bought this GPS because I thought my first one was stolen! but I am glad I did it has more features like Mexico added old one didn't have. (7) million preloaded POI old one didn't have 7 million. IQ routes, Advanced lane guidance (which BTW works great) I love my Tom Tom no problems with it or the old one BTW I found in my garage 2 months later the wife borrowed it without telling me. oh well I have a newer Tom Tom with more features and it cost less then the old one which was a fathers day present.

Don't ever buy a Tom Tom. Get a Garmin or if for whatever reason you don't want the best you could also get a Magellen, either way it will be better than a Tom Tom

I am very happy with the unit. The only thing that I was dissapointed with was what came with it. In the picture they show a case, but the case does not come witrh it.

Lot's of good features and quite easy to operate even without reading the manual. The link to TOMTOM Home is easy to configure. I could hear the voice instructions even with the radio on. The lane guidance provides good information especially for a new driver or for areas you are not familiar with.Only drawback is I could barely see the map at certain angles in the car when the sun hits the screen or casts reflected light on the screen. I don't know if other GPS units have the similar problem.Would buy it again.

This GPS is our first one and it was very easy to set up and use. The directions and routes were so very accurate, even including roads under construction that looked very new. The speech was clear, and non-intrusive! It gave us plenty of time to get ready for turns, and when we decided to take our own route it did not say anything, it just gave us the new directions after the missed exit (other machines keep saying "recalculating" and I did not want that). We are Very pleased and the price was less than other stores that had this system. So glad I purchased this TomTom.

I have enjoyed using this Tomtom 340XLS. This unit replaces a Garmin 340spc. Although this is not a good comparison to make. the tomtom works well, easy to install, sharp display, good features. The tomtom has been acurate so far. I agree with others about the need for more memory, I personally did not have any issues upadating the unit when I first turned it on. I purchased the tomtom from Target on Black Friday for $97.00!!

Used my TomTom on a road trip and the signal was lost as much as it worked. Would often lose the signal and not come back on. Terrible around a mountain area. Glad I had my MapQuest directions with me or I would have been lost. Very disappointed with this product.

TOMTOM offers complicated, and not user friendly customer service. Purchased the TOMTOM XL 340-S as a gift. All was well until connected to TOMTOM Home to update maps. The device received an error message and the TOMTOM system was wiped clean & stated No Maps available. After contacting TOMTOM customer service by e-mail stating the problem after several days they responded with a complicated message containing instructions on how to reload the system. It was complicated and hard to follow. Trying to reach them by telephone was also very frustrating & unproductive. As of yet the problem has not been resolved and have yet to talk to a real person. Still trying to contact them. System still down.

Have used this both locally (in town) and for multi state travel. Unit worked well in all applications, Only complaint I would have, would be the incorrect map information that exists. I cannot seem to submit the necessary changes to TOMTOM to correct bad map data. Such as, a street where no street exists. Over all I am well pleased with the performance of the unit and would recommend it.

Purchased as a gift for my husband who secretly wanted a unit but concerned about the cost. After using it for the first time, he texted "great gift" and proceeded to share all the features. He was impressed by the accuracy, detailed highway information and sturdiness. My purchase thru Overstocks was easy, quick and the price that could not be matched anywhere.

overstock had ease of use and great customer service. product seems friendly enough but i think my tomtom one edition might be easier. you have to hunt for some options to find them where the one edition had everything as part of the menu.

I have been a garmin fan for years, but I received this for Christmas and love it. All the features you have in this unit would cost much more for a garmin. It took some getting used to, but once I figured it out it is very simple to use. The lane guidance feature is great in city traffic such as Atlanta. Great buy in my opinion!

I have not had this device long enough to evaluate it completely or fairly yet. So far the device seems to work well and do what it is supposed to do. I have never had a GPS before so I have nothing to compare it to. The only thing negative I can say is- it is difficult to hold the device in your hand without accidentally touching the touch screen. I really don't know if this device truly is a good value for the money, but I bought it because I thought it was. Time will tell if that is correct. The video quality seems fine. The only thing I can say bad about the audio- the voice skips occasionally. Seems easy enough to operate, and I bought it partially because of the features, so I would say the features are good.

Previous to this device I've been using a TomTom ONE for about three years. While the ONE still works fine, I was intrigued by the newer features available--specifically text to speech road names and lane guidance features. Even though I've had only good experiences with TomTom before, I reviewed many reviews here on Amazon for similar devices from Garmin and Magellan as well. All three companies get their share of fans and pans when it comes to reviews. Since my past experience with TomTom had been so positive I decided not to switch brands, and I couldn't be hapier with the results. Here are the great things about this product IMO: 1. Text to speech. You HAVE to have this feature. When you're in heavy traffic trying to get to the airport in an unfamiliar place, being able to listen to the street name is much safer than studying a GPS screen. Trust me. 2. Lane guidance. I can honestly say the only wrong turns I ever made with my TomTom ONE were those times when "Exit right ahead"

I gave this as a gift to my husband. He used it as we went to our son's house after picking up mother. One thing we did learn... if we want to get there quickly we have to select time frame... Otherwise it takes you on a scenic route,,, Great value and easy to use otherwise.

I bought this one as my old TomTom GO 710 (big CRT looking thing) was on it's last leg. I would have given 5 stars except for a couple of things listed below. I've commented on those items below as well as some positives. Ease of use - I tell you this thing is pretty darn easy to use. Being a person who travels quite a bit, I always request a rental car with a GPS so I can find my destination. This has given me a wide amount of experience in other GPS units in geographically unfamiliar territory - so great environment for a GPS test. Out of all the different units I've tested and used, I absolutely think the TomTom is significantly easier to use than other units. I'll probably be taking the TomTom from now on instead. Ease of Installation - It couldn't be much easier. I do have two complaints here but believe me these are not big at all. 1. I wish it came with a travel carrying case which not only held the unit but the Car Power Cord and the Suction Cup Mount (whether attached

I have always used Garmin products in the past, having owned at least four I thought I would try a Tom Tom for a change of pace. After using for a very short while while driving around in our city I noticed at least three street name and address errors in the first hour or so of operation. I do not feel comfortable or confident using this device to navagate to an unknown address.. SO...I'm. going back to a Garmin... The Garmin has become a product I can trust! GIMMEE BACK MY GARMIN!!!

I have been using the TomTom 340S for around 2 months now and i have to say that the device has got me in much trouble to suggest my friends not to buy this item. Problem 1: When i bought the GPS and first connected to my computer it downloaded the mapupdates which were bigger than the space available on the GPS device and the device was useless. It took almost 4 days to get that fixed and around 15 calls to the customer service department. Eventually the suggested me to erase the earlier map and download the newer version. Problem 2: The GPS just does not boot up at times and can get you in huge trouble. I was planning to take this GPS for a long trip but now i am considering buying a nuvi instead as this problem of not booting can be a huge hassle when u are travelling long distances. Once i had been out of my city and the GPS just wont start up it used to hang at the welcome screen. I think problem is because of the new map updates as the device is not able to fit it in. So make

This is my second TOM TOM device and I am pleased that I stayed with the TOMTOM brand. I looked at similar units from Garmin and was disappointed at what I found for the same price. The TOM TOM home program makes map updates and adding additional POI files easy. The audio on this device is loud and very clear.

This is our first GPS purchase and have been impressed. The only two issues that we have had are that 1) it is very difficult to keep the gps connected to the suction cup after attaching it to the windshield when trying to adjust it. Then you need to use both hands to attach it again. This is a pain when you have a larger car (SUV or truck) and the windshield is deep. 2) And it doesn't show the update of I75 Freeway through Detroit. It actually doesn't show any thing at all when you are on the freeway. The major construction has been completed for at least 5 months now. We will probably get the updated map at some point but we will more than likely have to pay for it.

I use to use the GPS in my phone, and this is oh so much better. It's easy to use, and i love the fact that it tells you the distance to your next point and how long it will take you to get there as you are traveling a long distance. And it also shows you the current speed limit in each area you are traveling and how fast you are going over or under the current speed limit.

I am extremely happy with my decision to purchase the TomTom XL 340-S 4.3-Inch Portable GPS Navigator. It's everything I was hoping for. I've updated from the net multiple times with no problems, just nice updates and some added features. I did delete the foreign language voices included on my device that I don't need, in case of future need for space--though it was not necessary. I considered the Garmin nüvi 255W 4.3-Inch Widescreen Portable GPS Navigator, Garmin nüvi 260W 4.3-Inch Widescreen Portable GPS Navigator, Garmin nüvi 265W/265WT 4.3-Inch Widescreen Bluetooth Portable GPS Navigator with Traffic and Garmin nüvi 765/765T 4.3-Inch Bluetooth Portable GPS Navigator with Traffic as well. I got a GREAT deal on my TomTom, that I couldn't pass up and I'm glad I found it! It has: widescreen, lane guidance, posted/actual speed, time left to destin., miles left to destin. ,time you'll arrive at destin., spoken street names!. It's plenty loud enough. I have mine at 70% and I've considered

All I can say is get it. YOU WILL NOT BE SORRY. We used our in DALLAS. TX , It was a hassle on taking it in our carry on luggage, as they made us open our luggage up--yeks! But it worked like a champ in a different city and state. It is a little hard to figure out all of the things that it can do --but it beets the car installed navigator on my Lexus. This is the first real GPS I have ever had (Previously used my Phone's) and so far so good, It works great and guides me everywhere I have asked it to without issue, even in those far from the city areas, TomTom needs to get their act together in what has to do with the software/firmware updates though, they definitely have issues with that, the vast majority of negative reviews I have seen about the XL 340s is about people getting frustrated with the software and maps updates, that's why I gave it a 4 in ease of use, the actual GPSs graphical interface is very user friendly though .

The main problem I see is that the new software they attempt to put in does not fit in the first upgrade attempt, then on second attempt the old firmware will update first thus being able to detect the problem and remove the old stuff first then it all goes smoothly, but most people never make it to the second try it seems because the error messages are not clear enough, just disconnect the device

TomTom performed well right out of the box. Have driven throughout Florida and from MN to NY, round trip with several side excursions, about 3,500 miles to date. Has directed me correctly to every address entered and acquires satilite signals very quickly. Voice announcement of street names is really desirable and works well...I wouldn't buy any GPS without that feature. Only improvement I'd like to see is easy way to alter route while in progress. I've had no warrantee or customer service issues, so I assume those are average. A GPS is an indispensible item for anyone traveling solo.

I compared all GPS models in this price range ($135-$199) before purchasing. Tom Tom XL340-S offered more value, and added features like lane guidance. I was told it was VERY easy to use. Unfortunately, the Tom Tom is not accurate - it tells you that you have arrived before it actually gets to your destination (even my own home). It also does not tell you the side of the street your destination is on which I found more confusing. I spent more time looking for the address, and wondered why I had a GPS. After several disapointing test runs, I decided to return the Tom Tom, and I purchased a Garmin for $20 more giving up lane guidance for accuracy.

This was really easy to use right from the start. The visual is great whether you are traveling night or day. I had problems with it staying in the dash holder as it would fall out and end up on the floor. I found most times when it fell , the information would be interruped and you would have to reset and it would recalibrate. It didn't loose the info such as last destination or home, but you did have to recalibrate it. That was the most challenging while driving and having it end up on the floor. The only other thing was when traveling it would tell you what lane and where you needed to be but then would say "take the highway" without giving audio interstate details. The details are on the device but you can't always look at it. Both of these problems I can live with and do not find them to be much of a problem. I really love having a GPS for some of the traveling I do, so these are minor issues and I am going to try a different holder.

Pros:
+ Fun to customize
+ Nice pc program to backup/update your GPS
+ Excellent customer service
+ Includes maps of Mexico
+ Good price for the value

Cons:
+ Error when updating the maps. After calling CS, the issue was resolved but kept having issues when connecting the GPS to my PC saying that the drive had some errors. Initialy the map updating had some similar issues and some files were corrupt.
+ Maps are really simple and colors are not well defined
+ USB cable is hard to connect to the GPS
+ Cradle adjustment is only clockwise/counterclockwise. You cannot move it forwad/back like other unis

The Bad: 1.- I have found 1 or 2 places where the GPS tells you to turn left, however when you turn right and make a legal U turn, it gets a little crazy. But it eventually comes back to normal. 2.- Cancel Route Button, I wish they would make a easy cancel route button, like when you reach your destination such as a Store in a Shopping Mall or movie Theather. 3.- No beep sound when touching the Screen. 4.- Low Volume Control, when driving at low speeds the volume seams too low @ 75%; Even in my quiet truck.

The Good: 1.- I can have Homer Simpson, Beavis and B.head, or George W. Bush, etc. Tell me how to get there. :) 2.- It has amazing detail on streets and Toll Roads in Mexico. 3.- GPS Signal is better than others, It works even inside my Brick Wall apartment :). 4.- Slim and Light Weight.

Final Note: After 9 years of using diferent GPS systems, from the old systems up to the modern ones. From the navigation in the old pocket pc to my After Market stereo w/navigation.

First. I used this GPS for a month. I found out that when you get to an address you don't know if it is on the right of the left, (Magellan tells you). It just says you have reached the address when you are in the middle of the road and don't know which way to turn.
I also found out that a lot of roads have the wrong names on this GPS. Also the address are in the wrong places. Would you like to know why? Because TomTom uses Map Quest for their mapping. Everyone knows that Map Quest is 75% Wrong on their maps.
So, I go and pay TomTom over $50.00 to do a map update on this GPS. Guess what? Nothing but all kinds of problems with the downloads, (I have high speed cable too). When downloading I got error messages. Over, and over, and over, nothing but errors. So I took it back to Best Buy and got another one. Same problems. I when through 3 of them and then I called TomTom and the guy said he had 8 calls from people that day with the same problems. DO NOT BUY TOMTOM. Buy Megallen. Megallen

I'm pretty tech savvy and have used different GPS devices in the past. I chose Tomtom over Garmin mainly due to tomtom HOME support, better user interface: tomtom has more info on the screen including the street name you're driving on. Most negative reviews here are from issues updating map which is larger than the old one (about 5 Mb larger) and causes error. but it's simple to go around it. 1. connect to home computer. turn the unit on. select Yes to connect. Tomtom Home will install 2. on Tomtom HOME menu, go to "Manage my ONE XL". On Items on Device, click voices. you can back up then delete all foreign computer voices (recorded voice files are small, so doesn't matter). just keep DAVE, and Susan computer voices( you need at least one computer voice for spoken street names). You should free up about 130 Mb (much more than you need) 3. now you can update new map with no problem. it does take a long time. after you're done, you still have 125 Mb extra to download customized items,

This is a product I would recommend to anyone that travel. I travel and it helped me recently on a trip to Michigan. Some of the time I travel without my spouse and that makes traveling easier. I do not have to have alot of maps in the vehicle and if I am driving I don't have to pull over and look at a map.The Tom Tom I purchased was easy to use. I am not a tech person and this was helpful in setting everything up.It was easy to understand and my passangers enjoyed watching the details the showed up on the screen.Thank you

Auto GPS units are becoming very sophisticated systems and this Tom-Tom is no exception. The differences I have found between similar brands is now blurring due to the ongoing improvements made in this technology. I enjoyed using the TomTom as it was quite intuitive and highly accurate. It did take substantially longer than my Magellan to "receive first position" when flying into a new area, a problem only when waiting in the rental car to find your position. Once locked in that area, its aquisition time is acceptable. The TomTom is absolutely loaded with features so almost anything you would need to find, you can. This includes all the options of having a cow moo or a chicken cluck if you are going over the speed limit, if you pass a church or cemetary, a horn go off to tell you to take a rest. Almost too much but these are just options. But one option I could not find is to have a tone announce my arrival at a turn. The voice lets you know it is time to turn, but a muted gong

Great product. This is my first GPS and I have to say TomTom built a great piece of hardware. The only issue I had was with the speed of the update for the maps. It took about 1.5 hours to update the map software on the device and it was not due to a slow internet connection. I would recommend this product to anyone who is looking for a GPS device.

Great price for this product. It comes with every thing you need to get going. Easy to use and the display is great as well. I like it so much I bought one for my wife and she loves it as well. BTW, when you mount it to the window or dash, make sure you turn the wheel securely at the base of the mount. It will hold like a champ but falls off if you just push it onto the dash mount. This should be obvious but I didn't notice it for a time as I was using the provided dash mount and just tried to push the stand onto it. Oh well. Still love the Tom Tom.

just received my new GPS today, plugged it into my mac, and installed tomtom's mac version of their home software. everything has worked well so far and the free map update installed fine. there are two main things that purchasers need to know: 1) space is very limited on the device. there is only 2 GB of internal flash memory and out of the box there was less than 50 MB free. the very first thing you should do is to delete voices in languages you don't use. this will free up a couple/three hundred MB. they can get backed up to your computer so you could always put them back in the future. once a bit of space is freed up you'll be able to update the device without issue. after removing spanish and french voices, running update which installed a new dave voice, and then installing the free map update i was left with 89 MB free. when i tried to run update before removing the voices, the unit warned me about lack of space and aborted without creating any further problems. maybe

I've been in the market for a new gps and I decided on this one. Of course I saw all the reviews talking about the map update problem. I decided to email tom tom to get their take on it. I was told that yes the updated map is alot bigger but if you go into your tom tom home application on your cpu and delete a couple of those silly voices that we never use first. Then the map will fit just fine. Remember, you always have the option to re add those voices later from tom tom home. So does a need a little work from us to be perfect...yes, but it makes it worth it as tom tom is hands down the best Navigation out there!!

My son has had a GPS for about a year and my husband and I borrowed it when we went to Florida on vacation to see if we could manage it, which we did. So, we decided to get one for ourselves. This is a great device and fairly easy for us to navigate around with.

The GPS is great deal good price good product, the only thing that is not quite good is the memory slot, but everything else is great.. To deal with the issue of memory an upgrade need to be done. The current Canada, Mexico and United State map is too large, that's why you see the 64MB available. But after you run the fix from www.tomtom.com the memory availability is great. So dont think twice and buy it......

It worked great right out of the box. So as soon as i got it home I wanted to get the maps from their 30 day free map guarantee. So I hooked up the usb to the pc and installed their software and got started . It took only minutes to download maps then came the install. It took all night and the next morning to tell me there was an error and was unable tom install maps. So I thought oh well Ill just use it the way it is. The only problem it would not boot up.All it displayed was a flashing x. So I took it back and exchanged it for another another one, thinking it was defective. well I tried it again. And again it did not work. This time I talked to tech support and I must say they were very pleasant and professional to deal with. But in the end I had to exchange it once again. This time no map updates for me!

I had a Garmin 260W and recently had to give it to a family member. I purchased the TOMTOM XL 340S over a week ago (for $159.99) as a replacement and have been putting this product through it's paces. I was a bit cautious to by this product due to the significant amount of negative feed back on Amazon. I would like to state for the record, the item I received seems to be free from all defects and I have experienced none of the problems that some of the other reviewers had. One common problem I read about in the reviews was that updating the maps under 30 day free map updating policy would some how damage, break, or lock up the unit. THAT IS NOT THE CASE. The GPS comes with free software (TOMTOM Home) for your computer that does all the work for you and the GPS has a big enough memory for new maps. After this was out of the way I got into testing the actual product and it's functionality. The GPS had no problem finding satellites and it's basic features are very easy to use!

I think this product is good and i know most people gave it a bad review. I did have a problem trying update the lastest map which was too big so i had to call customer support about 10 xs, once in which they hung up on me ( i was being polite too) I think the tomtom home comes off as being easy to use but when you get into it you find certain things are not where you would expect them. I think it works great and was a good buy through amazon. I need the bigger screen. The advanced lane navigation is cool too. My old one didn't speak street names either. very useful. very fast. always connect satalite signal. Don't waste your money on the homer simpson voice unless you don't mind it NOT telling you street names- which defeats the purpose of some of the key features on the device. Still happy with it. I still recommend it. hopefully tomtom has fixed the map problem by now.

The 340S is a solid, no frills GPS that incorporates some of the best features TomTom units offer. The best of these features are IQ routes, mapshare, and highway "advanced lane guidance". The 340s also allows you to have some fun with easy to download voices and car icons. Also as a point of reference to other reviews, the TomTom Home software worked flawlessly for me. Now it was already loaded into my computer so that may of helped but I encountered no problems updating the device, downloading gas prices, downloading mapshare updates, voices, etc. The heart of a good GPS is routing, re-routing, and the point of interest (POI) database. TomTom is good in the first 2 and ok in the third. TomTom uses something called IQ routes. It gathers information from TomTom users and used that information when planning routes. So it knows when a particular street gets congested at 5:00 pm on Friday and will route you where its IQ route database considers a faster route at that time. This is not the

I bought this unit nearly 2 months ago, and I'm pretty happy with it, because it has delivered on the promise that Tom-Tom made: a great bundle of features for a small price. I don't get to update my map to the latest version because it's too big. But that's no big deal. I think the map in the unit is pretty well up-to-date anyway, and the ability to update within 30 days of purchase is of minimal value. Now if I could update any time within a year... But of course, that's just wishful thinking. There is one thing I want to tell people about, which you can easily get over, but you really need to know about it to make the unit work correctly. To operate effectively, the unit needs to be able to quickly lock in the available GPS satellites. It does so by having a current map of where these satellites are presently located. Without a current map, the unit will take several minutes to scan the sky and find them by itself. You need to have a current satellite map, which means that

I am a former TomTom ONE 3rd Edition owner and enjoyed that GPS unit for well over a year. It was a fantastic little unit with a few minor short comings. I recently replaced it with the XL 340-S unit and find it much improved. (Positives): - The screen is large, bright, sharp and responds well to touch inputs. - The speaker is fantastic, with very loud (adjustable) clear voices. - The suction cup mount is improved 1000 percent! Sticks on the window and will not budge or fall off. The sucker is on tight! - Set-up out of the box was a breeze, however I did NOT plug it into my computer. I plan on using it straight out the box and see how it performs. The unit is not computer dependent. - Super accurate guidance to your destination. - Simple input of addresses. It flows very well with good prediction of text to speed up typing. (Negatives): - Poor documentation in the box. The manuals are simple pictures which lack detailed instructions. However, the unit is very easy to use and figure

Evidently the problem is fixed but you should read the long "Map update problem - Update: Map 830 is back" thread on the TomTom's User forum regarding the fix. It may not be for the technological neophyte: [...] or in case a link is not allowed by Amazon, just eliminate all the spaces in the following and substitute a "/" for the word slash and a "." for the word "period": w w w period tomtomforums period com slash tomtom-one-xl slash 17327--map-update-problem-update-map-830-back period h t m l My remaining concern is if memory is that limited to just enough for a North America map, will it never be enough a year or two from now, no matter how clever TomTom is at limiting the map size? By then it will be an old model and TomTom will not devote any effort to maintaining it.

This is the third TomTom I have owned, and unfortunately the setup process seems to be getting worse with each iteration. I hate to give it such a low rating, but the installation process is just horrendous. I started up this unit and the default language was Czech, seems like a strange choice... But I made it through the first question to select English, so that wasn't horrible. What was bad was connecting it to the computer. I had to unplug 6 times or so, it locked up the PC (Vista) for 5 minutes twice during that process. Eventually the unit was recognized and started the update process, the updates failed. I removed a bunch of the voices to free up some space, rebooted the device a half dozen more times, and the installation succeeded eventually. There seems to be a problem in the order the TomTom installs the updates, as a tip save the voice update for last. One additional annoyance during setup is that you can only have one unit tied to your email account. The whole process

This is a great sat nav, i had the 130s and the speaker failed on me so took it back got another it happened again so i paid a bit more to get the
TomTom XL 340S GPS, it does everything i need, it has 2
GB storage instead of the old 1GB and also has 64MB ram so it's twice as fast than the 130s with 32MB ram, TomTom XL 340S GPS is the same as the 140s just this is bigger and it has a qwerty keypad so there's no switching screens between numbers and letters, The 140s does not,you need to switch.
With it's IQ routes it's perfect i drive all around Portland now with ease with it's clear lane guidance and voice which tells you the name of were you need to go which is great as you don't have to always look at the screen.
As of 22 july 09 i used the latest map guarantee so i have the newest map available for free. I looked up the map update on tomtom and it cost $99.95 if you were to buy it if you had an old TomTom.
Just one more thing i found tomtom to be better than garmin

This was my first GPS unit so I am a novice user. That said it was easy to start up the unit and it was pretty easy to set up my first trip with no real effort. It is small compact unit that would easily fit into my purse or briefcase. The Attached mounting unit makes this unit particularly helpful if you rent auto's regularly as it is all self contained. It comes with the usual USB and auto charger. The screen is clear and well lite for daytime viewing. . I wanted this unit as I was particularly interested in the IQ function. IT is a basic unit with just GPS on it .. No bluetooth or MP3 functions but it does have voice directions. The Voice I chose was not too annoying.. DAVE... but when I did the update the unit now tells me I can't USE DAVE.. as it doesn't support DAVE.!! Well after plugging it into my computer and adding the Tom Tom required program it asked if I wanted to update the software. I was stumped when the unit would not update as requested by the TOM TOM Home program.

The TomTom XL 340S is a fairly basic navigation system by modern standards: it has text to speech, but no bluetooth or live traffic. However, in a couple of days spent with it I enjoyed its performance in terms of recalculation speed, ease of data entry, loudness and voice intelligibility. The XL340S is quite thin and features an innovative ring hookup in the back, that can connect to a range of accessories. It comes in the box with a suction cup attachment that should cover usage in most vehicles. As it was when I received it, I would give the XL340S 4 stars. Unfortunately, I decided to ignore the other reviews and attempt to follow the manual to update the software by running the TomTomHOME software on my Mac. The update took about an hour, and then displayed an error and asked me to restart the TomTom. After I complied, the XL340S informed me that it did not have any authorized map. What? I reconnected it to my computer, and TomTomHOME showed me that I had a OneXL and that my USA and

I first bought this while on a business trip and my old 3 and half year old Tom Tom failed and i went to pick one up because i was completely lost in a city I've never been to at the closest Best Buy (thank you iPhone Google maps for getting me there) I pulled it out the package in the car and it started up and found a signal immediately. It worked very well that day (Atlanta) and the following day in another city (San Francisco). I then read about people having the map update issue killing the unit. I decided to update it anyway because if it died i would have just returned it for a Garmin. I updated the firmware and the other stuff and then the map. I have used it several times since and works fine. I don't know if Tom Tom fixed the issue or if mine was a fluke that it worked.

As for its use, it works great. It fixes on the GPS signal pretty quickly usually. It's route planning is a little slow if you are already travelling pretty quickly. The lane assist is great especially

We purchased this product because it guaranteed updated maps for a number of years. When we got the TomTom unit, we checked for an updated map. The website said that there was one available and we started to download the map. After a few mins. the site said that there was a problem with the download. It told us that the updated map was too big for the unit. Well, OK, we figured that we at least had the original map available and would work with that map. Come to find out, the download process wiped out the original map. We called TomTom customer service and found out that the original map is not available at all anymore, and that there was no valid map available for the model, and that there were no plans to make a map available for the model. TomTom told us to return the unit and get something else. We sure did get something else - a Garmin! The Garmin 255W we got was less expensive and had more features. It even has an SD drive for expansion. Updating the map was quick and easy. The

I just spent nearly 2 hours on the phone with tom tom customer support only to find out that by updating the included map on the unit that I had wiped it out. The only remedy is to return it. This should have been posted on their website but it wasn't. Even their tech people took forever to figure out the problem. Now I'll be without the unit for a week or two and I need it. I will NEVER buy a tom tom again. Way too much work for a device that is supposed to help make things easier.

I bought this unit last week on sale at a big-box retail store. I've not had any of the problems that others have mentioned regarding being prompted to update to maps that are larger than the device capacity. In fact, I noticed that the TomTom Home software now automatically links you to a new compressed map set for units with 2 GB capacity like this, which rectifies the problems others have stated. It's too bad others went through the pain needed to solve the former problem, but it's fixed now and my user experience hasn't been hampered one bit by it, so it isn't entering into the rating of my review. I updated the map and IQ routes with TomTom Home without any issues and also put on some of the user-created voices and icons for giggles. My four year-old will enjoy being navigated by Darth Vader's voice while watching a tie-fighter icon on our cross-country trip next month. Lots of eye-candy customization is available. Bearing in mind the warnings about map size, though, I always

I like it a lot but can't get any satisfaction about the problem. It frezes up when you put in an address on a county road. I have been on the phone with TomTom support for over a month and they finally checked with their devices and said , yeas I was right and they would work on a map that would fit on the device and work. But I'm stuck her waiting on them, for how long they won't say. I tried to get them to do an exchange but they said no.

I do a lot of traveling because I work in sales and I cover three states. I previously had Tomtom 720 but few days ago while I am up in Schaumburg, i didn't lock my car and it got stolen!

So i decided right away I need to buy a new one but what Brand should I get?? I really liked the 720 but it was bulky, and had too many features that i never needed like: Handsfree bluetooth (i use ear piece instead), voice input commands (never really trusted it), and other stuff. Ok Tomtom vs Garmin was my decision... The Garmins appear to have better graphics than Tomtom, and a different menu layout. I recommend you play with one at your BB store to see what I mean. Other than that all other features between the two are the same. Long story short.. here is 340S ($199) vs my old 720 ($400..yeah and somebody stole it from me!) and why to buy:
1- 340S has IQ routes which is GREAT! Gives me very accurate time when I will get there.
2- Speech is available, so street names are loud and clear.
3-

I had used one of these on a trip recently which belonged to a friend. Other than taking us off an interstate just to rejoin on the entrance again (once), it was flawless. So, I bought one for myself. I had it for about 8 days and it was fine except in downtown Chicago when it caused me to take a left when I knew I should have gone S about 3 more blocks. It took us into circles until I turned it off and my party and I found the street again (a one-way) and got to our destination under my own guidance. I suspect the buildings and one-ways had a lot to do with this. I never downloaded the "corrections" users add because I don't trust them, by the way. Anyhow...I wanted to add a pic of a car (vs. the default arrow) and it asked me to download an update. I did, and the screen locked. Cannot be reset with just the switch, there is no button which can be pushed with a a paper clip to reset anything (as was apparently available on older models). After about 6 hours of following online help (TomTom

Watch out for the 30 day map update! It is actually larger than the memory in the TomTom, so thus you can't use it (and it erases the map). Luckily, the first thing you need to do is backup your TomTom. That's what saved me. Not sure if they have a Map Update that fits (yet).

If one follows the instructions and updates the software and Map on a new Tomtom unit before backing up the brand new device, one will be left with a non-functioning unit that must be returned to the manufacturer. The Map update that Tomtom suggests customers download as a matter of course, and which one is prompted to update as a new customer WILL NOT FIT on the device, and the updating process may render the unit useless, as it did in my case. No where is this noted in the FAQ or in Support or on the Web Site or in the downloading procedure or instructions. Having owned literally dozens of software driven devices, I have never before encountered a company that so brazen disregards its customers' well being, by suggesting they download and install a software update or driver that will render the device inoperable. A web search has revealed that many others have had this identical problem, and Tomtom Tech Support is fully aware of this issue. Yet they will not post anything cautioning

ARGHHH! This devise was great, until. I stupidly thought that maybe TomTom had worked out their updated maps problem. They haven't. I tried to update the maps w/ my free update - and "no maps." Blank. Nada. The update wiped out everything. This happened on June 10, 2009. I get to call and argue w/ the company tomorrow. Not my idea of a fun Thursday. Hopefully, they'll make it right by me. I'll let you know what happens. Tune in later.

The product was good out of box until connecting to TomTom Home. I heard I should not update the map. But the Update Device also burned. After installing the update, the map looks black & white, and worst ever, it cannot get satellite signals any more. I called the customer support, they said maybe it's hardware defect. But I am sure by heart it's the software from the TomTom Home that crashes the device. Do they ever try them over before letting people download and update? If the software is not for this model, why not having a mechanism to block them from being download? Low tech employees in a high tech company. Maybe the paids are cheap and smart people were all gone.

I bought this product and intially I really liked it. It had very easy to use screens and the navigation was generally good. Where things started to go wrong is when on some routes, I was asked to if I wanted to avoid "unpaved" roads in my area. There aren't any unpaved roads in my area, so I needed to update my map. I also noticed that the POI "points of interest" were not correct, further prompting me to update my map. The problem is, the unit's hard drive is only 2GB and the file is 1.9MB. So, once you use the "updated" maps, the system can't do anything. TomTom is aware of this problem and has offered to send me a new unit with the most updated map. My question is - what happens when that map becomes outdated? So, I've decided to return this item and purchase a Garmin which has an expandable memory card slot. If you are a user that will never update the maps, then this unit will probably work for you. For me, I didn't buy this item to keep older maps, so I am choosing to return it.

I have tom tom go 730 and I love it. I decided to buy this product for my kid because it has the IQ routing. Unfortunatly, the limitation of disk space made this product so rigid to customize.
My system picked the GPS signal 10 minutes after I turned it on. Upgraded the map and that took all available space. Now the system took 30 minutes to pick up the signal (this is in Savannah, GA) and the last time I turned it on, it took more than half hour and never pick up the signal. I decided it is time to return it after one day of use. I know I probably had a defective unit, however I returned it due to the limitations compared to others in its class. I replaced it with Garmin 255W. So far the system works great. It picks up the signal instatly. However, I miss the IQ and advanced lane features in tom tom. P.S. I tried the high end of Garmin and returned them quickly to the store as they did not compare to tom tom go 730.

I've read that other users are having issues with the free map update. I wanted to add that I was able to update to the latest map (US Canada and Mexico Version: 830.2325, Size: 1669 MB) right out of the box on 05/22/09. I did however have an issue with "Map Share" not displaying my map and notified TomTom. They replied and said they were aware of this issue.

Good news! When I connected to "Home" on 05/29/09 there was an application update as well as "Map Share" updates (Map now displaying in the preferences window).

I've only had it for a week so haven't played with it too much but is very similar to my previous devices. I'm only giving it 4 stars due to the lack of an SD slot (which I knew about) and an awkward USB port.

I researched the TomTom XL 340 S and the Garmin 255 W beyond reason resulting in my calculated conclusion the TomTom XL 340 S was the better device between the two. While I maintain my original premise - the TomTom is far from perfect.

BE ADVISED - you can not update the maps on this device; until - TomTom creates a patch to shink the download data size below 2G(s). I write from experience - when I attached my device to my computer and was prompted to upload TomTom's Guaranteed Latest Maps - the device tanked and I was left with NO maps. "That's right - NO MAPS".

TomTom's solution, mail the device back for a replacement that can not be updated at this time. Moreover, I was informed I had used my one and only chance to upgrage for free - so tough luck.

In the end I know I will be able to update the device (TomTom will likely take Mexico's Maps out leaving it a North American device) and I strongly suspect TomTom will make right by their customers and provide a free maps update,

Don't run the free map update on this device. The map it will give you is larger than the internal hard drive and it will erase the map the came with the before you know what's happening.

I have to return my unit for exchange, I still haven't used it yet. I called TT support and they said that it's a known glitch with this model.

The TomTom 340S performed flawlessly with unparalleled accuracy. It is surprisingly easy to use with intuitive operating featured. The only flaw that was noted was occasional difficulty in spelling out directions on-screen because of my fat fingers hitting an adjacent letter or number.

i have tried many different gps units and this one is the best so far. i dont like magellan because if you select no toll roads it still tries to take a toll bridge as part of your route. garmin was my gps of choice before this tom tom but i dont like the way the routes are calculated with the new nuvi units. also the msn direct traffic service was the worst i have ever used. i have been in hard core traffic jams and that msn direct service has shown absolutely no traffic delays on the long island expressway which if you have traveled the L I E you know it is a mess at rush hour. at other times it would show delays that were not there. the older garmin street pilot series were much better in routing and the fm traffic reciever worked better not perfect but better. this tom tom 340s has excellant features including the advanced lane guidance which makes getting off an exit safe and accurate. the iq routes work great in that it will route you around normal traffic conditions depnding on time

Great GPS pretty easy to use right out of the box (no need to read instructions) the only problem was where to mount it in the car. Purchased an after market mount (Pro Mount) which does the job quit nicely. Would recommend, it gets you home if you're out somewhere new.

I chose this particular GPS because it came with maps for the US, Canada and Mexico pre-loaded, it has spoken street names and it was a reasonable price.

The size of the screen is decent, maps are easy to see. So far it's been accurate, both locally and on a trip to Canada for all the items I have put in so far.

What a loser! This device constantly gave us wrong directions. If we followed all the u-turn directions this device gave us we'd still be traveling in ever diminishing circles. It's a Dud, with a capital D.

With value and cost in mind, this GPS ranks near the top. A comparable Garmin is $400. The features on the Tom Tom Live 740 are not worth the additional cost. Traffic and LIVE features are imperfect on most GPS models at this time unless they are coupled with cell service. Even then, they are still imperfect. There are a few errors on the map, but they are easily correctable with the map correction feature. I recommend this GPS product highly.

We received our new TomTom on the date promised and at a price $50 lower than we could find locally.

The unit aquires satellite signal very quickly which is great. Names of roads and streets are provided well in advance with lane guidance being of great value. When we searched for "points of interest" we found exactly what we were looking for quickly.

We have not taken any major trips yet so it's difficult to assess the unit fully, but we are very pleased. We had a high end Magellan unit before and believe this unit to be equal or better.

This unit is worth buying just for the IQ routes! The most important feature of any GPS is its competence in routing. I have owned several brands of GPS, including Garmin and Mio. This one has the best routing yet! It always seems to choose a route that a local driver would choose. Some local drivers could even learn some better routes with this thing.

The text to speech voice works well. Like other TomToms, it is very easy to customize in terms of the information you wish to display on the screen.

The screen could be brighter. The windshield mount does not hold as securely as one would wish. I use an Arkon vent mount.

The text to speech voice works well. It has a very extensive POI database. Like other TomToms, it is very easy to customize in terms of the information you wish to display on the screen. I even created a custom icon of my Toyota Yaris.

I originally purchased a 140S, but exchanged it for this unit so I could get the widescreen. The Best Buy exchange process was very easy.

This is my second TomTom (Previously had the GO 910) and this version is amazingly better. I wanted to upgrade due to the tremendous advances in the newer versions. Start up time is smoking fast, the new Advanced Lane Guidance is awesome, and the compact size and mounting hardware are first rate. I loved my first TomTom but I love my new 340-S even more.

I like the user interface of the Tom Tom GPS products. I bought this because it has all features I like from GO products minus bluetooth and voice prompts as Tomtom bluetooth work with only selective products.
Pros
User friendly
Ability to update the map, poi, speed, road blocks etc
latest map

Con

I did notice it take 2 to 3 mins to lock in the satellite connection.
