I read the other reveiws and could agree with a couuple of points. The unit is a little difficult to open up, you do have to use two hands...also, my husband likes to sit it on his chest and watch movies when we camp...the little soft touch buttons almost sense the heat of his fingers when he adjusts it and changes settings sometimes...other than that its great! I think you can get used to the cons because the pros outweight them! I also found ours "open box" at Best Buy and got it for $99.99...plus $10 for 2-year replacement puts the value for us over the top! Another great Sony product!

This player has a smaller screen than some of the other less well-known brand products. That is about the only drawback I have seen so far -- after about 45 days of use. The battery life is typically around 6 hours and my little one can see three movies on a full charge. This unit has very high quality screen that remains undistorted when viewed at more than 75 degree from frontal view. Also, it is a well-built unit as it got dropped a few times from 2 feet level on carpeted concrete but kept on working. The other features like playing a plethora of music, JPGs, etc. work well too. In contrast, I bought a Coby with 10.1" screen that lasted no more a month before needing warranty service. The replacement Coby died within 6 months as well. The Coby had a mediocre image quality... way inferior than this Sony. If Sony can keep on making products like this, it may survive this century after all!

Yes it's a Sony, which means quality and feature-wise you pretty much have it all.
But really, -
- the open dvd button is right where you put your fingers generally, so you find yourself always accidentally opening the dvd cover in mid-play if you dare are moving the player, etc.
- the picture quality appears ok, but - it's a Sony - it should be significantly better in my opinion.
- the sound from the player w/o headphones is pretty 'tinny' sounding,
- lifting the screen up to view it needs some soft of place to grab - you need 2 hands to do it.
Battery lasted approx 4+ hours, with headphones and default settings.
I would wait til next year's model came out, and see if it was better.

Bought this DVD player on Amazon in July 2009. Been doing great but am starting to get a black screen now when playing DVDs. Can still hear sound but the screen goes black. Is anyone else having this issue? Am surprised I am already having problems after only a couple of months. Contacting Sony now to request a replacement.

I own this model in red. I looked at many models for a couple of weeks before purchasing this portable DVD player. I am absolutely thrilled with it! I knew I would be as soon as I opened the box, but decided to wait until after our vacation to see if it held up. It is FANTASTIC!!! First of all, the picture quality is awesome - as is the volume. It gets LOUD. I bought it for the purpose of keeping an 18 month old entertained on a plane ride and on a driving tour of California; it exceeded my expectations. I first had to use it in the airport waiting for the plane, and I am not joking or exaggerating when I say that it received compliments from people around us about the picture and sound quality (I didn't have the headphones in use at that time). On the plane, the sound is so good that we could hear with or without headphones, but for courtesy's sake, we used our headphones (had to purchase separately). No, you cannot rewind it just a little bit with the buttons on the player, but you

There really are not that many choices out there and the Sony DVPFX-930 does seem to be the best of the readily available bunch. Picture is quite good - especially if you back off the contrast and raise the brightness. Some additional info: Despite what some posters have said - you absolutely CAN FAST FORWARD and FAST REVERSE withOUT the REMOTE Control using the OPTIONS do-dad on the right front panel. FF and REV is possible at 3 different speeds. Aside from the AV OUTputs, it also has AV INputs so you can check out your mini-DV camcorder or digital still camera recordings while on the road on a screen that's a lot bigger than what your camera offers. To me - that was a major plus. Purchase price includes AC Charger, DC power supply for car, special AV patch cord, Remote Control. I know of no other player that comes close to 6 hours of playback time on a fully charged battery. CONS: Others have raved about the sound - it's clear and it can be made quite loud but the tonal quality

My televisions (2 in my adult life) have always been Sony, so when I decided to purchase a portable DVD player, I shopped around, but in the end "spent a little more" to have the quality of a Sony. And I haven't been disappointed. The screen quality is crisp, the swiveling screen is unique and it's easy to use. Worth the price.

Really like the product. I like that the battery has a life of 6 hours plus it fitws flat on the bottom of the player; no hugh bulges on the bottom. The picture & sound are excellent. I used factory & copies of movies & they played perfectly. Very good product.

Ok ill be honest as I can with only owning the player for a couple of weeks Im not going to restate the features or whats included in the box since those are already listed. Movies I have watched on the player: Horton hears a who Parts of spiderman Wall-E Okay first off ill give you the warnings. This is a widescreen player, buying a widescreen movie will not fill the screen like you are expecting. It all depends on what the movie was shot in(what ratio) widescreen is 16:9 if it wasnt shot in that you WILL HAVE black bars on top and bottom. Also I for fully movies it will have vertical bars. You can stretch a full movie and it will fill the screen. It looks semi wider but not very noticeable. Other notable things to mention -remote does not have on and off located on it. -some people say you can only skip frames with the arrow keys on the player, this is not true, you have to use the little directional pad for normal reverse and fastforward -If you turn off the player completely it

I bought this unit to replace an LG DP781 and I couldn't be happier. The picture is just incredible. Just like watching TV. Typical Sony quality I've come to love and expect. There are several screen setup options so you can get the picture just right. I was also impressed with the sound from those little speakers. Very clear. Not scratchy or tinky at all. Several sound options to choose from too. No USB port or DivX? So what!!! It's a DVD player, it's NOT a computer. If you want all that other flubdubbery, buy a laptop. Well worth the extra money. Good job Sony! You hit the bullseye.

The version released overseas apparently has a USB port and DivX support. This one does NOT. Completely worthless to me. If you are only going to play retail DVDs, then this player is probably more useful. It looks nice, screen is nice, and the controls seem nice. It did not come with a headrest adapter, which I was also disappointed about. It is also ridiculously thick. I kept it for a day and am returning it for another player with DivX support and hopefully a USB port for pictures and movies from a USB drive.

At first, I was just happy that the buttons didn't really look like buttons. My two year old will push every circle in sight. Then I was thrilled to discover the "hold" button on the side of this portable DVD player. So far she hasn't discovered the hold and power switches that are on the side. Unfortunately, the "open" button doesn't lock when HOLD is pushed and it's placed prominently on the top of the player. Taping a small piece of cardboard over it keeps her from constantly opening the machine!

There are so many portable DVD players out there so to decide I checked all the online reviews I could find and picked this one. It was the right choice for me. I rarely travel, and I wanted a player that was very light for carrying around the house. This is just perfect. I use it while cleaning and/or cooking, so it goes from room to room easily. Other uses for me are when I'm exercising or just sitting outside on my porch. I did charge the battery, but I rarely use it. I just plug the player in wherever I happen to be, so I really don't know how long the battery life is. The volume would be too low (without headphones) if watching from across a room, but that hasn't been an issue for me yet either. Best of all, I can plug in the headphones and watch in bed without disturbing my sleeping husband. The picture quality is exceptional and the sound quality is certainly acceptable. I'm very pleased with this one.

Great Portable DVD Player. Better than I expected. It is a long time since I have the pleasure to see a great quality electronic product. The picture quality is amazing. The volume of the speakers is loud. And it has two earphones connections. And it can be connected to a TV, example in a hotel room when you are in a business trip.

Very happy with this DVD player. The Sony DVP-FX930 is a great buy. The 9 inch screen is crystal clear. The remote works well. Battery life is about 2-3 hours of operation.

I did a product search on Amazon for a region free portable dvd player and this was one of the nicer ones I was shown. When it arrived I tried some of the DVDs I have from Europe and Asia and it wouldn't play them. So I've had to return it. So if like me you've been shown this when you searched for a "region free portable dvd player" don't make the same mistake I did! This only plays American DVDs.

I was looking for a portable DVD player for long trips with my 2 1/2 year old and this one did the trick. It looks great, works great and even sounds great. I totally recommend this product. The 9" screen is just the perfect size and it definitely did its job-- it kept my garrulous daughter quiet for a good two hours. The battery life on this is amazing. You could watch 2 disney movies without having to recharge. It comes with a little remote and it flips around to lay flat if you attach it to a case for the car. Very good buy for us.

This Portable DVD player is great. It is a little larger then most, but fits in the travel case I purchased that can be mounted in the second seat of my car. The kids love the feature where they can use their headphones while I listen to my music in the front seat. The picture is very bright and clear and I am so pleased with my purchase.

Does exactly what it says it will do. Bought it for my son on deployment to the Gulf. 6 hour battery was a big selling point, other players had 2 hour battery life and seldom made it thru one DVD movie. This one at least lets you get thru a couple of movies before you have to recharge it. It's built well and a sturdy product. I recommend this product. FrankA.

I'm having a blast with this DVD player. I have 5 grandchildren who live out of state, and my daughter sends me DVDs of them regularly, instead of hard copy photos. Besides being able to play movies and TV shows anyplace I want, I can bring my compact little Sony player when I meet my friends for lunch and easily show a DVD of my grandchildren, while others are showing still photos. Recently I took it with me on a train trip and was able to watch a movie on the way. It also can accomodate 2 sets of earphones. I've been very impressed with the duration of the battery power and the quality of the picture and sound. Everyone who sees it is very impressed. I've recommended it to several people already.

I'm a mother of two (6&3 yrs) who travel a few times a year. I tried the coloring books and activities in the car, but it just didn't work. I broke down and bought this dvd player. I love it. I plays for about the six hours listed. The sound projects toward where the screen is facing so while the kids are watching it my husband and I can talk. I got the carrying case on Amazon that straps it in between seats, perfect. Plays my home dvds perfectly and endless Scooby Doo for the kids. Worth every penny.

Outstanding. We just purchased this dvd player to replace another portable dvd player that finally stopped working. The picture is great. Sound is okay, but if you put earphones on it is perfect. Very easy to use. The menu button on the screen allows you to skip all of the previews on the dvd and go directly to the movie. I would definitely recommend this dvd player to everyone.

We have had this player for a little while now, and we are really enjoying it. The picture and sound quality are amazing....with or without the earphones! Also, it is supposed to be able to play DivX....but we haven't tried that yet....

This is my first DVD player that I purchased for entertaining my granddaughter on an airplane ride. I was drawn by the 9" screen, the 6 hour battery life, and the Sony name. While there are abundant choices, most offer smaller screens and names I don't recognize. Furthermore, 2 hour battery life seems to be the norm. Nevertheless, I wasn't overwhelmed by this model.
The screen resolution and quality is good, but not great. (I couldn't imagine viewing anything on a smaller screen.) Furthermore, I expected better speaker quality from Sony (and this price range.) The 180 degree pivoting screen was deceiving, as it only pivots to one side. Logically, I don't understand this, as 90 degrees to each side makes more sense. However, the 6 hour battery life seems accurate - although it also requires a 6 hour charge.
Overall, I'd buy it again as it was invaluable for entertaining the granddaughter on the long flight. However, if you aren't in a hurry, it would pay to wait for the price to drop

Does what it's supposed to do. Great picture. Good sound. Cover can be a little difficult to open but not a big problem. Fair price for quality unit.

This is a well built portable DVD Player that delivers a very good picture and sound (use headphones) in a small unit.
I have used it to entertain my children on a car trip and also have had it outside on some of the more recent warmer days to watch a movie while relaxing. Does a good job there also, though direct light (as to be expected) is not very good for viewing, a bit of shade and it is great.
The price and performance is very hard to beat.

I waited 2 months for this Portable Sony 9' DVD player to arrive on the store shelf since i did not want to buy anything else but the best. The player is sleek and has a great picture and the sound is ok i just charged it right out of the box and watched 2 movies ( 4 hours ) and didn't need to recharge. If your looking for a good portable DVD player i suggest get the best and forget the rest.....I try not to go cheap when it comes to electronics because when im out in the wilderness camping i don't want my Portable breaking down in the middle of a good movie.
This will work great for road trips and summer camping this year ..........Have a great summer and enjoy your Sony FX930.

PROS:
1) High quality 800 x 480 Resolution
2) Six Hour Battery
3) Nice Full Function Remote Control
4) 180 Swivel and Flip Screen
5) Advanced Soft Touch Keys
CONS:
None that I can find!
It is well made and the picture quality is amazing for a portable device, but it doesn't surprise me since it is a Sony. The 9" screen is much bigger than my last DVD player and it makes it easier to watch movies on a long car trip. Looking at this Sony, it is Obvious the resolution is much better! 800 x 480 Resolution shows every tiny detail in the movie. I had another brand DVD player that was not that old, and it was very noisy, at best gave me only 2 hours of battery and it's since quit working. This Sony is build so well I have a feeling it will last for a long time. I think one (of the Many) of my favorite features is the "Advanced Soft Touch Keys" where you just slide your finger over the volume bar and it raises or lowers the volume, or you can tap the plus or minus sign to go up and down by one

This is my 3rd portable DVD and they have come a long way. Battery life and unit size were important to me. I got that and great picture quality with this unit. I've made 4 flights and a road trip with it. The battery has done the job every time (have not tested 6 full hours). Lots of great features and very easy to use. The only design flaw so far is the location of one button on the right edge of the unit. So far I've hit the button with my thumb several times as I grabbed the unit moving it around during a movie, but it's easy to hit it again and restore the screen. If it lasts longer than my last Audiovox, I will be extremely happy.

I recently bought the FX-930. I was really surprised with the excellent quality of the image!! It's the best I've seen among portable DVDs. Sound is excellent (even when using the speakers). Most important thing, it supports 110-240V so that you can use it all over the world. Great device!!

Pro:
long battery life
louder/better speakers than the FX820
Con:
loud noises when the drive is seeking
larger screen is not always better
This is a good unit but not great. The screen being 9 inches is one inch bigger than the FX820 which is 8 inches. However the resolution is the same on both units so the image is actually more pixel-ated in a bigger screen. Please consider this before buying.
Good Luck.

I had been looking at the previous Sony model that had over 300 reviews and CNET had it as their choice in the portable DVD products in the 7"-10" screen sizes.
I am very please with the latest Sony model, what has changed is they made the screen an inch larger and placed touch buttons on the newer model. This FX 930 looks more modern, sleek although it is a little larger.
I am very pleased as I have played various DVD's, using full and normal settings that you can select for wide or standard screen formats. I have played many CD's from the actual artists to my own made CD's at home and played music files from my PC and taken along photos like a photo album when I want to share or have those close to me with me so to speak when traveling.
Sound is fine for the little speakers but 99% of the time I use really good headphones and you get two jacks so you can share when sitting with someone on a plane, train, or in the car as long as you are not driving. Had to toss that in! ;)

The Crutchfield price was listed as $129.99 at 11:15 PM PST 06/27/2009. This is the lowest price by far. Eagerly clicked the link only to find that the Crutchfield price is actually $189.99, which is far above even the average price. What gives?

pshanks, we're very sorry for the confusion. This was a bug on our end that resulted in the data not being updated for this particular store. Thanks for catching it! If it's any consolation the price was accurate at one point and it may fall back down there again.
