I did learn in my research that there is a definite difference in the appearance of images between plasma and LCD tvs and it's really a matter of personal preference, as well as the intended placement of the unit, and my preference leaned more toward the qualities of the plasma screen. If your room has a lot of windows and glare from outside light sources, an LCD might make more sense but I would definitely give the plasma a second look for the picture quality alone, if nothing else.

The remote will control 4 devices and does a decent job of controlling my home theater system. It does not seem to want to recognize my older model Dish Network box however so I still have to use 2 remotes (still better than 3 or 4). The remote is not back lit, making the use of some controls a bit challenging in the dark, especially the arrow keys which are surrounded on 3 sides by the Viera and SD card buttons. This is the only thing I have found so far that I would improve on if I could.

The speakers are of normal quality for a flat panel, if not a little better, and they are quite adequate for watching normal programming. The addition of a home theater system makes this baby rock when watching movies. I have it paired with a lower-end Samsung HT-Z310T and it sounds great in the medium sized room in which it is used.

policy with no questions asked. That was the kicker. I told myself that when I got home, if I was the least bit dissatisfied, I would return it and order the LCD I went n for. I also planned to mount the TV on a corner wall which required a $400 mounting bracket with swivel. The salesman talked me into signing up for the rewards program and I am glad he did becuase by doing so I qualified for some Panasonic tv/bracket combo deal that gave me roughy $300 off my purchase.
Got it home, mounted it that night. Cable came the next morning (make sure you ask for an HDMI cable to avoid having to purchase one). I couldn't be more pleased. I asked my brother to come over to watch the Masters and also to get his opinion on the picture as he has a 47" LCD 1080p. He said it looked perfect. He also mentioned to his wife that it may be time for them to go bigger.
Needless to say I did not return the TV and love it every second I get to watch it. I also purchased the extended warranty plan so I have an additional sense of security.

set with, the following comments are not meant necessarily as criticism of this particular model or brand, but I find it odd that: 1. You have to screw around with the format settings on all of the channels. I am hooked up to Comcast basic cable, and I can get like 90 channels, but they of course all vary in format. One channel might be 480i normal, the next 480i letterbox, the next 720p normal, 720p letterbox, 720p wide 1080i normal, 1080i wide. While the set can sense some of these and adjust accordingly, many others need to be set manually (about 50/50), so that even when it does correctly set to the optimal format, you still have to cycle through all of the format settings to be sure you have the best possible. I have found that even on the same station, the settings vary from program to program, even program to commercial and back, so that if you set it perfectly lets say 2 minutes before the start of what you actually intend to watch, you will have to cycle through the settings once your program starts to make sure you are using the optimal setting for that actual program. Don't even think about setting it during commercials, they vary like crazy. Now I know why I see so many sets left on the full wide setting even when the program material is not meant to be viewed like that. I figure most people just give up and watch stuff unnaturally stretched to fit the screen, rather than screw with the ever changing formats. I'm sorry, but by now you'd think they'd have a way to auto-sense these formats. It's not like this stuff just occurred and they haven't had a chance to adapt. 2. You have to manually set the clock. A small thing to be sure, but I have a 10 year old VCR that sets the clock itself. Unless you're gonna use the timer functions, it doesn't matter anyway. But seriously, is this now rocket science? Nothing like modern marvels! 3. Non-lit remote. Once again I have a few 10+ year old lighted remotes lying around. What a convenience! Fumble with this remote in the dark, and you'll wish for the good old days too. The following items are set specific (as far as I know) 4. A very nice operating manual that somehow doesn't explain what things do. Like the format settings, it explains them, but when you're done reading it, you still can only figure out things by screwing around until you can figure out what they're trying to tell you. 5. Deep sub-menus that you'll never figure out (see 4 above). My favorite is menu item is C.A.T.S. Yes, I have a few, but even they're unimpressed. I'm simply too tired to figure that one out. 6. Stupid remote design. Other than being non-lit, it is cluttered with Viera-Link buttons. If you are one of the very few people who actually use Viera-link, yay. For the rest of us, they're just in the way, and when you press one of them by mistake and end up in that useless menu, you will have to start wading through the menus all over again to get back to where you were when you made that fateful mistake. Over all a great TV, and for the price you won't do better. As far as the logic behind the flaws mentioned above, ya gotta wonder, what were they thinking when they did this. Maybe these basic design flaws don't exist in the $2500+ sets, but for that kind of money, I'll never know. If you remember the good old days, you'd bring home a TV, plug it in, hook up the cable, and you were done. If you had to set the color, contrast, etc., you generally only had to do it once and you were good to go. I feel so old...

You have to screw around with the format settings on all of the channels. I am hooked up to Comcast basic cable, and I can get like 90 channels, but they of course all vary in format. One channel might be 480i normal, the next 480i letterbox, the next 720p normal, 720p letterbox, 720p wide 1080i normal, 1080i wide. While the set can sense some of these and adjust accordingly, many others need to be set manually (about 50/50), so that even when it does correctly set to the optimal format, you still have to cycle through all of the format settings to be sure you have the best possible. I have found that even on the same station, the settings vary from program to program, even program to commercial and back, so that if you set it perfectly lets say 2 minutes before the start of what you actually intend to watch, you will have to cycle through the settings once your program starts to make sure you are using the optimal setting for that actual program. Don't even think about setting it during commercials, they vary like crazy. Now I know why I see so many sets left on the full wide setting even when the program material is not meant to be viewed like that. I figure most people just give up and watch stuff unnaturally stretched to fit the screen, rather than screw with the ever changing formats. I'm sorry, but by now you'd think they'd have a way to auto-sense these formats. It's not like this stuff just occurred and they haven't had a chance to adapt. 2. You have to manually set the clock. A small thing to be sure, but I have a 10 year old VCR that sets the clock itself. Unless you're gonna use the timer functions, it doesn't matter anyway. But seriously, is this now rocket science? Nothing like modern marvels! 3. Non-lit remote. Once again I have a few 10+ year old lighted remotes lying around. What a convenience! Its been now 5 months since we have had it and no image burnt into screen. Now this past weekend we had an accident with the kids playing around the tv, And boom a head goes into the screen, the scrren shatters, but i loved watching this tv so much in gonna go and get the same one. LOVE IT

There is an option to scroll a white bar across the TV as part of the anti-retention setup menu, however the manual doesn't say how often this should be done. If I am watching a letterbox movie, should I take a break halfway through and scroll the white bar? I've read online that scrolling the white bar actually reduces pixel life.
Overall I am happy with the TV so far, but I really don't want to be worring about burn-in.

The only complaint that is that I have an HD feed from Direct TV (yes, I use HDMI and didn't pay $50 bucks for a cable, paid far less on eBay). The remote code 10250, plus the second 960 code doesn't allow for changing inputs with the universal Directv remote (that's no fault of Panasonic). If someone knows the workaround please post!!

are several ZOOM settings, if you are still on SDTV with 4:3 frame size picture inputs, try the "JUST" zoom setting. It gets rid of the black side bars with minimal distortion of whatever image is centered in your screen. The picture looks pretty good that way.
SDTV signals are also superbly displayed on this plasma, it looks REALLY good. Can't wait to get the HDTV satellite hookup!
The sound? How in blazes do you expect high quality sound in such a thin chassis? Until they come out with planar ribbon speaker elements which are CRAZY expensive, don't expect the sound to be any better than older tube type TV's. That being said, I was very pleased with the sound. Dialog was clear and intelligible and fine for regular TV viewing. I do have a Yamaha/Klipsch home theater sound system which I only turn on for DVD/ BluRay movies for that home theater experience. This TV's sound for regular network programming is more than adequate. Cranking up the Yamaha is pure overkill for that purpose.
Would I buy this TV again? You bet!
Would I recommend it to my boss, church pastor, best friend? Absolutely!
So if you want a GORGEOUS 50" picture, what are you waiting for? Go get this baby! You'll love it, & your friends don't need to know it's not a 1080p.

From there I Googled specific issues/topics and then ran across blogs and forums.

My priority list:
1. Great picture
2. Reliability
3. Reasonably price
4. Ports for my equipment

I narrowed down the field to plasma, because my family stretches all around the living room from different angles. It also, in my opinion, looked the best and was the best product of the 2 (vs. LCD) from research.

I settled on a 50 inch because of my room dimensions, and at that size 720p would look great if I decided on that resolution, and finally anything over 50 inch was very expensive.

The whole 720p/1080p debate was confusing, I will admit. But I saw little difference when looking at models that I knew were connected to HD. I also looked at the Circuit City display at my local store and they were right in presenting the incredible difference due to signal (SD vs. HD). Since it appeared that difference stations/broadcasts sent out signals at different resolutions, I could easily pick up another TV in 3-5 years at the 1080p if everything was made just for that.

While I would have gone for 1080p, the price leap was astronomical. I couldn’t justify it to myself since I have a family and am the only one working.

Panasonic (TH-50PX80U, TH-50PZ80U, TH-50PZ85U) and Samsung (PN50A510, PN50A450, PN50A550, and PN50A650) became my favorite two brands to look at.
For Samsung, they had the edge in features and ports, but Panasonic was a better picture.

From there, I took a break and looked at entertainment centers. Anything less then $300 was made of particle board, so I went to my local “Solid Woods” center, and picked up a real full hardwood cherry for $150 more then I was about to dish out. This occurred after looking online (Overstock, Amazon) and local (Best Buy, Target, Wal-Mart, Sears).

Just as I was about to look for sales, the new Panny TC-P50X1 came out at my local Sears and Best Buy. Comparing it to their previous model series, this was the one for me. Reliability, great color, great contrast ratio 30000:1, good darks, and plenty of ports (3 HDMI, 2 Component, 2 Composite, and DIG opt out). But, it was 720p. And new. Go for it. I did. I had it delivered for free, and the BB knocked off 100 due to them lowering the price the next week. I ordered pizza and carefully installed the mount.

I picked up a Level Mount DC65T tilt for screens 33-65 inches. It was very reasonably priced through Wal-Mart. I didn’t want a 35-50 inch because that would be on the border of what my 50 in. TV could take. This thing is pure steel. It’s heavy and made of parts that will only melt off the wall. I think the wall might fall off before it ever moves. The in mount level works well, although I had my own, and the stud finder is barely adequate. My iSensor stud finder had conflicting ideas around outlets and I really want to tear down that wall just to prove to myself that one of the studs is not 16 inches away from another! Stupid builders! Anyway, I was just barely able to mount it to 3 studs. The TV is really light, I could have lifted it myself but I didn’t dare. It locked in very well in 6 different ways. Tilting is a one time thing but requires two people. My hands were just big enough to fit in behind the TV.

The ports on the TC-P50X1 are on the back right and easily accessible. There are a few on the side too. On the left hand side are easily accessible TV buttons if you lose your remote every few weeks like I do.

I had mapped out all the connections to my equipment:
-Wii with an upgraded component cord
-Pioneer VSX 515 Audio Receiver (no HDMI)
-a new SONY DVD player DVP-NS700H
-a new Vip722 from Dish
-my SONY amp

I had to read through all of the instructional manuals to update/relearn all of the menus, features, setups, etc.

I ordered 2 HDMI through Monoprice.com, the new Wii component cable, a Digital optical cable, a new component, an extended telephone line, and an iPod stereo output all for under $40.

The Panny TV was very easy to connect to, I still wish they had an aux out but that’s becoming old school! The menus are easy to scroll through and you can change settings very easily. Check the online owner’s manual (I did the same for the Vip722 Dish receiver and SONY DVD player to get an idea of what to expect and for the spec section).

Colors are wonderful, NASCAR Sunday was so real. It does all the thinking/processing of different signals very quickly as it upscales and downscales and pulls 3:2 menus blah blah blah. I was wondering if I should let the Dish receiver output 720p or 1080i, but I could see no difference either way, nor could my wife. I reasoned to leave it on 720p output because of fewer steps to get to the 1368x768 res of this TV.

I am completely impressed with this P50X1, with HD signals, with the new technologies, compared to the black and white 16 inch I grew up with, or the 22 inch color my parents bought, etc. The jump between SD to HD is huge, the jump between various broadcast signals and various program signals in 720p or 1080i, at the 50 inch stage, is negligible in my opinion. I save money all along the way by researching and asking questions (470 from Dish by asking them to match what DirecTV would have given me...free installation, new receiver, new intro packages, etc). The speakers are fine, what do you expect on a flat screen? They really work well. I use them when I don’t want to turn on my sound system (to keep things quiet).

My lasting impressions will be that the P50X1 is built by a company that has been making plasmas a long time, and the previous year’s model, from which it was built, was highly successful because of price/product ratio. Time and time again, people pointed out in real life, forums, blogs, and reviews, that you either have to wait 3+ years for broadcast stations/satellite to set up an HD standard for signal broadcast, or you have to get a tv over 50 inches to really just BEGIN to see a small difference in 1080 and 720. Now I’m not an HD expert, this is my first one, I don’t buy them to review them. I’m just an Language Arts teacher, (try to find grammar mistakes above if you’re bored), but, this is a great respectable buy for most consumers at this point in time if you want to pay about 1 grand for a tv. Enough said. I’m going to leave my computer and go enjoy it right now!
Oh, btw, I’m waiting on Blue-ray for a few years before I buy one, but with HDMI, it will enter into my system with ease. I took my SONY DVR and put it in the master bedroom with my CRT flatscreen.

From there I Googled specific issues/topics and then ran across blogs and forums.

My priority list:
1. Great picture
2. Reliability
3. Reasonably price
4. Ports for my equipment

I narrowed down the field to plasma, because my family stretches all around the living room from different angles. It also, in my opinion, looked the best and was the best product of the 2 (vs. LCD) from research.

I settled on a 50 inch because of my room dimensions, and at that size 720p would look great if I decided on that resolution, and finally anything over 50 inch was very expensive.

The whole 720p/1080p debate was confusing, I will admit. But I saw little difference when looking at models that I knew were connected to HD. I also looked at the Circuit City display at my local store and they were right in presenting the incredible difference due to signal (SD vs. HD). Since it appeared that difference stations/broadcasts sent out signals at different resolutions, I could easily pick up another TV in 3-5 years at the 1080p if everything was made just for that.

While I would have gone for 1080p, the price leap was astronomical. I couldn’t justify it to myself since I have a family and am the only one working.

Panasonic (TH-50PX80U, TH-50PZ80U, TH-50PZ85U) and Samsung (PN50A510, PN50A450, PN50A550, and PN50A650) became my favorite two brands to look at.
For Samsung, they had the edge in features and ports, but Panasonic was a better picture.

From there, I took a break and looked at entertainment centers. Anything less then $300 was made of particle board, so I went to my local “Solid Woods” center, and picked up a real full hardwood cherry for $150 more then I was about to dish out. This occurred after looking online (Overstock, Amazon) and local (Best Buy, Target, Wal-Mart, Sears).

Just as I was about to look for sales, the new Panny TC-P50X1 came out at my local Sears and Best Buy. Comparing it to their previous model series, this was the one for me. Reliability, great color, great contrast ratio 30000:1, good darks, and plenty of ports (3 HDMI, 2 Component, 2 Composite, and DIG opt out). But, it was 720p. And new. Go for it. I did. I had it delivered for free, and the BB knocked off 100 due to them lowering the price the next week. I ordered pizza and carefully installed the mount.

I picked up a Level Mount DC65T tilt for screens 33-65 inches. It was very reasonably priced through Wal-Mart. I didn’t want a 35-50 inch because that would be on the border of what my 50 in. TV could take. This thing is pure steel. It’s heavy and made of parts that will only melt off the wall. I think the wall might fall off before it ever moves. The in mount level works well, although I had my own, and the stud finder is barely adequate. My iSensor stud finder had conflicting ideas around outlets and I really want to tear down that wall just to prove to myself that one of the studs is not 16 inches away from another! Stupid builders! Anyway, I was just barely able to mount it to 3 studs. The TV is really light, I could have lifted it myself but I didn’t dare. It locked in very well in 6 different ways. Tilting is a one time thing but requires two people. My hands were just big enough to fit in behind the TV.

The ports on the TC-P50X1 are on the back right and easily accessible. There are a few on the side too. On the left hand side are easily accessible TV buttons if you lose your remote every few weeks like I do.

I had mapped out all the connections to my equipment:
-Wii with an upgraded component cord
-Pioneer VSX 515 Audio Receiver (no HDMI)
-a new SONY DVD player DVP-NS700H
-a new Vip722 from Dish
-my SONY amp

I had to read through all of the instructional manuals to update/relearn all of the menus, features, setups, etc.

I ordered 2 HDMI through Monoprice.com, the new Wii component cable, a Digital optical cable, a new component, an extended telephone line, and an iPod stereo output all for under $40.

The Panny TV was very easy to connect to, I still wish they had an aux out but that’s becoming old school! The menus are easy to scroll through and you can change settings very easily. Check the online owner’s manual (I did the same for the Vip722 Dish receiver and SONY DVD player to get an idea of what to expect and for the spec section).

Lastly I put on Backdraft. Excellent movie with this tv, checked out the first fire scene where the guy parks his car and opens his door to his home and then gets blown up! (Fire color & Smoke was perfect in night scene). Next part was where the kid watches his dad get killed saving people and the guy takes the Time Magazine picture. Wow that scene was awesome because you can see ALL the discoloration of the bricks right before the building blows up!!!

PANASONIC has out done themselves with base model (they kept it basic no bells, just whistles), and will put a lot of other high end tv's to shame! I noticed someone else just wrote a review and said that he recommends the Geek Squad to Calibrate the tv.? Ah I don't know about that but I am thinking about calling because Best Buy did offer to take off $100 to have the Geek Squad come out to do it. I just may call them up... lol Doubt it. Take your time Read the Menu & get used to it and you CAN'T GO WRONG WITH THIS UNIT. Think of it this way you will spend 98,000 hrs watching programs or playing video game in 720P or 1080i (there will be no 1080p content from your cable or sat provider in ur Plazma or LCD's lifetime), and maybe you will spend 8,000 hrs. watching Blu Ray movies (Now You DO THE MATH) (This plasma has a 100,00 hr shelf life). Now ask yourself do you really need to spend an extra $1,000 for that 1080P.... Trust me you don't, there is nothing going on with 1080P that 1080i won't cover at least for human eyes! Any Aliens out there? I'm sure they are but we can live with out 1080P in this recession!!! Listen to me now I sound like a idiot.. oh boy, now back to the review.

Sorry gamers I did not get to hook my PS3 up to the tv yet to check out the games but I'm sure from what I can see it's a keeper!

Ah I don't know about that but I am thinking about calling because Best Buy did offer to take off $100 to have the Geek Squad come out to do it. I just may call them up... lol Doubt it. Take your time Read the Menu & get used to it and you CAN'T GO WRONG WITH THIS UNIT. Think of it this way you will spend 98,000 hrs watching programs or playing video game in 720P or 1080i (there will be no 1080p content from your cable or sat provider in ur Plazma or LCD's lifetime), and maybe you will spend 8,000 hrs. watching Blu Ray movies (Now You DO THE MATH) (This plasma has a 100,00 hr shelf life). Now ask yourself do you really need to spend an extra $1,000 for that 1080P.... Trust me you don't, there is nothing going on with 1080P that 1080i won't cover at least for human eyes! Any Aliens out there? I'm sure they are but we can live with out 1080P in this recession!!! Listen to me now I sound like a idiot.. oh boy, now back to the review.

Sorry gamers I did not get to hook my PS3 up to the tv yet to check out the games but I'm sure from what I can see it's a keeper!
