I had been doing lots of research in order to buy a scanner which is compatible with my Mac. This one was chosen after much thought. And it is easy to be installed and works very well with my Mac. I haven't tried it with windows system yet. Hope it also works well. Definitely worth the money I paid.

Immediately after installing the scanner, I was disappointed by the ArcSoft software that had been installed. It continued to generate a pop-up window that demanded that I set the text size for it's windows, even though I'd never started the software myself. Worse, the setting apparently did not save -- the window kept re-appearing. What's sad is that that software is not even something I wanted to install. It was not described in the physical documentation, was not documented in the electronic manual, and I had to comb through forums to find out even *where* it had been installed. That's an indication of poorly designed and poorly delivered software with total disregard for the user. Epson should at least have provided more information about it before it was installed, and in the manual so that it could be trouble-shot. It sure soured my experience of their scanner, regardless of how good the equipment is. Including software that they keep such poor track of is a mistake. As well,

Installed the software and began scanning. Haven't needed to use the color enhancer feature, yet. Scanner is working just as advertized. Am in the process of scanning several years of prints into the computer.

First, the scanner works beautifully, looks beautiful, great value. But... If you have Windows 7, you're going to be greatly disappointed. NONE of the extra software works under W7, and worse, the quick buttons don't work either (confirmed with Epson tech support). To be fair, the Epson Scan software which is the essential software, works great under W7. I'm willing to overlook the freebie software, less happy about no buttons, but at least there's hope they'll update the button software at some future date to be W7 compatible. I doubt the freebie software will ever be available. (The OCR software had file dates from 2005...think they'll update that anytime soon??) If the OCR scanning software, buttons, etc. are essential for you on your W7 system, look elsewhere for a scanner. If you don't care about that, this is a really nice scanner. UPDATE: Newest drivers have fixed the buttons issue! Woo-hoo! But, the extra software (OCR, image manager, etc.) remains unusable via incompatibility

This is a nice scanner and I appreciate that the buttons are on the front end instead of behind the unit. What I would change is the way it hooks up, which is on the side in the front. The included cables should be longer because of this design. Also, you have to lift it from the side and I would have preferred that it open straight up. I can't really complain because overall, it's a dandy scanner and it does a great job. I would definately recommend the purchase of this affordable scanner.

I have a rather ordinary Vario computer that has never complained about any installation of software or hardware until I tried the V30 (also goes for the V300--same thing). The drivers would say that they had installed, but when I clicked the v30 icon, it said they had not installed. After an hour on the phone (my dime!) with support, the nice guy at the other end put me on hold while he went to "find other resources." Of course the phone line dropped! Even though they gave me a return call an hour or so later, I really did not want to spend any more time on something that should have worked immediately. Back in the box and away went the scanner.

I've had this scanner for a couple of weeks and am pleased. Pretty much exactly what it claims to be, which is not as common these days as you might think. Pros: LED illumination, so no warm up (I don't scan all that often, so this is very helpful). Resident software has a small footprint and uses few computer resources. Image quality is good for a low end scanner and scan times are reasonable. Cons: None significant. Lightweight and obviously not a heavy duty unit, but seems better built than several other scanners in the same price range. Also, the power and USB connectors are poorly located, but I can live with that.

My particular interest in purchasing a scanner was for all the photos I have collected in my life time. I wanted to be able to get them into my computer for presevation and to make discs of them. My main concern was that with so many photos would I be able to scan more than one at a time which was the problem with the older scanners I have tried. I found that 3-3x5's or 4x6's fit at a time and the scanner does recognize them as seperate photos so no problem there. I have windows Vista and was up and running in just a few minutes after installing the software. Excellent purchase.

I was looking for an inexpensive Linux-compatible flatbed scanner, and after a fair amount of research I picked this one and am quite pleased. It doesn't work out of the box in Linux, but if you do a Google search for "avasys linux scanner driver", you'll find the place where the driver can be downloaded. The driver is accompanied by a scan utility called iscan, which offers basic features, but you can also use the much more powerful xsane, which should be available for any Linux distribution. The results look fine in both color and greyscale. I've been experimenting with scanning a book at 300 dpi, and feeding the output into the tesseract OCR program, and the error rate is surprisingly low. I've only had the scanner a couple of days so can't comment on its longevity, but so far it's good.

I have had 2 of these and they have both done the same thing. They work for a while and as I am scanning, they freeze. I had thought the first one may have been a lemon or meant for casual usage. I had scanned over 4000 pictures using the old one but the second one is doing the same thing and I haven't scanned nearly that many. So very disappointed in this product! Totally unreliable!

received package in 3 days, free shipping. box was light, since scanner was light. hooked up scanner to power outlet and connected USB cable to laptop running linux ubuntu 8.04 Hardy. download drivers for the Epson Perfection V30 from [...]and esci-interpreter-gt-f720_0.0.1-2_i386.deb (156,404 bytes). installed these 2 .deb packages on laptop. launched command iscan to start the scanner; worked. tested by scanning a hardcopy color photo with the default 300 dpi; the scan (in .png format) looked great; file size about 5 MB. tried higher resolution 1200 dpi; file size was much larger, but not better quality at regular photo size. scanned write-on transparencies written with color marker pens (black, green, red, blue) as color documents; results (in .png format) were great. even at 50 dpi, the scans of these transparencies were nice. the file size was small, about 300 KB, allowing for quick upload to mediawiki. it appears that there is no option to scan into pdf under linux;

I too have found the support for this scanner from Epson to be way below sub-par. The printer was purchased 6 months ago and worked fantastic, without a flaw on my Windows XP laptop. Unfortunately, that laptop had a very small hard drive so I had to purchase a new laptop. The new laptop is a Dell Studio 17 with Windows Vista Home Premium 32-bit and it simply will not install on this new PC. I have uninstalled it completely, wiping all traces from the registry and hard drive and reinstalled no less than 10 times. Contacting Epson provided little more than instructions to repeat everything I have done to date and their last email instruction told me to find a solution for emz file extensions as they said that was the files I was showing them. They don't even realize that the emz files were the screen captures I cut and pasted into the email to show them exactly the error messages I was encountering. MS Outlook 2007 converts images pasted into the email body into emz files. The whole ordeal

I am very happy with this scanner. For the price you can't beat it. Scanning is very fast and easy. My grandchildren could figure this out. I had to retire my old Epson Scanner Photo Scanner 3170 and the Hp Photo Smart Scanner. HP does not make quality products anymore. I tried an HP Scanner and it was horrible. I also think it is terrible when you have a defective product that the company's warranty policy is sending you a refurbished one after you pay good money for a new one. I have learned to buy the service contracts for some electronics. But anyway this is a good product and excellent buy for people that want a good scanner and cannot afford an expensive one. Like one review said it is small enough to take anywhere. Happy scanning.

I am running Vista Home Premium 32-bit on a Dell XPS-410 PC with duo 2.66 GHz processors, this PC is no slouch! The drivers simply would not install and neither Dell phone nor E-mail support had a solution to the problem. FWIW, my wife has a similar PC and I had the same problem with her system. I've returned the scanner to Amazon for a refund and can only say that Epson support is worthless!

This is the least expensive scanner that Epson offers and I am very satisfied with the features, bundled software and the quality of scanning. Used with a PowerPC Mac system running OS 10.5.6. No problems whatsoever.

So far this scanner works as advertised. I needed one to work with XP on my new PC. My old computer has Win 98SE with a Visioneer 3300. That scanner has been an excellent workhorse for me. It never failed me. I'll still use it some as a backup. This new scanner is my first Epson product. I may get an Epson printer also when my trusty HP 882C dies on me. It looks like no one makes printers with much quality any more. That's a shame. They scam and gouge you on the ink cartridges. There are complaints about the placement of the cables on the Epson V30. I needed the scanner turned sideways anyway and that puts the cables at the right rear at the back. this orientation allows for the scanner to be opened from the front instead of the side. The buttons are on the right rear and are still very accessible. I have no complaints about the cables.

We have been very pleased with this scanner. It was easy to setup (for the Mac OS X) and the software has worked well. It is simple to use. Even my 80 year old mother who is not all that astute with computers has found it easy to use. She is scanning in all our old family photos. It is a great and affordable scanner for the techie and the novice alike.

does what it is supposed to do. no frills, good scan, scans fast enough for pictures, why the complaints, its your printer not the scanner.
nobody needs useless frills, at this price point.

It's not obvious that there are two versions of this scanner: V30 and V300. AFAIK, the only difference is that the V300 includes the attachment for scanning slides and costs more. I didn't realize the difference until I unpacked the scanner. I'm OK with the result … less (and unneeded) features for less money; but it could have been clearer what was going on.

I haven't had time to use this scanner much, but preliminary tests are very positive. It definitely outperforms the ancient HP scanner it's replacing. One disappointment is with the included software. The included version of Abbyy Finereader is ancient, several major versions behind the current and no discount on upgrade. Seems to work OK, but I think that they should disclose that you are not getting the latest.

As I am not super computer "techie", it is very important for me to find equipment that is functional, as well as user-friendly. This scanner by Epson scored maximum points on both fronts. I found it easy to install both the hardware and the software. Once it was set-up, I was able to easily scan photographs and other documents, without having to even refer to the manual! The software is relatively intuitive to use and guides you in the right direction when you scanning different types of documents. And the price was extraordinary! Perhaps a heavier-duty scanner may be required for some business or office use, but, for personal use, I find this product more than meets my needs.

I love my Epson Perfection v30 scanner. It replaced a trusty Epson Perfection 2400 Photo that I have had for about 3 years. The quality of scanned images is better with this new scanner, thanks to the higher DPI rating. And, thanks to the new LED scan technology, there is no longer any warm-up time at all and, on top of that, once the scanning starts, It scans faster than my Perfection 2400 Photo. Finally, it is quieter. It is a winner on all three of these counts compared to my old scanner, no doubt.

Plus, at just under 1 ½" high it is less than half as tall as the Perfection 2400 Photo. This, coupled with the fact that the top opens across the width of the scanner as opposed to along the length, means that this scanner works much, MUCH better for me on the wall-mounted shelf in my home office where I like to put a scanner. This alone has me sold on this scanner as a replacement for my old one, which was always a little hard to get to and kind of "clunky" to use on the shelf.

Finally,

I had recently bought the Canon CanoScan 4400F, and wish I had waited. I mean, I just got it, and it's no longer available. The cost was 20% more, and worth 40% less than this V30. The main difference between the two is that the Canon is bulky, in the way, and annoying to connect. The only appeal to the Canon is that it can scan negatives. But, if that is something you don't need, this is the one to get. If a negative something you do need, simply spend a few dollars more for the Epson Perfection V300 Photo Color Scanner

The V30 does quite a bit for such a little investment. It's easy to setup, use, and store in a home office. It also replaces a need for fax, photo copier, as well as additional pdf creation and photo editing software. It does it all for you.

I am a web designer so I use many devices for many things. This comes in handy due to it's portability. I can actually take this with me to a client and scan items while there. Using my other scanner as such would not

This is an standout product and an excellent value for the price. Installation is very straightforward -- just pop in the CD, hit agree a few times, and you're done. As noted in the instructions, don't plug the scanner into your PC (via a USB cable) until the software has been loaded.

My favorite feature is the ease at which you can scan to a PDF. I do that a lot and have been using an HP all-in-one. Not bad, but the Epson puts it to shame not only in terms of scan speed (very speedy!) but also in the Epson's ability to create a compact PDF file. Scanning the same one-page text file yielded a 24k PDF using the Epson, but a 103k PDF using the HP (setting and resolution were the same).

The scanner has a dedicated button to scan to PDF. Nice touch, although I find it easier to bring up the app using a mouse click.

Color photo work is excellent as well -- the color fixing abilities actually works as claimed. There are different modes that have various options. They range from "home" mode

The Epson V30 does a nice job of combining an easy-to-use scanner for those who don't want to have to tweak - just scan please! - with a scanner that has the bells and whistles for those who want to do more.

I used the scanner to scan photos and documents (as a jpeg and also as a PDF). I did not use the email feature (as it basically uses Outlook and I don't use that email package on my home computer).

Photo Scanning

I tried the Epson with a variety of photos. Photos consisted of several photos of Bryce Canyon in winter (contrast of snow and colors), your basic Grand Canyon photos, a couple of typical people photos (a couple of people standing in a dark room and also photos where the light was more evenly distributed). I also had some photos that had spots in them (black marks in the sky) to test the dust removal option and an old yellowing photo (40+ years old) of a couple to test the color restoration features.

Epson's default mode is Full Auto mode. If you don't have any issues

I just got this and have been trying it out. As I surmised, it is identical to the V300 except there is no negative holder in the box. The driver CDROM and all documentation lists both models. I'm using this with Photoshop and Indesign to make personal studies for portrait drawing practice, using art book and magazine images for source material. I was holding my breath to make sure the TIFF file type is included with this version, and it is (in the professional scan mode.) Fabulously smooth images made from ordinary newspaper color ad inserts using only 800 dpi. You can select various destination image types, including up to 48-bit color and up to 12,800 dpi (in professional mode). TIFF files are rather large, but I plan to dump them as soon as I print the cropped images. (After I draw, I no longer need the images.) Of course, also does jpeg format (default) and has a tremendous range of custom formatting before saving, as well as ultra simple 'point and shoot' scanning. Also has customizable
