****THIS WORKS WITH VERIZON DSL****
At first I read all the reviews and was put off by all the negative reviews, but I decided, however, to purchase this anyway. After almost 2 hours trying to get this to install properly, a thought occurred to me. YOU MUST UNPLUG YOUR OLD ROUTER/MODEM FOR 4-6 HOURS PRIOR TO ATTEMPTING INSTALLATION OF THIS. This is because Verizon will release your IP Address after this time period. I have no idea if this will work with anything other than Verizon. I was about to give up, but then I got it to work. I unplugged my modem/router when I went to bed, then when I got up in the morning I tried to install the software and it finally installed. After it installed it I had to type in 192.168.0.1 in Internet Explorer(Default Username is:admin, default password is:password)and click on "Setup Wizard". Click "Next" and then click "YES", and then I was finally connected to the internet. About 15 minutes after I started in the morning it was installed. GOOD LUCK! While the signal strength to my laptop and wireless cards is not as strong as my old Wireless-G(4 bars instead of 5), because it is Wireless-N it is still much quicker.
this modem worked great for 9 months. easy configuration and setup. worked fine with ATT. but, the thing runs HOT. not sure if the heat is what caused the failure. but, after 9 months of solid use, i started getting intermittent wired port disconnects. wired ports 2-4 completely failed after 3 days. port 1 barely works. The wireless side of the router worked for another week, now it is failing as well; intermittent connections and VERY slow. i've contacted netgear and they are sending me a swap unit. the rma process was easy..good customer service. so .. we'll see. anyway ... if it didn't die i would it would be great. nice router/modem... but appears to have a pretty high failure rate.
I bought it to hopefully replace my DSL modem that seemed to be getting slower and slower, when I went to set it up I ran into some problems. Apparently the modem portion does not like working with Verizon, if you get your IP address dynamically. So, don't buy this if that is your situation and you have verizon as well.
I loved this thing for the two months it worked. Now the wireless has virtually stopped working with intermittent connections and completely variable strength. Nothing has changed in my house or in my configuration. About to start the hassle of warranty service. I don't even care if the service is great - bottom line is the modem did not last!
We bought this a couple of months ago and were never really happy as we kept dropping the connection intermittently, often 10-20 times per hour, then not at all for a couple of hours. In fact, we were researching routers to replace it. Then my wife got in a cleaning mode and moved all the furniture in the bedroom where the router is located. In doing so, she separated the router and a clock radio which were about a foot apart. Now they are about four feet apart. Voila!! We now rarely have a dropped connection, none in the last three days. I'm sure there was some sort of interference earlier but that has now been solved and we are happy.
this router does good but i have to resete it ever so often maybe its something to do with the internet and not the router idk.i dont get a very good signal off it even tho im only about 60 feet from it but it does work good i guess
Was looking for a router / modem to replace my ATT 2Wire (never buy a 2Wire -went through two in three years all failed) so I saw Netgear, reliable name, right? Not so on this equipment! Easy setup, but when testing the speed on speedtest.net and pcpitstop.com the speeds were horrendously slow. I just figured it was a poor reading. Had the Netgear for three days and my wife said her internet kept dropping and was painfully slow on her laptop. So I read the reviews and it was given 2.5 stars out of 5, pretty bad in my eyes. same issues, slow speeds and dropped internet on wireless (we have four wireless in the house). I was told it was my ISP not the router / modem. So I read about Actiontec (4.5 out of 5) and bought it. Wow. Now this is what I expected and for $30 less. So bypass the 2Wire, the Netgear and get an Actiontec. (see review under Actiontec) and don't let anybody tell you it's all your ISP - I learned a lesson.
The 2 Wire product that is issued by AT&T is a very unreliable piece of equipment. I went through 2 @ $ 100.00 a piece before replacing it with the Netgear. After a lesson in networking I got the Netgear up and on line. If I had I the slightest bit of experience it would have installed in 10 minutes. The Best Buy store matched a $ 99.00 price and sent me off with a great deal of confidence and it all was for the better.
Ok, first off let me say that I have my own business catering to home networks and desktop computers... with that stated please be assured I know something about computers and networking... I bought this router in June of 2009 and now Port #4 is bad, it has reduced its' connection speed to 10 mbps (not 100). This started after 8 mos of use... now this was not a lightning strike or anything. This router also didn't like me putting range of IP's to block (i.e. I block lots of IP ranges from other countries). So this function in this particular router was completely useless. When i tried to confront netgear about, they of course gave the run around on the issue indicated it was not their issue. I have had 3 other netgears and I'm tired of dealing with companies that have no trust in their product, hence the 1 yr or less warranty they give. The other 3 routers have crapped out in about 1 to 2 yrs of service and again, all netgear. My next purchase is going to be the Belkin N router, at least I know I can return it for a replacement if it goes bad... EVER. BUT, if you are in the market in getting a router, DO YOUR HOMEWORK, find out which location offers good extended warranties if you think you need one.. i.e. 2 yr warranty for about 23 bucks or 3 yr for 15 bucks.. depends on where you shop. so just depends on how you feel, but I find investing in an extended warranty might be smart... please ask for details in the store you go in though, some details may very and you may not like those stipulations... I'm giving this a 1 star rating not only based on this router but prior experiences with netgear routers... I'm getting away from netgear for good.
I have had several modems, routers, and modem/wireless combinations. This one is the best by far. If you know your internet provider username and password, you can set it up in 10 min. I connected three computers. An Apple "which I recomend to everyone" a PC and A wirless Sony laptop with windows 7. Everything works great. The range is very good and connection is fast.
I purchased it and had no problems set it up. The speed and range was great however, later that night I started having problems staying connected to the internet. The next morning the Netgear would not connect at all. To trouble the box I reconnect my old box and it connect with no problems. I am going to return it as soon as possible. Save your time and money.
I already have a functioning 2Wire modem, but I wanted to upgrade a few things it doesn't provide such as increased security, Denial of Service attacks, QoS, and 802.11n speeds.

The setup was ok since I had all of the info beforehand like username and password. I swapped out the old modem for the new one and ran the cd. I have 2 ethernet ports on my motherboard so I had a little trouble figuring out which one was being used. Once I finished setting it up, I still couldn't get to the internet. The tray icon was saying I needed to open a browser and connect to my IP, which stumped me for a bit since the router was giving me the all green. I verified by running the test process within the router home page and everything looked good. After about 30 minutes of tinkering with settings and rebooting my computer, I decided to reboot the router. That did the trick....guess applying the changes isn't enough. Wireless setup was a snap. I have 5 laptops in the family all running every OS known to man and all work fine....yes even Ubuntu.

I like the QoS feature because I like to game and my daughter likes watching streamed video which hogs the bandwidth. I set my MAC address to have highest priority and tada no more lag playing games. Oh, I'm running Windows 7 Professional 64 bit, wife's laptop is Vista Home Premium 64 bit, daughter is XP Home 32 bit, my dev box is Ubuntu 9.10, and I have a PS3. All connected in 5 minutes or less.
Thought it would work and it didn't. Tech support from Verizon and NETGEAR could not make it connect with my DSL. I will forget about trying a modem/router combo. This may be a good modem/router, it just won't work with Verizon.
I've always heard that Netgear was a pretty good brand. You wouldn't know it by the trouble I've had with this model of modem. My little 2Wire DSL modem that I had worked infinitely better than this. It was pretty much plug and play, while the Netgear modem was difficult to configure. Actually this was my second Netgear modem. The first one I had burned out after only a day or two. I took it back and exchanged it for new one. I should have seen what was coming and changed brands right then.

I was finally able to configure the second one after fighting it for I don't know how long. I'm no techie, but I wouldn't consider myself a newbie either.

I've had this modem for about six months, and I've never been completely satisfied. In the past month, this modem's performance has diminished to a crawl. My wife who doesn't use the web very much got so disgusted that she told me to go buy a new modem despite this one only being a few months old.

I had pretty good luck with the 2Wire. It finally gave out after 2 years of almost constant service. Now that we have more computers and other internet ready systems in the house, I thought it a good idea to get something that could handle more output and broadcast a stronger signal. This Netgear modem was a horrific choice.

If you've made it all the way through this epic novel, take my advice: Buy some other brand of modeml!! Otherwise you'll only go away disgusted.
Hello, despite advertising that it works with all major ISPs, this did not work with ATT in San Francisco. After two weeks via phone, chat & email support I gave up and returned it and stuck with a ATT supplied Westell Modem and a simple router. Netgear support tried hard but would never acknowledge that a major ISP is not supported.
This modem router is rubbish. I payed $155 au for this device and it stopped working after 3 weeks of use. It's a pity i purchased it 9 months ago but just started using it 3 weeks ago when my linksys modem router gateway was destroyed by lightening along with my PCS. Try finding a place to return the device in Melbourne Australia. I had connection issues with the wireless network when 2 computers are using it at the same time. It gets very hot and eventually cooks itself. I did upgrade the firmware which did nothing to extend its life. Now i'm using a Linksys WAG54G2 without any problems. Up and running in 10 minutes. Bottom line is this product is a waste of money.
