I've had little luck getting Acronis True Image Home to create and validate a back-up of files on my system. The system consists of a Gateway SX2800-01 (Intel Core 2 Quad running on Windows Home Premium 64-bit) and an external Western Digital MyBook harddrive connected via USB2. I have ATI Home set up to run daily incremental back-ups. Sometimes the increments are created and sometimes the back-up fails (about 60 -40%). The cause of the problem is a "cannot read Sector 63 error". If you Google this error or visit the Acronis website you will discover that this is a bug in the program. [I have run CHDSK, etc and have found no bad sectors on either the PC or the external harddrive]. I also checked the "Ignore Bad Sectors" and "Don't show messages and dialogs during processing (silent mode)" boxes in the ATI settings but the "Sector 63" error is not ignored. I attempted to install the latest update for ATI Home 2009 [build 9796] - hoping this would eliminate the problem. After getting

Acronis Backup worked flawlessly when I changed drives. I had no issues making an image and restoring my newer 320 gb hard drive. Really saved me a lot of work.

I've used many minimizers over the years and this is by far the best. It's comfortable even after a long day, has great coverage, and looks very natural - it doesn't give you that squished sports bra look.

Isn't it a cardinal sin that a software you buy to protect you against failure causes a catastrophic failure itself? That's what happened to me with this piece of crap software (excuse my French). After following its instructions to install the Recovery Manager, I got a error message that syas "NTLDR is Missing" upon reboot. It wants you to hit Ctrl-Atl-Del, and when you did, it just loops back to the same error message. Basically, the Acronis software has managed to ruin the Master Boot Record of my hard drive and rendered my PC unbootable. I Googled this and it seems to be a common issue. And the fix is not for the light hearted. The funny thing is, the instructions given by Acronis's own technician on their own web site were actually not that useful. After literally a few hours of trial and errors (and working into 3am in the morning trying to recover my hard drive), I finally bumped into this link: [...] As you can see, the steps are not for your normal non-technical person

I'm a techy geek (systems analyst) and I was looking for something to replace Vista's standard backup, which seems to work when run manually but fails when scheduled (always seems to have problems finding the previous backup image). I purchased Acronis based on a recommendation from a co worker. When I first installed it I was backing up to a second internal drive and all worked well....I even had to restore some files from the backups and it was very easy. But then I started to notice the problems.... First off, it seems Acornis places some lock on the system volumne which causes windows update to fail when attempting to install updates. If I disable Acronis then windows update works. Okay...not the end of the world. I purchased an external esata drive for my backups as I wanted to store off-site. Well, seem a key component to Acronis, snapman.sys, causes the deadly BSOD (Blue Screens of Death) aka your computer crashes whenever I have my external esata drive turned on (which I

So far, I have been unable to use Restore successfully. This product has zero support from the manufacturer. I'm quoting from the Acronis web site: "Personal editions of Acronis products have a limited number of features and are usually distributed as part of a promo campaign. Support for personal editions of Acronis products is provided only through Acronis Knowledge Base and Acronis Support Forum". Which means that it's impossible to obtain any kind of support from the company via a human being. I certainly paid for this product, so it was not "part of a promo campaign". In my view, this is completely unacceptable. Both the Knowledge Base and the Support Forum were useless to solve my problem. I will never again buy anything else from Acronis.

On my XP Pro system with NAS I have been through hours and hours of configuration and testing and cannot get this software to work properly. Most recently, the scheduler told me a weeks worth of dailys were successful only to find none of them were successful. As a 30 yr s/w developer I'm all too familiar with user error being the root of most problems, however, that is not true here. I really hoped that was it. Read the posts about failures and bad images. Unless you have worked extensively at proving in this solution for long term and hands off backups, I caution you away from it. It is that bad. If you have bought a NAS and are looking for some simple way to back up pictures and documents, etc. I don't know what to tell you. Ive looked at them all. THey are all probematic. However, Acronis was one of the worst of the batch in terms of real-world useage. To be honest the only thing that just seems to work is the free and silly file synch program that came with my NAS (QuickProtect).

I have spent a lot of time trying to make this software work properly on my Vista system. I have finally uninstalled Acronis because I kept running into a variety of error messages including 'bad sectors' and 'unable to write to volume'. The error regarding the 'bad sectors' is documented all over the internet but not resolvable via the Acronis support site. I have run multiple tests on my drives and they came out perfectly healthy. This product has severe quality issues and confusing settings, e.g. three different places to specify the deletion of existing backups. Don't let the polished looking UI fool you, this products is anything but polished. Backup should be straightforward and reliable. Acronis True Image Home 2009 is not. I should note that this is the third version of Acronis I have used, older versions worked much better, at least on Windows XP.

I got a new larger boot drive and needed to copy the original boot drive partition to the new disk and expand the partition to the full size of the new disk. The procedure was simple: 1. Physically installed the new drive 2. Installed the new software and ran it. 3. It prepared to copy the boot drive and then rebooted the system. 4. It performed the actual copy of the boot drive right before Windows comes up fully. This takes a long time. YMMV based on how much data you have. 5. When it was done, I powered off the computer, pulled out the original drive, and put the new drive in its place. 6. The new drive booted perfectly as if nothing was done. Yes, some HD manufacturers have software similar to this, but I found all of them severely lacking in the ability to simultaneously expand a NTFS partition and copy the boot drive. The Acronis software worked very well.

ATI has always worked perfectly for me...I've used it (and previous versions) for more than five years, restoring HD partitions several times with complete success. You DO have to understand what a partition is and a little something about incremental backups, but it is really quite simple to use. In my opinion, though, you are wasting your time if you are making backups to removable media (like tapes or CDs). Make your backups to a USB drive, a network drive, or to an internal drive on a separate IDE/SATA port. This is the only backup solution I've found that works in the background without a significant drain on system resources. (Of course, it's always best to make your backup without any other processes running, but this isn't always practical.) I also use this on several multiple-OS boot systems and it backs up the non-Windows partitions just fine. Easy to restore just a single partition or single folders/files. Recommended.

The true test of this sort of software is: does it actually restore a computer to its working state. Recently I had to use it for just that purpose and my backup worked perfectly rendering my computer absolutely as it was before it crashed.

Buy this product and use it with confidence.

Works as advertised. I used both the Acronis and Norton trial versions, and the Acronis was more intuitive than Norton. I purchased the Acronis, and have since used it 3 times! First time because Dell support messed up my machine, 2nd time because my machine was going slow so I wanted to revert back to a "faster" time, and third when I had to recover files within a folder. All three times is worked great! I backup to an FTP Server on my NAS, but the first few I backed up to a USB harddrive. All worked fine. The reason I am writing this now is because it just helped me out of a jam (the third restore) and thought I would let others know how great this was!

After reading many reviews I decided to take a chance and pick up copy of Acronis. Having had a hard drive failure years ago, I realized that a real test required that I actually buy a new hard drive and determine whether the product lives up to its claims. I wanted to have a backup anyway since many of my applications are upgrades to previous products (eg. VB-4, to VB-5, to VB6 and so on) and upgrading to a new computer took a full 2 weeks to set up. I have a factory installed Western Ditgital Diamond Caviar 500 gb HD on a Dell Inspiration 530 Vista 64 bit OS. I am evaluating Acronis True Image Home 2009.
It took 6 backups and many many hours before I finally wound up with a set of backup dvd disks. If you have a boxed copy of Acronis, you can use their installation CD as the boot disk. I created an additional bootable installation disk.
I suggest that anyone wanting to tackle this chore not make my first mistake: backing up to 'write once' disks. My first attempt was a sector by sector

Besides disk 'cloning' - which is the reason I purchased it - True Image offers numerous backup and protection options and adds a number of utilities meant to preserve one's privacy by allowing to truly erase files and truly remove all traces of online activity.

True Image allowed me to upgrade my laptop's drive from a puny 60GB 2.5" SATA to a 500GB 2.5" SATA and do it without having to reinstall the OS, apply the service packs and then reinstall and configure 100 different little apps. True Image allowed me to do all of the above in about one hour, saving me countless hours of painful patching, reinstalling and reconfiguring.

DISK CLONING:

The Utilities section has a 'clone' option that would copy EVERYTHING, including the Master Boot Record/Sector (MBR) from the puny 60GB drive unto the 500GB while allowing me to control the size of the active partition - this while the 500GB was connected through a USB wire and the laptop booted off the program's CD.

I decided to try this because Ghost wasn't working for me for certain drives and it didn't have enough options. For some strange reason, Ghost 14 doesn't actually do a complete drive image!!

Anyway, I first tried the trial version to clone a PC and restore after creating a boot CD. The interface was easy to use and I had no issues with the clone, it works very well.

Then I bought it, installed the updated version and did a couple of other partition and drive clones with encryption and they worked well also.

I love the ability to mount an image as another drive, very useful!!
I was able to granular restore files with ease after doing this.

So overall, I'd definitely recommend this program and it has worked very well for me! After this good experience I am going to try some of the server versions.

I've been using True Image since version 8. I have dealt with their support during this "pre True Image 2009" era and received very quick and good responses. With True Image 2009 things have gone very wrong. Backup jobs that took 4 hours now take over 16 hours and it eats up all 4 of my CPU cores. Perfmon used to show data moving at 40 MB/s with 2009 it moves around 1-3 MB/s. Backup jobs crash frequently. I have verified the defectiveness of this product on 4 separate machines. The updated January 2009 version does nothing to fix this. If this was a car you wouldn't be able to drive it off the lot.

On customer support: I have been trying to get a refund since December 11th. I did not receive a response to my email until February 9th - almost 2 months. They have still continued to weasel and word their way out of giving me a refund. My last attempt was on Feb 20 - no reply since then. I wouldn't be surprised if Acronis goes out of business / gets a slapped with a class action lawsuit for

Unfortunately, this is about as good as it gets... and I've been looking for better. Disk imaging software by its very nature must be able to operate both with and independently from the resident operating system - meaning there is plenty of opportunity for conflicts.

I've been using Acronis True Image in various versions for 5 years. While I haven't had disasterous problems with 2009 *yet*, I expect that the same type of issues from the past will still be relevant as operating systems and BIOS evolve. I've looked at a number of other products, and despite all the historical issues with True Image, I haven't found anything definitively superior to it. It has saved me several times from corruption due to bad HD sectors, numerous times from wacky software that I regretted installing and Windows System Restore could not undo, and twice from complete HD failure. That said, over the years True Image has been itself a source of *scary* moments.

Pros: Disk imaging for TOTAL disk restoration

I have been using Acronis now for a few years, and love it. I previously used Norton Ghost. The advantages of Acronis over Ghost were evident: on-the-fly backup, great support for RAID, etc. At this point, I would not trust any other software to backup my PC...

I bought this to clone my wifes PC. This was the first time I'd used this program and it worked perfectly. After I cloned the drive, the new drive crashed a few days later. I used the old drive and recloned the replacement drive when it arrived. No problems.

"Warning...warning...warning" Will Robinson...danger approaches. I myself should have listened to the abundant bad reviews. I don't know if it's my machine and the programs already running or what, but a failure to even install should have been warning enough. When first attempt to install I get screened "Failure to install...install aborted" I did some reconsidering, I so much wanted for this program to work, I gave it a second chance..."he chose unwisely"(is that a word?). On second try it started ok and I looked thru the program and I was happy with the features. Then I did what I always do with new installs...I rebooted. The Force was not with me and the vicious cycle of BIOS, Windows attempt to load and blue screen commenced! That would have gone on for eternity if it weren't... thank the Lord... for Windows Restore! Which brought me back to a pre-Acronis state. I don't know if it's a factor or not that other programs run in the background like some Windows features and things like

I backed up my hard drive with Acronis True Image. Then I started to format my hard drive so that I could test Acronis. I couldn't boot my laptop. Then I used Acronis to restore my laptop. I did not have to reinstall win xp and then restore. The procedure was very simple. The drawback of this program is that it is not intuitive. You really have to read the help files and stuff to find out what to do.

I was pretty happy with True Image 10 until I had a problem.

Although they have a link for e-mail support on their website, and although they sent me a confirmation of my request for assistance, two months later they still have not answered me. I have tried phoning, using numbers I found on their website, but I just get recordings whatever option I choose. I left a message including the words 'please help' but have received no response.

I am looking for another backup utility. I DEFINITELY WOULD NOT RECOMMEND PURCHASE OF THIS SOFTWARE!!! I would give it zero starts if I could.

There is little to like and a lot to dislike about this program. It insists on making you operate its way, and tries to force you to schedule everything, schedule, schedule, schedule. "Do it our way, and do it when we damned well tell you to do it."

For example, when you just want to do a quick backup, it has all sorts of calender nonsense, even though it's just a backup. It won't use your name for the backup, so you end up with backup1, backup2, backup3, etc., with no easy clue as to when it was made and what is in the backup. It does not have conventional menus to get you where you need to go, you have to fumble around and try to find something that looks like it might be what you want. But few of the usual options are available. In other words, the programmers are so convinced that you are stupid and have no idea what you want, that they have made it essentially useless.

There there is the fact that it takes up a whopping 123 mb on your disk, and forces you to load a "service"

I purchased this product based upon positive reviews I had read. It appeared to work fine at first, but once the hard drive I use for backup became full, it failed even though I have it set to delete old backups. It also reports random errors in the log but then reports 'Success' in the end. This product does not appear to be reliable and I have no idea if my drive is actually backed up. Norton Ghost was far easier to use. This product is not recommended.

I installed the trial version of this product after reading numerous positive reviews of it. I'm not sure what went wrong, but after doing my first backup and completing the other steps to create the disaster recovery environment, I got the dreaded BSOD. After trying several times and failing to boot into safe mode (or any other mode), I had to use Norton GoBack to restore my drive. Thank God I had that installed and that it worked. I won't try True Image again. Those who wish to should do so with caution.

Installed easily, and asked permission to set up a partition that a system image is written to. After the install, re-insert the install disk, and choose Update Software from the menu choices. There is already an update out that fixes a couple minor things, like Restore not Restoring; and USBs not USBing.

Anyway, after the update was installed the software did what it needed to do. The Backup Tasks can be simple, but if you want there are numerous options available that are well explained in the help page. You can back up your whole disk every day, or backup as little a single file once a month. The scheduling center gives nice overviews of all the tasks and logs of activities. The filters for source and destination are thorough and intuitive, and the menu structures are easy to follow. I backed up my entire c:\ drive to a network hard disk RAID quickly and without any problems, and test restores worked as easily as the backup. Searching the backup is done quickly - files are

I've been using True Image Home 2009 for about a month. I've had a couple of problems and Acronis Tech Support has been abysmal. I've had trouble backing up to DVD's (the software stops recognizing my DVD player after a couple of DVD's have been written to.) Also, the software writes to one of my USB drives as if it's a DVD - dividing up the backup into about 30, 4 gb files. I've tried contacting tech support but have had no luck so far. I have received messages that they are too busy and can't respond to my inquiries - "sorry for the inconvenience." The software seems to do what it says but I have trouble recommending it because of the poor customer service.

(I've adapted this review from an earlier discussion post because those posts don't affect the product's star ratings.)

I've been looking for a drive imaging program for protection in case my HD fails at some point. I'd tried ShadowProtect, but it wouldn't run, and the publisher's tech service people were unable to find the cause. So now I've done a complete image backup with True Image 2009 to an external hard drive, and I've restored individual files from the backup without any problems. I'll also mention that this program was very easy to use, and the user manual is clear.
