I got my Nüvi about 4 months ago when I was in the states visiting family (I currently live in Europe) and purchased it primarily because my older GPS company (whom I should name, but I can't remember the name...maybe I'll add it in an update) wanted to charge me more than was reasonable for map upgrades. The Garmin Nüvi 275 model came standard with all of the Europe (not just Western) maps and all of North America maps pre-loaded for not much more than I would have paid for just the map data upgrade for the old GPS. Additionally, my old GPS couldn't hold more than Western Europe or only parts of the US on its memory card. I could have possibly bought a bigger memory card to accommodate more map data, but then I would have still needed newer maps. So after 4 months I've given the Nüvi a decent run for its money and for a quick BLUF (bottom line up front), I have to say I'm fairly impressed. I'm a fairly comfortable map guy with a decent sense of direction so even when I use a GPS, I tend to have at least a basic mental layout of where I am and where I want to go. I do know people who 100% blindly follow their GPS and though that might work most of the time, they have (at least in Europe) been led on some less-than-direct re-routings (and the occasional dead-end) because of the GPS having inaccurate road data or less-than-clear directions. So, I temper my expectations on what the GPS will deliver and I'm not usually too disappointed. I've used it a bit in the states, substantially in central Europe and even rang it out on the back roads of Crete in Greece. Pros - Good operating interface and easy-to-use touch screen (not too hard to figure out if you have any GPS experience) - MUCH more complete map set than previously offered (on my old GPS anyway) - Nice travel summary statistics (average speed, average time in motion, average time stopped, etc) - Easy to use mounting bracket - Out of the way power plug (on the back of the unit, not sticking out on the sides, where it's easily snagged) - Small and unobtrusive on the dash - The decently low price Cons - Doesn't always calculate reasonable routes (sometimes because of faulty street data) - Not as much information on the main direction/routing screen as I'm used to (distance to destination, altitude, etc...both of which you CAN see but you have to go to different screens to do so) - Have to go through several menu options to switch from 3-D view to "map/overhead" view. I frequently like to zoom out and see the whole route just to see where we are in relation to everything Again, I'm fairly impressed. Maybe all GPS devices have improved leaps and bounds in the last 3-4 years, and I just wasn't aware of it, but this was a substantial bargain (price-wise) over even an updated version of my old GPS. And it does everything I need it too, in a very useable and manageable package. Four and a half stars (loses half a star for the "cons") rounded to five.
