In short, not a cheaper way to print photos.

Stick with the local studios to get quality prints even if you have to pay a little more.

However, if you are looking for average prints and convenience, then this is not a bad choice, thus the two stars.

ordered an additional cassette (about $25 with shipping), to be able to keep two kinds of paper ready to go.

Automatic two-sided printing is available with an optional accessory. It's built in to the more expensive Artisan 800, as are fax capability and an automatic document feeder.

The built-in WiFI capability is great for a family with several laptops, although, as others have noted, a few features work only with a USB connection. Apple Airport users might want to experiment to see whether a USB connection to the Airport base station would enable "Scan to PC," etc; it really hasn't been a problem here. I just don't see any advantage to using the controls on the peripheral instead of scanning from the computer.

My main disappointment is with the scanner' bit depth, but after some thought I'm not even very bothered by that. All the promotional literature, everything that vendors displayed online, called it a 48-bit scanner. I was surprised, and a little skeptical, in this price range, but I couldn't find anything to the contrary. Even the instructions refer to selecting 48-bit or 24-bit color when scanning.

As it turns out, the scanner is only 48-bit "internally"; what you get is a 24-bit file.

To their credit, Epson acknowledged that this was incorrect and misleading, and the person I contacted in their support department said that she was asking to have it changed. (I just checked, and found that some major vendors are still using the 48-bit specification; if this matters to you, be warned!)

So: if you really are shopping for a 48-bit scanner, this is not it. But after I got over being grumpy about it, I decided that it's really a nice little machine for what it is, and that I always planned to buy a high-end scanner when I could afford it anyway. And given Epson's ready acknowledgement and apology for the error, their dedicated scanners are definitely still in the running.

On the whole, I think the $145 or so I payed for the Artisan 700 at Amazon (with free standard shipping) was a good buy.

The unit has an internal motorized tray so printing to disc is merely a case of pressing the disc button, popping in a blank and hitting print. The disc gets sucked in and off it goes - no more fiddling with trays or lining things up. The print quality on the discs is vastly superior too and it prints in about 20 seconds once it's up to speed, whereas the R300 used to take about three minutes - massive time saving for us. I also noticed that the network print speed is much improved with the print being near instantaneous as though the printer was connected directly to the specific computer that is currently printing. Fantastic.

Set up was easy and the supplied cartridges are still hanging on. A replacement of all colors is around $50 which frankly isn't too far away from the cost of the generic ones we bought for the R300. I haven't had chance to gauge how long they last and that's obviously important but for now I'm 100% happy with this printer and have no hesitation in recommending it if you're producing similar quantities of discs as we do.
