Pros: Durable, EXCELLENT SOUND QUALITY, Great Reception, Lightweight, Like the alarm system
This clock radio is a gem! The reception and sound quality is the best we have ever had on a clock radio. Setting the time zone is the easiest ever! The clock radio sits on our bedside table and wakes us every morning.

Sangean America RCR3 Radio-Controlled Atomic Digital AM/FM Clock Radio (White)
Pros: 4 alarms, Dimmable, Nice appearance
After looking for about 3 months, I finally found an "atomic" clock radio with digital tuning, day-of-week settings and 2 alarms (see below).I'm writing this because I appreciated being able to read the reviews of others when I was shopping for this item.I have only had the item for a few days, but it has met all my specifications so far. It has a nice display and the HWS (Humane Waking System) is great. The alarm (or radio) comes on *very softly* (which is usually enough to wake me), and then gradually increases in volume.I found the manual to be a bit difficult, but the size of the print has apparently been increased, because I found the 12-point type very easy on the eyes.I only expected to find 2 alarms, but was surprised and pleased to see it has 4 alarms, 2 for radio and 2 for buzzer. It took me a while to find out how to disable an alarm--press and hold the appropriate alarm button for a couple seconds. One complaint is that I hear a hum while listening to a local AM (manual calls it MW) radio station. It sounds like interference, but none of the other radios I have had in this location had this problem. I unwound and stretched out the antenna cord, to no avail. I will continue to explore to see where the interference originates.Another complaint is the lack of a battery backup, but after reading an earlier review, I found a solution, which I plan to look into. Go to [@] and look at their 12V Auxiliary Power Supply / Battery Charger. $40.74 as of March, 2011.Overall, I am very pleased with the product.

Sangean America RCR3 Radio-Controlled Atomic Digital AM/FM Clock Radio (White)
The clock looks good and I was eager to replace my old Alarm Clock - due to the frequent power outages we have where I live and the atomic clock should work great. However, I found that after manually setting the "Dayligt Savings" to OFF position the very next morning the Daylight Savings was active (ON) again - I found that this clock will reset itself to Daylight Savings time every night and the time will be 1 hour off from when I went to bed. This must be a software issue by the developers and since we need to turn off the the Daylight Savings function in Arizona the clock was unusable for me. I was also perplexed to find that it had no battery back-up for longer outages - the manual states to remove battery if unit not used for a longer period of time - however there is no battery to remove... I believe there is an internal capacitor to keep the time for shorter power outages - tested this for 1 hour and it works, I don't know for how long it will keep the information (less than 6 hours). Returned unit.

I already have one of these, the RCR1, and decided to also get the newer model, RCR3. The first one is good, the new one is even better. Gone is the old seperate antenna for the atomic signal and sound may be slightly better. The new white face, versus the old silver face, is more attractive and cleaner looking. Highly recommend this radio and would buy again.

Pros: Durable, Good Sound Quality, Great Reception
An update on my review from May. The antenna turned out to be irresistable to cats. It is a thin wire with small weight at the end that can be batted and chewed. The antenna is destroyed, and I don't see an easy way to replace it. Even if I were to replace it, the cats would find it again. So, I'm trying the Tivoli next, because the antenna is incorporated in a heavy duty power cord.

We share with pretty much everyone else the view that the Sangean clock-radio is fine, but the instructions are minimally useful. In the case of those for setting, or resetting, the radio/alarm, they're inaccurate; you have to pick days before getting beyond the wake-up time.

Sangean America RCR3 Radio-Controlled Atomic Digital AM/FM Clock Radio (White)
When our 20-year old Sony Dream Machine lost its "Enter" button to set stations, we bought a $150-iHome clock radio. What a horrid experience! Problems: 1. All the buttons are flush with the chassis. There is no tactile differentiation among the buttons. I ended up dripping candle wax on some of the buttons, painting Liquid Paper on some others so I could grope the buttons behind me and over my head in the middle of the night. Hopeless! 2. There was a 3-second delay between pressing any button and getting a response. 3. Sound was tinny and staticky.. Mind you, my husband and I are huge fans of Donald Norman who writes about User Interfaces in industrial design (and we are both, in part, UI/UX designers who studied under Norman at Apple). Norman's "Psychology of Everyday Things"--like why you can never tell which burner on a stove goes with what knob--is a classic. One key feature of the Sangean for me is pre-sets with individual buttons for each station. Almost all the other radios out there have what I call "bookmark pre-sets." You bookmark a station, then have to scroll thru your list of pre-sets. Not what I want to be doing in the middle of the night. So we have had the Sangean for all of 12 hours and already I'm lovin' it. Great sound in our reception-challenged, tree-studded, down-in-a-little-valley, geodesic dome. Great grope-ability in the middle of the night. ***LOVE the highly differentiated tactile array of the top and front buttons*** Love the analog clock...just because I'm of that generation. Lack of back-up battery is somewhat of an issue, prevents a 5-star rating. I will be especially disappointed if the pre-sets get wiped out. Other than with the occasional earthquakes (Northern CA), our outages are usually less than an hour, so we should be OK.

Sangean America RCR3 Radio-Controlled Atomic Digital AM/FM Clock Radio (White)
In one of the reviews it is mention of a signal strength L:0 (weak) to 9 (strong) Is this just on start up because I can not find this signal on my clock. Also it can take up to more then 24 hours for the clock to set on my clock and I live in California. Also every time the radio is used I lose the atomic clock signal and another 24 hours or more before it get's the signal again.

This clock is not easy to read in the dark. The black-on-white color scheme is nearly impossible for me to make out at night. The result for me is a low wife acceptance factor (WAF) because she likes to know the time when she gets up at night. The clock lets you specify the days of the week on which you want the four alarms to sound, and exactly what you want to hear with 2 of them - which radio station, even. The other two are beeping alarms. The "Humane Wake System" is pretty good. It turns on the analog clock face back light orange and beeps quietly at first, progressively getting louder. It also starts the radio gradually, and you can set the volume of the radio alarm independent of the volume for just listening to the radio. This clock has a dial for adjusting the brightness of the back light in standby mode. I have mine turned almost off so it doesn't disturb my slumber. There is absolutely no way I can read the digital clock without touching my nose to the clock at that brightness. The analog clock is only slightly more readable. The digital clock is replaced by the radio frequency when the radio is on. I have observed the analog clock to be off by a couple of minutes, but it fixed itself within a day.

Sangean America RCR3 Radio-Controlled Atomic Digital AM/FM Clock Radio (White)
Pros: Durable, Good Sound Quality, Great Reception
I bought the clock for my father as a father's day gift. The posted comments and reviews were very helpful in choosing the radio. I had the radio delivered to me first so I could figure out the posted 'cons' associated with the radio. The main problem people listed was that the instructions on how to set the radio alarm(s) was not complete\clear. It is actually quite a complex radio it has 4 alarms that can be set independently - 2 use a buzzer alarm and 2 use the radio alarm. My father was concerned about the reception (AM band) and set up. The reviews all stated the reception was very very good; and the back light intensity could be adjusted. My husband wants me to buy us one - just like it.

Great clock with all the features I wanted, plus 2 extra alarms. I did not have trouble operating or programming the clock as some others did. My favorite things: having 4 alarms (2 radio and 2 buzz), I can set alarms for different days of the week, automatic time set and radio set, the face lights up when the alarm sounds, I can adjust the light on the face to completely off and it dims itself out which is cool to watch, it doesn't take up much space, I can adjust the buzzer alarm volume as well as the radio alarm volume, and the very best features are the Human Waking System and the NAP features. Things it's missing: battery backup, cd player, time projection on the wall, and a weather report. None of those things are important to me. I have a clock radio in the bathroom with battery backup that automatically turns on when I am supposed to get in the shower. Notes for programming: Read the directions and follow the steps. when setting alarms - if the day of the week is present in the window it is programmed for that day, if it disappears from the window it is not programmed for that day. When in doubt press the "set" button. You can always reset it if you don't get it the first time. Be aware that there are buttons on the bottom, side front and top. You are able to fine tune the brightness, tone and volume of alarms (buzzer & radio) by using the adjustments on the bottom and sides. When changing the brightness (knob on the bottom) be aware it dims gradually so you can adjust it to the exact level you want it. If you hold down an alarm button and can't tell if it's on, look in the window for the alarm icon for that alarm. If you hold down the alarm button it will either turn the alarm on or off. I suggest taking the time to read the instructions while programming it and get an idea of where all the buttons are, it only took 15 minutes.

Sangean America RCR3 Radio-Controlled Atomic Digital AM/FM Clock Radio (White)
Pros: Accurate Controls, Clear Signal, Easy To Set Up, Good Sound
I needed a replacement for my 20-year-old bedside Nakamichi clock radio, which had some buttons not working great anymore. The Nakamichi had outstanding sound and reception, but had a very small digital display for the time. Because I listen only to NPR on low-power stations, live in the country, and am very nearsighted, and because good design is important to me, I needed a clock radio with great reception and sound, a time display readable at night without glasses, and pleasing design. Dual alarm was also desirable. I considered Boston Acoustics and Tivoli in addition to this Sangean. (Nakamichi no longer makes a clock radio or I would have considered that brand.) Sangean was the only one with the features I needed, and the price was very reasonable. I've used it now for about two weeks. Sound is great. Reception is great. There are four alarm settings. The time is displayed both digitally and analog. But it is still hard to read at night without glasses because the clock hands are the same width, only different lengths. (I'm looking at a wall clock right now that has a straight minute hand and a spade-shaped hour hand--very easy to distinguish visually). The analog display shows NOT 12, 3, 6, and 9, but 12, 2, 4, 6, 8, and 10. The odd numbers have what looks like "11" in their place. Very odd. And what's up with the silver pillars at the front corners? The digital display is very busy, but includes all the information you need to check the status of the alarm and time settings. Set up is not intuitive. Reading the manual is a must, and I'm keeping the manual in the nightstand drawer. For example: there is a wheel on the bottom of the radio labeled with an icon that implies it is a brightness control for the display. But if you turn it, nothing happens. Well, it turns out that it only functions under certain conditions. And under those conditions you can change the brightness from barely visible to bright enough to read by. I wish this radio had a more consistent design, cleaner and clearer in purpose. But overall it meets my needs. Just doesn't add to the decor. And the price is amazing for the quality and features.

Pros: Accurate Controls, Beautiful display, Clear Signal, Compact, Easy To Set Up, Good Sound
Like that this was an atomic radio alarm clock. However, it was far too bright. The brightness controls changed it from extremely bright to incredibly bright.

Sangean America RCR3 Radio-Controlled Atomic Digital AM/FM Clock Radio (White)
Pros: Accurate Controls, Clear Signal, Compact, Easy To Set Up, Good Sound, Totally cool dudes
This product was exactly what I had been looking for. Great looks, great quality (I thought) at a very reasonable price. Out of the box this worked perfectly for 5 months. Then for no apparent reason the analog clock stopped showing correct time. Tried to manually set the digital, reset everything and still it wouldn't work properly. The cord is intact, nothing looks wrong, but it doesn't work. The sound is wonderful, we get FM and AM loud and clear and music is rich. Until the clock stopped I was really happy with this and am totally surprised that this happened. No other Sangean product I've ever owned quit working after only 5 months. Now it has to go back for repair or replacement and I'm without my clock/radio. This is upsetting because I have come to really rely on the radio and both clocks, LED and analog. The fact that the analog clock can't be independently set may be a detriment. I would recommend this to someone only IF I knew for sure that the same thing wouldn't happen. The clock is really gorgeous and compact and it's a shame it didn't live up to it's potential.
