OK - so maybe it isn't the ideal quintessential version, but it is the best one out there so far. The game originally came out on the S-NES, was ported to the Sony PS with beautiful animated cut-scenes, and now it is a DS Game with the most features to date. The game itself was flawless on the Super Nintendo. The PS version had lag-time due to CD-ROM load. The DS Version boasts a beautiful touchscreen control scheme, includes the cut-scenes, lots of unlockable informational extras, extra quests, a new english translation, and a new ending. I have replayed Chrono Trigger several times on SNES and emulator, and I had a blast replaying it on the DS. The new english translation is not essential, but I highly enjoyed it! The new ending was the most exciting aspect of the game as it expands upon the original story. Did I mention that Chrono Trigger, the story, the characters, the imagination, the style are all beautiful, classic, and iconic. Well they are. This is easily one of the best

Having played some of the previous "throwback" games for the DS and Advance, I was a little skeptical about playing Chrono Trigger through again. Chrono Trigger had a special place in my heart growing up and I didn't want to ruin it! Playing Final Fantasy IV through again for me was kind of like watching a movie from your childhood years later. You remember it being awesome, but then you watch it again and are unimpressed. All of this is to say that part of me wanted to leave Chrono in my memories, but my sister got it for me for my birthday even though I am 28 years old so I couldn't resist! Boy am I glad that I got it. Chrono Trigger is everything that I remembered it to be. The storyline, in my opinion, is still among the best that Squaresoft/SquareEnix has ever put out. The SNES was the pinnacle of the console RPG in my time period and Chrono Trigger is just one more example of why I always say that! I know that some people can find the fights repetitive, but those of us who are

This game is a classic, I remember playing it years ago and im glad they made a remake of this game. This game is fun and keeps getting better as you play along. I would recommend for anyone.

There are many who feel that Chrono Trigger is the greatest game ever made. Certainly it is one of the greatest RPGs ever made, in my own experience equaled only perhaps by Final Fantasy VII (never did care for any other Final Fantasy games). It's a rolicking-good-time for fans of adventure and sci-fi, and as RPGs go a whole lot of fun. More than that, the genius of its design and brilliance of its story is not debatable. It's legendary. Even better, it makes for a game that's fun! When I first started the game I was wondering exactly how the game would make me feel. I like the deep story of RPGs, but hate dungeon crawling, random battles, and that very irritating feeling of having absolutely no idea where to go next to get the story moving again. I need not have feared, though. Chrono trigger has no random battles, it's castles and dungeons are brief not every-lasting, and thankfully, you will always know where to go next. The story starts with you in your village on the day of the millenial

I did not own an SNES or a Playstation growing up, so this was the first opportunity I had to play Chrono Trigger. If you are afraid that this game may only be enjoyable to those who can appreciate its nostalgia, you are wrong. This game is truly a timeless gem that can be enjoyed for the first time, well over a decade after its creation. Now, I must point out that I am not usually an RPG fan. I find many of them to be completely tedious (e.g. ones that require a lot of level grinding) and the worlds to either be too constricting or far too vast to the extent that I wander around on various side-quests and never get much done in the storyline. None of these things are true of Chrono Trigger. Also, it certainly helps that the characters are well developed individuals whom you genuinely care for and that the music is fantastic. I never once found myself gritting my teeth through a tedious level grind. This is not to say that the battles are easy; on the contrary, they require much thought

I love this game, absolutely a classic and with the new dungeons, makes it exciting and more challenging, as well as the monster raising too. The game is still as good as when I played it on the SNES, if not better. Tons of endings, which I still have not completed all of them and is SO much fun.

This is one of the best RPGs ever made, even if it dates from 1995. The gameplay is not dated one bit, but the graphics are. Still, they are quite charming and will bring back memories to anyone who has played games in the 16 bit era.
Chrono Trigger is still one of the best games you can get and, at $29.99, it is a bargain.

chrono trigger if you were not around for the snes era, is a classic rpg game where you play chrono, the hero of the game and travel back in forth between time, meeting new team mates, trying to prevent the world from being detroyed from lavos. the game has plenty of armor, items and weopons along with some great characters and NEW cutscnenes not in the origional game. The game also features multiple endings depending on how you play the game, actions you take and when you choose to fight the main boss. for its time the graphics were great, even in the snes era. it is a direct port with some new cutscenes and an option for a new DS style instead of the classic style i am used to seeing. the game brings back fond memories and is still a great rpg to play. in my opinion it is one of the top 10 games of all time and worth purchasing.
also new to ds cartriges, this game is one of the first to feature anti-copyright protection, meaning it locks up on the screen when you go through the time

I am new to the chrono trigger series and I absolutely LOVE this game. I'm so addicted and there are so many little secrets and twists and side quests that just keep this game intense and interesting. I like the ease in playing the game. I'm positive this is one of the few games i'll actually finish.

I grew up on Chrono Trigger, fell in love with the game, and have always drifted back to it during gaming droughts. Personally, I think the characters and story were one of the most memorable ever written (followed closely by Final Fantasy 6 - you can't find a better evil guy than Kefka). While Chrono Trigger has been hotly debated - yes, it's fairly short, and for RPG buffs, you can crank out every ending in three days - but it was created in an era of cartridge limits; but its best feature was being able to pick it up at any point with well-spaced save points. So I was thrilled when it was announced for the DS.
I'll get this out of the way quickly - I played through the new content, and yeah, it doesn't fit all that well with the game (the item quests felt a bit Warcraft-ish to me), but if you don't like it, stop complaining and skip those sections! Seriously. The new translation may seem sacrilegious - if you don't like it, stop complaining and return the game already. Chances

For years I'd heard how great Chrono Trigger was. It's like River City Ransom and Kid Icarus in the praise veteran gamers heap on it as one of the classics from video games halcyon days. Now it has settled itself firmly into its position as one of the highest rated RPG's on the DS. So is it as good as people claim?
Chrono Trigger has quite a few things going for it including an expansive world that stretches across seven time periods and some exceptionally well produced cut scenes. Honestly, I didn't even know that the DS could handle this kind of cinema and it makes me wonder why more games don't do it. On the downside Chrono is rather derivative. It may have broken some new ground back on the SNES but 14 years later it's looking a bit stale. The story is a rather confusing mess and with the size of the world I often found myself lost, wandering, with no idea where I was supposed to be going next and what I was supposed to be doing.

Join Crono and his friends as they travel through time to save their world from an almost certain destruction. From dinosaurs to robots, it's time to show fate what you think of it.
Crono Trigger has been remade time and time again, from one generation of gamers to the next. Whether you played the game when it first released on the Super Nintendo, or you're just now getting the chance to experience one of the world's most timeless stories, I promise you'll not go wrong with the Nintendo DS port of the game. With added features such as new items, a monster arena, and even a new secret ending, you'll find yourself falling in love with Crono and the gang. With the DS touch screen, game play is smooth and seamless, allowing for more of the screen to focus on the view. Trust me you can't go wrong here.

Chrono Trigger has been, since I first played it, one of my favorite games. I've played through it numerous times and still enjoy finding new things. In this port for the DS, Square Enix went back and really did a good job of putting in additions, not skimping in the least. The two new "side quests" are incredibly in-depth, fun and detailed, much longer than your average side quest. The new ending is fun and interesting, doing a great job of showing more connectivity between this game and its superb, underrated and misunderstood sequel, Chrono Cross. This is the ultimate version of one of the best games in history, certainly a worthwhile purchase.

The Time Traveling RPG epic from the SNES era is back and as good as ever! It's the same Chrono Trigger you remember from the SNES, but with some extra content that was found on the PS1 re-release. There's a new final boss that also gives you a new ending. It also contains a new monster battle game (think Pokemon) that isn't really that fun, but that's not the reason anyone would buy this anyways.

This game was great when it was first released almost 15 years ago. Games have changed since then. Basically, if you loved the game 15 years ago, you'll probably love it again now. If you never played Chrono Trigger before, you will not like it now.
The game is completely linear, just like all games were in the 90's, and that line just isn't a very fun one. For me as a kid, the combat system was fast paced and exciting. Now, I literally found myself tapping the A button as fast as possible to try and get through each fight. Developers have made huge improvements in fighting systems since 1995, and this "remake" is just a reminder of that. Verdict: Skip it. All of these great reviews are just from people who loved the game in 1995 and wouldn't dare to give it a negative review now. The reviews on popular websites (like gamespot.com)are giving Chrono Trigger such high scores because they are afraid of offending fans. I would recommend a brand new game, like "The World Ends With You."

When SNES was going out, my sister and I were renting games from one certain store that still rented them and my step-dad rented Chrono Trigger for us. We had never played an RPG before and scoffed at it, but as we played it (taking turns) we both fell in love with it.
Played it until they sold their SNES games. Then when Playstation released its port of the game, we played that, too and enjoyed the cutscenes. My sister gave me the DS game for Christmas and I absolutely love it as much as I had the first time I played it. The DS enhances this game quite a bit. The map on the bottom of the screen, the uncluttered fight screen while we have menus on bottom.
The cutscenes are there like they were on the PS. The only benefit (other than the duel screens) is the lack of load time. This is a great game for both new fans and old. SNES run down? PS load time is too great? Buy it for the DS.

This game is holy grail of 16-bit RPG gaming. I say that it's a perfect game for any RPG fan, and that is said with pure objectivity. It's a timeless classic, the developers felt that way obviously giving you a verbatim copy update for the DS. I give it my highest recommendation for any RPG fan if not just any gamer!

To many of us that had this for the SNES, it was one of the best RPG's of the time. Duel techs, triple techs, the animation...it was a thing of beauty that Square pulled off without a hitch. Many of us that played this game declared it the "top" RPG of all time. Flash forward to 2008, with the release of this timeless classic on the DS, many fans from the bygone era visibly shuddered in joy. I was one of those adoring fans that was waiting for it's re-release, and thanks to Square-Enix and Nintendo, I am now a very happy RPG camper. Despite the price being a little steep (I paid $40.00 for it at Best Buy), it was well-worth every penny. All the classic gameplay is there. The techs are there, the animation, the combat...rendered just as it was back in the 90's. Some may have wished for an updated version, but I personally am glad that Square left it as it originally was. Pros and cons are listed below:
Pros:
Classic gameplay...classic Chrono Trigger
Techs are still in place, combos make

Very much worth re-buying. The game has two modes; Classic and DS combat system. Both opperate the same way, the DS just allows you to issue combat orders with the DS pen.
The PS1 cut scenes have been added into the game and are seamlessly intergrated in enhancing the game.
If you have never played it before i sugest it for all RPG lovers, this game inspired many other creaters.

I remember playing this game on my SNES and now they have it for DS wow I am so thrilled! This was the best game. I remember staying up all hours and playing it for 8 hours a day for days at a time. I just couldn't put it down. Once I beat it I had to do it again. I highly recommend this game!

A great game for anyone 7+! This classic game, first released on the SNES in 1995 was one of my favorites growing up. According to Wikipedia, The DS version contains all of the bonus material from the PlayStation remake as well as other enhancements, including a more accurate translation from Japanese, a dual-screen mode which clears the top screen of all menus, a self-completing map screen, and a default "run" option. Additional content includes a monster-battling Arena and two new dungeons.

It still blows my mind that this game (which was revolutionary when it first came out) can now be played on a small handheld device. They even managed to include the additional animated movies while eliminating the annoying load times of the Playstation version.
Die hard fans will notice the significant changes in the translation (which seems more direct from Japanese), but this isn't game-breaking stuff. Obviously this is only an issue for those who have grown up with the Super Nintendo version.
This game has aged just as well as I hoped it would. It manages to present a unique story and great characters without dragging at all. The gameplay is easier than I remember, but still offers enough depth, challenges, and replayability (beating the game at various points will result in different endings).
I highly recommend Chrono Trigger. It's undoubtedly one of the greatest games of all time, and now you can take it with you everywhere for only $30-$40. Get it.

This is an absolutely beautiful game, continually ranking among the top RPGs ever created. Part of the reason why Square is continually re-releasing games from this era is because they really don't make 'em like this anymore... they're a product of a bygone era that we can never recapture. The SNES RPG heyday isn't coming back anytime soon. In the movie industry, there are movies that are forgotten within a few years and there are ones that are remembered for decades. Similarly, Chrono Trigger is a video game that has stood the test of time, and I strongly encourage you to find out why.

There's something to be said for nostalgia in games; the games that were awesome then might be a little formulaic and even boring now but still, that game managed to entertain for long, long periods of time back when cartridges had to be blown into to get to run and the war was either Sonic or Mario. Now with so many high-tech graphics, vast amounts of sidequests and things to do as well as multiplayer options, is it worth going through "Chrono Trigger", an old-school RPG with appropriately old-school graphics. Well if you're a DS owner, the question isn't "why would you" to "why haven't you by now?"

I remember when I was first getting into video games and this is one of the first games I picked up. And still 13 years later (the game was released in 1995) it is still amazing. The story line is great, the game play is awesome. Simply putting this game was before its time, I mean 13 different ends for a super nintendo game. If you loved it back than, you'll love it now..

This game is still (with the exception of better translation this time around) the same great game it was years ago and it is still the king of all RPG games. The story is amazing, the characters are amazing and if you have never played this game on the SNES, you owe it to yourself to get this game. If you like RPGs you will not be disappointed. If you have played it, I am sure you are going to buy it again because you know what I am talking about.

Chrono Trigger is one of the most widely known RPGs in history. It ranks high up with Final Fantasy 7 and any Legend of Zelda you can name. This is my first experience with Chrono Trigger, however.
What I liked about it the most, at first, was the fact that it was so easy to pick up. I got a brief run through of the story and the combat system, then I was good to go engross in this story of epic proportions. By the end of the first hour I knew I had to finish the game.
Additionally I will note that the music on this game is amazing. Seemingly unchanged from the original, or so I hear. If you hear people complain about the translation, pay them no mind, especially if you never played the original. The English is perfect and I'd have it no other way. Pick up this game!

It is hard to say anything about this game that has not been said before, or that you may not have heard about this game. It's a classic. Even when I picked it up for the first time a year and a half ago (versus many here who got it on the game's first run) on my Playstation, I knew it right away. I picked it up, hesitantly (it had been sitting on my bookshelf for well over a year) and I could not put it down.
Even without the extra endings, this is one of those games that you could pick up and replay over and over again with only getting rarely bored (the only other game that comes to mind here is Ocarina of Time). It's a wonderful game with a very engrossing storyline. While it is in a "save the world" style, it's quite different from the games of today. Not many feature the time travel style that Chrono Trigger does and does well, if not perfectly. And of course, there are always the hidden endings, as you can fight the final boss far earlier than the true ending of the game, as well

Finding Chrono Trigger for the DS was like finding a free $100 bill on the ground when you're starving for a dollar cheeseburger.
This game is an immense breath of fresh air, and is a time-tested classic RPG that delivers on every element of what a good RPG should be.
The story is intricate, the characters are colorful and inviting, the gameplay is smooth and interesting, the graphics are pleasant and crisp for the DS, and there is never a dull moment. I found myself playing Chrono Trigger with the same ferocity as reading a good book you can't put down.
The menus are customizable and easily navigated, especially with the use of the touch screen (which is optional). The battle system flows in a very traditional style, with the options of using Active Time Battle or Wait styles. The story has a multitude of endings depending on the choices you make in the game and other factors, guaranteeing even more playability past the first run-through.
This is, hands-down, the best RPG for Nintendo

Chrono Trigger first hit store shelves in 1995 as a classic, 2d RPG for the Super Nintendo. Since then, the game has amassed a following of old school gamers and new gamers alike.
The game play hasn't changed much in thirteen years, but there are a few new additions. New dungeons and a battle arena will keep those who are playing for the 100th time busy, while the plot and characters alone should appeal to the younger crowd. The game can be played in either DS Mode, where you use the touch screen for the menu, or Classic Mode, to eliminate the touch ability altogether. The game also sports the Playstation animated sequences and the same wonderful music composed by Yasunori Mitsuda, Nobuo Uematsu & Noriko Matsueda.
Chrono Trigger is most often viewed as the best game of all time, aside from Final Fantasy VII. To those playing for the first time, you will see why. Enjoy!

This game is probably my favorite SNES game, not just SNES RPG, of all time. The music, particularly the battle music, hooked me from the start when I discovered this gem amongst my dad's collection of SNES games in our basement two years ago. Yasunori Mitsuda, a famed video game music composer, is credited with most songs, while Nobuo Uematsu, the mastermind behind the music of the Final Fantasy series up through the tenth installment, created ten of the tunes. One of those, the first boss battle music (first heard against Yakra) is an arrangement of a song composed by Noriko Matsueda...but I digress. The soundtrack ranges from epic to tragic, and its influences range from jazz to ethnic Indian. In any case, the character development is extraordinary, with everyone's backstory revealed to varying degrees, often dependent on your involvement in sidequests. Techs (short for Techniques, as you may have guessed) are based off of either a character's elemental affinity (assuming he or she has

If you consider yourself a gamer, and have not experienced this title, you owe it too yourself to pick it up. It doesn't have to be on the DS, though I believe that version to be the definitive one.
The SNES version is the original masterpiece and I just bet you could find it here on Amazon.
The PSX (Play Station 1) version has all the extras of the DS version but loses stars for strange load times before and after battles and while opening the menus which can detract from the over all immersion of the experience.
Sound:
This is the only video game I have ever ordered the sound track for! Haunting melodies from the forests of Guardia, epic themes while rocketing through time, and a sweeping final theme you may find yourself humming for hours. The battle music is standard Final Fantasy fare, but hey, is that such a bad thing? The sound effects are witty and even though this is still midi sound you can tell a lot of thought went into putting it together.

BEST...GAME...EVER!
I played the Japanese version last night, and all the memories of the original SNES version flooded back in, making me remember how much I loved this game. I'm glad they didn't mess around with the graphics by changing everything to 3D, because I feel they would have destroyed a classic, but I am happy that they added two new dungeons, one of which gives you a new ending to the game itself. (Don't worry, there's already 13 original endings, adding another one won't ruin it. They could have taken out the horrible anime cut sequences, but I do like the fact that you can disable them as an option.)
To the younger generation, I really can't say what they will think of it. When I first played this game, I was part of that generation, but nowadays, it seems like 3D games have taken over, and kids will pass this game up because it's not "cool looking" enough to sit down and enjoy. This game is not for small time gamers! It is very LONG and strategic, 50+ hours of game play to beat it. Best story line for a video game by far, each character has a story and needs help solving some sort of issue. Traveling through time and changing history requires that you go back and forth until things are set the way that they should be, but beware, some of the choices that are made can change the future for the worst! GET THE GAME and love it!

Since this game has yet to arrive on the DS, I will base it off the SNES version which is supposedly almost exactly the same. One of my top games. This game was fun and massive. You have a wide variety of characters to play with, and they each come with their own special moves not only for each other, but with whomever you're battling with as well. The animation is great, especially for when this game was made. The story is long and elaborate with one of the most frustrating bosses you can fight. However the characters are cool, and who you use to fight the boss gives you different endings, so you'll want to finish this more than once. With the DS version, there are supposed to be a few more dungeons to play on to make this game that much longer. I am looking forward to this game, and you should too. One of the best RPG games I've ever played.
