K48 was announced in June as a follow-up to the wonderful K45, which had been a great success due to its small size, low price, unusual quietness and energy efficiency. There are basically three meaningful changes: the addition of a 5 1/2" bay for an internal DVD drive, the addition of a DVI outlet and finally a slightly larger case to accommodate the DVD drive.
I chose the K48 over the K45 because I considered an internal DVD drive a necessity. The DVI output also provides better video quality when coupled with a LCD screen. The size growth is barely perceptible and not an issue for me. The price increase of $30 is on the high side, considering the changes probably cost Shuttle well under $3, but the original K45 is such a great value, overall K48 is still not over-priced.
