We have had a lot of printers and this is the best one we have had the
ink is stable the print is clear the ink will last and we print a lot.
The software is a good match for it also,
The fax system is simple just read the instructions on setup.
The scanner is top quality making copies and scans just like the originals.

A decent printer, except that it drinks ink (I replace the black cartridge at least every other week at $15/ea). Overall, I would have saved money by buying a more expensive printer with better ink usage.

I bought this without checking the reviews, wish I had but I didn't have time. It is a good printer but the ink cartridges HP sells don't get close to the number of pages they advertise. I am dumping this printer and getting a Kodak printer (they realize the cost per printed page is important. Most printers can get you good quality a few even get very good and great. But you really have to think about cost per page. I will not buy another HP printer until they increase the ink in the ink cartridges atleast be honest and stop ripping off loyal customers. I have only bought HP printers in the past but dam since I got this printer I buy a new cartridge every week. Hey people its not the cost of the printer its the cost per printed page. If you only do light printing this does not apply. But for medium and heavy users stay away.....Are u listening HP..........You lost this customer

Beware! This printer uses a LOT of ink. I just bought a new ink cartridge, have only printed about 50 pages of type only black ink pages, and the cartridge is showing a fourth empty. Even though the cartridges are cheap, they should still print more pages than that! I would also like to be able to copy pages from a booklet. However, this copier will only copy flat papers that allow the cover to completely shut. I have not tried the photo printing. I would not recommend solely because of the ink situation.

I've read some positive reviews on this printer and I'm just baffled. Text printing for an inkjet, in my opinion, is just average. It's GREAT if you're comparing to inkjets from 15 years ago, but technology has come a long way since then. Anything more than solid color printing is just plain bad. So bad that I'd rather print in black and white - and I'm not talking about photos - I understand that this is not a photo printer and meant as a small office multifunction device. Printing is extremely slow (I'm used to Canon's mid-end printers, which tend to be faster than the competition) and the auto document feeder is useless - the last inch or two always comes out skewed. Even using the flat scan (directly positioning the paper on glass), the color for even back and white documents are completely off. Grayscale is a little better, but not much - black and white barely even registers anything. Now - on to their drivers and software. If you're on Vista, I believe you're just out of

At first I thought it was a good printer, but only after few months I started to have problems with the printer driver. My computer (using Windows XP) can not go into hiberntaion because of this printer. Tried to update the driver - did not help. Now only after one year of use (light use) my scans and faxes do not come out good. Bottom line - you get what you pay for. Learned a lesson, not to buy cheap printers.

This is my second HP printer. I've only used it one month and it is just as good as my old one, but better! since this model has fax and other goodies (I haven't set up the fax yet, but it doesn't seem too difficult). I recommend HP printers to anyone looking for a good, dependable HOME printer. I would not recommend this printer for commercial use, but for the home it workds like a charm! I give it four stars, because a 5 star rating is for something out of this world, and this is just a printer.

I recently purchased this printer to replace some outdated printing and scanning devices when I couldn't get drivers for my old equipment that were compatible with the Vista 64 bit operating system. I have been very happy with its performance. Although I do not use the fax function and have not used it to print in color or scan photographs yet, I have used other basic copy and print functions and it works very well. When you install the software it may help to get it directly from the HP website rather than using the disk and just install the basic software drivers rather than the full software package with photo extras. I have had no problems with the feeder accepting paper when copying multiple pages through the flat feeder on top- just make sure the papers to be copied are pushed in to the machine until it beeps and the machine can grab them without any hassles. I have had no paper jams and have done several multi-page copies. As far as complaints about paper being spit onto the

This is the first time I have written a review, when I read the person review on how the printer did not work with internet explorer 8, I am here to say it works great the only thing that does not work is the HP smart web printing. I hardley ever used it in internet 7 so i do not miss it.For a all in one printer every feature works great. The application HP solution center has everything you woulld want, you can set up the way you want your printer to work, it has all of the applications in one place. The reason I marked speed a 4 is because when you print from a web site it takes a minuite for the printer to start printing. The one thing I wish is that they would of add another holder for the return of printing a docment. If you want a all in one printer and not have to pay a lot of money this would be the one.

Where to begin? I tested all functions since I don't trust reviews that say, "Oh this is the greatest all-in-one product you can get for this price," and then turn around and tell you that they "haven't tried to scan or fax anything yet, but the printing and copying is great!" Insert rolling eyes icon here, ha ha. I'm no stranger to HP all-in-one products, but this is a dud. I followed the setup instructions to the letter and installed the software. Ok, it prints and copies, big deal! I wanted the machine for scanning and faxing. I tried to do some scanning into a PDF file. I put the originals in the feeder. I got 3 nice scans to the PDF file. The only problem was that there were 12 originals. What happened to the other 9 pages? I tried several more times. During those times, I kept getting errors saying that the machine had become disconnected. The cables were not disconnected anywhere, but for the heck of it I kept unplugging and replugging them each time I got the error. A couple

I like all of its features, and it was inexpensive. I owned a Canon "monster" before, which I sold to buy this printer. It was heavy and took up too much space. The Canon also required separate ink cartridges (magenta, yellow, cyan, blue + two black cartridges -- what's up with that?), making it expensive to maintain. The cartidges were messy to load, and I ran out of ink far too often. And it was no faster than the HP Officejet J4580. I am very pleased with my purchase, and I highly recommend this product for personal and/or small business use.

I just bought my HP Officejet J4580, and have had permanent paper jams almost from the first. Paper is cleared and I can see no little bits of paper to explain this. At work I have had older 700, 800 and 900 series printers that just keep on working. The older models have much superior paper feed systems. New is NOT improved. I am taking this one back.

There are a few good things about this printer/scanner/faxer but the negatives are such that I would not purchase it again. The biggest problem is that the technical support at HP is the worst I have ever dealt with and even calling corporate headquarters did not help. The Pros: The price is great. The scanner works okay. The printer works okay. The copier works okay. It looks nice. It is fairly easy to figure out how to use. The Cons: HP has the worst technical support with which I have ever dealt. An example is a problem I am having with the fax portion of this machine. If I fax a couple of pages I am fine but if I fax more than three pages it takes about three to four minutes a page for each page to go through the fax. A 20-page document took me over an hour and 20 minutes to fax. When I called tech support no one could even tell me how fast the documents were supposed to fax. Tech support told me to break up my document and only fax a few pages at a time, then start over

I have almost 35 years experience in the computer field (software development in systems level programming - Linux and PC/XP/Vista) so I know how to write/install/use software. The software that comes with this printer is about the worst I have ever seen (but so is most HP printer software). Since this printer has limited functionality without installing the software, any review of the system must include a review of the software. 1. The software install process attempts (unless you catch it) to install a Yahoo toolbar into your browser. Not what I wanted. 2. The software install fails under the slightest strain. If you have another HP printer, it is likely the software install will fail. HP recommends that (among other things) you disable ALL your startup programs, uninstall ALL your other HP software, and pray (the last is my own suggestion). 3. If the setup fails, everything is un-installed and you are invited to try again. (One definition if insanity is to keep doing the same thing

This printer is by far the best printer i've ever had. It prints black and colored papers in a jiffy. It's other printers. The scanning and copy option works like a wonder and the fax option is fast and very useful when we send pictures back to the philippines and when we get picture faxes from there the imagery is amazing. and also documents for my projects print our wonderful. So far and there will never be any downsides!!!!!

It is only compatible with Internet Explorer 7, not 8. If you try to install software, you will get a fatal error. I purchased this model from HP on the internet. The salesperson did not inform me about that issue. It took 1 1/2 hrs. for HP remote assistance to help me with that problem to 'downgrade' me to 7. Once I 'supposedly' had Internet Explorer 7, the following day, I went to use the internet with Internet Explorer 7, I had nothing. I could not access the internet. I then contacted Microsoft, and had Internet 7 downloaded. Next, it affected my toggle keys. If I typed an 'm', a '0' appeared on my laptop screen. All these problems started with trying to install the HP software. The manual is very poor in content and does not provide sufficient information. It is cheap looking as well ('newspaper' like material). Because of the poor content in the manual, the operation of the features (scan and fax) is frustrating. The fax feature does not work no matter how much of the 55 min. the

The printer seems to print nicely (I haven't tried high-resolution photo-quality yet), but the software that comes with the HP J4680 Officejet printer is, essentially, unusable. I am not able to scan at all, for about eight different reasons -- all because of the very bad software. It's not just that it's hard to use -- It friggin' doensn't even work! It's got bugs in it that apparently cannot be circumvented. I've just purchased Adobe Photoshop Elements in the hopes that I will be able to scan with it. The black cartridge that comes with the printer (HP 901) is the worst cartridge I've ever used. My best estimate is that I have printed about 40 pages, in efficiency mode, and my HP 901 black cartridge is almost empty. The color cartridge seems to be falling just as fast; it's just that I have not printed as much color as black and white yet. At this rate, for every 150 pages or so that I print out, I will have paid for cartridges what I paid for the three-in-one printer. It

I've had nothing but problems with this printer since I purchased it. I keep getting errors regarding print cartridges regardless of whether they are refills or brand new hp cartridges specified by the manufacturer. Very frustrated!! Cannot recommend this printer.

We wasted a little over 7 hours trying unsuccessfully to install this device. The setup on our fast PC took a little over 20 minutes before indicating it had "Failed". We then needed to Remove the software using the HP setup program, and that took about 11 minutes. HP Tech Support then took us through 3 additional cycles of this before they acknowledged they were out of ideas and that there was probably a "software conflict" somewhere. The tech indicated he might have suggested I reinstall XP if I'd not already said I would not do that. I returned the device, and then reinstalled my old printer. That took about 90 seconds. If anyone is considering this box, I hope they will opt for a Custom Install that only installs the minimum drivers, and not the various applications. (I did try this approach myself, but only the printer portion worked.)

I've been operating the HP OffriceJet J4580 for a few weeks now, and I am very happy with it. The setup was pretty easy (except for installing the ink cartridges) and everything was operational even before fully installing the software.

I had problems with two other HP all in one printers in a row, so I took them back and exchanged them for this model. When I got it home and hooked it up, everything worked except the SCAN button on the printer. I sent a message to HP customer support explaining my problem. I got a reply fairly quick with some suggestions that might cure the problem. They didn't work so I replied to them that the problem was NOT fixed, they responded with a few more ideas and a software program to download. That did NOT fix the problem either. They stated that they were very concerned and they wanted to get the situation resolved and that they were going to send the information to their Advanced Technical Support Department and that they would be getting back to me shortly. well that has been over six weeks and I have NOT had any response from HP. Now the printer is double printing and mashing words together. I will NEVER purchase another HP product.
They have NO customer support.

My title sums it all up.
As far as Pro goes, I have none (but 3) because sure it prints well, copies ok, and faxes well (never tried scanning). But that any multi-function printer is supposed to do. So what's new and impressive about that?
Pros:
1. Unlike other printers (Brother, Cannon, ESPON) this guy will print from Black cartridge even if Color cartridge is all gone!
2. Fast Printing
-- I don't run printing press and hence 27ppm or whatever it gives me is satisfactory
3. Fast Copying
-- Yes. It is fast Copying.
Cons:
1. Slowwww installation
-- installation is slow on HP Printers per my experience. Had an HP OfficeJet 6210 before this one for 3 yars and installation was Slow! Same deal with this guy.
2. Slow wireless setup on remote computers.
-- the computer is not slow and I am sure of it. I brought a Cannon printer before this one and oh my! the laptop picked up the printer as if the printer came with wireless networking capability. LAptop found it in literally 2 seconds

We've had the HP J4580 all-in-one printer for a couple of months and it's great. When you turn it on it makes some REALLY loud hard knocking/clicking sounds but once it's ready to print it does a great job. So far it seems to be a great buy for the money we paid. We don't do a whole lot of printing so we haven't used up the starter ink cartridges so I can't comment on how quickly it goes through ink but the finished print jobs we have done looked great. I would recommend this printer.

I bought this based on reviews. I too thought it was great.....until I started scanning. There is a known HP defect with scanning to PDF - a simple one page document is created as a pdf file that is over 1 mb. The same goes for images. read the HP discussion site before you consider this as a scanner.
It is fine as a printer or fax only.

The hardware works satisfactorily, for the acquisition price. That means it is quite slow and the human factors are mediocre. For example, you have two choices with the paper tray: Either leave it extended out into the aisle so that you bump into it and rip it apart as you walk by, or retract it and let the paper be spit out onto the floor.
From a total cost of ownership point of view, this machine is a hog. It is exceptionally expensive to run because HP has taken the "give-away-the-razor-and-sell-the-blades" business concept to an extreme. They have cleverly loaded as much cost as possible onto the ink cartridges:
-- A single cartridge contains all three process colors (cyan, magenta and yellow). So, if you run out of magenta and have lots of cyan and yellow left over, you get to throw out the unused ink and replace the whole lot, at a huge price.
-- A single black cartridge, so that text has to be printed with grayscale-quality ink bought at a huge price for a small quantity.

The HP OFFICEJET J4580 All in one is an amazing little guy.
For the small price of $89.00 I was ready to dismiss it as junk. I mean, really. A quality printer, copier, scanner and fax machine for less than $100? Forget it.
I was wrong. It is an excellent piece of gear at an amazing price. I began using HP's Officejets several years ago with the HP 2500 series and I also own the HP C7280 - both of which are sturdy, reliable, capable machines. But dollar-for-dollar, this unit does just as good a job and is as fast and as reliable as its more expensive counterparts.
One note - this unit does not have Bluetooth capability nor does it come network-ready (and does not have a USB 2 cable with it). But for a dedicated printer connected to a workstation or laptop, this unit will delight even a discriminating user and surprise the cynic.

We have always used HP printers in our office. The price seemed fair and the ink was inexpensive. Then we used the printer and found that ink became very expensive because we were replacing cartridges every couple of weeks. Bought the printer in December 2008 and replaced 3 black cartridges, one being an XL and 2 color cartridges. This was enough to go through approximately 1,000 sheets of paper. The fax to computer and the scanner function does not work with Vista. This was verified after 1 hour and 43 minutes on the phone with HP tech support. I would not recommend this all in one to anyone who does a lot of printing.

I purchased this printer to use for my new hobby: card making. It was inexpensive & serves my purpose perfectly. The only complaint I have is that if you need technical support try the user guide on internet instead of calling - the call center is not in the USA & it's hard to understand the broken language of the techs.

I was in the market for an AIO but didn't want to pay extortion money to get it, and settled on this one. It's actually pretty good overall for the price, because it offers the essentials. So far, I've only used the printer (haven't yet tried the other functions), but I'm very pleased with that--typical time to print off a web page is 25 secs. or so, and the print quality for the money is more than adequate (excellent black text and colors maybe a fraction of a shade lighter than on my monitor--not too shabby at all). You get two cartridges included in the box to start with, and replacements are relatively cheap; they also last reasonably long compared with other brands. Setup was smooth; just insert the CD and follow along on the sheet and you're up and running fast. It doesn't have a million buttons on the front, just a left-to-right arrow function selector, Start, On/Off and fax keys--the bare minimum (and for most users that's all you need). Overall, worth a look if you want a first

Very great printer. Setup was very fast. Printing is great too. Right down to printing in order. If you want to print 5 pages. The printer will print the pages from 5 to 1 where page 1 will end up on top so printing is in order. Also I can print any photo to full size of the paper. And scaning documents came out very well too. The price was great and I receive the printer the next day. Very happy with this printer.

I purchesed this printer last March. Seven months later the front display has gone out. I still can print from the pc but the copy fax functions no longer work. For an HP product this is a poor quality printer.

I can't think of how I could be more pleased with my HP Deskjet J4580. When I bought mine (10/7/08), Amazon was offering it at an awesome special price (with one of those "click to see price" links) with Super Saver Shipping... Even on the SSS the printer was delivered only 3 days after I ordered it (10/10/08)!
When I clicked to see the price markdown, I was so flabbergasted my first thought was that maybe the low price was because this printer is not "wired" for wireless, and and/or because it didn't come with the USB cable included (a packing lack which quite a few buyers noted not being pleased with). I decided I didn't need a wireless printer anyway, thinking I might have trouble with installation since I know nothing about wireless protocol (I barely know the word protocol).
(I did buy a wireless mouse and love it! Microsoft Wireless Notebook Optical Mouse 3000 - Slate)
It appears my instincts were right, at least for me, because I just read some of the reviews for another

This terrific little fax/printer/scanner, for less than $90(!), is compact and lightweight--about 8" tall, 16 ½" wide, and (without the paper tray) about 11" deep, taking up relatively little desktop space, an all-in-one machine.
So far it does absolutely everything I've wanted it to do. User friendly and largely self-explanatory, it requires no complicated instruction manual or ramp up time for those of us who are not especially computer savvy. Printing is fast and "enthusiastic"--it spits out copies quickly and with such force that they end up on the floor if you don't have the tray extension pulled out.
For ordinary home use, this machine has been perfect. By setting the printer for "draft" mode, I get much longer use from the (very small) print cartridges, and the quality of the copies is adequate for what I need. For photographs, I would, of course, want higher resolution, but that is an option, too.
This is obviously not the equivalent of the big OfficeJet Pro machines that

I'm running Apple Mac OS X 10.5 on a Mac Pro and the HP Photosmart Studio application that comes bundled with this printer looks good, but kills the computer performance. After spending a week emailing HP tech support and getting nowhere, I finally called and the techs verified my suspicion that the application was scanning my iPhoto library (3.2Gb) in the background automatically at when it's launched. I tried three time to let it run (over night), but it ended in an error all three times. If HP can fix this issue, or at least make it optional (there's no way to control this behavior), they may have a winner, but until then I recommend saving yourself some frustration by doing a custom install and DE-selecting HP Photosmart Studio when you first set this device up. Otherwise the printer seems to work as advertised using the separate HP Device Manager application that allows you to use all the functions of the device.

I would not recommend this printer if you have a high printing needing. I've had to change cartridges twice already and I have also had problems with setting up on computer. It is also somewhat slow. It could be thatl's all you can get for $99.00. It would be worth paying a little more to avoid these problems.

I bought this all in one yesterday for a friend and installed and set it up for her. It installed easily and we tested everything and it all worked perfectly. I did not buy it here but found it on sale for 49.99 which I feel is amazing for a printer with the text print quality this has. We did not buy it for photo printing.
From reading reviews on many HP printers here on amazon I learned one great trick. Do not install the complete software program. And for sure do not authorize automatic updating. It always runs in the background and is taking resources from your machine. What I have found and been doing for the last 3 HP printers I have had is going to the website and downloading the drivers, then still doing a custom install to make sure I don't get the auto update which ends the annoying pops and slow loading.
Granted for sure the instructions could be much better for installation, but even just installing the basic drivers you still get the help function. But you do need to follow

This is great a great product, easy to use at an affordable price. I use this for both home and work. I bought it for the document feeder since I occasionally need to scan in a large number of pages for work. The only drawback is when you have a double sided document you need to flip pages manually. The quality is exceptional for printing, both color and black and white, documents and photos. I haven't tried the fax feature yet though.

I'm happy with the features. It does not come with the connecting cord to the computer, so you will need to get that. It also has fairly extensive instruction on installing the fax, but very minimal instruction on everything else.

My Dad bought this printer for his office and I installed it. He is a lawyer and needs to fax, copy, and scan stuff all the time. Works perfectly and he is not a tech savvy guy, but he learned how to use it in under 10 minutes. The printer works great, obviously look for a large printer cartridge if you print a lot.

This little guy does everything it is supposed to with very little fuss. The scanner works fine with multiple pages & the software interface is intuitive. Fax works ok, although I have not yet been able to set it to send the fax to my PC instead of printing it. Definitly worth what I paid for it (less than $100).

I purchased this all-in-one last month and have been very happy with it. I have only purchased HP printers because I find them to be reliable and long lasting. I am computer literate but not a geek. I find the print to be extraordinary, even on the "quick/draft" mode. The scanner works much better than my last scanner and the conversion to editable text is, in my opinion, exceptional. I haven't used the fax because I have disconnected my landline in favor of my cell phone. The help section of the software is clear and concise. The printer is enthusiastic (it really hammers out its assignments) so it is loud and tends to shoot the finished product to the floor if you don't raise the paper catcher. The convenience of having all of these pieces of equipment in one unit with such a small footprint is the organized person's dream.

All printers are the same - the only difference is the Ink cost - I suggest you consider Kodak AiO printers cut the ink cost in half - Black and color ink is about $22 - for HP just the black ink is about $20 ... Kodak - Thank you for the low cost ink alternative and the nice quality.

I am technically reviewing the J4540 here, which is pretty much the same box and is the exact same software.
The software is where this product is all very bad. If you need to scan anything, do not buy this printer. The scanning interface is simply horrible. I spent a full 2.5 hours attempting to get this device and its accompanying software to be useful for scanning simple documents (8-page leases, for example) and it just couldn't be done.
Additionally, HP install EIGHT pieces of software on your computer, and you must remove them one at a time through the control panel because they really, really, want their software to stay on your machine.
It takes less than two minutes for all these programs to load themselves, but it takes you 20 minutes to uninstall them all.
Outsourcing manufacturing to China was maybe a good idea once upon a time, but outsourcing all the software and documentation is really way over the top. This unit may cost around $100, but it will cost you 2 or 3 times

Very good printer for the money! Easy to set up, excellent quality of copies and printed pages. I have not done photos yet, but I am assuming that it will do a good job with those as well. I definitely recommend it for a good, home printer!

i got this printer for my home office, i was amazed not only because of the multi functions, but because of the great color. i have never seen as good color from a printer than i did with this printer. now i am replacing all of the printers in my house with this great printer... hp is definently the way to go, i usually buy their computers desktops and laptops and their printers, there is never anything wrong with hp.... ever.... i would definently rate this best buy product 5 stars for the print quality and the reliability that you get from buying a hp product...... buy this printer if your looking for the best printer for your money.....
