I wanted to find out if the new Creative Labs Vado Pocket Video Camcorder (Silver) was better than the Flip Video Mino Series Camcorder (Black) or the Flip Video Ultra Series Camcorder (Black). I myself am surprised by the answer I came up with. The real answer may be, "none of the above."

While all three are *good* devices for what they do, I am still searching for my perfect digital camcorder to come out at the right price. The short answer is the quality of video and audio on the Flip Mino is noticeably better than the Creative Vado, even when it's at its highest setting. However, for most users, the Creative Vado will probably meet your expectations at a much better price than the Flip Mino. The Mino's recent price drop makes the decision slightly harder, but there's still enough of a price difference to make the Vado attractive.

Pros
+ Video quality is ok on the Vado (similar to the Ultra) and much better

This is a relatively simple to use camcorder. The problems that I have with it are mainly about the operating system.

1) There is no menu to allow you to scan through the videos stored in memory. Instead, you have to press play, and then skip through to the video you want to watch.

2) Accessing the preferences to change the recording quality or to set the date/time is a bit of a pain. It requires simultaneously pressing the play and delete buttons, but only when you are standing by to record rather than watching videos.

3) Transferring files to my computer is quite easy, just like retrieving files from a flash drive, but Quicktime couldn't play the files properly without downloading an additional component. That is a minor issue, and it was handled in a few minutes, but it was a mild nuisance.

4) The microphone is not very good. It doesn't pick up sounds unless they are relatively loud, and the sound quality is relatively poor.

Over-all, though, it is a decent little player

I like this little gadget. It's small, durable, and does the job it's supposed to. I ordered this to be sent to my brother's house and found my nephew using it way more than me!

The video was about on par with my CanonSD500 digital camera. Also, I use iSquint to change the format from avi to mpg. To me, perhaps the advertised price could be a little cheaper, but for the job it's a great addition.

I really like this little video camera, it's pretty cool and takes some rather good quality video. 200 megs of video equals about 00:07:30 or video (7.5 minutes). The device is a 2Gig unit that allways you about 1.8 gigs for video as some of the storage space is sucked up with programs and of course 2 gigs is actually 1.91 gigs of usable space.

Pros:
*Compact: I like how it's so small but does a rather good job.
*Simple: It's so simple to use it's rediculous, just hit the big button and record (would be better if the button was Red instead of white it would be more easily recognized as a record button).
*Video quality: for as small as this item is it's rather good at taking video, clean for the most part (i've noticed that it tends to have a decent amount of grain though is average lighting), smooth when you are moving the camera, no jumping of frames, at least not very noticable.
*Flip out USB connector: I like this but I think it's poorly placed IMO.
*Fast charging: I really liked how

I am a Mac user, and I did my research. I always do. But nowhere, on Creative's site or on Amazon, did it say that all of the files are saved as .AVI.

Yes, you can play the videos in QuickTime, once you have downloaded XivD, but you cannot edit in iMovie. So what you see is what you get...no editing allowed.

I did some reasearch on the web about converting .AVI to iMovie format, but everyone complained that you lost quality, and on this little recorder, you cannot afford to lose any more quality. I got this thinking we can record little snippets, do some very light editing, to trim off the fat in iMovie, and that we could do it easily. No way...not with an .AVI format.

And I got this for my husband for Father's Day too...darn it.

It won't record the 35 minutes it takes to document for myself a daily bike ride. It shuts off sometime and saves no file, during that interval.

If I stop and restart the recording every 8 minutes, it works okay, but that isn't much use if it's clipped outside the vehicle, for instance.

It must be some battery-saving feature or other that enables itself even when recording. Anyway it won't work for you if you're thinking of long recordings. I don't find any documentation at all anywhere.

I don't like to be ungrateful - the size and price and what it does is amazing, just not what it seemed to claim, exactly.

ADDED: It seems to record 35 minutes okay on the desk. Just not on a bicycle (I tried it three times), unless it's in short segments.

I wonder if the battery shakes and loses contact. Something's killing the recording. But that doesn't explain why it would work in short segments.

This is the greatest value Pocket Video Camcorder ever. It is slimmest of all, sleekest, user-friendly, plug and play with windows, mac, windows movie maker, youtube, drag and drop, video quality more than sufficient for youtube postings and the cost is lowest of all. The 2" LCD screen is high resolution, sharp and very lovable. Great buy! Value for your money! Give this new product a fair chance!

Let me preface by saying I'm a bit of a Video Geek. I was the guy in the early nineties who had his own cable access television show in high school. I used to film the football games with an old VHS video camera but hey I got paid and rode in the bus with the cheerleaders so it was a pretty sweet deal.

Over the last 15 years I've had a variety of other video devices from Super and Hi-8 cameras to my digital camera that had a video function and more recently a Flip Video camcorder. I also own a Sony Digital camcorder that runs on Mini DV and memory cards.

As a background the Vado is one of many new entrants into the point and shoot video camera market in the last year that relies on flash memory (internal or memory cards) to record an hour or more of video that can then be uploaded to a computer.

I was excited when I read about the Vado last month (there were no photos at that time) it seemed like it would do everything that I wanted in a portable video camera less than $100

I used this camera for a couple of hours last night and I was not impressed. It feels really cheap in your hand and the lens looks like a cell-phone lens. The buttons felt really cheap and were not at all intuitive to use. I also own a Flip ultra. The Flip feels much more substantial and produces better video, especially in low light.

My overall impression was that it the Vado felt like a cell phone without the phone.
