Hauppauge WinTV-HVR-1950 Hybrid Video Recorder USB HDTV Tuner
Pros: Easy To Install, Has coax and comp video, Has the ir port, Small, Usb connection, Worked on first try
This review is early yet. I received it less than 5 days ago. I immediately connected it to my laptop to record movies using beyondtv. At this time, i don't know how well the graphics will look nor how well the voice syncs or if the IR worked, but so far, i haven't found anything to complain about. My biggest concern is its longevity. My 1600 card failed the first year out and had to be replaced and has gone south again. so I'm hoping, that as a stand-alone box, this one will last longer. If i can add to this later, i will.

Pros: High Quality
First tried to use this tuner with Vista's Windows Media Center. It turned out a total waste of time. WMC recognized the tuner, but found 0 cable channels after it did a scan. Vista also would not let me use WMC with Remote Desktop. This made it useless for my purposes, which was to watch recorded tv remotely from my house.

I had a hard time getting the supplied software to install. I downloaded the lastest version and everytime I tried to install it, it failed because it couldn't find a CD drive. My computer doesn't have a CD drive, so I was getting pretty discouraged. It took me awhile to figure it out, but I finally found that the software install was looking for the CD install disk that came with the tuner. After I hooked up a USB CD drive with the supplied install CD, the newer version installed properly.

After I installed the software, I performed a channel scan and it did not find any cable chennels. So again, I was getting pretty discouraged. I was just about to give up, but I decided to reboot the computer, even though it the software install didn't require one.

That seemed to have done the trick. I did a channel scan again and this time it found 128 digital channels and automatically delisted unwatchable encrypted channels!!

I tuned the tuner to the local CBS channel and it played ok. But watching remotely via Windows Remote Desktop renedered the video very choppy and not very watchable.

So I tried recording a few programs. I used the tuner to record the Army/Navy college football game and the Chargers/Kansas City NFL game.

This created a TS file that contained the recording. I played this file on my media player that is hooked up to my TV. The playback was "beautiful"! It was in full 1080p HD with Dolby Digital 5.1 channel sound!! And best of all I was able to play the file while the tuner was still recording the game!! So I was able to watch the game just as if it were a DVR without waiting for the end of the game.

This is just perfect for my needs. I can now use windows Remote Desktop to schedule recordings and Windows Media Player or a settop box to watch the programs as they are recording. I'm now very happy with this product.

Have an Atom CPU in a nettop box and trying to run Windows Media Center with multiple tuners? This device is for you. It does the video encoding so that your Atom doesn't have to. I paired this with an AverMedia Volar Max (a cheaper second tuner with software encoding) and my system runs beautifully--about 60-70% CPU usage when both tuners are recording. Before the Hauppage I had two Volar cards and was maxing out the CPU and had choppy recording/playback. Now now worries.

Pros: Easy To Install, Highly Compatible, High Quality
I had to upgrade since ATI won't support Windows 7. ATI was not a viable choice for that very reason. I have only used this tuner for a week but it was dead simple to install and the remote works fine with MediaCenter. I would recommend this for HTPC laptops or the PCI version for desktops.

I come from a tech background so i am a little forgiving of software issues and willing to do 'some' experimentation to get the gizmo to work. I installed on a toshiba laptop (A215-S4817) turion 64 processor and ATI Radeon® X1200 128MB graphics. Initial experience was the wintv7 app wouldn't run with any constancy, locked up the computer so thoroughly that only a 10 sec power button press would shut it down. CPU load was about 60% for high def. Then i wiped this computer and reloaded it with no apps other than wintv and the drivers for the device. Worked quite a bit better after this, and i nearly though i was satisfied but i still had the occasional lockup. Also with a weak signal wintv would frequently quit working, a channel change to a stronger station and then back to the original would clear it up. Had some recording i was trying to make just lock up and stop after 30 min of recording with no obvious reason. Final straw was when i plugged the unit into another USB port and my mouse into the one i usually plugged the tuner into. It all went to crap then and it looked like yet another wintv/driver install would be required. Sadly i will never get a chance to try this because at this point i was on edge and the unit didn't survive the confrontation. Side note i have one of the PCI bus tuner cards for a desktop and like it. Suspect the main problem is the USB transfer with high def. I dunno...

I bought a new HVR 1950 to use with Sage and all worked well. After a day or so I noticed that the HVR would get a scrambled signal every once in a while. The only way to fix the signal problem was to stop all Sage services and un-plug the HVR and re-boot it. I did some reading on the net and found others with the same problems, even after returning and receiving new units. Heat was suggested as the cause, and the unit does get rather warm. I have now positioned the HVR so that I only have this problem every couple weeks now. I have the unit suspended in the open air, bottom up. It is inside an entertainment center with all of the other little heat generators. It only seems to have the problem now when someone forgets and closes the cabinet doors, so I am going to say it is a "heat problem". Thought this might help others with 1950's and might warn those that are thinking about one. Other than the heat issue the unit has very good audio and video quality.

The hardware is well made and they give you some nice quality cables. But the software is very poor. I could not get it to install and work on a Windows 7 box. It installed fine on Windows XP. However when transferring from some older video cameras (via composite input) it seems that the video would get out of sync and then the input would look like a split screen with the bottom of the video at the top and the top of the video at the bottom, rendering it useless. I would recommend saving your money and looking else ware for a better product (unless they change the software package).

not much to add other than it works really well for me. initially tried w/ my vista home laptop (using media ctr) & was impressed how ez it was to setup using a coax cable connection - literally plug & play. what really blew me away me was how well it ran on a 6 yr old dell xp pro desktop that i had laying around (1gig ram; std video card). unlike a prev review i found the provided software setup VERY easy & the scheduler a snap to work with. very plzd w/ my purchase; exactly what i was looking for!

Pros: Easy To Install, Highly Compatible, High Quality
Works great on Windows 7 and was a breeze to set up. Seems to like the folders you choose on the initial setup. I changed these but have not been successful "yet" so I had to change them back. Has a neat little antenna for TV reception and the typical T-wire FM antenna, which both do the job well. I like the ability to switch between 16:9 and 4:3 aspect ratio for the type of recorder I may be using. Overall I feel this is a great product that anyone will be pleased to own and actually be able to use.

Hauppauge WinTV-HVR-1950 Hybrid Video Recorder USB HDTV Tuner
Pros: Easy To Install, High Quality, Powerful
Installation of the bundled WinTV didn't work with Vista 64Bit. I then went to the support site and downloaded the Beta version, which installed and worked without a problem. There wasn't any clear reference to this in any of the documentation. This is my first TV tuner that I have used. I did a lot a research on this before and choose the WinTV-HVR-1950 due to mostly favorable consumer reviews. In addition Hauppauge Tech Support staff were knowledable and helpful when I asked some general questions prior to purchase.

Ed Nolan
