I have repeatedly been warned that LaCie drives have chronic problems with overheating, and my own experience supports this. I lost about 300 Gb of photographic and video material when a LaCie drive failed on me.
If you do video or photography, the drive will heat up since it will be accessed constantly by the computer. A drive should have more than just a heat sink -- noisy though it might be, a fan can save your drive. Or the must have a very good heat sink. LaCie doesn't not seem to measure up on this count.
I would be particularly wary of a large drive in a compact enclosure. Where is the heat going?
I have had good experiene with G-Technology drives (G-Raid, G-Drive Q, etc.). They are more expensive.

Compared to Similar Drives:
I've owned the drive for about 8 months, and must say that I've loved it from day one. Similar Raid drives that I've had experience with have either burned out or have noisy fans. I also use the Lacie Rugged portable drive. With my MacBook Pro, I've used both intensely with great results. I've had experience with many other Raid and portable drives.
Cooling and Noise:
Since the hard drives are mounted next to eachother by the skinny side, and not by the fat side like most Raids, they do not generate so much heat for eachother. The drive stays very cool, even after intense hours of running during massive video encoding or batch picture processing. This is also helped since the stress is spread across drives. As mentioned, most Raid's are like a 747 with noise and still stay very hot. This drive is calm, stable, and quite, no matter what you do to it.

I bought the 1TB usb drive from LaCie. It worked for about a month and then would not mount. I sent the drive to LaCie for repair which was easily and quickly accomplished. My drive came back with the data still on it. I'm assuming this means that it was the USB controller on the drive that went bad and not the drive itself. Anyway, I cautiously reintroduced the drive into my arsenal by putting it through a battery of tests. It passed all of my tests (including purposely removing the cable without unmounting). But after another 2 months or so would no longer mount. I contacted LaCie again. They are upgrading me to a triple interface drive at no cost. This IS the type of support I have come to expect from LaCie. I have two other LaCie drives (160GB Little Big Disk and a 200GB d2 Extreme with a triple interface) that have worked flawlessly for years. I gave it 4 out of 5 stars because the drive is not as fast as its counterparts. The other thing is that, unless you read the physical dimensions carefully before ordering, you will be surprised at how much larger it is compared to the standard 5.25" drive enclosures that are out there. A nice feature on the unit is the automatic shutoff when your computer shuts down or when the USB plug is pulled. In a nutshell, if you want terabyte-capacity storage and don't mind the larger form factor, this drive is for you.

Hard drives either work, or they don't. This worked for about a week and a half until it failed and had to go back to the manufacturer. I am guessing that the controller failed and that the disc itself is OK. At least customer service accepted the return for repair readily, although the service telephone number that they provided wasn't working and I had to use another number to get through. I have used a bunch of other USB drives and they have all held up for years. I had read about reliability problems with these and had hoped that I would be luckier. Ah well.
