Samsung Multiformat DVD-R/-RW/-R DL/+R/+R DL/+RW/RAM Recorder/4-Head Hi-Fi VCR Combo
Here's my story:
- I finally realize what all that talk about copyright protection is about. I purchased the Samsung DVD-VR375 1080p Up-Converting VHS Combo DVD Recorder to dub my personal VHS tapes to DVD. When I tried to copy my VHS movies (like Heavy Metal which I purchased from a store about a decade ago) to DVD, it stopped a few seconds in saying that it can't dub because of the copy protection signal endcoded on it.

I am now learning that is because I am trying to copy video that has embedded macrovision protection. Taping over the hole on the cassette doesn't help because that hole is only designed to tell your VCR not to allow you to accidentally record over the cassette. This is one of the reasons the Samsung DVD-VR375 1080p Up-Converting VHS Combo DVD unit is useless because all it allows me to copy is my own home movies. From what I am told one needs to incorporate a Digital Video Stabilizer.

To add annoyance to the above problem I also had to contend with the fact that

Samsung Multiformat DVD-R/-RW/-R DL/+R/+R DL/+RW/RAM Recorder/4-Head Hi-Fi VCR Combo
I've had this Samsung DVD-VR375 for about 3 weeks now. I give up and will be returning it!

To clarify, my reason for buying a VCR/DVD burner was very simple: I wanted to convert my old VHS tapes to DVDs that would be able to be played in OTHER machines, not just this Samsung unit.

Here's the problem with this Samsung unit: Every DVD I have burned so far has sound-sync problems. The sound is off by a few seconds. If you fast-forward or chapter-search, then the sound goes REALLY off and the DVD is unwatchable because of this.

I have tested my newly-burnt DVDs on two players in my home: My iMac computer DVD player, and my Sony DVD player, which is hooked up to my TV. Both players give me the same problem: the sound is out of sync.

I have tried every imaginable iteration of dubbing on this machine to see if I could produce ONE USABLE DVD ... to no avail. I have used DVD-R, DVD+R, and DVD-RW discs. All produce the same sound problems. I have used the "Simple dub" option as well

The system worked perfectly for 30 days (about 40 hours) then it would no longer play VHS videos. The audio came through but no picture. What a disappointment! Thanks goodness Amazon has given me a refund. Be careful if you buy and be sure to give it a lot of operation before the return date expires.

As for Samsung, I will never make the mistake of buying one of your products again.

Over the past two decades, I have purchased and owned five Samsung video products: three televisions and two VCR's. All were outstanding, long-lasting performers. That's why, when reading through the mixed reviews for this product, I put my faith in the most positive ones. Unfortunately, I lived to regret that decision.

It's par for the course that the product manual is inadequate, incomplete and sometimes incomprehensible. That's unfortunate because not all the features of this machine are intuitive. For example, one of the reviewers mentioned that his recorded DVD's auto-finalized. That's because the machine is default set to EZ Record, which finalizes disks automatically. You must turn off this feature if you do not want auto-finalize. Where in the manual is this explained? Nowhere. I had to search through the almost equally baffling FAQ on the Samsung website to unearth this important information.

Once I mastered the idiosyncracies of the machine, the few DVD's I recorded

I have had the recorder about 3 weeks and so far have been very pleased. I have connected it to a Samsung DLP LED widescreen TV with an HDMI cable. Resolution of upconverted DVD movies is terrific. The AnyNet+ feature allows control of both Samsung devices with a single remote. But I was naive to think I would be able to copy movies to DVD from premium satellite channels for later viewing; it will not duplicate 'copy protected' movies; but it is possible to record them using the VHS function of the recorder(obviously resolution suffers). I assume recording standard TV programs to rewritable DVD's for later viewing will not be a problem. Although it does not have a tuner, the TV picture has defintely improved (I am not yet receiving HD broadcasts). I'm not sure of the reason, but it is an undeniable and unexpected bonus. Finally, dubbing old VHS home movies to DVD is extremely easy and the results are good. All in all, I am very happy with this purchase.

Compared to the balky panasonic that died just one month after the warranty expired, this SAMSUNG stands head and shoulders above it and all others I have owned. So far I have transferred 300 hours of video tape to DVD and this Samsung has never refused or garbled my instructions. The buttons on the remote were probably designed for smaller fingers than mine but it is a minor inconvenience compared to what it delivers. Four stars today and five if it lasts 3 years.

The recorder would record no more than about 10 minutes of programming before the picture would freeze, or the sound would cut out, or both. This would then be followed about 30 to 90 seconds later by a cryptic error message (which disappeared after only about 5 seconds) and the disk being ejected. Sometimes the machine would even hang, requiring me to actually unplug it in order to get it to respond again.

I tried both the internal and my own external VCR as dubbing sources. I also tried no less than 15 different disks, from 3 different media manufacturers, in 3 different media formats (DVD-RW, DVD-R, and DVD+R). I also tried different recording speeds and formats. I even tried several different source VHS tapes. Nothing seemed to make any difference. I am sending it back for a refund, and will have to hire a local media transfer company to convert my old VHS tapes to DVD for me instead (at much higher cost).

I bought this primarily to preserve home movies I have of my family, mainly my brother who passed away last year. I spent most of my time this past weekend copying VHS to DVD for myself, mom and my younger brother. I have watched one of the DVD's and the quality is much better than the video it came from. It was also so easy I could not believe it. Just a few steps and I was on my way to copying a large video library. If you have home movies you want to preserve this is perfect and was so easy. Even for someone who usually cannot work the electronics without help. I would recommend this for any parent who does not want to lose those precious memories of their children.

I purchased this item primarily to copy from my DVR to DVD. It works well for that. I also recommended it to my brother for converting old family VHS tapes to DVD and it is working well for that as well. It is much easier than copying the old VHS tapes to the computer and then burning DVDs. The DVDs have also been playable in all of my DVD players which is a plus.

Plays older DVD's perfectly. Only problem I have is playing older VHS tapes ( recorded in the early 80's ) I get alot of stuttering. I understand that this is a common problem with the newer VCR's. So I still need to hook up an older player to copy to DVD,not to happy about that hence the 4 stars.

Originally seen this at WalMart, but they were out of stock on them and I would have had to wait 4 to six weeks for one to come in. Went to Amazon and got the item in less than five days at a better price. I am real happy with the unit and it does make a difference in standard DVD's.

If I didn't own the earlier model Samsung 357 it would be a 3-4* item based on the other combos I have had (LG/SONY/TOSHIBA). However,I fell in love with the 357 & have been unable to find it for its previous price-this was released & the 357 went up in price $50-100. So I bought this one. These combos die too fast to spend more than $150. I use an HDMI cord/to an LG HDTV/run thru a Samsung Dual tuner DTV satellite DVR. Viewing quality is excellent-recording is another story.

CON (Compared to 357)
*The LP recording is equal to EP quality on the 357 - very poor-blurry for any text on the screen-so if you are keeping DVDs for long term quality recordings you are forced to use more discs since you have half the time per disc.
*it loads slower
*it is extremely loud, when loading it wooshes/stops/ whooshes/stops & whooshes again. The whooshing actually woke up my husband the first few nights I used it.
*Everything you do to a disc viewing menus, loading, removing, etc. everything causes

For a "simple" machine, I found it a little complicated. The directions in the manual are not helpful. In fact, the manual lost me within a few pages. At first I thought I made a mistake buying this machine, but I am finally achieving some mastery over how to operate it. I had to call Samsung technical support twice, but the product works as promised and I am now copying my home VHS tapes to DVD. One negative is that the font on the front of the machine is really hard to read (it is small and pales against the shiny blackness of the device). The font on the remote is even smaller.

I bought the unit because of the HDMI connection which can upgrade signals to 1080P. When I connected the player to my Onkyo TX SR705, it will only play audio and not video. I checked the player with direct connection to two TVs and it worked. I checked the receiver with other DVD players using the same HDMI connection and that worked. It will not show video through the receiver. Samsung says it is not their player. Onkyo says it is not their receiver. The customer loses and both giants for the components point fingers at each other and does nothing about it.
If I keep this, then I'll have to connect with component cables which defeats why I bought this unit in the first place.

Samsung Multiformat DVD-R/-RW/-R DL/+R/+R DL/+RW/RAM Recorder/4-Head Hi-Fi VCR Combo
I just got this about a week ago. I have two other DVD recorder/VCR combos. One is an Allegro, which is a good machine, and the other is a Magnavox. This is a much better machine by far. Before I go further, all you folks who have a fascination for the bells and whistles, you may be disappointed. It does have the angle function for those rare videos that include it. It DOES NOT have a tuner, or a zoom function. I have it connected to a 42" Toshiba Regza Full HDTV ( 1080p ) using an HDMI connection. I have watched several "standard" Definition DVDs and all I can say is WOW!!!. I do not have HD service as yet, and have been running from my box thru the Samsung to the TV and upconverting the TV signal. It makes a noticable difference, and will suffice until I get an HD box. This in my opinion, was a good interim choice until the BluRay prices come down. I can't comment on the VCR side as I haven't used it as yet. It has all the typical VCR functions, such as pause, slow, FFW, REW, and frame

i'm happier with this model than the 357 because in that one if you were taping something with the vcr and watching a dvd the timer recorder would show an info bar while you were watching the movie. in this one it doesn't do that. with the 375 you can also use your component connections to get a better picture than my tv shows. I haven't tried dvd recording because i haven't checked the dvd-r(s) i have. i don't want it ruined by the wrong type.
