I researched DVD/VCR Recorders and read all the reviews before I purchased this unit. In setting it up I discovered that you can't use Timer Recording if you have a cable box. I don't remember reading this anywhere. When I called JVC customer support their comment was "It's been that way for so long we thought everyone already knew that". I didn't know that and I wish I did. Now I'm working with my cable company to determine if there is a way around this problem.

I bought this unit about 6 months ago and it has been working really well. It is simple to operate and the recordings are great. I had two other less expensive DVD/VCR units by (one of them was a Magnavox) but they were really poor quality. I'm glad I paid more to get a quality machine. I should add that I don't have a new, digital TV. I have an older analog TV that keeps chugging along so I don't know how this unit would behave with a more modern TV.

Bought this for my Mother who wanted a easy to use system in her home. This is perfect. I installed it in just a few minutes, had a quick question for JVC, which they answered promptly over the phone. No problems so far. Perfect for someone who wants just to watch DVD's and videos. I'm sure the other features work as well.

I had to replace our old Sony VCR which unfortunately started to eat tapes. I read a lot of reviews about VCR/DVD combo's and thought the most positive were on this JVC model. So far the machine is working quite well. I can make copies of our Camcorder tapes to DVD and tape from the TV etc. Al things it suppose to do.
The only issue I have with this product is programming taping a TV show. The menu is kind of backwards. Instead of accessing the programming menu with one button you have to go through several pull-down menues. Not very user-friendly. But besides that I am quite happy with it and would buy it again.

I purchased this VCR/DVR for my mother and wish I had gotten it before I got my Toshiba VCR/DVR last year. The JVC is pretty easy to set up and is much more user friendly for the set up and recording functions. I would recommend this unit to all, plus it is one of the less expensive ones out there!

After one month of use, this unit performs GREAT.
PRO's: More Features, Flexibility, Quality than I expected.
CON's: Minor issue - (Verified with JVC) It is Designed to do only one thing at a time. IE, if recording, you cannot use it also to watch something else.
GENERAL: I wanted a "Do All" combo unit. No other unit I researched comes close to the "PRO's above! I was delighted to find all the usage features I expected... and then some that I had not imagined, like easy navigation to "favorite channels" you designate (because it finds more channels than I expected!). While the documentation doesn't mention the existance of its Signal Strength Meter, Its displayed when using the Channel Editor. This is crucial if you are seeking to improve your incoming TV/HDTV signal. (I'm using an old roof-top TV antenna that I'm tweaking)

This unit does what it claims to. Digital reception is solid. Recording works well, but is a bit tedious in that there are delays associated with many things (perhaps this is common to all such units). Put in a new disk? Wait for it to format. Pop out a DVD+RW? Wait for it to write some things. But again, this may be common to all such units. The quality of the DVD recordings is very good, depending on how you set it. Remote works well and is well laid out. Happy customer so far...

Bought JVC DRMV100B in early Dec, 2008. Have copied all my home movies from VHS to DVD,20 full DVD's. It worked every time without a hitch. You have to finalize the DVD to play on other DVD players. Have recorded TV programs both DVD and VHS, and it has worked everytime. Feel free to call JVC if you don't understand anything, only complaint manual is confusing on some features, but they were glad to help. Digital tuner works well, all in all no real complaints as of yet.

This machine does what it says it does -- and does it well.
People who have had trouble getting the machine to record off TV
without stopping have apparently not read the manual carefully.
If you are using DVD-RW disks, you have to record in VR mode.
If you record in the default mode, which is Video mode, then
it will probably stop at a random time and complain about
illegal copying. What a difference a mode makes -- use the VR mode.
I've filled up a DVD-RW recording in VR mode from the TV -- hours go by
-- and no trouble.
Also, you can get it to update the Menu on a DVD+R (presumably others)
by ejecting it; I recall this is sometimes necessary to get it to
be willing to offer you the Finalization choice.
Also, I spent more time trying to find/buy the right media for it than I did
buying the unit -- just go to [...] and get JVC DVD-RW media
at a reasonable price, quick service, no bother, and that will be media
you'll know will work on the machine.
Also, dubbing is as simple as pie.

I record 4-5 hours of programming per day, so I use this unit alot. First off, my original unit did not work. Amazon sent the replacement unit to me within 2 days, and seemed to work fair. The cons:
1) Copyrighted material "signal" comes through and shuts down the recording. Come on, how many Airicept and Seinfield commercials do I have to see that shuts down the recording to think something is strange? Oh well, last month it was the Viagra commercials. We'll see if the JVC Vdw47Eu5 Dvd-Rw 5-Pk (4X) with CPRM solves this problem.
2) Recording quality is okay, but there is a small loss in quality. Sometimes just a tiny bit fuzzy. The average person probably won't see this loss.
3) Naming the chapters is tedious. Not too user friendly.
4) When I try to dupe a VCR to DVD, I get a beat in the audio.
Pros:
Relatively easy to use, set up is not difficult. Recording from VHS to DVD is easy if you read the manual.
If it weren't for the Copyrighted Material "flag" that pops up and stops my

I brought this JVC player recorder in November. 30 days to the day after I got it, it stopped working. When we try to play dvd's or vhs tapes you can hear the sound and see the counter running but there is no picture. I went on to Amazon where I purchased the unit and was told it was 31 days since I had purchased it and therefore I would not be able to send it back. Amazon told me I had to contact the manufacturer and so I did only to find out that there is no lemon clause. Jvc told me that their warranty is only for repair and that I had to mail the unit to them. After many frustrating phone calls I did finally speak to a supervisor who insisted I send the unit to them for repair and he did send me a return label. The dvd/vcr unit was returned to me in less than a week, this time it worked for THREE (3) whole days and once again no picture. Now the 60 day repair warranty that Jvc offers has also expired so I guess I am just out $220.00. Buyers beware this JVC product is an expensive

I recommend buyers look at the Amazon reviews for defunct JVC VHS/DVD
dual deck products before they purchase any current dual deck model.
They have a proven history of extremely poor build quality. JVC keeps
rapidly changing model numbers, which makes this more difficult for
the consumer to discover. However they all look very similar with
only slight cosmetic differences.
Search on these item numbers and see for yourself:
JVC SR-MV40US
* Built Defective, I bought and returned three of these units (12/2007)
* Faulty DVD Drive is a known inevitable problem on every unit (11/2007)

* Disk Error on most discs after 5 months of owning the unit (08/2007)
* No luck with this (06/2007)
* Problem unit (05/2007)
JVC HRXVC27U (5 1-stars out of 8)
* 1yr and 1/2 and it died (02/2005)

I thought this was a very good dvd recorder but today when I went to watch my favorite show that I recorded on dvd the display wouldn't show when I pressed home. It wasn't reading the dvd or vhs tape. I followed the instructions & switched off the machine but it still won't go back on. I had a similar problem with a RCA dvd recorder that would freeze up but when I removed the plug & replugged it it eventually went back on. This one won't reset.

This was our 3rd attempt to find a dvd recorder/VCR that also has a digital tuner. We returned an LG and a Panasonic (which was the worst piece of equipment my husband and I have ever seen). I almost never return anything, but apparently nobody has worked the bugs out of this technology.
The JVC lasted 3 weeks before we took it back, since we got a fairly clear picture and it recorded well onto VHS tapes and DVD. The problem was that it kept locking up and I would have to unplug it so it could reboot. Anytime you tried to change channels too quickly or tried to watch a DVD it didn't like, it would lock up. It wouldn't let me turn it off with the remote or at the unit, so I'd have to unplug it. I'm not sure if it was just that particular unit, or a software problem in all JVC units, but it was frustrating enough that we went back to our old DVD player that doesn't have a digital tuner.

I ordered this product based on the good reviews it received from this site. The first unit made a terrible grinding sound when playing a VHS. It was sent back. The second unit 'ate' the first VHS tape that was put into it. The tape was new and in good condition. The second unit was sent back for a refund. I don't recommend this product at all.

I've had this unit for just over a month. The first problem I had is that it would occasionally catch the DVD when ejecting. I solved this problem by lifting up the back about 1/4 inch. It then decided to stop recording right in the middle of a show saying 'copy protected- cannot proceed'. Its done this twice. Both times during a commercial somewhere during the program. JVC tells me to use DVD-RWs instead of DVD+RWs but I read another reviewer who said they had the same problem when using -RWs.
I can also say that the digital tuner will produce a picture that constantly pulsates between clear and fuzzy. The most annoying problem is that the machine will stop recording audio if there is a glitch in the digital signal. JVC tells me to try the analog tuner. The whole reason I bought this unit was because of the digital tuner. use caution when buying this unit. Yours may work fine. read the discussion threads.

I am a DVD, TV time shift nut. This is the 8th recorder I have purchased in the last year. Most of them are junk. But not this one - it actually works as it says it will. I don't even have to take the cover off to cool it as I do with all of the others. Actually the "Lite-on" is not bad either and the "Insignia" brand is identical to the JVC. This is the only Home DVD recorder I could recommend now. Although I feel we never should have left the old fashioned VCR and tape. DVD's of today are generally quirky - but this JVC is solid. Buy it - you'll like it.

I replaced a DVD player and a VCR with the JVC DRVM100B. I still have an old non-HD CRT TV, and an old Sony AV receiver which will only handle composite video. I have an outdoor antenna on my chimney -- no cable or satellite. (Yes, I know I'm seriously in the dark ages, but we really don't watch much broadcast TV. But the Olympics are on.)
With my old setup, I had to plug the S-Video cable from my DVD player into my TV when I wanted to get best-quality video from a DVD player. Then to watch a videotape or use a game system, I had to unplug the S-Video cable. My kids are not very patient with this and I've had to straighten the S-Video cable pins several times from where they have jammed it in the wrong way.
I was looking for several benefits:
- Acquire Digital TV tuner (ATSC)
- Replace worn-out, failing DVD player
- Acquire ability to record TV to DVD
- Reduce cabling complexity overall
- Leave S-Video cable plugged in all the time
- Provide bridge to a possible future new

So many video recorders today are lacking the built in tuner, but this one has a fine system! I'd rather not pay monthly Tivo costs and this allows us the freedom to leave on vacation and still catch all our shows. Picture quality on vhs and on dvd is sharp! Haven't tried all the features yet, but I'd definitely recommend this brand and model. I've always found the JVC products to be very solid and this is no exception.

I spent days researching brands and prices for DVD/VHS combo recorders. This JVC model wasn't the cheapest, but it had the most positive reviews. Now it has one more. I didn't know how hard it would be to find a quality, affordable model with a built in tuner. Without the tuner, you can't watch a different channel than you are recording. I found that the manual was easy to read and understand. Even if it wasn't, the screens allow easy set-up and navigation. The remote control is easy to navigate also. I don't remember the brand, but my previous combo recorder was a nightmare in so many ways, including performance. Only one word of caution. Don't buy any blank DVDs until you purchase your recorder. They don't all accept all brands of media.

This is an excellent machine and it gives you a crystal clear picture when viewing DVDs and VCR Tapes and has a lot of cool features. However, when you first buy this product the manufacturer only gives you one set of audio/video cables and does not tell you that if you have cable you need a another set of audio/video cables to put in your cable box. The directions don't say anything other than showing you a diagram which is very confusing and doesn't even tell you what station to put it on to view the machine with cable. I had to have a family member play around with the tv to get it to work. So if you purchase this product be prepared to have another set of cables and the directions can be very deceiving.

This JVC vhs dvd recorder is great and very easty to use. I have tried several other brands, in fact one brand I had to send back 3 times for repair because it would not work properly.

The device is good quality and works well however, I bought this item to archive all my VHS movies (that I bought in the good old days when VHS was the way to go) to DVD, it worked for some of them but not all, anything that has copy write protection it would not copy/dub from tape to DVD. I will have to find something else for my remaining 75 plus tapes that I want to put on DVD before the tape wears out and I cannot play them anymore.

After buying 2 similar units (a Sony and a Magnavox) and returning them both, I was skeptical that this would be The One. Well, so far, this unit has performed very well in all areas. We record most of our TV shows to watch later so a tuner was important so that we could watch another program (or go to work) while recording one or more. So far, recording to DVD-R or to VHS has been successful with fairly simple instructions. The various menus are a little different at first but they make sense after a few times. Setup and channel preset were very easy and efficient. The remote is, of course, itsy bitsy, but it could be worse and they do include batteries! I have dubbed a few VHS tapes to DVD-R with success - they look better than the originals in most cases. I am also discovering the joys of recording a TV program to a DVD-RW instead of a VHS tape. DVD viewing is great and it also plays audio CDs quite well although I wish it could read the track information instead of simply saying

We have had this unit about a month, but it is the best we have owned, and we have gone through about 5 combo units.
It would not come on using channels 2,3 or 4, so I called customer service, told a very nice man my problem, and he told me to set input to AV. Have had no problem since.
It records from TV to VHS & DVD using timer recordings, it copies from VHS to DVD & DVD to VHS & the picture qualities on all are perfect.
