I regretted have bought other brand dvd players with many problems. Sony is very picky on dvd format. I tried Panasonic in store and it won't play my discs either. Toshiba can play many format, but it won't memorize the last position when you turn the power off and on. This JVC player can play all the discs I have with excellent picture quality. Compared with other dvd players, there are two areas this player can improve. First, sony can memorize more than one dics and this one cann't. Second this player doesn't come with a universal remote controller. I still give it a 5 star rating because I cannot find any other major brand that can beat this one.

I recently got an HDTV and wanted to get a DVD player with 'upscaling capability.' This, for those who may not know, is a process that automatically converts the pixel output [picture quality] of the DVD you're watching to the pixel count of the TV that it's connected to. This means that playing a 'regular' DVD, utilizing this player and your HDTV, will approximate a HD-DVD or Blu-Ray disc's picture quality [the ubiquitous, but seldom grasped 1080p]. It will not play those formats [HD/Blu-Ray] but the difference in clarity is negligible. You will need to buy an HDMI cable, as only a standard one is included. Slightly unusual in this player is the ability to play, not just CDs and CD-RWs, but DivX files as well. This is a format common to 'ripped' movies found on the internet, so if that's your thing it's a pretty cool feature. It's also quiet, slim, and loads reasonably quick. All in all, if you don't want to drop three to six-hundred on a Blu-Ray but do want an upjump in quality, you can't

This DVD player replaced a Toshiba model that I was not satisfied with, in that, it would freeze perfectly ok discs, and the unit became noisy during operation. I am happy with the JVC model; it has outstanding video reproduction; flawless performance, and it's totally compatible with other connected JVC equipment. One minor fault is; the display is too dim, even in total darkness. Overall an outstanding piece of equipment.

i own this player and compared it with a samsung blu ray player, both connected via a HDMI cable to a samsung HDTV and to be honest with the exception of minute visual details this player and its upscaling ability is worth it. the blu ray costs over 300 dollars and this player made me realize blu ray still has along way to go to be worth the money, but until then buy this play, invest in a HDMI cable and enjoy crisper scenes and details and the new life this player brings to your "old" dvds.
