This DVD player is awful. For these reasons:
Slow reacting remote. - Press it and take a break cause it will be a few minutes, terrible for channel surfing!!!
DVDs get corrupted - Go ahead and get the DVDrw discs and think you've outsmarted your friends paying a premium for DVR. Until you find your favorite show did not record because of an unknown error- the disc got screwed up even though they are rated to be used up to a 1,000 times!!!
Tuner- Unless you use a cable provider that has not gone digital you do not need a TV tuner. This thing will not play all the channels and if Murphy has anything to do with it then it will be your favorite.
Other than that I am having audio issues with it but I have not isolated that to the machine, maybe just a bad cable.
DO NOT BUY THIS HUNK OF JUNK!!!!!!

Mine broke after only a few weeks. Slow and unfriendly user interface and remote control. Cheap stuff from China, what can I say? I wish things were different.

This is a very good product. No DVD Recorder is perfect, but this one records high quality video. It upconverts the picture, which is not as good as true HD, but it's good when viewed on DVD-RAM. The DVD-RAM is able to play in the full widescreen capacity of my HDTV, but DVD-R or DVD+R, etc. can only record in the 4:3 aspect, so I set the picture to letterbox and zoom in to watch it. The DVD+R is a pretty good picture, but a step down from DVD-RAM.
The unreliabilty comment in my title refers to when the machine needs to frequently be reset. It freezes up and might miss a timer recording if it isn't reset.

This recorder has many great features, including good picture quality, the ability to pause a recording (many older DVRs could not do this), and it is easy to use. The menu is fantastic; I have worked with older DVRs that had confusing and difficult menus. However, it also has its flaws. First of all, sometimes after you record a program and press "record" again to record something else it won't record. You have to completely re-start the machine in order to start recording a program. You have two options for powering the machine on as well. There is a "quick start" option and a regular one. The regular re-starting takes 2 full minutes before you can record. The "quick start" doesn't work properly. After trying the quick start I realized I couldn't use it. It would sometimes turn on, sometimes it wouldn't. It would sometimes turn on only to say the disc wasn't properly formatted, when it obviously was (as I've been successfully using the same discs since I bought the machine).

You would think that a new, 2008 model of a digital tuner with advertised "1080p" capability and component outputs would be High Definition. It's not. You have to look very carefully at the box and literature to take notice that the tuner is not HD. I went to two retail stores and both sales clerks told me it was an HD tuner (a natural assumption as it says 1080p right on the box).
The 1080P is a reference to the "upconverting" resolution of regular DVD's. Yeah, that is a nice feature... but then why package it with a built in tuner that is NOT capable of receiving HD signals?
The tuner will process all analog and some digital tv & cable signals (which are poorly processed and look dark and dingy), but will not receive or process digital HD cable & tv.
The DVD/CD/MP3 player and recorder are fine. Images off the DVD's look sharp and wonderful, but the tuner is relatively useless.
