I bought this to replace an old Ilo that had worn out. This is a generation newer and is just a big leap ahead . Some great new features; adjustable skip and replay, easier editing and deleting and easy programming. I have just regular cable. but this unit pick up the HD channels associated with basic extended cablea lets me watch them

Makes a LOT of noise, I imagine it must be defective since the hard drive is soooo noisy. Makes it difficult to listen to what you are watching with noice in background. Plus, it is in my bedroom and it records when I am trying to sleep, I may throw it out!

It does what it's supposed to. Learning how to connect and operate the machine will be the biggest hurdle to clear, but once you figure out how the DVR works it can be a very useful device. Good times.

First of all, I received my unit and plugged it in. It would not power up. After checking the obvious, the power source, power on etc., I determined that I had a defective unit. I notified overstock.com and they emailed me a return label and sent out another unit even before I sent the defective one back. I am very satisfied with their customer service response. I received the second unit in just a few days and it worked fine.
Overall, I m happy with this DVR. The only negative I have found is with fringe digital signals. I live in a rural area and receive my signals from an antenna. I receive 15 digital channels with my plasma TV. There are a couple of weaker channels that come in good on the plasma, but the Philips DVR will not pick them up. I just get a blue screen. I can watch live on the plasma, but can not record with the Philips DVR. Other than that, it is a very good unit.

This is a great product for someone receiving their TV signal from an off-air antenna, or for someone who simply doesn't want to be held hostage to another cable or satellite add-on monthly fee. The upconverted 1080p image is very good both on commercial DVDs, and ,suprisingly, the recorded programs as well. I found that HD shows recorded on the highest quality record setting are actually near HD quality! Also, if you get your signal from an off-air antenna, and have an HDTV with a built-in digital tuner, this is the first independent DVR (not built into a cable or satellite receiver, or TiVo)I have personally encountered that allows you to record one program while watching another. I think it's a great product, and I highly reccommend it.
