With the size, all the different bright colors, and the low cost, I thought this Eee PC might be more gadgit than a usable tool. I was completely wrong.
The Linux software loaded on the Eee PC has a look of a child's game, but it's actually powerful and well put together. It can read and save in MS Word and Excel. I was very surprised. The draw back is the internet Firefox would not open secure WEB sights like my Bank Accounts.
The fix was easy enough. I loaded Windows XP Home Edition and upgraded to Explorer 7. It did take me a few times to do this process correctly so everything worked properly, as the User Guide, like most, is not written clear enough. I was able to complete the change over without any major problems.
Once I did this, and Windows XP completed all it's updates from the internet, all worked like my other laptops. I could connect to all my secure WEB sights, like my banks. I was also able to watch movies on line from my Netflix account, with the Watch Instantly service

Very happy with the computer. I used it on a recent trip to Germany and had great success with it. It connected easily to WIFI hotspots and a lot of interest from folks who walked by as I was using it.
The OS is Linux but very easy to use. The hardest thing to get used to is the keyboard, it's about 2/3 the size of a standard laptop. I ended up reverting to 2 finger typing.

To put it gracefully I love this darn notebook more so then I do my more powerful Toshiba 15.4" notebook. Asus hit the nail on the head with this small notebook it’s a tiny portable powerhouse for that mobile adventurer. Now I know what you are all wondering and that is what is under the hood of this pint sized little device. At its core is a Celeron M 800Mhz Processor and I know that sounds kind of dinky compared to the Intel Centrino Core 2 Duo processors in larger notebooks but the Xandros Linux OS on this system takes full advantage of this processor and boots in record time with almost no lag when opening programs. The great thing about this PC is the SSD which makes the biggest fear of dropping the PC and loosing data down to almost 0. Now I will say that the 2GB and the 4GB models don't have you enough drive space to really do any actual storage on them so I would recommend the purchase of either a large SD/MMC card or a large USB drive for storage. I just purchased one of these units and am extremely satisfied with product. I would encourage ASUS to make the same item in a sligtly larger size. The 7" display and keyboard are a bit small. However, the computer is very, very compact. It even comes with a rather long AC cord that will surely stretch to any distant airport AC outlet.
The computer comes with the version of the linux operating system. It includes 'open office' for documents, spreadsheets, and slide presentation. The computer has three 2.0 USB ports, a built-in webcam, stero speakers, a stero microphone jack, audio jack, and PC video output. I assume the latter for connection to an over head projector. There is also a smartcard port for downloading your photos/videos. The computer also has and RJ45 internet jack and a wireless capability. In no time was I able to configure the system for my network printer at home and print via the wireless link. I was also able to plug in my FAT32 Windows external hard disk

I bought my son a 2G surf so he would be able to enjoy games, internet and computers. After playing with his a few times, loving the Linux OS and not wanting to take my very expencive Macbook Pro on the road during business trips, I decided to get a 4G Eee PC. It's a very awesome little laptop. Nowhere near a Macbook/Macbook Pro but the perfect non-expencive laptop for road/business trips. Fully upgradable, internet access anyway-anytime, fun games, Firefox browser, it has an instant card reader built it which is awesome, webcam and all you need for work on the go. Even though you can load Windows XP on the Eee Pc if you wish, there is no need because the Xsolaris Linux OS that comes pre-loaded on the Eee Pc is a dream come true. Plus for work you have the power and freedom of Open Office. I was looking for ultraportability and high quality. I got it. if you only really use your laptop for checking email, surfing, IM'ing and short documents, then you don't need an expensive machine. Don't let Linux frighten you off. I love it, and will never go back to Windows.

I read all the reviews on this computer and all were very accurate. I loaded XP with some hiccups, but only from my mistake. The directions to load XP are very clear and very well done. The only problem i have had is that MS Office does not like to work from time to time. I recommend purchasing the 2GB memory upgrade, i will be purchasing it soon. Battery life is okay. It last just long enough to get through an hour and a half class with some internet browsing and MS Word use. I would recommend this to anyone who is looking for a good computer for note taking and web surfing.

This little machine is great! This PC is NOT a replacment for a full sized laptop and it wasn't designed to be so. I needed an ultra portable device that I could connect to the internet quickly, create documents and view and copy images from my camera. A PDA is just to small and limited to do this. I have a Palm TX and the screen is way to small for internet usage.
This is a perfect device that fits right in between a PDA and a laptop. Computers are mostly used for internet access, email and creating documents. The Eee PC was designed just for this purpose and it excels at it! I can run home and boot this little guy and be on the internet in 30 seconds. Check my email and be back off in less then 2 minutes. My time is just to valuable to waste for a larger machine to boot.

This is a great little computer, fast, easy to use, and best of all, small enough to use in contexts where one wouldn't want to schlepp something larger. The Linix operating system is almost invisible under a good Windows-like graphical user interface that's easy to use, and the provided software handles most standard tasks well and with Windows/Office compatibility (and in most cases faster). The small keyboard takes getting used to, but does work. There's a good support network out there; I easily found and installed an application that turns off the rather noisy fan.

This computer is fantastic. I was worried about the Linux OS, and I was going to wait until the Windows OS came out. I'm glad I didn't - the Linux isn't a problem at all. The computer has no problem reading my Word files, or converting them back to Word. And the set-up was really easy. I even had the wireless Internet working in about ten minutes. I like this little light computer as much as my old Fujitsu lifebook (also around 2 pounds), but this Asus was about one fifth of the price!

I purchased this computer primarily for use while travelling, either abroad or to conventions and the like. After reading some reviews, I opted for the EeePC 4G Surf (no camera or mic), as I don't do Skype. However, I could add that later, if I change my patterns in use of the computer. I find it easy to use and have beefed up the desktop and other features after reading two (and I'm on my third) books and looking at web pages of users with their recommendations. The keyboard is definitely small, but I find I can type at a reasonable speed with three fingers on each hand. Connecting to the internet, via DSL or wireless, was quite simple, and I intend to use it primarily for e-mail, some word processing, and a few spreadsheets now and again. So, it fits my needs nicely. If it were my only computer, I would be a bit frustrated with the limited view afforded by the screen, but it scrolls nicely and is more than adequate for e-mail and the other uses I've already mentioned. Absolutely love this little laptop. Wish I'd got the 8Gb though. Linux preloaded will hopefully move people toward open-source software once they see it's not so "alien" and "scary." I may be loading a different distro (of linux, of course) in the future, but for now, this is perfect for my needs: communicating while away from home.

love it,it's a wonderful little laptop. just keep your temper on a moderate level, this machine will be your best companion. remember the original VW Bug or today Scion, small, functional, nothing fancy but get you from point a to point b fast, most of your basic stuff done with all basic applications build in. i don't even need to download anything else.

I was skeptical at first that this product would meet the expectations I had from reading a review about it in my local newspaper. However, I couldn't be more satisfied with it's power, versatility, compatibility, and portability. It's a real hot number in a small package.

This little thing is really cute and easy to use. It's got word processing that I use to take notes in class and write papers. I've gotten used to the size of the keyboard so it always feels weird typing on normal keyboards. It's also got pretty much every basic application I need, including solitaire with 15+ different types of solitaire. Whenever I use it around campus, I alway have people coming up to me excited to see a tiny computer.
cons: the battery life only lasts about 2.5 hours, so I carry my charger with me. However the charger is very light and compact.
Also, I'm not really good with linux so I don't know how to fix the settings in order to connect to my university's wifi. But any open, password-free wifi is easily connected to.

Super handy, rugged, portable, and fun. This little computer is an outstanding value. My only complaint is the keyboard. Granted, it is small and my hands are large, and I accept that fact. One must hit the keys really hard in order to type on this. I guess the keyboard sensitivity is so low to minimize striking two letters at the same time.

Asus has done a good job in placing a functional computer inside a form factor so small, one can't really appreciate how small until holding it. The screen is bright, the WiFi Internet works great, the headphone jack sound quality is comparable to any good MP3 player, and the Linux-derived operating system goes to great pains to function like an appliance. There are rough edges peaking through in places, but anyone could pick up this unit and use it for Internet, office, or digital media playback. The only caveat is that the small size compromises the screen resolution and keyboard size, and even users with laptop experience will fumble with the keys a few times. Those wanting the ultimate mobile laptop at low cost will be pleased with this purchase, but users with large hands or difficulty reading small displays will want to wait for the next model with the 8.9" screen scheduled for release in the early summer.

I love this little laptop. Got it two days ago and it does everything it advertises. I have the 8g Asus. The keyboard and touchpad took some getting used to but all in all, I can surf the net, listen to internet radio and type a document all at the same time.
One thing: after my 11 yr old daughter got to witness it in all its glory and since I'm no techno-geek, she showed me features that I might've figured out on my own-just a little longer, but like the product says it's "easy to learn, easy to work, easy to play".
Now if I can just wrestle it away from her...

Bought this for my wife as an easy alternative to a large bulky laptop. First time we used Linux in haste and we had to download and install a new version of skype and manually script the webcam for it.
Slight downside would be some webpages resolution looks funny - Yahoo mail for example but this doesn't bother us.
It's very light, fun and makes a great gift.

What can I say? A lot of punch for very little money. Lightweight, great for traveling. I love the fact that it doesn't have a mechanical hard-drive -- no moving parts to worry about when your shoulder bag is bumping around the airplane. A fast, efficient and flexible cutting-edge operating system that's Linux-based (Yes! So I don't have to worry about viruses!) and comes loaded with powerful perfectly compatible and easy-to-use, no problem software, and is internet ready! Cute and sexy...which makes for a nice girl- or guy-magnet, or at least an ice-breaking conversation-starter. My ranking is actually 4.5 stars, not just the 4 that got posted, but that's because Amazon wouldn't let me choose a half star rating. Why 4.5 stars instead of 5? I love this unit, and will be getting each of my daughters one for their birthdays. I didn't like the easy mode interface, though, so I installed the advanced desktop. With the KDE desktop installed, the Eeepc is an essential piece of gear for me. It goes with me everywhere I go.

I love this little thing! I am a full time student and have quite a distance to travel everyday to get to campus and this small, light laptop is perfect. I also own a Toshiba 14" widescreen tablet PC and it weighs over 7lbs. Taking the tablet PC and my textbooks was always a pain in the back (literally). But now, this laptop is so small and light that it fits in the front pocket of my backpack and even my purse.
I figured out that I type a lot faster than I write and although I love the tablet function of my Toshiba, it was not very practical for in class note taking. I found that I used it primarily at home for research and homework and in class I usually ended up typing my notes. That's where this little beauty comes in - I can use the note program or the Open Office Writer to type my notes in class and with it booting up and shutting down so fast, I can maximize the time I spend taking notes. It took a few hours of practice to be able to type on this as quickly as I normally

This machine is awesome for what it is...a secondary laptop for surfing at night, presenting from, and for children. Especially those of you in school systems, definitely consider this as a 1:1 solution.
Lots of talk about changing to Windows right away. Why? You have to pay extra, and it may or may not work with the first install. Whether you keep the 'tabbed' display that is default or add another Linux distro (tons of which work, from Ubuntu to Fedora), you will get further with using Open Source software. The default OS is based on a version of Xandros (zan-drose), which is easy to use.
Only issue with the eeePC is the inability to add even more RAM (I did purchase the 1GB strip to replace the existing 512MB), but again, if I consider the audience of this machine it's fine.
